Gameweek 37-38: Midfield Differentials

First there was Michu’s hamstring injury against City on Saturday afternoon. Then Sir Alex Ferguson’s rotation kicked in on Sunday as United limped to a dire 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Chelsea. As we approach the finishing line, Fantasy managers are looking to freshen their lineups a little for that one last sprint – starting with the midfielders, we take a look at a handful of differentials who may be worth a gamble for those willing to throw the dice:

Philippe Coutinho
Coming in at just 6.7 in FPL and owned by less than 5%, the young Brazilian looks an enticing midfield option ahead of Liverpool’s final two fixtures. The Reds’ remaining schedule – a trip to Fulham and home clash with QPR – is regarded as the kindest of any side’s according to our season ticker and, with a goal or assist in four of his five away games, their January signing will be looking to pick up the points against a Cottagers side that have just shipped four at home to Reading. With a Gameweek 38 home showdown against relegated QPR, Coutinho’s security of starts and 4.6 points per game average is bound to acquire could make the difference in many a mini league.

Tomas Rosicky
Prior to Gameweek 31, the Czech midfielder had played a mere 53 minutes in the league all season but suddenly looks a pivotal member of Arsenal’s first XI. A calf complaint sidelined him for a couple of games in the middle of last month but Rosicky has now started each of the last five he has been available for, returning two goals, an assist and three bonus points, with the Gunners dropping just two points – against United – across those fixtures. Handed a role in “the hole” ahead of Jack Wilshere, he comes in at just 5.7 in FPL; far cheaper than Theo Walcott and Santi Cazorla in Wenger’s preferred attacking midfield three and with an ownership currently sitting at 0.2%, he looks the ultimate in differentials. Rosicky finishes the season against two of the bottom four – a home clash with Wigan and trip to Newcastle offers the chance of points as Wenger’s in-form side look to clinch a place in the top four once again.

Hatem Ben Arfa
Handed his first start since Gameweek 16 last weekend, the Frenchman picked up a couple of bonus points in Newcastle’s goalless draw with West Ham. Ben Arfa flourished in the role in “the hole” as a result of Moussa Sissoko’s injury absence and with Alan Pardew’s side fighting for their top-flight survival, looks set to retain his starting for the upcoming trip to QPR and home clash against Arsenal. Coming in at 7.3 in FPL, Ben Arfa has an ownership just over 4% and may well prove instrumental in steering the misfiring Magpies to safety.

Robert Snodgrass
With a goal and pair of assists in his last five appearances, the Norwich playmaker continues to accrue the Fantasy points. Snodgrass is head and shoulders above any team mate in the FPL standings this term on 133 points and with set-pieces boosting his appeal, he’s one to consider at just 6.2 with an ownership under 8%. This weekend sees Chris Hughton’s host West Brom in the Canaries’ final home match of the season before a trip to City – if Roberto Mancini’s side clinch second soon, the chances are he’ll roll out some of his squad players on the last day of the campaign, bolstering Norwich’s chances of survival.

Oscar
As a disappointing domestic season comes to a close, the young Brazilian is finally starting to produce for Chelsea. Firmly overshadowed by Juan Mata and Eden Hazard in the Blues midfield, Oscar has restricted his most impressive displays to the European stage but with two goals, an assist and three bonus points in his last four starts, he’s looked crucial to Rafa Benitez’s chances of stealing third spot from Arsenal and Tottenham. Oscar has now started five of the last six under Benitez and once tomorrow evening’s home clash with Spurs is out of the road, he then squares up to Villa and Everton in the last two league games of the season. Although the Europa League final showdown with Benfica is sandwiched in between these two fixtures, there’s a four day gap on either side, suggesting Benitez’s key players will have enough time to recuperate. Coming in at 7.8 in FPL and owned by only 1.2%, Oscar will be hoping to maintain his momentum over the final two fixtures.

Shinji Kagawa
Having been rested for the last couple of matches, the former Dortmund man looks a decent shout to return to the first XI for the final two fixtures. United entertain Swansea at Old Trafford this weekend and Sir Alex Ferguson will be desperate to bounce back from Sunday’s home defeat at the hands of Chelsea before his side make their way to West Brom in Gameweek 38. With three goals and two assists in his last five starts for the champions, Kagawa has explosive potential and at 7.9 in FPL, with an ownership under 5%, will be looking to lay down a statement of intent ahead of next season.

