Watchlist

The Watchlist – Kevin Nolan

Many moons ago, it was common practice within the Fantasy Football community to refer to a combination of Cristiano Ronaldo, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard as “The Holy Trinity”. The cost was considerable, but many a season was saved by their union in a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) squad. With those days now long past, the opening months of this campaign threatened the establishment of a new Nicene creed of marauding midfielders. Playing just off, or sometimes as, the striker – the mid-price potency of Michu, Marouanne Fellaini and Kevin Nolan was such that Mark and Granville were left pondering whether the current FPL fabric could long contain the latest revelations.

Whilst Michu is still exalted atop the midfield points list, and the progress of Fellaini tempered only by his temper, Kevin Nolan has spent the last 40 days wandering in the wilderness – and given the recent inundation of the West Ham fixture list it’s difficult to blame him. Since Gameweek 10 The Hammers have been plagued by visits from Man City, Stoke, Chelsea, Liverpool and Everton, and endured unhappy exoduses to Newcastle, Spurs, Man Utd and West Brom.

With their Boxing Day blank now behind them, the claret and blue tribe have at last reached the promised land, in terms of fixtures. This Saturday’s trip to Reading marks the start of a seven Gameweek run (rdg, NOR, sun, QPR & ars, ful, SWA, avl) that should afford Sam Allardyce’s attacking assets every chance to go forth and multiply their returns. That run includes a double fixture in Gameweek 23, with two London derbies against QPR and Arsenal on offer.

Bagging four goals and two assists in just eight games before the schedule took a turn for the worse, Nolan has an overwhelming edge over his team mates in terms of bang for one’s attacking buck – and at a current valuation of 6.6 in FPL (4.9 in the Sky Sports game) he is now substantially cheaper than both Michu and Fellaini. Whilst his overall ownership is still high, at 18%, it is likely that amongst active players his ownership is considerably lower, and whilst perhaps not approaching differential status his long barren run has certainly served to sink him below the mainstream radar at a useful time for the more dedicated player.

Andy Carroll’s absence through injury has been cited as another factor behind Nolan’s recent slide but with the giant Geordie expected to return to training next week, Nolan’s potential could be set for an upturn. If Nolan can avoid fifth yellow card at the Madejski and perhaps re-announce himself with a goal, a new bandwagon may well start warming its engines.

As the likes of Gareth Bale and Juan Mata continue to bring home the bacon at the pricier end of the scale, and cut-price alternatives such as Raheem Sterling and Jason Puncheon retain their popularity in the “fifth mid” spot – a squad containing all three of Michu, Nolan and Fellaini (upon the latter’s return from suspension in Gameweek 21) will doubtless represent an unusual setup. With the approach of winter wildcard season affording Fantasy Managers the chance to experiment with a get-out-of-jail-free card in their pocket, though, a reformation to 3-5-2 to incorporate the new Holy Trinity may yet turn water into wine for potential proselytes.

stilicho I never make predictions and I never will

    Platt said this on Tevez:

"He was a bit under the weather before Sunderland and we gave him the day off yesterday (Thursday) just to keep him away from the place, we don't want nothing like that spreading, but he should be back in this morning"

Sounds like Tevez has been a little bit unhappy recently.

Still dont get all the pre-planning everyone is doing for the DGW from this GW itself and getting in Arsenal players like Cazorla, Walcott, Sagna, Gibbs and Mertesacker...

Arsenal have NEW, SOU, MCI before the DGW and CHE and WHU in the DGW.. Other than the SOU game, none of the other games look like straight forward Clean Sheet games for Arsenal...

Meaning the Arsenal defenders can probabaly expect 2 pointers in each of the other 4 games...

With Giroud fit again, Walcott maybe pushed back into a wider role and IMO Cazorla is no going to score a double digit score in any of the 4 games (other than maybe at SOU game)...

So what is the point of getting in all the Arsenal players now itself and some are even doing it for hits...

I've got Ba so that might be my Arsenal cover 😉 However I agree I'm just going with 3 WHU for the DGW Jaas, Demel, Nolan I think. WHU fixtures are much more attractive leading up to and after the the DGW even though they have been out of form and if Carroll returns - Bingo!

Decision made, I think now is a good time to sell Michu. Assuming he misses the Villa game, his next two are Everton(a) and Stoke(h). After that its GW24 when most will be wildcarding and can get him back in.

Currently, I want Bale, Mata, Walcott, Fellaini, Michu and Nolan in midfield. As well as being one midfielder too many, its also bloody expensive. Considering Michu's injury, a couple of dodgy fixtures post injury and the wildcard I'm selling.

Of course, this could go horribly wrong if he makes the Villa game but that's only 4 days away so I don't see it.

if it's just a knock he will be back for villa game most def.

As the game is only a few days away as you noted and he is not completely ruled out shows he probably will be back.

Swansea can't really afford to go without him for too long, I expect a few injections and pain killers to numb the pain (if any) and he will go against villa.

I can certainly appreciate that 😉 I would say wait until tonight anyways and see what is being said, if Swansea are still claiming that he "may be rested" and that his ankle "might" keep him out this week then I think it's worth keeping him. If they aren't even 100% sure he won't make Fulham then I could see Villa being on the cards.

Unlikely with Rooney injured, don't think SAF will risk Welbeck and Hernandez up front. Welbeck also a doubt.

Rooney injured is a good thing for him. RVP is his peak so he has no reason to be tired. He should be rested in the cup game. Also, even if he is, SAF will bring him on if a goal is needed or somethign along those lines and chances are he will get some sort of pointage if he does play, regardless as a starter or sub.

    B: Rafael >> sagna

    Help pleae!

    Definatey Out: Michu, Rooney, Shawcross
    Possibly Out: Suarez, Demel
    Not Starting: Shorey, Sterling

Allready transfered out Rooney and had to take a hit as I made another earlier transfer before all the injuries piled up! So -4 already.

So, what should I do? Dont want to ditch Shawcross as ill lose 0.5m on him. Do I sit tight and hope my doubts play - even if they do I may not have 11 players. Or take a further hit to give myself more starters?

Sit tight on shawcross, no point losing him. Michu will play unless he's really bad, same with Suarez. Also sterling could start. Don't panic, it's a better risk not losing points then losing them IMO! 🙂

Milan's home/away thing rules him out for me. He'll be good for gw's 21,23 & 25 and then go back to being worthless.

He's only produced one attacking contribution away all season and has never done anything against a solid defence at home.

This piece from Stili confirms my thinking. I think I'm going to ditch one of Saurez/Tevez and get Fellaini back in a 3-5-2. Probably Tevez will be the one to go. Will leave me no City cover though? But my front line will look like this:

    Mata Cazorla Nolan Michu Fellaini
    RVP Saurez/Tevez (6.0m)

Or I could get Silva and have a real dirt bag on the bench (Dong Won Ji at 4.2!) who will never play but it's a waste of a slot?

I prefer Caz, who I got at 9.0, and Mata at 8.9! Can't have them all! I had Bale before I got Saurez in 3-5-2, could switch back? I did Bale+Pog>Schneiderlin+Saurez.

RVP. United is a lot better team than Ars. But Uniteds run will come to an end soon and it is usually when you least expect it. A 7 point lead in the league? Okay, we'll make it interesting and let the other teams catch up and loose to Brom.
