From the Physio – Gameweek 15

Reports emanating from Goodison Park this week could well serve as the final tree shake for frustrated owners of Leighton Baines. David Moyes, in his post-match press conference following the battling comeback against Arsenal, suggested that the Toffee’s talismanic left-back had sustained a hamstring injury…

“I think Leighton Baines has got a bit of a hamstring injury. He felt it in the game and he played on for the last 10 or 15 minutes.”

Taking a look at the first 30 minutes of the second half in isolation, we witness Baines involved throughout, his marauding forays down the wing allied to a burgeoning vision and awareness established an assuredness in the versatile fullback that allowed him to orchestrate the left channel at will. The George Harrison, 70’s style ‘Movember Tash’ that Baine’s can be seen sporting, seemingly not putting him off in the slightest.

During this initial period in the half, we witness Baines moving with fluid ease and agility, performing football specific, high intensity movements that test the integrity of the hip and knee joints fully, actions that would isolate any injuries and from a physio perspective, there were no visible injury indicators.

A subsequent observational kinesthetic analysis of the final 15 minutes of the match adds further credibility to the initial assessment. Here, again, we witness the England International performing a full array of high intensity movements around the hip and knee and joints, leaping, tackling, taking corners and uni-lateral movements including accelerating and decelerating whilst changing direction. These are important indicators as they are some of the most mechanically demanding match actions and broken down form part of a battery of tests utilised to confirm match fitness.

The intensity and range of actions Baine’s exhibits in the last 15 minutes plus injury time mirrored that of the first 30 minutes, again, without reaction, impediment or abnormal gait patterns evident. Additionally, Hamstring muscles usually injure by either a forceful contraction or a direct blow and the full-back appeared to navigate the half without any significant incidents of note, indeed, David Moyes still had a substitution to use if an injury was feared.

In summary, I suspect that Baine’s felt some soreness or tightness as the match closed out, indicating a very minor muscle injury that treated immediately and nursed subsequently should well resolve within 7 days and although the Manchester City match this weekend is a possibility, it perhaps comes too soon, indicating December 9 when the Toffee’s entertain Tottenham as the most likely return date.

      I'm keeping for a while. The fixtures are still good, besides the derby, and until I see significant signs of rotation he is staying. The CSs should pick up as well.

      I'd keep if I had him. Utd DFers are coming back to fitness en masse and in the last game at least Utd showed a bit more solidity at the back. Rafa was still charging up the field too.

      Too expensive for us none-owners though now 🙁

      O.k, he's useful not fantastic. At 5.5 he was a steal. At 6.5 he isn't and as he can be sold for £6m it's tempting to sell. Their fixtures are still kind though, but you do worry he will miss a game soon. But if his price keeps rising there reaches a point where it makes sense to sell (although the counter argument is that for his price to keep rising he must still be providing good returns).

      I think the minute Man U's fixtures become more difficult or rotation is apparent he gets sold.

      For now he stays, but the January wildcard would be a good time to sell if he can keep providing returns (even though I don't think they have been that great to warrant the £1m price rise - perhaps down to potential rather than realisation).

    I need to sort my defence out but I have one ft and no cash.

    Baines (injured)
    Saylor (injured)
    Gunter (injured/dropped)
    Cameron
    Cuellar

    I can't think of a defender I want for £4.9m or less.

    So...

    A) Baines & Saylor -> Nastajevic & Evans (4 points)
    B) Baines -> Nastajevic
    C Baines -> Evans
    D) Saylor & Michu -> Taraabt & Nastajevic (4 points)

    I can see many having the same problem with the 'who to bench puzzle'.

    Had been thinking about this and have come to the weird (maybe wrong) conclusion that having Sterling isnt such a great thing.

    If you have Sterling plus a line up of Michu, Silva, Fellani, Bale, Tevez, RVP and Berba you are basically never going to play Sterling.Guess this is evn truer for owners of Suarez and Enrique, though i guess not too many people will triple on 12th place Liverpool who have the same points as Norwich!

