Watchlist

The Watchlist – Ian Harte

When Reading clinched promotion to the Premier League last season, Ian Harte was immediately pencilled in by many Fantasy managers as a cut-price defensive option for the following campaign. With set-pieces and spot-kicks in his locker, the veteran’s four goals and eight assists from 32 appearances last time out were indicative of his potential for the Royals but Nicky Shorey’s return to the Madejski quickly scuppered the best-laid plans.

Despite starting the opening three Gameweeks of the season, Harte was shifted to the bench in favour of Shorey after back-to-back hammerings at the hands of Chelsea and Tottenham prompted Brian McDermott into a defensive re-think. As the season progressed, Shorey looked nailed-on and, handed a share of free-kicks and corners, afforded us the Reading budget option Harte was supposed to have been.

Come Gameweek 18, though, McDermott’s tinkering brought Harte back into the equation. Having shipped nine goals in their previous two home games, the Reading boss shifted from a 4-4-2 to a 4-4-1-1 and this time it was Shorey’s turn to slip out the picture – a narrow 1-0 loss at City was followed by back-to-back clean sheets at the Madejski as McDermott’s decision to tighten up paid off handsomely.

Back on set-pieces once again, Harte also supplied an assist against Spurs and has averaged four points per game since his return to first-team action – with his appeal also supplemented by a 3.8 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag, the left-back once again enters our thoughts ahead of a run of three crucial home games in the next four.

While the upcoming visit of Chelsea is likely to deter most, McDermott’s side then play host to Sunderland and Wigan in the following three in addition to a trip to Stoke. With three wins in their last four, including a couple of comeback triumphs against West Brom and Newcastle, Reading have suddenly found their form and shown a fighting spirit that has defied the many doubters who had already consigned them to next season’s Championship.

Now just a point from safety, these next few matches will be crucial to their hopes of survival and will be earmarked by McDermott as a definite source of points – the schedule is set to turn nasty around Gameweek 28, with trips to Everton, United and Arsenal highlighting the task at hand. Although Harte was omitted from Saturday’s 4-0 FA Cup win over Sheffield United – with Shorey returning to the side once again – like fellow Royals budget option, Alex Pearce, it’s thought that this was simply a cup rotation tactic in light of two league games within the next week.

Fantasy managers can sit back and watch for the teamsheet against Chelsea: should Harte be re-installed in the starting line-up for Wednesday’s clash, he could be primed to finally vindicate that collective show of faith he initially received last summer and looks a definite cut-price prospect for our backlines over the short-term, at the very least.

Took a nostalgic look at videos of Bale's touches during the hattrick against Villa, United goal and brace against Norwich last year and each of the goals came from Bale being in a central position off the striker, a lot closer to CAM than LW. I don't know if there are ways to predict if he'll be playing more centrally, but it certainly seems associated with goals.

Too often in recent games he has been chained to the left touchline and his crosses easily fielded - the United game is a perfect example when Rafael and Jones pushed him out wide. That was the other thing I noticed from the videos - when out wide, Bale did plenty of fancy dribbling but his crosses weren't very efficient. Certainly, you buy him for his goals and not his assists, of which he only has 3. I wouldn't be surprised if some were rebounds from shots.

What this is all building up to is, will he play central away to Norwich? I'm willing to take the 1-week punt before my GW25 WC.

Nah I do see Dempsey playing striker - that way round is much more natural for both players IMO. Perhaps if Defoe misses out, Bale will drift more central?

Put this another way, I think if you're hoping him to cut inside from wide left and find the corner of the net, the odds aren't great. I think that one game against Inter when he completely roasted an over the hill Maicon has misled us a bit.

I always thought Dempsey was better suited to playing centrally and was stuck on the left as some way to get him into the team.

But thinking about it, AVB has been playing 4-4-2 of late with Defoe and Ade/Dempsey CF. If Defoe is out this week (ade is at ACON) I guess AVB will have to play 4-2-3-1 with a lone striker and Bale LAM. I fancy he would cut inside more - in fact wasn't that the system he was playing in under Harry during his good spells last year?

