Watchlist

The Watchlist – Shaun Maloney

As the stars of the Fantasy football firmament revolve over the course of the season, we frequently find ourselves tightening our belts in one area so that we may lay on the fatted calf in another. The grave is ever beside the throne for premium picks and, as the fortunes of the rival pretenders wax and wane, an underclass of budget kingmakers is ever at hand to furnish us with the means of acquiring the most seasonable allegiances.

Those currently destitute of a certain Dutchman might be particularly anxious to lose a few pounds in their midfield midriff and, whilst Raheem Sterling represents the most fashionable celebrity diet , Wigan’s Shaun Maloney is uniquely placed to offer both an alternative and an adjunct to the lithe Liverpool wing man.

Tucked in just behind Arouna Kone in Wigan’s 3-4-2-1 system, the Scot has produced attacking returns in five of his 10 games so far – registering a goal and four assists for a total of 35 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points. Sterling, by comparison, has registered a goal and two assists for a grand total of 33. With penalties in Maloney’s locker, plus a share of free kicks and corners, it may come as a surprise that he is currently the cheaper of the two: tipping the scales at 5.0 in FPL (although 6.9 and a striker in the Sky Sports game) compared to Sterling’s 5.2 and 4.3 respectively.

Playing for an unglamorous side and sporting an unglamorous haircut seldom yield column inches, and the gulf in ownership is a stark testament to Maloney’s comparative invisibility. Owned by just 1.6% of players compared with Sterling’s 15.6%, the Scot represents an out-and-out differential opportunity, and seems likely to remain usefully ensconced under the mainstream radar.

Last week’s assured win at White Hart Lane demonstrates the Latics’ capacity to go pound for pound with the big boys, and with home ties against West Brom and Reading in the next three, the immediate future looks bright for their attacking assets. In the medium term, the Wigan fixture list is more of a mixed bag, but a Maloney/Sterling rotation equates to (WBA, WIG, RDG, MCI, SOT, QPR, AVL, FUL) up to Gameweek 18 – the cusp of the winter wildcard season.

Offering perhaps the most potent union of open play and set piece threat in the budget bracket, yet boasting low ownership and strong fixture rotational potential – Shaun Maloney could be the key that unlocks many a transfer dilemma over the coming weeks.

Who wants to play a game? It's called The Fantasy World Cup....

(Warning - to play this game you need to be slightly bored...)

OK - first see what nationalities are represented in your squad and note them down. So something like:

    Bosnia Germany
    Argentina France England NIR Latvia
    Spain Spain Spain Spain Uruguay
    Bulgaria Holland Argentina

Now give each player a score based on their nation's FIFA World Ranking - http://www.fifa.com/worldranking/rankingtable/index.html

(Yeah we can argue that England shouldn't be in the top 30 etc, and maybe half your team will never play for their countries etc etc. Suspend your disbelief for the purpose of the game please - like when you're watching Jurassic Park... or E.T.)

Add them all up. Lowest score wins the World Cup!

What everybody get? I got 333.

Second part of the game is; divide your total by 15 (your player average) and you find out what international team you are. So mine is 22 so I'm Denmark.

Not sure how I feel about that. Kaspar Gorkks has let me down badly.

What do you guys make of this argument to captain Baines over RVP?

RVP is great because he’s very reliable but he isn’t always an auto (c) pick imo. Reason I’m choosing Baines is because Sunderland are in an awful state offensively so RVP would have to score one to equal a clean sheet, of course both events are reasonably likely.

However, if Baines gets attacking returns it means RVP will have to score a brace/have a duo involvement in goals/get all 3 baps + a goal or assist to match Baines’ point haul.

Therefore I think the risk factor in choosing Baines isn’t very high as he is a solid attacking threat and the rewards from the ‘risk’ have a good chance of being delivered.

You haven't captained him at all this season.. 😆

"I’m not being defensive just want some input to help me understand why he is unsafe as a captain choice"

No worries. Baines is an ok captain choice but very risky as Everton are struggling to keep clean sheets. If you're captaining him for pure attacking points then surely you may as well go for a Man.U striker against a weak Villa side?

