The Stock Check – Sunday

Two quick-fire goals from Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon catch the Gunners defence flat-footed and, with the Spurs back four holding firm, North London superiority is very much with Andre Villas-Boas’ side tonight. Here’s the Stock Check on Sunday’s events…

On the Up

Gareth Bale
It’s seven league goals in his last five league matches as Bale continued his incredible form and saw him repay those who placed the armband with the Welshman. There’s little to be said on Bale that hasn’t been said already – his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag has risen 0.6 in the space of two Gameweeks and there’s every reason to expect that to go on ascending as more Fantasy managers concede defeat and acquire his services.

Michael Dawson
Spurs have now gone 12 league outings unbeaten and, in that spell, they’ve kept five clean sheets and conceded more than one goal just once (at West Ham on Monday). The installation of Dawson in central defence has been a major factor – he’s started ten of the last eleven and was outstanding once again in a second half rearguard effort. At just 4.6 in the FPL, Dawson may not have appealing fixtures but, given Tottenham’s current form, he may still continue to deliver value.

Gylfi Sigurdsson
The Icelander scored his first league goal for Spurs at Upton Park on Monday and that was enough to see him start ahead of Lewis Holtby this afternoon. Sigurdsson again returned, slotting a smart pass through for Bale’s opener – his fifth assist of the season. It remains to be seen if he can hold his starting role, particularly once Clint Dempsey regains fitness. With Bale monopolising our attention, however, Sigurdsson seems unlikely to attract too much Fantasy interest.

Aaron Lennon
Lennon is another playing in the shadow of Gareth Bale. Today’s goal was his fourth of what has been a consistent season for the fleet-footed winger. At 7.2, ordinarily, Lennon may earn some Fantasy interest but with Bale’s form so relentless, he remains little more than a fanciful differential.

Going Down

The Arsenal Defence
While Tottenham’s rearguard has delivered five shut-outs in twelve and shown some determined consistency, Arsenal’s defence continues to look brittle and was exploited with ease by two through-balls today. It’s just two clean sheets in the last ten for Arsene Wenger’s back four – they came against Stoke and Sunderland – two teams amongst the most impotent in the league. Those holding Arsenal defensive assets will surely be looking to trade in for the Gameweek 29 blank and will consider the merits of acquiring them back, even with the confirmed double Gameweek 33 beckoning.

Olivier Giroud
It’s four league outings without a goal now for the Frenchman who, at one stage looked to have settled in Wenger’s lineup but now looks out of form and vulnerable once again. Giroud’s stint at centre-forward has led to Theo Walcott shifting to the flank and that has led to his returns dropping – Walcott has also failed to score in the last four Gameweeks, keeping his tally ticking with three assists. We could well see changes to Wenger’s tactics following the Gameweek 29 break.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Fuming about the own goal, they easily change assists and give easy assists, but a clear own goal that would effect massive amount of points and no change 🙁

            the ade bit is irrelevant as it was on target at that point. i'm a walcott owning bale captainer but still think it's a bit of a joke not awarding bale the own goal. very happy tho

          Not sure tbh. The bit that wasn't clear was Ade touch or not. By the rules if Ade touched it it is his OG and not Bales. Add the fact that Merts touch was heading roughly in the direction of the goal and there is, by the rules, nothing clear about it at all.

          It's one of the most unclear goals all season.

            there's at least 1 angle that was shown on tv that categorically showed it was no where near on target, anyone who's seen this angle will agree.

        Same deflection happens a yard further away from Mert's header, and its an OG.

        I can't see any good reason for it other than that. The lack of time between it hitting Mert and then Bale meant no one wants to make the call that the original header was going wide. Even though replays seemed pretty clear.

        So yeah, bit of a joke, but saved me 5 points, so woop woop and all that.

    I love this place, huge discussion on 2 of the 3 most owned mid field players. Such a big deal. Assist no assist, goal no goal, own goal no own goal, having in mind and the captain its a huge deal. I love this place when similar event happens.

    And everybody without Bale captain don't worry a little bit: Granny has him captain so surely Mark will do what ever it takes, the right call to be made 😉

      It is and I also agree it's an OG.
      But it won't get changed now.

      I assume Bale loses PPI for an OG??

      It would only bite him if the player has to play midweek and gets injured maybe.
      Maybe training as well.

    So mental note for next season. Always go for form over fixtures. In fact only consider fixtures for peripheral players or rotating defenders. Otherwise its form.

      It's both though of course. Fellaini was fixture, bale was form for example.

    If I choose Rooney instead of RVP after GW29 I could theoretically have this team:

    Federicci De Gea
    Evra Zabaletta Samba Dawson Davies
    Sissoko Bale Coutinho Yaya Fellaini
    Rooney Lambert Suarez

    Any thoughts on that? Strong or would I be better served going Mata/4.7 instead?

    Thanks for the responses above.

    This is what i'm considering

    This week: Fellaini & Zabaleta -> Sissoko & 5.5 defender (maybe Samba), 4 point hit

    Gwk 30: Cisse -> RVP/Rooney

      Its going to sort out a lot of teams.

      Reckon even with 2 FT I will have to probably take an 8 pt hit to put out 11 and even then 2 of them may not play (Cuellar and Taarabt. I think Tarbs will play as its at home but not sure Cuellar will).

    Quite happy in the end with bale 20 and Suarez 17, only 7 less than Suarez captainers with bale who got 44. Could have been worse the way Suarez played yesterday.

    I've sold Fellaini and not convinced it was the right decision. City next or not - he's had 2 double digit scores in his last 4 games.... he certainly has enough form to do damage, even though not (c) material.

    Regarding potential isn't Everton's DGW (GW 33) a doubt and could just become a normal GW due to their FA cup commitments? So it is better to transfer out Fellaini compared to Walcott or Mata. Am I right in thinking this?

    And so who to get in place of Fellaini? Sissoko or Nzogbia? I already have fletcher so giving Sess a miss.

    Fair play to Bale, it's not just about beating half a dozen players, running from the half way line and smashing the ball in the corner from outside the box he...

    * showed good movement to sneak between 2 defenders
    * showed great composure in a 1v1
    * finished very well.
