Watchlist

The Watchlist – Christian Benteke

Clearly, Christian Benteke has more over his main rival for the lone forward role at Aston Villa than three extra letters at the end of his surname. While Darren Bent was expected to lead the line for the midlanders this season, it’s been the 21-year-old summer signing who has been backed by manager Paul Lambert in recent weeks; relegating Bent, who is now injured, to just one start and three substitute appearances since Gameweek 5.

So why is this young Belgian international player so highly regarded by Lambert? His track record at Belgian side Genk, where he left to join Villa on a four-year deal, gives a good indication of his goal scoring ability. During the 2011-12 season, Benteke scored 19 times in 37 appearances. Two years earlier, while on loan at another Belgian club, KV Kortrijk, the then-teenager scored a similarly impressive 15 goals in 34 appearances.

His first appearance for Aston Villa, as a substitute during the west midlands side’s Gameweek 4 away clash with Swansea, also showed his potential, as Benteke lifted the ball over Michael Vorm and scored on the volley; a sublime piece of skill to herald one of the Premier League’s newest talents.

Only one more goal has followed in the Premier League, scored during Villa’s Gameweek 9 home game with Norwich, though he also notched up two Premier League assists – this means that, when on the pitch, Benteke has been involved in 50% of his side’s goals so far. In addition, the Belgian has also recorded two bonus points to take him to 31 points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), where he is Villa’s second top points scorer, just two behind Matt Lowton.

Benteke has also impressed outside of the Premier League this term. Supplying an assist in Villa’s Capital One Cup third round win at City, he then struck twice in the last 16, as Lambert’s side saw off Swindon Town 3-2 last month. He has also scored four times in six appearances for his country over the last four months.

While many may question whether Benteke can cling on to a starting spot when Bent returns from injury (which is expected to be at the end of this month), Lambert’s ringing endorsement of the player’s recent display against United sums up just how highly he rates the Belgian. Having watched Benteke bully Chris Smalling before teeing up Andreas Weimann for the opener, the Villa boss went on to say:

“I think he’s not just a strong player, his technique is terrific and, for someone who is just 21, he can be anything he wants. Christian keeps going. He’s a brilliant guy as well. His character is terrific but my God, he’s a proper No.9. He did give the United centre-halves a run for their money”

Priced at 6.5 in FPL and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game (where he has also scored 31 points), Benteke has a mere 0.4% and 0.2% ownership respectively. With a favourable fixture list over the next four weeks (ARS, REA, qpr, STO), he has the potential to offer real value as a short-term punt and affords Fantasy managers an intriguing differential option amongst our forward three slots before Villa’s fixtures (liv, che, TOT) stiffen from Gameweek 17 onwards.

I am kinda in the same boat, as in 2FTs and not much idea. However, based on fixtures and playing time I would look to change Demel. Also, Hughes is not looking good for fixtures or clean sheets either.

Didn't see Green. I would lose Demel first, then Green. Bego will last two weeks. Hughes fixtures improve if you leave him for a couple of weeks.

For what it's worth, this is what I think happened at Chelsea; Rather than the usual mindless managerial sacking, this was a tactical move motivated by the likelihood of City also dropping out of the CL and the pressure this would heap on Mancini. Given that City represents the other viable role for Guardiola, I think Abramovich moved first to open the door to Guardiola before City could. I don't think RDM's results themselves were the primary catalyst for his sacking.

So while there may be method to Roman's madness, it is is however, and I say this as a Blues fan of 26 years, a total disgrace that RDM was sacked given what he achieved last season not to mention his status as a player. Chelsea have not been stabbed in the back by their players in the way that, say, Arsenal so frequently are but, if we were, I think maybe we'd hold 'loyalty' in higher esteem than we seem to. If only we showed half the class RDM has, even half of the time, I think we'd be far less disliked and at least equally as successful.

But the joke's on us as we have Benitez, a manager we used to sing mocking songs about, in charge now. And frankly I feel more sorry for him than for anyone. Benitez, let alone Guardiola is too good for us right now.

    Okay rant over.

I haven't read it myself yet but I noticed there is an article on the Guardian website about why Guardiola may not be enticed by the Chelsea job. Whether you agree or not you might find it a good read.

But sacking RDM has actually taken some of the preassure off of Mancini. And, you cant deny the fact that RDM never was qualified for the job, he just bought himself a stay of exectution when he somehow managed to luckbox into FA-cup and CL wins. And, youre right. Guardiola would never sign for Chelsea. Im actually impressed that they get anyone to manage that club, given Abramovic`s influence.

Ha. Guardiola will be the next Chelsea manager, it's practically a certainty. Where else would he go? RDM is entirely responsible for winning both the FA cup and the CL and should be rightfully commended for his tactics, resource management and man management in a crisis. He might not have been the guy for the longer term but he deserved the opportunity to grow into that role. Sadly for him, his outsmarting of Guardiola (and yes the was a lot of luck too) was both his greatest success and failure since it lead to his resignation from Barca.

Puncheon is actually someone I'd fancy now that you mention it. He was incredibly threatening last game with lots of shots. He also might be a good swap long term for Britton who you can only expect 2 points from. Puncheon, while his starting place is questionable...he looks to have played his way massively into Adkin's thoughts with that performance. And if he's getting that many shots...he may well pay off the hit.

Jones is an interesting one. Spurs struggling for CS and Caulker won't score every week. Wisdom maybe as well. The thing I like about Jones is he's cheap, plays in a solid defence, but you'd feel comfortable benching him, I'm not sure you would with Caulker or Wisdom due to who they play for.

    Begovic
    Baines, Cuellar, Cameron
    Bale, Mata, Sterling, Pienaar
    Berbatov, RVP (c), Suarez (vc)

    Foster; Santon, Nelson, Fellaini

After Norwich planning Pie and Baines -> Silva and Wisdom (-4). Wise move? 😉

Rather than posting Wilkinson is "shit" as I knew when I bought him (but he was the cheaper STK option) when I asked for an injury update, maybe the more appropriate post could have been : "Not sure, but fit or not he's a poor choice sucker!"

Anyone know how likely Wilkinson is to start at the weekend? I'm going to get rid if he's not likely to play..
