The Stock Check

The Stock Check – Tuesday – Part Two

Southampton battle for a point at St Mary’s as Theo Walcott endures a frustrating evening on his return to his former stamping ground. Here’s the Stock Check on Saturday’s evening kick-off…

On the Up

Gaston Ramirez
Back in the side having been kept out of the heat of the Britannia battle, the Uruguayan fired home his third goal of the season to give the Saints the advantage. Ramirez has promised much since his arrival, without really catching fire as a Fantasy asset. With Adam Lallana seemingly sidelined for the foreseeable future, however, he looks to be a key figure in Southampton’s battle for survival and my yet draw our interest when fixtures fall kinder for Nigel Adkins’ men.

Jason Puncheon
A prime budget option, Puncheon has disappointed of late having looked to be making a mockery of his price tag. Nonetheless, the assist for tonight’s goal took him to six for the season and with two goals and a record that shows he’s started the last ten league matches, Puncheon is a reliable budget midfielder who offers attacking intent. He could yet show his worth if the Saints can improve their goal output.

The Southampton Defence
Prior to conceding three at Stoke, Nigel Adkins’ side had let in just four goals in six league outings. Tonight, the new resolute defence was again on show as Southampton worked tirelessly to stifle the Arsenal threat. Nathaniel Clyne missed out again with a knee problem but he and Jose Fonte are emerging as decent budget options in the light of the new emphasis on keeping things tight.

Going Down

Theo Walcott
While the Gunners man returned the assist for Do Prado’s own goal, Walcott suffered a miserable night back at his former club. Having seen little joy in the lone striker role, he was shifted to a wide role on the introduction of Oliver Giroud. Walcott cut a forlorn figure at the whistle and this was a far cry from the stunning display that helped see off Newcastle at the weekend.

Santi Cazorla
It’s just one assist in three matches now for the playmaker who has found himself dissolve into the background in Fantasy terms, as Walcott has come to the fore. Owners of Cazorla will surely have one eye on the double fixture in Gameweek 23 and hoping for a revival, while tonight’s showing from Walcott will perhaps do little to prompt the straight swap.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Any tacticians out there? I'm wondering how we will line up with debuchy in the team, as we will have two full backs who are essentially wingers so the midfield are going to have to do a lot of covering.

    Would we be better playing:

    --------Tiote------
    Cabeye--Anita/Jonas

With tiote dropping into centre back and one of the centre backs moving out to cover the fullback

    OR

    Anita---Jonas/Perch/Tiote
    ------Cabeye--------

With the two defensive mids covering the full backs themselves.

All the talk is that Debuchy is a done deal. But there has been no final confirmation.

Only heavy speculation about Remy. My guess is that there will be a number of clubs in for him. Hopefully we can get Ba sorted out one way of the other, so we have time to sort out the other deals that we want to do.

Debucy on the right, santon on the left. Simpson is out of contract in the summer so he will either go in this window, or in hte summer for free

For real football reasons, I would prefer Ba to go abroad, so non of our rivals benefit!! For fpl I hope he goes to arsenal in time for the DGW!!

I think Newcastle would fare much better with the first formation. However, considering Cisse and Ba are still likely to pair up front I think the 2nd formation will be used with long ball and all.

Cisse and Ba haven't been paired up front since the first few games of the season. Cisse has been playing on the right side of a front 3 for a while now, and has been USELESS!! He is a centre forward or nothing.

We have been playing a lot of long ball (apart from the last couple of games), but surely with two of the most attacking full backs in the league, and no target man, we won't continue to play like that!! I hope anyway!

If making tactics in Football Manager counts as a tactician. 😀

With A you need defenders who have some pace as they'll need to cover a lot of grounds especially if the opponent is playing through the wings which will definitely stretch out the defense. And I haven't watch a lot of Newcastle matches but how good is Santon and the other wingbacks defensively? If they often arrives late defensively then A wouldn't work.
But if they do, Anita would play instead of Jonas. Way too attacking with Jonas. There has to be at least another defensively decent midfielder.

B would be more defensive but allow the wingbacks to roam more. Which is good if playing with 4-3-3 with Ben Arfa and Ba (or Cisse, whoever on the left wing) cutting inside. And long ball can work here as well which, I'm not sure, but Newcastle good at? So I can see B being used later on.

