Monitor – Santi Cazorla

On an almost-weekly basis, Santi Cazorla records stand-out Opta statistics without producing Fantasy returns. The Spaniard’s role in “the hole” for Arsenal affords him plenty time to wreak havoc in the final third but with a single goal in his last four Gameweeks and without an assist in his last six, many Fantasy managers are starting to jump ship.

There is no doubt Cazorla is a wonderful talent but when mid-price alternatives such as Marouane Fellaini and Kevin Nolan have bettered his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) score from similar roles for Everton and West Ham respectively, and James Morrison is just a single point behind the former Malaga man, Cazorla’s price tag weighs heavy on our budgets. In this latest article for Members, we compare his performances over the past four Gameweeks to his opening seven appearances, while also taking a look at Cazorla’s home and way displays over the course of the season so far.

Since returning from international duty in Gameweek 8, there’s been a definite drop in Cazorla’s statistics. Earlier this month, Arsene Wenger admitted fatigue has played a part in the playmaker’s performances – bearing in mind Spain face a long-haul flight home from Panama after this evening’s late kick-off, the Gunners boss has a potential headache prior to Saturday lunchtime’s north London derby:

“Cazorla played 17 games since the start of the season and 17 games of complete intensity and therefore of course he’s a little bit less fresh at the moment.”

Seems to be a lot of interest in Walcott, can somebody enlighten me, he hasnt played 90 minutes yet this season.
I know last time he finally hit form, is that enough to guarantee him game time??

My guess is he should play just off of Giroud, with Santi behind, in the trident up top. Probably rotating with Podolski though.

Sorry to change plan but my dad has moved to the midlands and booked tickets for us to watch West Brom v Chelsea on Saturday when the Norwich game is on! Would probably spend the weekend in the midlands so can’t make this weekend.

Crazy I know but quite exciting too, I’ll get to see Mata, Hazard, Torres, Oscar and co in the flesh.

And Yacob and Mulumbu, superstars of world football 😆

Will be massively cheering on the Brom, was born in Birmingham and they were always my favourite team above Villa and City. Plus they're playing Chelsea, no brainer. It will be a 3pm kickoff so it won't be televised by legit means. If you want an update on your players in that game (Morrison?) I might pop onto FFS and give a half time report 😆

Bloody hell, only Mata for me and not planning on getting any more. Think WBA will give Chelsea a heck of a fight, not too confident on Mata's returns even.

By the way I'm in the East Stand which is the slightly less bonkers one, the Birmingham Road one is full of nutter partisan fans who destroy opposing teams!

Morrsion is jusy such a great mid-priced option. I'd rather not play Foster, but my other option is Migs away at Fulham, who are scoring for fun atm. If in doubt play the guy at home.

I get the impression from the posts on here that Cazorla is a bit of a misunderstood player. I think owners are expecting too much of him and I can't stand the way people say he's rubbish because he doesn't score every game. He is one of the best things to happen to the premier league this year.

Another thing is people being shocked when he's only involved in 'X amount of goals in that high-scoring game/rout' If you watch the games it's obvious what kind of player Cazorla is. He likes to dictate the play than constantly be in the box all the time. In fact his preferred position is drifting along the edge of the box where he can play through balls and take those long shots he's so good at.

Arsenal are pretty free-scoring anyway and it'd be foolish to think Cazorla's going to play a part in every goal they score. Especially when he's not playing in the front 3.

The fact that Arsenal ARE so free-scoring at their best will only help their attackers increase their points tally, Cazorla included.

That said, I think if Walcott is on set pieces it decreases Cazorla's chance of assists a bit. I just wish people would be more realistic about what Cazorla offers and stop despairing at how deep he plays. If you did any sort of research you'd know his style and what kind of goals he scores. His returns this year for me have been extremely good and he's been good Arsenal coverage for a bit. Perhaps Walcott offers that extra gear and might be more potent over time. Especially if he has set pieces now.

