Watchlist

The Watchlist – Ian Harte

When Reading clinched promotion to the Premier League last season, Ian Harte was immediately pencilled in by many Fantasy managers as a cut-price defensive option for the following campaign. With set-pieces and spot-kicks in his locker, the veteran’s four goals and eight assists from 32 appearances last time out were indicative of his potential for the Royals but Nicky Shorey’s return to the Madejski quickly scuppered the best-laid plans.

Despite starting the opening three Gameweeks of the season, Harte was shifted to the bench in favour of Shorey after back-to-back hammerings at the hands of Chelsea and Tottenham prompted Brian McDermott into a defensive re-think. As the season progressed, Shorey looked nailed-on and, handed a share of free-kicks and corners, afforded us the Reading budget option Harte was supposed to have been.

Come Gameweek 18, though, McDermott’s tinkering brought Harte back into the equation. Having shipped nine goals in their previous two home games, the Reading boss shifted from a 4-4-2 to a 4-4-1-1 and this time it was Shorey’s turn to slip out the picture – a narrow 1-0 loss at City was followed by back-to-back clean sheets at the Madejski as McDermott’s decision to tighten up paid off handsomely.

Back on set-pieces once again, Harte also supplied an assist against Spurs and has averaged four points per game since his return to first-team action – with his appeal also supplemented by a 3.8 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag, the left-back once again enters our thoughts ahead of a run of three crucial home games in the next four.

While the upcoming visit of Chelsea is likely to deter most, McDermott’s side then play host to Sunderland and Wigan in the following three in addition to a trip to Stoke. With three wins in their last four, including a couple of comeback triumphs against West Brom and Newcastle, Reading have suddenly found their form and shown a fighting spirit that has defied the many doubters who had already consigned them to next season’s Championship.

Now just a point from safety, these next few matches will be crucial to their hopes of survival and will be earmarked by McDermott as a definite source of points – the schedule is set to turn nasty around Gameweek 28, with trips to Everton, United and Arsenal highlighting the task at hand. Although Harte was omitted from Saturday’s 4-0 FA Cup win over Sheffield United – with Shorey returning to the side once again – like fellow Royals budget option, Alex Pearce, it’s thought that this was simply a cup rotation tactic in light of two league games within the next week.

Fantasy managers can sit back and watch for the teamsheet against Chelsea: should Harte be re-installed in the starting line-up for Wednesday’s clash, he could be primed to finally vindicate that collective show of faith he initially received last summer and looks a definite cut-price prospect for our backlines over the short-term, at the very least.

there are better options than Cisse e.g. Fletcher/Sturridge.

I don't like Gibbs, Demel and Hughes.
Gibbs is not very CS friendly, and Demel and Hughes haven't kept a CS in ages.

Although I do agree the league is boring, with Barca leading by 16 pts or so. But that's down to their brilliance. They would lead by 10 pts playing anywhere with the way they playing currently.

And that it is a two horse race in recent years, although it had more champions in the last 20 years or so compared to EPL

But you just can't take ignore Messi's ability. The way he moves, create chance and score goals is nothing I've seen in any league I watch.

Same goes to the players in the league. Although they're not Matas or Michus but there are quality there. Can probably succeed in EPL with half of the price they're currently paying for English players. 🙂

Don't mistake loyalty for being afraid of venturing into a different league. Messi isn't a mercenary, he feels like he owes the club something for believing in him. Not only a fantastic player, but very unlike most other footballers these days.

      A.Dempsey, Lukaku, Evans
      or
      B. Rooney, Britton, Santon
A for me. Both bench players are superior and RVP will be the points hog at United so while Dempsey is playing he looks the best bet

The 2nd one. I wouldn't have both Bertrand and Dzeko as you'll only have 13 players most weeks so just pick one of them. DDG over Mignolet as well (I know he's shite but United are more likely to keep clean sheets than Sunderland).

I'd go for A but get rid of mertesacker (not guaranteed starter) for a cheapie and you can probably get sfletcher or sturridge instead of lukaku. I like mertesacker but not a great fantasy player right now.

I only watched with blinking lids as it was all too early this morning over here. Missed the entire Chelsea match, but Ba came on with 10 to go and set up the equaliser, so seemingly nailed on for Reading. I think I might just keep mate.

Dempsey scored from Bales corner, and he played up front as far as I know.

Both Spurs and Liverpool were shockingly poor and I wouldn't want more than 1 from each team, regardless of whether today was just FA cup or not.

Ill prolly keep Bale for Norwich and Ba for Reading and then re-assess

Imagine fantasy La Liga! Ronaldo & Messi guaranteed at least 2 goals a week, it would be all about the bargain basements. Both would surely have at 90% ownership? (The other 10% too stubborn to put a Barca/Real player in their team)

well that's a Yahoo la liga game, and Messi cost something like 50m, there's no Subs for that game though.

they will cost more than 15m for sure. RVP cost 14m when he only score 1 goal per game (average), Messi score 2+ on average.

This potential DGW has right thrown a spanner in my WC works. How many players would you want for a DGW 26? Anymore than 4 would lead to problems fielding 11 players without a hit for GW27. Was going to go with Fellaini ahead of Michu but that may need a rethink...