Shaun Maloney
Prior to this evening’s vital home encounter with Swansea, the Wigan midfielder has already highlighted his worth in recent weeks. Maloney has produced a goal and three assists over his last five fixtures, with his creativity proving crucial in the weekend win at West Brom. A victory over Michael Laudrup’s side this evening would lift the Latics out the drop zone on goal difference and while many of their relegation rivals start to capitulate, Wigan’s experience of battling the drop stands them in good stead. At just 5.4 in FPL, Maloney’s role on the left of the front three and share of set-pieces looks outstanding value right now – given their annual heroics, a trip to Arsenal could yet prove fruitful, while a final Gameweek 38 showdown with Villa at the DW could hand Maloney the platform to pull the strings and steer his side to safety yet again.

Adam Johnson
With injury or suspension depriving Sunderland of Steven Fletcher, Stephane Sessegnon and Craig Gardner for the last couple of matches, the former City winger looks more crucial than ever. Handed a role in “the hole” behind the misfiring Danny Graham in last night’s home draw with Stoke, Johnson’s more advanced central berth looks set to bolster his chances of picking up the points over the final two Gameweeks as Paolo Di Canio desperately tries to steer his side to safety. A home game with fellow strugglers Southampton this weekend looks particularly crucial before the Black Cats make their way to Tottenham in Gameweek 38. Priced at 6.8 in FPL and with an ownership under 4%, Johnson’s contribution could well prevent his side from dropping into the Championship.

I can't stand the attitude that people who support big successful teams have about lower teams...they don't know what it's like for your heart to literally bleed with pain when your team gets relegated or to be in tears when you lose a playoff final or to be involved in a relegation dogfight and be on your knees praying that you score a goal to save you from the drop.

It's just not the same if you support the likes of man utd/arsenal/chelsea...who have never had to deal with the agony and heartbreak that comes with these constant battles. Can't stand the constant disdain from glory supporters!! You don't know how good you have it!

yeah, that's obviously agonising...but relegation for instance is like staring down a black hole...a complete abyss...you have no idea what the future holds and it's just plain misery. Whereas losing a UCL final, it's disappointing but the loser doesn't face anything more than the agony of defeat...beyond that their team is likely to bounce back and compete in the UCL again next year. Certainly if you are a team that's able to get to the UCL final you're probably pretty damn good and have a lot of money to spend.

fair enough Adam, but it's not me trying to say that if you support a big club that you are somehow unworthy...it's just that it's often the people who support these big clubs that mock people for supporting anyone who isn't successful as if these clubs are irrelevant.

You don't ever hear people who support the likes of man utd get questioned about why they support man utd. But when someone says they support Sunderland everyone goes, WTF ARE YOU DOING!?!? as if it's wrong/weird to support an unsuccessful team.

I was an avid Man U fan from the early 80's but i must say, i don't really care whether they win or lose anymore. Im Irish. I started to wane around the time Ronaldo began to become the main man, and i must say, his arrogance, petulance and general demeanour sort of put me off the team at that time....................

I haven't really gone back to them since. Perhaps, subconsiously, it was Fantasy Foolball that put the final nail in the coffin of me stopping supporting them.................

I agree to an extent but lets not tar all fans of certain clubs with the same brush.

I'd say it's just as bad when there's an inverted snobbery whereby supporting a 'lesser' club is perceived to make you a 'genuine fan' and all fans of bigger clubs are somehow ignorant, complacent fools.

      It cuts both ways...

Agreed. As a QPR fan I have never experienced the numbing, relentless sense of failure that came with this season. We sold our soul, and still barely won a game. Relentless grinding failure upon failure for months except for a brief glimmer of hope when we won two on the trot, only for Taraabt to miss a penalty against norwich. Don't talking to me about losing a champion's league final: I dream of being in a final, any final.

MUN under-performed and still beat the rest.

If any of the other teams had done any better, they could have won it.

We scored more goals from midfield last season but this year we've been cruising in 3rd Gear cuz City have been so poor and there have been no other challenges. RvP has been in the spot light rightly so but spare a thought for Rooney who has been playing in midfield or benched for half the season.

Here's the question, which defender from Wigan or Man City is most likely to play all four remaining games (includes the FA cup)? I am playing this "silly" five teams.. game from a newspaper and have one move to replace Rafael.

Boyce or Kompany or Zab or someone else? Maybe three by Zab is better than four by Boyce. thanks

Yes, I will check lineups tonight (I am in the States) and probably go with Zab if he plays... that's two good games and possibly a third. I think Boyce will play all four or he is on the way to the Championship.

if zab starts tonight, definitely him. If you're after points from them in a similar way to in fpl then surely kompany/clichy would be better picks than a wigan defender?