One last thing, Cazorla scored one less goal than Bale last year and one more than Walcott did. While you can spend all day arguing they are far more attacking Cazorla is also, lest we forget, absolutely world class. And capable of spectacular things. One only needs to watch how he plays through balls and strikes the ball to know he is quite a few steps above the ordinary.

But it matters too that Cazorla is better than Walcott at football. 😀

My main issue is that people talk as if he's rubbish because of playing deep and not getting further forward to get them points. That's how he is being deployed and at previous clubs he was never constantly getting in the box. If they're getting so angry about his positioning/style of play, why did they buy him then? 😐 He still scores goals and assists goals even regardless of coming deep which is a testament to his versatility. People praise Rooney for it regularly. And he's a striker! Why get annoyed about it when Cazorla's playing in the centre of midfield mostly?

People are only getting annoyed about Cazorla not getting them as many points as they hoped he would. There's no answer to that. Talking about how class he is, is a non sequitir.

For crying out loud, I'm a Gooner and I'm not a millionth as sensitive about Cazorla as you are. I know he's class. I know also that he's not scoring me enough points in FPL. I can separate the two.

Haha, well I do love defending these Spanish midfielders...I've got a soft spot for all of them 😀

Fair enough, maybe I've misinterpreted the posts but I still do think there is a bit of naivety to the views expressed because at times it's not clear whether they've fully grasped what kind of player Cazorla is.

When all is said and done I still may sell him. But he will remain dear to my heart 😳 I just hate seeing the little guy slated 🙁

First of all, calm down. No need to be so insulting. If you wanted to write your thoughts on a player I would gladly read it. When some posts are one liners saying RMT...I don't see why discussing/debating stuff at length when it's to do with football is a bad thing.

What was so wrong with the Dzeko stuff? People are now buying Hernandez for the same reason. It's not completely absurd to have a punt on a player who scores goals!

And trying to bring my history into this is ridiculous. I didn't play the game the first year I registered and last year was my first year properly playing. No point being high and mighty about these things. I've loved football for a long time...so I like to have opinions on it. If we only talked exclusively about the qualities of players in FPL I'd find it a bit boring.

Oh come on. Day 1 you put up 50million Dzeko posts by Day 5 it was still the same. Kept going on about how you were bringing him. Did ya? Did ya f**k. The lack of trnsfer doesn't bother, filling up the forum with drivel does.

I'm all for good topics too but not one person pontificating every 10mins from his perch.

"not clear whether they've full grasped..." Please, how patronising is that!?

The point is why would everybody expect Cazorla to score loads of FPL points when he's never ever been a goal scorer?

The answer is articles like the above. If you know what to expect from Caz then the article makes total sense.

But some people read the 'stats' and think wow, with those stats Caz will have 20 goals and 20 assists. Will he fcuk.

I think this leads to the phrase 'fully grasped'
If you read some posts in here lots of people are expecting Caz to 'explode' - all by himself.
Maybe he will if Podol and Giroud get their act together and start scoring but Caz aint gonna do it by himself.
That was the point of the post - argue with the logic or shut it mate

Actually I agree he is a class player, watched the live games and he is a genius on the ball, from a FPL point of view it is frustrating when he blasts one over or assists the assister.
If the bonus system had stayed the way it was he'd be guaranteed 3 every game, sadly you dont score you dont get BP's now

Mata is more attacking than Cazorla, I'll give you that. And probably will outscore him. Silva I'm not so sure. Cazorla has more goals than Silva. He's already scored half as many as Silva did all of last year. Something to ponder...

How many of you 'big-hitters' are actual football nutters? How many of you eat, breath, sleep, shag, fart, football and have done since before you were walking?

I sometimes sit here and wonder why anyone would listen to me when my rank is so god awfully crap so far this season. This is only my 3rd season playing FPL (i think) and I 'feel' as if I know what I am doing and know football, but I can't explain my poor ranking so far. I suppose I am still learning this here game of Fantasy. it's certainly not regular footy, but it really should be so simple though.

