Scout Notes

The Stock Check – Sunday

A devastating hat-trick from Daniel Sturridge does the damage in the mini-leagues as Robin Van Persie lives off scraps and Gareth Bale blanks. With Michu cruelly notching at Old Trafford, this was a day of frustration for many. Here’s the Stock Check on Sunday’s seven matches…

On the Up

Daniel Sturridge
A stunning hat-trick took Sturridge to five goals since Luis Suarez picked up his 10-match ban, offering little doubt that the former Chelsea striker can fire Liverpool to victories, with or without the Uruguayan. Available for just 7.1 going into the Gameweek, Sturridge was a shoo-in for the Scout Picks this week and those who acquired his services reaped handsome rewards in a Gameweek where the heavy-hitters have, so far, stuttered. They can also look to the final day Anfield clash with QPR with huge optimism. Sturridge will undoubtedly be the hot property going into Gameweek 38 and into next season.

Philippe Coutinho
When Liverpool notch goals, there’s every chance that the mercurial Brazilian will play some part. Inevitably, Coutinho profited from Sturridge finishing, earning another brace of assists to take him to seven for the season, with four in his last three league starts.

Robert Snodgrass
While Coutinho has been central to Liverpool’s attacking ploys of late, Snodgrass has been vital to Norwich all season. With a four-nil thrashing of West Brom confirming the Canaries’ top flight status, it was no surprise to see Snodgrass factoring among the points. The former Leeds playmaker notched his sixth goal of the season and his eighth assist. Snodgrass has returned two goals and three assists in his last six league starts to reward those who sat tight through a difficult spell for Chris Hughton’s men.

Kevin Mirallas
When fit, the Belgian has been a consistent bright spark for Everton and, despite failing to return in his last five, earned a recall to the Scout Picks bench to repay our faith with a brace. His classification as a forward, whilst being utilised out wide by David Moyes, has somewhat hampered his popularity but Mirallas will be of interest next season, particularly if he is granted a more central attacking role under the new regime.

The Everton Defence
An incredible run of form has now seen the Toffees rearguard fetch seven clean sheets in their last nine league fixtures. Leighton Baines and his colleagues at the back have conceded just a single goal in the last six – made all the more extraordinary by the fact that, at the turn of they year, they’d kept just two shut-outs.

Emmanuel Adebayor
Having sparkled in the 2-2 draw at Chelsea, the Togo international cemented his start in the Spurs lineup for the testing trip to the Britannia and earned recognition in this week’s Differentials. Adebayor delivered again, notching a priceless winner to keep Tottenham’s Champions League ambitions on track. That’s three goals and two assists in his last five league starts. With a home clash with Sunderland to come, Adebayor’s form may yet roll on.

Clint Dempsey
A lost Fantasy asset after his transfer from Craven Cottage, the former Fantasy big fish has spent the season overshadowed by the brilliance of Gareth Bale. Today’s opening strike in the win at Stoke was Dempsey’s seventh goal of a frustrating term for the US international, having struggled to cement a regular starting role under Andre Villas-Boas. Two double figure hauls in his last four starts demonstrate his potential and rewarded those who took a punt on his differential status.

Hatem Ben Arfa
The headline act in this week’s Differentials, the Frenchman assumed spot-kick duties at Loftus Road, stroking home the penalty to level matters after Loic Remy’s opener. Sacrificed following Rob Elliot’s dismissal, Ben Arfa will surely earn another run-out when the Magpies host Arsenal on the final day, with their Premier League status now secured.

Michu
Having been written off for the remainder of the season by his manager, the Spaniard made a rapid recovery from a hamstring problem to start at Old Trafford and notch a eighteenth league goal of a hugely successful season. A frustrating blow to the thousands of Fantasy managers who sold him on off the back of Michael Laudrup’s early prognosis.

Going Down

Gareth Bale
While it’s harsh to knock a player who has been simply outstanding all season, today’s failure to get amongst the points in Tottenham’s Britannia victory will have come as a major blow to those who handed him the armband. His consistency has been so great of late, we have come to count on regular rewards from the Welshman. His failings were at least cushioned by Robin Van Persie’s failure to score in the win over Swansea, although the Dutchman’s two assists will still sting. Those who backed Sturridge or Frank Lampard with the armband, meanwhile, will have made up huge ground.

Marouane Fellaini
Strongly backed going into the Gameweek with what looked a tempting home fixture with West Ham, the Belgian again failed to return. Fellaini was largely utilised deep today by David Moyes, helping to counter the threat posed by Andy Carroll. He has now failed to return in his last six league starts.