Nice points. I remember when he played at Norwich last year, he was pretty much playing as a forward/off the striker and his goals came from running right through the centre of the Norwich defence if I remember rightly?

Any kind of discussion that helps me to sleep at night without Bale in my team is more than welcome.

I'm standing firm in my belief that nor, wba, whu, liv are 4 tough away games, in terms of scoring a lot of goals. If they were all at home, I couldn't risk it, but those sides have pretty good home defensive records.

They are. All four sides are known for their home defensive strength.

When I saw Bale had nor this week I initially wasn't even considering, but seeing how their defence has collapsed of late I'm investigating a bit more. Might not be the same personnel and form they had during the amazing 1-0s over Arsenal, United.

BUT he wasn't even starting 5 weeks ago until Newc got all them injuries...........and now Cabaye is back and they signed 6 players so he might not get into the team again .........

As long as Sunderland are on form Fletcher will be involved. Thinking of getting him to rotate with Taarabt maybe (if I don't get Fellaini).

I understand the appeal of DDG, to an extent, but I would not bring him in. Demel > Clyne imo. I would go with Suarez over Aguero due to rotation risk. I think better options exist than Berbatov.

The Pro Bowl? Don't know if it's improved recently but it was usually pretty shambolic due to the highly organised nature of the sport and lack of time to absorb a playbook.

      Exhibition game anyway. Wouldn't bother.

Transfers made and I'm sticking this week but now thinking about either
    Ramirez + Taraabt (switching) or
    Michu + Guthrie

Option 1 means one simple transfer while the 2nd option would mean a double transfer
This week will have a big bearing..

Fellaini, mata, Walcott, Ramirez , Nolan
    RvP, Ba, Fletcher

    0.7 in bank!
    Thoughts? Thanks

Trade Pierce, Garnett and Terry for young assets. Blow it up and build around Rondo. They won't make the playoffs this year; they should tank instead and get a lottery pick for next season.

    Ban the second wildcard.
    Just get rid of it.
I don't even believe that it "re-ignites" interest from the dead teams and/ or the casual player, so they're not even making extra revenue from it.
Dump it, bin it, chuck it. I hate it.
Since it's been introduced I find it extremely difficult NOT to conform to the *template* winter-WC team and it drives me mad.

For the love of God, FPL...reward the real players...the one's who actually do raise extra revenue by logging onto your site every single day and thus providing your commercial partners a data base of potential customers.

Get rid of the second WC. Down with this sort of thing.

            Haha. I'm not that brave.

            Beg/ Fed
            Baines, Bertrand, Pearce, Harte, Davies.
            Bale, Walcott, Fellaini, Taarabt, Puncheon.
            RVP, Aguero, Suarez.

.....but I am a bit mental. Triple Reading defence FTW....I'll give Doos a run for his money. I'm fed up with this season so I'm gonna go crazy with the WC

It gives those that have been unfortunate a chane to bounce back..
Finished inside the 8,000 overall last season- ok cry lucky and not been going
so well. The WC allowed me catch up well in the last GW.
      It's a tactical battle..

Your re right thou. Whoever is picking their WCs this week or next will have similar teams.
Hope to get a 6th green arrow in a row this week.

Going to go with Taraabt n Ramirez over Michu n say Guthrie for a while n see how that goes..

I might just watch it tonight. I was in line at Whole Foods yesterday buying some feel-good hippy 'organic' food and glanced over the cover of a magazine (maybe Vanity Fair?) and saw her on the front page. Hadn't heard of her. It said something like 'a million men think Jennifer Lawrence is the most desirable woman on the earth.' So I thought I'd ask.

Alreet lads. To Tony the champ. On Marveaux. I think that he will play left forward and gouffran right forward, until Barfa comes back. That should be sometime in Feb. I would guess whichever of those is playing best will keep their place, with barfa on the other side. My money would be on marv , as he has been playing really well, and i don't know to much about Goufrann. Goufrann has been bought as a squad player (think replacement for leon best, rather than ba).

If we don't buy a proper ba replacement, I will be punting on marv as a 5th mid.
