Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 14 – Tuesday

Christian Benteke claims the points for Villa with a late header at home to Reading helping Paul Lambert’s men climb out the drop zone. Harry Redknapp’s first match in charge at QPR ends in a goalless draw at Sunderland, boosting the latter’s appeal ahead of their double Gameweek 16…

Benteke the Villains’ Hero
We handed the Belgian a Scout Picks starting role and he vindicated our faith by nodding home the winner as Villa edged their way up the table. Benteke went into last night’s game with attacking returns in two of his last three home games and although Villa are finding it hard to find the net with any regularity, his contribution is vital – he has had a hand in four of their five goals from Gameweek 9 onwards. The fixture list gets tricky from Gameweek 17 but upcoming games against QPR and Stoke will offer optimism for those eyeing up his acquisition.

Villa’s Improving Backline
Granted, Paul Lambert’s side have shipped three and five to City and United respectively in recent matches but on either side of those displays, Villa have produced three clean sheets. The front lines of Sunderland, Arsenal and, last night, Reading have all been kept at bay, suggesting that Lambert’s side may offer us possibilities at the back. In terms of popularity, Ciaran Clark is their top-owned defender with 2.1%, while, perhaps surprisingly, their 4.5 priced right-back Matt Lowton has accrued just four less points than United’s Rafael, highlighting his cut-price potential.

Royal Backline Rotation
Brian McDermott made the surprise decision to drop Kaspars Gorkss to the bench, with Adrian Mariappa partnering Sean Morrison in the heart of defence for the Sunderland trip. The Latvian’s owners will be a little concerned by last night’s omission – he had previously played every minute of the season and has received 60,000 transfers in since Gameweek 11. The Reading boss also freshened up the right-back area as Shaun Cummings was selected for the first time since Gameweek 9, with Chris Gunter dropping out. Nicky Shorey looks the only nailed-on option now and has started the last 10 at left-back; allied with his constant source of creativity from the flank, he looks the worthiest contender for our Fantasy attention amongst Reading’s defence heading into their double Gameweek. Certainly Brian McDermott’s comments post-match indicated that he could maintain his new centre-back partnership…

“I thought Morrison and Mariappa handled him [Benteke] really well. Morrison looks like a good prospect, he’s only 21 and with Mariappa – an international – the combination was fine.”

QPR Defensive Resolve
Prior to last night, the Loftus Road outfit had failed to pick up a clean sheet in seven away matches but Harry Redknapp managed that feat in his first match in charge. Taking Sunderland’s scoring woes into consideration, it’s a little early to be too optimistic over QPR’s defensive assets but Redknapp’s side will be buoyed by their display at the back – they had a single clean sheet in 13 matches overall heading into the Stadium of Light encounter. With a kind fixture list up next (AVL, wig, FUL) on their short-term agenda, 4.0 priced Ryan Nelsen’s 5% FPL owners may be a little more confident of handing him a starting role, while Clint Hill (4.3) has come back into favour at centre-half following the departure of Mark Hughes at the back. Stephane Mbia – classified as a defender – seems to be preferred in central midfield by Redknapp.

Cesar Worry for Redknapp
Post-match, the QPR boss revealed Julio Cesar is set for scans after being subbed off injured at half-time against Sunderland. Rob Green climbed off the bench and was afforded some encouragement by his manager – if Cesar is ruled out, the former West Ham stopper will be hoping to improve upon a record of nine goals conceded in his first three starts at the club early on this season:

“Julio looks like he’s done a groin. We’ll send him for a scan on Thursday, once the swelling goes down a bit, and see what the extent of the injury is. We’re lucky that we’ve got two top goalkeepers. Rob is an England international keeper and made a fantastic save when he came on. He didn’t have a lot to do apart from that save, but when he was called into action he was fantastic.”