Here's to my impending 120pt weekend....................................:)

I know you are absolutely right. I will make sure I am more aware of price rises and the like next season, and in turn holding/cutting players before such things kick in. I won my league last year and came 2nd the year before, so in the years to come ill make an attack on you boys at the very top. Right now im happy to learn, give my knowledge to others as someone who knows more about football than the fantasy game itself, and try and win my league(s) again.

One simple mistake I made this year. I now have Maloney who I bought for 5.0m, he has played once so far for me, and returned 2 pts. Before Maloney, I had Sterling at 4.6, sold him I think at 4.8, and he hardly even played for me. I had Sterling at 4.6, he's now worth what 5.3? I lost out on .7m on one 4th/5th teenage midfielder.

            Points > Value

Maloney is much better than Sterling, Sterling and Liverpool as a whole are an overrated fantasy prospect, where as Maloney is returning assists/goals regularly.

Yup, this game often bears little correlation to the watching of and playing of football matches.

In this game its who influences the 'scoreline' that gets the points.
If it were who influenced the 'game' the most it would be easy and more predictable.

By that I mean that Scholes, Cazorla, etc with 80+ touches and 90%+ pass accuracy can be clearly the best players on the pitch but RVP or Giroud or whoever with 4 touches and 2 goals will get 10 FPL points more (unless Caz or Scholes manage an assist)

Thats the difference between your knowledge of THE game and your ranking in THIS game.
Ya gotta go against your impulses sometimes and out in players that you know are not as good as the players you admire just because of FPL points.

At least thats my interpretation anyway. Welcome to the world of agony, its great fun 🙂

Im getting there. I have two United players and Suarez in my team. In real life i wouldn't piss on their fires with your genitalia!! I swore that I would never get Suarez in again, and I truthfully despise everything about him in real life/football. However, in this game, I can't sit by and see the likes of Suarez and RVP burn me week in and week out, so now I have to find the strength to actually sit there and '''cheer on''' the likes of Luiz Suarez.

I might have to skip next season to be honest. Disgusting really.

Have 2 FTs and 0.4 in the bank.
    Current team:
    Mignolet Federici
    Baines Ridgewell Demel Clyne Cameron
    Mata Cazorla Pienaar Michu McAnuff
    RvP Tevez Berbatov

Any ideas? Was thinking Ridgewell to Rafael, but need the money, so would have to sell Cazorla.

    Hangeland, what to do lads.

Currently he;s on 95% for a drop, but his transfers out have slowed rapidly.

    Do I

    a) Play him for (SUN) and hope he doesn't drop

    b) Sell him for Shorey and play Clyne or Huth

Is he the best bet of those 3, Fulham have no been as solid at the back this year.

Still counts as a rest when it's Balotelli we're talking about. I guess if there is something serious going on behind closed doors he won't start but I'd say there's a good chance he will. It's just a hunch.

Well lads, haven't had any city coverage for a while but with Champions League situation as it is and united moving up the gears can't see Mancini putting out a weakened side in PL games.

I have 2 FT but thinking of spending 4 points in order to get Aguero. I had Tevez earlier in the season but lets face it Aguero is the main man for City, and worth the extra outlay in my book.

    My proposed transfers are

    Pog ---> Aguero
    Bale ----> Schneiderlin
Hangeland --> Gunter ................leaving me 0.0 in the bank, giving me the team below.

    ..............Foster..............Begovic

    Baines....Cuellar...Saylor...Demel.....GUNTER

    Mata....Felllaini....Sterling..SCHNEIDERLIN..Michu

    ..........rvp....AGUERO...suarez.............

Surprised to see Zaha called up but Austin not get a sniff. Ausin has been the better player this season.

Optimus and Forca are my opponents this weekend. I NEED Hernandez to get a decent score. Those two are going strong at the moment...

Silva. Similar talent, but Silva in a better team, cheaper and more of a differential.
