The Numbers Game – Festive Form – Midfielders

Continuing our members articles which examine the numbers behind the previous four Gameweeks, we now switch our attention to the midfield area. With a packed festive programme providing hat-tricks for Santi Cazorla, Gareth Bale and Theo Walcott, it was a period which again saw the heavy-hitting midfielder come to the fore. Incredibly, however, that trio were surpassed by the performances of a player who has rolled back the years to recapture a level of returns and consistency that we perhaps thought were behind him.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    I'm pulling my hair out with my WC .... thoughts on this: (team value just over 104m)

    GW22
    Bego (Bunn)
    Gibbs-Davies-Bassong (Harte)(Demel)
    Bale-Hazard-Mata-Michu (Nolan)
    Lambert-RvP-Dzeko
    4-4-3

    GW23
    Bale -> Walcott
    Hazard -> Fellaini
    Dzeko -> Tevez
    -8 transfer points

    Bego (Bunn)
    Gibbs-Bassong-Demel (Davies)(Hart)
    Nolan-Fellaini-Walcott-Mata-Michu
    RvP-Podolski (Lambert)

    GW24
    will have 2.0 in the bank
    and lots of options to upgrade back to Bale (and possibly swap in Tevez for Podolski, etc)

      Where does Podolski come from. I would prefer Fellaini for both weeks + 4 points as opposed to Hazard.

      Dzeko to Tevez too sideways for a hit. Why not keep him? Cheaper and a interesting differential.

      Bale to Walcott for a free then for GW23?

      We spent nearly the whole day at work discussing this very thing. The board-room was split.
      Some argued that Ba might not be ready to play the Chelsea way, and might not play both games. I was in the Ba camp though and felt that he must start both games and out-score Torres. We all felt that Chelsea would concede goals though so more worthwhile having Chelsea attacking .players

    Good article on Defensive wildcarders earlier. Off the back of yesterday's article on goalkeepers, I have made the decision to stick with Begovic and Jaaskelainen as I am safe with them and don't want to risk losing the value gained.

    However, in hindsight, I may keep Begovic and switch up Jaaskelainen for a cheaper alternative (Federici or Al Habsi), thus allowing Demel to come in as my West Ham defensive cover.

    I feel that defensively, I should be looking to cover Stoke City, West Ham, Norwich City and QPR. I feel these teams will represent the best value over the latter part of the season as having relatively tough, defensively minded managers.

    So I'm looking at Begovic, Demel, Bassong / Martin and a replacement for Nelsen.

    I've been risking early GW transfers all season and got bitten for the first time this GW!
    I did Enrique -> O'Brien to avoid the fall/ catch the rise. The Chelsea DGW was announced the following day, serves me right I suppose. Just hoping O'Brien is OK for the DGW.

    Nothing I can do about it now. I have only Torres & Puncheon as DGWers.

    I could get Mata for a -4 but I'd have to ship Cazorla or Walcott. Don't want to do this as it's an extra transfer wasted getting the Arsenal player back in the following week.

    So, here's my plan. It's risky.

    Do without Mata this week. Go Torres -> Tevez for GW23 (City home to Fulham). I have 3 Arsenal & 2 WH, so I'm much better set up for the second DGW anyway.

    WC after GW23....I hope all that makes sense and is a bit risky/ bit sensible? Thanks.

    Jussi - Turnbull
    Gibbs - Cuellar - Clark (Villa) - Demel - B Davies
    Walcott - Michu - Fellaini - Mata - Bale
    Suarez - Ba - Ruiz

    Also who to drop for GW22 from Fell/Michu/Walcott

      Welcome aboard!
      You'll have to waste a transfer on Turnbull later and it's always so hard to find a free one for a keeper.
      Cuellar possibly injured, wait on news.
      The big 5 in mid looks great.
      You know the risks of going RVPless. God luck!

        Cheers, in no rush to replace Turnbull as Jussi has a decent run of fixtures..

        Idea is to keep midfield barring injuries and use transfers up front to stop possible differentials.

        Probably change this ten times before 11.30 Sat!

      Catch up those who have RVP by having better other players than him, instead of not having him at all.

      Trying to win without RVP is like trying to win at golf without a driver in the bag.

      You'll be wishing you've got RVP when Suarez goes on a bad run, Ba is on the bench and you're relying on Ruiz.

      That midfield might help you but it won't make up for not having the Dutch lad

      Defence looks a bit cheapy - can you not get a biggy alongside Gibbs

    Another reason to ditch Michu on WC - Danny Graham's form might convince Laudrup to use him in behind Graham rather than as main striker

      Michu plays better in the hole, if you watch the majority of his goals have come from driving runs from the hole between midfield and defence, so no drop in form is expected IMO

    I've got the following set-up for this week:

    Begovic (or Jaaskelainen, if Cuellar plays, to spread the risk)
    Baines, Mertesacker, Cuellar (or Demel, depending on Cuellar injury news)
    Mata, Walcott, Michu, Puncheon
    van Persie, Suarez, Berbatov

    Jaaskelainen, Demel, Sterling, Nelsen

    1FT, 1.3m in the bank.

    My plan would be:
    Per Mertesacker --> David Luiz this week

    Next week:
    David Luiz --> Kieran Gibbs
    Raheem Sterling --> Kevin Nolan

    Then wildcard the following week. Thoughts?

        Thanks, I could also do Cuellar --> Azpilicueta this week, but I don't think he'll start both games or get as many points as Luiz will, and I want an excuse to get rid of Mertesacker.

        The weak points in my team are certainly Baines (value-wise), Mertesacker, Sterling and, now, Nelsen.

        I don't think I'll have enough money to do that, but I'll have a look next week. Either way it would just be for the one week so could even avoid the four point hit on Nolan.

        Only taken one hit this season though so I think I'm due a hit to spice things up sooner or later.

    Jaaskerlainen. Gazzaniga
    Walker Luiz. Gibbs. Demel. Harte

    This DGW (6 players)

    Turnbull (Szezney Next DGW 23)

    Baines Cole A Shaw (Demel + Sagna (Next DGW 23)

    Mata Puncheon Bale Santi Cazorla + (next DGW) Noble (Next DGW 23)

    Van Persie Berbatov Lambert

          But you're then eating into your profit - better to enter the DGWs with players you're happy with? THis might be at the expense of maxing the 6 for each one, when there's no guarantee such a heavy investment will pay off (eg Saints and West Ham)

            Thought of that, and I know where you are coming from , but wildcard is active and I want points now. To be fair Demel and Shaw are pretty useless but I tend to have two crap defenders. The nucleus of baines, bale, santi, VP, cole, mata/walcott, berbs and sagna will always be thereabouts.