Sunderland Defence Back on Radar
The Black Cats also showed an upturn in resilience after Saturday lunchtime’s 4-2 home mauling at the hands of West Brom. With a trip to Norwich preceding home games against Chelsea and Reading in the double, Simon Mignolet climbed to fourth in the FPL keeper rankings with an eight point return, while Carlos Cuellar’s 4.5 price tag looks enticing. John O’Shea and skipper Lee Cattermole were both given last minute fitness tests – the latter was the only one passed fit but he lasted a mere seven minutes and both could well be doubts ahead of double Gameweek 16.

Black Cats Stutter Again
Ahead of the double Gameweek 16, Stephane Sessegnon and Steven Fletcher have received plenty investment in light of their recent returns but the pair’s failure to find a way past QPR will cause some concern. With a tricky trip to Norwich now on the cards, it’d be no real surprise to see the duo draw blanks again this weekend; a scenario that may well see the transfers in slow down prior to the double.

In Other News
While much of Rafa Benitez’s press conference centred around Fernando Torres yesterday, the new Chelsea boss also took time to speak of the importance of his defence. While the Spaniard’s debut in the Bridge dugout harvested a first clean sheet since Gameweek 5, it was also the first time the London outfit have failed to score at home this season, denting confidence in Eden Hazard and Juan Mata a little:

“If you are strong in defence, you can regain the ball easier, you will have more chances as you will have more possession, so that’s the idea. We will try to improve the shape of the team but keep their quality and mobility. The main thing now is to find a balance. Defensively we will continue working and we will improve because normally defence is easier than attack. In attack we have players with talent; we have players with quality, so we have to find this balance. Defending well and giving the ball to the attacking players to create is our main issue now.”

Benitez also discussed Cesar Azpilicueta’s display at right-back. The 5.6 priced FPL defender has now started the last four league matches but his manager’s words suggest Azpilicueta not be a guaranteed starter, once he has a fully-fit squad to choose from:

“When a player isn’t playing every week you are expecting something, but I am not the type of manager who expects a player to come in and be perfect. Everybody can make mistakes, but the main thing for me was his attitude and intensity. We were looking for him to get forward, we didn’t have Terry or [Gary] Cahill, so he was a good option for us.”

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Fletcher, Norwich have been solid at home recently and Sunderland are hardly goal machines. Sterling looks dangerous whenever he plays and Southampton are still set up to attack despite their recent cleanies.

Simply is Ramirez worth £1.5m more than Puncheon? I really don't think so. His stats suggest that they should score at a similar rate. I prefer the cash and rotate Puncheon as the 4th/5th mid. Or buy 4 big hitters and bench Puncheon.

    Ba > Berbatov
both Newcastle and Fulham have depleted midfiled so lesser supply but scout believes Newcastle may move to 4 3 3 makes Ba an even lesser goal threat Berbatov should do better than Ba given that Duff is still around and Ruiz is coming back sooner than Cabaye and he is also cheaper and would allow me to upgrade the defense

but shots on target that are saved arent scoring, so really they are failing, when in fact a keeper saving is succeeding in his job. So it is actually rewarding failure, like the bankers bonus or politicians salaries, or that bbc guy who was rubbish, which is wrong in anyones book

I just think it's odd that a striker benefits more than a goalkeeper when a goalkeeper does what he's paid to do, and a striker does not!

True. I love the idea of the PPI system but it definitely needs some tweaking. I think if a keeper saves a pen its the same thing!

what i dont understand is if a player misses a penalty the keeper does'nt get points if he does'nt save it.. surely it's a mental battle and the keeper deserves the save points either way

But then by that logic, a save is more valuable than a shot on target that is saved, therefore more PPI should be awarded. It works like that for goals, assists, red and yellow cards, and everything else that scores points.

Its difficult to determine the intensity of save as whether it was a brilliant save, good save or average save while a shots to be saved should be within the perimeter of goal, with power in it ....a gentle nudged shot held by a keeper is never a shot on target while it could be consider a save, upon missing it leads to own goal not a striker's goal

Baines or Ivanovic out for Enrique. Which one do you guys reckon is the best bet. Chelsea got the better short term fixtures but think baines still has that attacking edge on ivanovic esp with penos in the bag.

the fact Liverpool were playing Europa League games in July before they had even had a proper game under Rodgers reduces its appeal.