I'm not sure though, coming from a manager who plays 4-2-3-1 in his Newcastle game 😛

Stock check articles lack consistency. When Berba was immense couple of weeks ago and didn't deliver the points he was going down because points matter and price was going down, potential or not. Now, Walcott is going down because he didn't look too good. However, he got the points and price is going up.

Not that i care so much. Fail, obviously i care enough to whine. Facer articles are the most useful anyway.

.Walcott doesnt have the box of tricks that will help him pass defenders.
so thats why he dont want to play along the by-lines. He gets cornered often against pacy defenders. unlike through the middle, where he can use his pace, and have both right and left hand side of the defender to go pass him.And yes, a big big selfish player.yesterday it was more than one occasion it happened that another player had better chance than him.
So it might be problem for arsenal, but not for The fpl prospect.
He is a better prospect wrt Fpl than Santi

One question, folks. Does the classic league deduct the point hit at the end of the gameweek or season? I took a point hit (-4) for this gameweek and it hasn't deducted anything from it but only updating the current gameweek scoring points.

After the first update after the deadline.
So if you score 40 points on the first day of games, you're season total only goes up by 36 that night

As it stands for you this week. You scored 54, but your score has gone from 1050 to 1100.
If you score 20 today it'll go to 1120 cos already been deducted.

Early thoughts. Go on. Bench one.

    Bale(qpr) Mata(sto) Michu(eve) Fellaini(SWA) Walcott(MCI)
    RVP(LIV) Suarez(mun) Berbatov(WIG)

Bale RVP and Berbatov definitely wont be benched. I am thinking bench Suarez, since i support Man United 😉

    morning chumps!

and in case i didn't see any of you on here during the last few days.....i still hate you.

    now, down to business:

    Mig
    Gibbs, Hughes, Vertonghen
    Michu, Mata, Pienaar, Walcott
    RvP, Tevez, Defoe

    Turnbull, Punch, Cuellar, Nelsen

    1) Good to go?
    2) Play Gibbs (MCI) or double up on SUN defence (WHU)?
    3) Tevez -> Ba or will he get some game time if Aguero has tweaked something?
    4) Anything else?

currently fellaini but simply just because he and his point returns are forgotten atm. in a couple of GWs we'll know better how he continues to perform. But whoever you decide to drop you should also compare him to your 3rd forward. If he's Berba, for example, does Fellaini at 7.4M offer better value/returns than Berba at 7.1M. Myself going with 5 mids.

imo forward slot is not more crucial than mid.

If you look at points per game, Only RVP has better than the top 5 mids. When looking at total score you have to remember Walcott started only 1 game the first 10 GWs, while top forwards Ba & Suarez have played every game. Im saying at the end of the season, it's possible (likely imo) that there are 5 mids scoring more than the 3rd best scoring forward. Therefore, id like to have 5 mids in my team.

I think most of us on here have exactly that dilemma. My current draft has Walcott missing out.

What made you decide that 5 big hitters doesn't work? I guess you had plenty of points on the bench. But I always think that its the points on the pitch that matter, not on the bench. Who cares if you bench somebody with a double pointer every once in a while, if overall you score better than you would have done with a cheapie there.

No its just the fact that I would play a 2pter and bench a 6+ pter. It really adds up in the end, and just found I can have extra firepower in the back or up front with a bench fodder mid that plays 90 every game.

But by rotating, you are eliminating the player with the toughest fixture every week, which will improve your overall score rather than having to play your forwards away to stoke or man city. Also, if you are going to have somebody like who matter who is a major rotation risk, much better to have a big hitter rather than a bench warmer to fill in!!

Anyway, I know you know all of this anyway. I'm just saying it for my benefit as much as yours. I currently can't decide which strategy to follow. If Marveaux keeps his place in the team, it could solve all of our problems!!

            Wilkinson Wilson O'Brian Demel 4.7M
            Mata Bale Fellaini Michu Barfa
            RVP Ba Fletcher

My team value is crap. Would either:

            1) rotate Barfa/Fletcher.
            2) rotate Ramirez/ Berba and get a big hitting defender (6.4m) OR
            2) get Marveaux + Suarez, if it looks like Marveaux will keep his place in the team.