    Is is not better to get a Puncheon type and use the cash elsewhere?

    Im undecided on this and wondered what others think

          I'd play Sterling ahead of both Fellaini and Michu this weekend though, so wouldn't see it as a waste of time. At some stage over Xmas one of these players will annoying miss a game and assuming they don't just come off the bench, you'll have a suitable replacement (not that Puncheon is awful).

      Love your point about 12th place Liverpool. They really are average in reality. I think I agree with you...he's a bit of a nuisance. But if he does sustain a good points average then it seems silly to sell right now. Seeing as a) that's a good thing if you want to play him and b) everyone else has him and will get those points off a player who is under 6m = value!!

        Yeah ur prob right just putting it out there.

        The 12th place thing- put another teams name such as Villa, Norwich or Newcastle over Liverpools in the league table and you wouldnt be getting this interest in their players. The name still attracts people and blinkers them to reality. Would you have 3 Villa, Newcastle or Norwich players???

      This is true for those who missed the boat on sterling.

      Your argument is invalid if he was bought at 4.5 anyway, unless you intent to realise the profit to buy another player.

      The benching "problem" isnt really a problem. Its a luxury.
      Sometimes, one of your strikers get dropped and you have that luxury to play five decent mids.

      disagree, Sterling is an excellent sub to have coming in when, for example Tevez doesn't play. With christmas squad rotation I think sterling will end up in the team most weeks even when he's on your bench. He will also cover any short term injuries.

      Took all of my will power not to do this yesterday. My reasoning is that Baines is still the same prospect he has always been although surely his run of bad luck can't continue.

      While Enrique is currently oop but not yet scoring goals. With Lucas coming back and other wide options available this bandwagon could be rather shortlived unless he does start finding the net.

      Assuming Baines is out for one week only then I say wait til after the weekends games and then decide on this move....

    Bale Cazorla Mata Sterling (Puncheon)
    Rvp Ba Suarez

    1 FT
    1.7 in bank

    A) Save transfer (Let's me get rid of mata and ba next week for free)
    B) Gorkks to Nastasic/Mertesacker (Gives me a defender with a chance of CS this week and lettin me bench cuellar) .. Nastasic looks a defensive bargain at his current price

    tbh, WBA look more threatening and judging by Benitez's ultra-defensive tactics, Jaaskelainen's CS chance looks better, though Stoke have a more solid defence. So who is it?

        He's not prone to rotation in the strictest sense, plays every game bar the last one where he's rested. He doesn't play 90 though but gets enough points to justify his price for me. Sterling has 2 assists, same game, in 6 games. I think Michu's form justifies me putting him in. I won't transfer in a player and not start him, mind you I've transferred in a lot! Sagna is injured and I saw Clark v Reading during the week. Probably neither will keep a CS but Clark' s better for a goal.

      Walcott (c)?

      He's a doubt. I wouldn't.

        @Lateriser – I saw earlier that you ditched Sagna for a hit while drunk. Would you recommend it in the cold light of day?

          I'll tell you what to do. Get wasted tonight and do it. Its the only solution.

            Fantastic. It's ages since I got wasted. White Russians are a classy way to do it. You don't notice how drunk you are until you suddenly realise you're crawling.

      Hmm, not sure I would for a hit. Arsenal do have a great fixture and Chelsea have a blank coming up and haven't scored under rafa. Lots of others are taking hits so gut call I think. Can you wait to see if more assurance is given on walcotts fitness?

    Following the double gameweek for Sunderland, there is every chance they will be in the relegation zone by the New Year. Plan your exits from that defence particularly those of us that are doubling up!

    Final decision to make is the captain choice - RVP or Suarez? Got it on Suarez for now.

        It feels like an accident waiting to happen, RVP is (generally) such a reliable captain choice, against a team who leaks goals. Going to stick with it I think though.