'Champions League' tells me that the teams who are in this won their respective league the previous year. This must be the case with about 10-15 teams in the CL out of 32.

Its an awful idea. They can do one simple thing, let the winners of the Europa league into the champions league. You won't see clubs fielding weaker teams then.

Interesting. A shame it's brought in when Villa are struggling to be a top half side! If 7 clubs from England were involved, it seems like the PL would be less competitive for CL spots to be honest - 4 or 5 clubs would make it in with a lot of time to spare. So the battle will be for 7th position and not 4th. But overall I'd say it's good for English teams as we're a very strong league so CL funding 7 clubs as opposed to 4 would only strengthen the teams in England. And arguably, strengthening 7 teams over 4 teams will lower the inequality we see with revenues throughout the league.

23 points from 2 players last night - Benteke (c) paid off (assuming Fellaini, Michu, Santi or Suarez don't outscore him tonight, obv).

Next big decision....which Arsenal player to go for to double up on with Santi? I'm thinking Berbatov to Giroud, but could equally do Riise to an Arsenal defender.

If Liverpool were to get beat 1-0 anytime soon, the returns would be null.

It does look good in that if no attacking returns are made from them, theres the potential for Enrique to get a CS etc.

I brought him in 2 GWs ago for the run of games Arsenal have - just have to hope they can start picking up some CS now as they're not actually conceding many chances. They're just prone to a mess up here and there, which costs them a goal.

Yup, that sums them up. Second top for not conceding chances but top of the table for errors and errors leading to goals.

My take on this is that since they can shut anyone out and are only undone by their random errors, they will keep plenty of clean sheets but they will be completely unpredictable so if you own one you have to play them every week. Frustrating but I think it will pay off.

I have Sagna and I'm not going to waste a transfer swapping because I think he is still first choice for the majority of games. But if I could have either at this point it would be Mert, just for maximum security and a few more pennies in the bank.

I did actually have Gibbs a few GWs back, but his proneness to injury is annoying. With their run of games, Sagna will stay for the next 7 games, unless he gets injured.

Expecting a few attacking returns as well.

He almost had an assist in the Spurs game too. Am keeping and they will get cleansheets in the easy games.

Were we allowed to pick Sunderland players in our teams? Cause some fella's loaded up on them and making his way to the top. Not cool.

With A, you're ditching both your Everton players? And with B, you're keeping both, inspite of their fixtures? Maybe a rethink with keeping one of them.?

        A for me.

Cheers. I'd have to ditch both in (A) to afford the players I'm bringing in. Could ditch Fellaini instead of Michu in (B) though ?

There's a guy in my cash ML who serves as a lesson to us all about not letting your real world allegiances dictate your fantasy team. He is a rabid Utd fan and refuses to have any City in his team. That's not devastating this year but last year it was crazy.

Right now he has a front three of RVP - Rooney - Hernandez! The rest of his team is muck but at least he's happy 🙂

I don't think it's all bad TBH. It at least would be a single competition worth winning. Could increase prize money too so even quarter and semi finalists win more than you would have by winning the Europa League. Unfortunately, they could no longer call it the Champions League. And you might end up with the farce of small teams resting players for games they can't win / big teams resting players for games they will win.

CL already has a large amount of teams that don´t have Champion status, that would ruin the whole meaning of the competition.

So what's the story on Cuellar missing out on BAPs? (Bardsley owner here so disinterested). Is it the yellow? Or does his rather decent set of defensive statistics not add up to enough?

Not enough. Appears he didn't get as many blocks(account for a fair chunk of +PPI for defenders) as Kilgallon and Nelsen. No yellow would've made him closer but probably still not enough

Ah yes. At least that part is consistent. A blocked shot is counted as a shot off target for a forward and a considerable loss of PPI. And a block is a considerable gain of PPI for a defender.