Shucks, well on Friday I think as the lineups clarify, you will need to take a hit. Wilson played 45 min... you just have too many doubts (like many of us) to field 11, which is the first rule of when to take a hit, especially for a mid or striker. But wait until Friday.

So what do the remaining 3 matches this GW mean, and will they actually be bothered to play for us at the arse end of a dying season?

    Pos--Team---------Pld-----Pts
    1------Man Utd------36------85
    2------MAN CITY---35------72
    3------CHELSEA---35------68
    4------Arsenal-------36------67
    5------SPURS-------35------65
    ...
    7------Liverpool------36------55
    8------BROM---------35------48
    9------SWANSEA--35------43
    10----West Ham---36------43
    ...
    15------Sunderland-36------38
    16------Norwich-----36-------38
    17------Newcastle-36-------38
    18------WIGAN-----35-------35

    MCI v WBA
City drawing a blank at Swansea hasn't worked out so bad in that it might force them to make a bit more effort for WBA who have nothing to play for anymore. Still they only need three points from three games to be sure of getting third and two points to be sure of getting a CL spot, plus they have the FA Cup final in four days' time. And the remaining two games are (rdg, NOR). So it seems depressingly possible that they'll rotate and play below their best tonight. Unless second spot really means something to them, but judging by how motivated they were to win the title, I'm not holding my breath. Just don't bench Tevez, Mancini, you soul destroying clown.

    WIG v SWA
Swansea need just a point from three games to guarantee survival (their goal difference is far better than any of the relegation candidates). Must win game for Wigan and they'll also be looking at their goal difference which is the same as Norwich, one better than Newcastle but 10 and 11 worse than Sunderland and Southampton. Should be busting a gut, particularly as they play Arsenal next after the FA Cup final and this game is definitely the more winnable of the two (or three if you include the final).

    CHE v TOT
Clearly a huge game. Chelsea need two wins from their three remaining games to guarantee CL football (Arsenal's goal difference is too close to be safe if points were level). The next two are tricky as they're visiting a fired-up Villa and hosting Everton, with the Europa League final sandwiched between them. Spurs need three wins to be absolutely sure (again Arsenal's goal difference is far superior to theirs). Surely going to be nothing less than total commitment - hopefully just like Chelsea's 4-2 win at White Hart Lane in the reverse fixture?

Thought he was being prudent by running a football club on the cheap - but got undone by the simple fact that no world class player wants to stay at a club that does that. I think he's a romantic, but he's too stubborn to face reality, and that's a fatal flaw.

Put it this way if we could get Klopp I'd bite his hand off.

Nope - only guarantees them 3rd I think.

If City get 3 points, they'll be on 75 points.

If Chelsea win their remaining three games, the 9 points take them to 77 points, in 2nd place ahead of City.

Arsenal can only get a maximum of 73 points now so they'd be in 4th behind City.

    Options for this week:

    A) Michu -> Mata and bench RVP next week (very much doubt he'll start) or Fellaini

    B) RVP -> Benteke and bench Michu, before getting rid next week

The rest of my front 8:
    Bale/Walcott/Fellaini/Maloney
    Tevez/Lukaku

    Thoughts much appreciated.

I don't understand where this RVP not starting thing comes from....It's the last home game of the season with a trophy presentation...I can't possibly see that he'll bench him. I know SAF has said he's going to rotate but that's not the same as saying RVP won't play.

Aye I can see....RVP has been their best player and talisman this season...it would be an insult to the fans for him to fester on the bench on trophy day...More chance of a brace than a bench imo.....

conversely, i'm sure they would re-write the rules to allow barry ferguson to get 6 bonus if he managed the same feat. and "ant barry" would probably get .3 microbaps too.

How did Fellaini play on sunday? Is he worth bringing in or should I go for the likes of Ben Arfa & those mentioned in this article?

Didn't look threatening at all tbh, even though he played pretty high up the pitch...

He played well but wasn't given the freedom to play in an advanced role. He will be more attacking minded at the weekend but I think there are better options IMO

did nothing but just put a shot wide which would have got him 11 points

Thanks lads, might just go for differentials in a last minute surge for a top 1k finish (very unlikely)

not really, gomez has been getting less and less minutes every match lately, and last match he went off with Wigan losing and they went on to win without him. plus beausejour and gomez play completely different positions