Does it matter? Surely it's an unlikely prospect any bias will greatly influence his captain pick (I'm a United fan btw and would love an RVP hat trick this week as well as any other even with my Baines choice).

Baines only needs to concede one goal to cancel that out.

Think about it - Baines MUST play 90 mins without conceding. RVP can score anytime and you can forget about him then. Also, with a goal comes bonus points generally which would be doubled. CS doesn't necessarily guarantee bonus.

I'm probably one of the few RVP owners seriously considering this for a differential.
Rooney is gonna have one of his good weeks very soon which might limit RVP to maybe 1 assist or something.
Problem is Baines is no certainty for a cleanie, (see v sou wigan qpr wbrom)

Baines can score too lol. He's on pens (RVP clearly isn't because even after Rooney missed one recently he took another one last night). He takes direct free kicks (Rooney mostly hogs those too). Also Baines has a decent chance of assisting, I read somewhere that his average is 15 crosses per game this season.

Its really hard to captain a defender as they are most likely to score own goal than strikers, so in a bad day your captain scores an own goal then no CS, -ve point and any assist he makes or goals he scores will be to cancel out that -ve point and this is most likely to happen to a defender captain than forwards

It's actually quite liberating. Did it a couple of weeks ago when I went to a national park on a cyling/hiking trip. There was no temptation to check my score because I knew I couldn't. I got back on Monday and simply checked my score then.

lost on last post... and relevant.

Afternoon all, a question if I may.

    Would you rather have:

    A) Berba and Valencia (benching Sterling every week)
    B) Suarez and Maloney (rotating with Sterling for home fixtures) + 0.9mil

I know the answer looks obvious, but taking into account Fulham’s poor upcoming fixtures, and their surplus of strikers vying for a spot AND Suarez’s delectable upcoming fixtures I’m really tempted by the latter.

Liverpool/Wigan’s rotating home fixtures til Jan look like this:

WBA, WIG, REA, MCY, SOU, QPR, AVL, FUL, eve/stk, qpr/asv

The final place in my starting XI is between Baird, Lambert and McAnuff.

I’ve gone with Jobi because, while Baird is a strong attacking option, Fulham ship goals away from from home and that could cost me v Arsenal.

Lambert, blaaaaargh, it’s a close one.

    Any other thoughts?

Question, if (and i know he probably will play) Ba doesnt make it.for the hammers. You.reckon pards will go 4 3 3 with Papiss up top?

Would you change anything for GW11?

    Foster
    Rafa – Cuellar – Cameron
Pienaar – Cazorla – Bale – Mata (VC)
    RVP (C) – Ba – Holt

Bench: Jaaskelainen – Nolan – Demel – Bertrand

    No free transfer

    A) start Bertrand over Cuellar?
    B) start Nolan over Holt?

    Thanks

Although it sounds great in theory, I really don't fancy rotating attackers.

It can be hard enough to predict defensive returns, which are easier to predict as it is usually based on the team's performance as a whole and therefore the fixture plays more of a role.

If it's two players at ~£5m then it's not so bad I suppose as it means you can downgrade your 4th mid and use the cash elsewhere. Having a stronger 4th (and perhaps 5th) mid just means you end up benching more valuable players every week when you would probably be better just sticking with one player.

I think in this case of Maloney and Sterling, your other option would be 4.5 mil and 5.5 mil mids. Not many options in those price ranges.

That's true. I would certainly consider it if needs be, but I'm happy with my midfield at the moment. Still wouldn't be surprised if the home/away rotation total was similar to the play one every week tactic!

Is that a fallacy though? Below Ba's price point only Kone and maybe Crouch appeal.

He has to do a lot to break into people's thinking for a spot up front, whereas Maloney is arguably the best choice in his price bracket.

So nearly went with Maloney on my WC but I cheaped out with Guthrie in the end. Worked out well I suppose as all those points would have just been wasted on my bench!
