The sight of Daniel Sturridge clutching an ice pack to his thigh after 90 minutes against City offered some concern for those Fantasy managers banking on the new Anfield arrival for this week’s double fixture. Sturridge has been a hugely popular transfer target this week, despite the concern surrounding his chances of making Liverpool’s opening fixture against West Brom on Monday. Reason enough for me to make a return to the fold and examine the evidence on show surrounding the injury.

The initial concern stems from the striker limping slightly towards the end of the first half, after he’d scored the equalising goal, but having observed the match footage, Sturridge was not involved in any significant contacts nor were any excessive joint ranges evident.

The one point of note came immediately after he scored: as he strikes the ball with his left foot his body rotates excessively during the follow through and with the studs of his right foot planted firmly in the turf subsequently not allowing him to “spin on the balls of his foot” to accept the momentum, the rotary action of the force transfers to the knee and then to the hip joint.

For the next ten minutes Sturridge can be observed limping and periodically holding his upper thigh in the region of the Vastus Lateralis. (the quadriceps muscle on the outside of the thigh). However, during this period and indeed throughout the rest of the match this did not appear to affect his mobility or his agility as Sturridge can be witnessed twisting and turning, accelerating and decelerating and dribbling with pace. Movements that would highlight any significant injuries.

It is also worth noting that Sturridge is only just approaching full match fitness and as such his muscles are still adapting to the overload and some tightness in the quadriceps area, which is the biggest muscle of the leg and the prime moving agonist during the kicking motion, should be expected.

He would also have been assessed at half-time and cleared to play without an unreasonable risk of further injury, a further indication that the injury was mild and stable. The evidence leads me to believe that Sturridge suffered a mild grade 1 Quadriceps strain that, with treatment, should see the double Gameweek favourite back for Monday’s encounter.

  1. Usually, I'd be rushing to save that .1 but this GW rests on a delicate knife edge.

    The repurcussions should it go wrong doesn't bear thinking about.

    1. Migs, Rafa and Zaba > DDG, Azpi and Nasty

      No Bale scares me as ever.

      I predict good weeks for both of us

        • 3 years, 8 hours ago
    3. big possibility. DDG & RVP may let you down.

      • 3 years, 8 hours ago
    4. if you score 10 points or 200 points it will be totally irrelevant this week as everybody has got the same team..............

      • 3 years, 8 hours ago
      1. Interesting- but
        Suppose it holds through more for those who have just Wildcarded in the last couple of GWS tho.
        I'm going in to this GW with Sturridge, Johnson and Davies as my 3 DGWs..
        Plenty of differential ( and fingers crossed) there.. Don't think Sturridge nor Johnson will be overly popular capt choices. It's not like we are all on RvP again.
        The capt choice will make the key difference this week.

        • 3 years, 6 hours ago
  4. Azpil to Enrique or Cameron to Carragher?

    • 3 years, 8 hours ago
    1. JE for DGW fever.

  6. fellows, what are the points prediction for the Liverpool favourites? let me go first.

    Suarez = 10 - 12 points
    Gerrard = 13 - 15 points
    Sturridge = 13 - 15 points
    GJ = 8 - 10 points
    JE = 6 - 8 points.

    • 3 years, 8 hours ago
    1. Henderson - 22 points (c) 44!!!!!!!

      • 3 years, 8 hours ago
      1. you're more optimistic than BR.

        • 3 years, 8 hours ago
    2. Why Gerrard more than Suarez?

      • 3 years, 8 hours ago
      1. on deadly form, set pieces, cleanie(s).

        • 3 years, 8 hours ago
    3. Suarez 10
      Sturridge 12
      Stevie G 11
      Glenner 7
      Enrique 5

      I expect them to concede in both and Sturridge the only of those 5 to definitely play 90 mins in both games cos of Zenith games on 14th and 21st.

      • 3 years, 8 hours ago
      1. good point. is studge ineligible to play?

        • 3 years, 8 hours ago
        1. Yip, he's cup-tied. Apparently cos Chelsea are also in Europa now but that doesn't make sense to me?

          • 3 years, 8 hours ago
          1. he's cup-tied only if he has featured for Chelsea in the UCL. don't think so.

            • 3 years, 8 hours ago
            1. I read that on a Pool forum. No matter, he's cup tied. Not in the Liverpool squad in Europa FF.

              • 3 years, 8 hours ago
    4. suarez = 10- 18 pts
      gerrard = 7 - 12 pts
      sturridge =10 - 15pts
      johson = 6 - 10 pts
      enrique = 6 - 10 pts

  7. I think RVP is ready to EXPLODE three empty weeks in a row - no way jose!!!
    Bring on the Persie Steamroller.......might even captain the big fella - thise who have taken him out be afraid, be VERY afraid!!!

    • 3 years, 8 hours ago
    1. still Sturridge (c) for me.

      • 3 years, 8 hours ago
      1. Suarez for me!!!!

        • 3 years, 8 hours ago
    2. A 3rd no pointer... oh... oh...

      • 3 years, 8 hours ago
    3. An RVP hatrick would be special!

      • 3 years, 8 hours ago
    4. RVP is worst value for money even when he scores. He was value as reliable captain when others weren't consistent. Now totally useless.

      • 3 years, 7 hours ago
  8. Suarez hit 100%!on Fiso 10.8 tomorrow

    • 3 years, 8 hours ago
    1. OMG! I am so happy. Party all night? 😉

        • 3 years, 8 hours ago
  9. Anyone help me choose?

    A) With 3 DGWers already, doing Bale > Gerrard for a hit is mindless kneejerking, but I'm chasing in my mini-league and the 2 above me both have StevieG and Suarez..

    B) I'd get more differential if do Bale > Michu and I upgrade my sub goalie to Reina. With a non-nailed on bencher I'd be looking at -12pt in hits over the 2 weeks to field 11, but that's just -4pt more than (A)

    C) Stop fannying about and stick with Davies, Henderson and Sturridge for free

    • 3 years, 8 hours ago
    1. keep Bale. so C but i'd prefer Gerrard/Michu/Downing over Hendo anytime.

      • 3 years, 8 hours ago
      1. C- risky as you like but u ll be hailed a genius if it works and it can!

        • 3 years, 6 hours ago
  10. How is my team looking, chaps?> http://imgur.com/H3IPg8M

    • 3 years, 8 hours ago
    1. Rockin' I reckon

      • 3 years, 5 hours ago
  11. Yeah me too, but non-compatible with 'keep Bale'. I've resisted shipping Mata, RVP, etc for the same reasons. This means either 2 hits this week or one sub-7m transfer for -4pt.

    I could do Wilshere > Routledge, for example, but is there any point?

    • 3 years, 8 hours ago
    1. bah - reply fail..

      • 3 years, 8 hours ago
    2. nah, i won't ditch someone who's probably on form. so keep Wilshere too.

      • 3 years, 7 hours ago
  12. Captain for this gameweek? Gerrard or Suarez?

    • 3 years, 5 hours ago
      • 3 years, 5 hours ago

“All players will blank a few times during the season. When almost all do it in the same Gameweek, it is tough to take, but that's just the dark side of probability.”
