Sky Sports Focus

Swiftly on the heels of this week’s glance at our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) community, it’s now time to turn our attentions to our second supported league, with the Sky Sports game coming into focus. As always, we list our top managers, assess the transfer trends and this week report back on those offering the best value amongst the player list…

The Scout League

Charles Mouzon continues to reign in the Scout League – his “Geordie Boys” are holding off Chris Tuck’s “Vuvuzela Symphony” by six points going into this weekend, with Paul Hennessey still sits snugly in third spot; his “Hennessey’s Heroes” are some 17 points off the top now.

Hennessey also keeps the company of two others tied on 731. Tony Senior and Lewis Nicklen both ensure that we have five names in the overall top 20 in this game. In the race for the £25k top prize, Charles Mouzon is now 35 points off the chase, closing the gap from last week as we edge towards the hectic Christmas programme. Our top five stretched their lead in the Private League rankings this week, we now sit a full 22 points ahead.

A reminder that if you’re playing the Sky Sports game and have yet to join our league, you can sign up to the FFScout League with this Pin: 8004519. We have a home cinema system, worth £600, available to the winner.

Market Forces

Mirroring this week’s popularity in the FPL transfer market, Luis Suarez dominates the transfers in this week: the Liverpool man has been party to almost 38% of the trades made in the last seven days, a stat that is no doubt fueled by shock sales of Robin Van Persie at the other end of the spectrum. The Dutchman was moved on by over 20% of his owners this week off the back of his blank at Carrow Road; only West Brom’s injured stopper, Ben Foster, suffered more trades out.

Bizarrely, over 20% of Sky Sports managers brought in Marouane Fellaini this week, despite his impending ban this weekend for the Norwich clash at Goodison. Goalkeepers remain a popular trade, with both Asmir Begovic and John Ruddy enjoying heavy traffic this week, picking up Ben Foster’s owners off the back of their recent form.

Both Ruddy (9.13 per million) and Begovic (9.02 per million) have offered oustanding value of late but still trail West Ham’s Jussi Jaaskelainen in that respect for the season as a whole. The Hammers keeper has returned 9.21 points per million thus far.

A West Ham man is also top of the defender value rankings. Joey O’Brien’s goal in the 1-1 with Stoke means that he has now offered 10.52 points per million so far this term, with team-mate Winston Reid clocking up 10.25 in second. Given the Hammers schedule of fixtures, it seems unlikely that that pairing can go on delivering strong returns in the short-term, however.

In midfield, Arsenal’s Santi Cazorla is now, pound for points, the top midfielder on offer. The Spaniard has delivered 13.88 points per million so far in his first season in the top flight. The likes of Fellaini, Michu and Raheem Sterling rank behind him, all presenting outstanding returns for their price tags.

Up front, the value is more limited but Luis Suarez’s recent form has seen him ascend to the top of the rankings. The Uruguayan has delivered 9.79 points per million going into the weekend, comfortably ahead of Demba Ba in second on 8.44.

The Fantasy Football Club

The cheeky Dennis Wise will scurry into the studio for tonight’s episode Fantasy Football Club, no doubt with plenty to say on Rafa’s appointment at Chelsea. Tonight also sees the draw for the Qualifying Round of the Fantasy Football Club Cup apparently – intriguing. Join Fenners and Merse from 10pm tonight on Sky Sports One.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

To add to the Baines issue. If he is being viewed as this "6th midfielder", surely his stats should be viewed against the mid price options available.
I'm pro-Baines so my defence of him would be that:
He's already earned similar returns to the popular mid priced options such as Nolan, Michu, Morrison.
granted he's slightly more expensive than these options but he has amassed these points without really contributing with clean sheets or penaltys, (which by law of average will come eventually).
    Just my thoughts.....

The difference is that you can play in a defensive slot. He essentially allows you to play with 6 mids.

Thats my arguement! he's being viewed as an expensive defender when really he's a mid priced midfielder which allows you to free up a precious midfield spot.

There is nothing called the law of averages, any belief that he is "due" goals or clean sheets simply because he's not getting them now is bullshit.

If you include his big points hauls then yes, he has performed at mid-price midfielder level. But I always ask of players "what have you done for me lately?". His returns for the last 6 weeks have been rather poor for a £7.3m midfielder. And that was during the best run of fixtures they have all season.

Not concluding anything for definite yet but I don't really buy this midfielder argument unless he starts returning midfielder scores again.

If he was a 7.0m+ midfielder you would have sold him by now for underperforming.

I think he only needs to perform better than the worst midfielder you'd happily play over any other defender. The price doesn't come in to it so much for me, you're buying an extra mid slot with that.

That is an interesting way to look at it, but I can't help but feel that the price of buying an extra midfield slot has to be justified by midfielder returns. Last 6 weeks he has returned the equivalent of one goal and one assist. That's borderline.

Pens are something, worth 2 or 3 goals a season. Corners and free kicks don't seem to have brought him many returns so far, they certainly didn't last season, so I don't value them.

I think what I'm struggling with is two questions.

            1) Should I be happy with his recent returns?
            2) If not, is there any real reason to expect that they will improve?

The answer to 2) is definitely No for me. But I honestly don't know how I should answer 1). What do veterans say? This is the real skill of FPL - how much is good enough? I think it must takes a lot of experience to get to that judgement.

I agree, a case of being comfortable in your own skin, a defender I play every week, without having to think about it. Always that positive feeling that you are in with a chance, plus he plays every game, and is rarely injured. The possibility also of that dream week when your captain, and he with a few others deliver together with him.I never find FPL boring owning Baines.

Seen a few folk on here saying AJ not a good option. Not many reasons though. He's a hugely talented attacking footballer with a point to prove. Has decent home fixtures, has scored well in the last two and is cheap. Why not?

If there was a time to get Rooney, it is now. He's fit and very important to United as the NOR game showed.
Also, he won't be playing too deep because United play relatively weaker teams. A great differential for the next 3.

Doesn't sound very adventurous to me if you own RVP. More foolish and naive. If you want to sell RVP for Rooney I would be all for it as a punt. Saying he's good for these fixtures though suggests he may not be as good for others. So as a direct replacement for RVP it doesn't sound like this kind of view instils a lot of confidence.

You'll have a great keeper option for 50% of your games (who will net you 4-5 pts a week), and 2-3 pts the rest of the time

How about Ba -> Berbatov, and Gazza to (Mig, Szczesny, Foster once he is better, etc.)

in that way, you get virtually an equivalent striker, but also have a viable keeper strategy that could see 6 pts per week

If Ba flops v saints and given baines has tough games after norwich

Im tempted to do after this GW

    in

Rooney - my rivals has RVP so a nice diff
    Gunter - 5th defender

    OUT

    Ba
    Baines

Berbs and Suarez are to important to consider selling at this stage.

Taarabt used to play for Spurs. Harry loaned him out and even after he showed promise he let him go.

As Mac said earlier, once you're in Harry's bad books, hard to come back out.

Going cold on having Valencia now - looking at revisiting my plan last week which was to get Rooney in alongside RVP. Luckily I didn't go ahead with it last week, I didn't even know he was going to miss it with tonsilitis and United had a mare at stubborn Norwich.

The questions for me are -
will he start all three games this week
are his absences this year just plain bad luck so I don't have to worry about him disappearing?
is he still on penalties? (Sorry for restarting this).