Mark Bunn
The budget Canaries stopper finally made way as John Ruddy returned to the starting lineup against the Baggies. Having kept a clean sheet, Ruddy announced his return in some style, surely consigning Bunn to the bench for the final league fixture.

Rob Elliot
The Newcastle stopper is another budget option lost to us for the final day. Elliot saw him marching orders for two bookable offences and, with Tim Krul sidelined, it will be Steve Harper between the posts to face the Gunners at St James’ Park.

Jose Enrique
The Spaniard dropped to the bench as Brendan Rodgers resurrected his 3-5-2 experiment at the Cottage. While Enrique’s owners will take consolation from the fact that Dimitar Berbatov spoiled the Liverpool clean sheet, they will be concerned on Enrique’s start for the Anfield clash with QPR.

Invested about 70 pounds (that I made a week ago from my intial 30 pounds deposit) and so far I'm on 413 pounds profits this week and Walcott still to play...
Ade, Sturridge, A Johnson, barfa, Martin, Baines - all worked out... Feel very lucky and really like this format (obviously....)

Sorry to do this, but I had the amazing skill to place this on the 30th post on the last page. 🙂

The SportsGuy has raised a favourite issue of mine: the question of how much of this game is skill and how much luck.

First, I am a bad champion for the skill camp, as this is my first season with FFS and I’ve had a great (read: lucky) season. But intellectually I can’t handle the popular impulse on this site to claim high rank is mostly down to luck. It’s one thing to say that a lot of the people in the top 1,000 (or whatever rank you want to focus on) are lucky to be there. I agree with that. It’s quite another thing to suggest that anyone who gets there must have been, say, 50% or 70% lucky. Evs, for example, has done enough to persuade me that his frequent appearances a the top of the rankings are not luck (go win this thing Evs! 🙂 ). And even when I look at my own experience I can say that most of my red arrows have been my fault, and I got most of my greens by good decisions (to be clear: I just dropped out of the top 1,000, and I deserved to by my own bad decisions).

My point: luck surely plays a big part in any given gameweek, and probably in a season, but we all work hard to make good decisions and it’s silly to claim that when they go wrong, or when another player’s decisions go right, it’s down to luck.

Speaking for myself I feel inclined to blame luck when things go wrong and claim credit when my decisions work out. Don’t we all do that? Professional golfers are all trying to put the ball in the hole. When they chip a ball out of the bunker into the hole it looks lucky, but that’s exactly what they’re trying to do. The best players can do it 1 time out of 10, while others can only do it 1 time out of 20. The fact that they miss a lot does not make it luck: the better players make it more times than the lesser players. Same is true with (c) choices and transfers. One top-1000 season might be luck (but isn’t necessarily, it could be skill) but 2 or 3 top-1000 seasons out of 6 is definitely skill.

      answer repost;

i don’t agree at all with the golf analogy, as in you’re dealing with stuff totally out of your control at times with FF, other than that, nice post. i think luck probably accounts for maybe 25%, impossible to quantify of course.

and someone said in previous answers they don't believe in luck?, then my friend, i think you don't understand the concept, or at least have an entirely different interpretation than i have

        Reply repost:

I expected this challenge. We are not, you’re right, in control of kicking the ball into the net. But that is not the game we are playing. Our job is to cast a net to catch points that are LIKELY to be scored by other people who kick balls in nets. Of that we are in total control. So on a given gameweek there are a lot of random things that can happen that I don’t control, but over time I (or you) am measured by how good my net is. We control that completely. The control is not physical like with the golfers, but we can make corrections from attempt to attempt just like them, and we must face uncontrollable elements just like them (eg, wind, rough turf, etc). They control what they can and hope the rest works out. So do we.

yeah, you make a very good argument, hats off. i just think that numerous thing happen in FF, that completely defy all conventional wisdom, or like when a player has the flu or whatever. golfers, for example don't have things like this to deal with. if we wanted to get mathematical about it, there are just way more probabilities going on with FF, and a degree of chaos, and hence for me, a decent slice of blind luck.

This is far too long. I read the last paragraph. Luck is a huge part of this game and a huge part of anything. Taking out a player for one week, and if he scores the next week in a hard enough fixture it is pretty god damn unlucky. However, In association with your golf reference. Gary Player one said - "The more i practise, the luckier I seem to get."

I should'nt of used the word huge, but it makes up a percentage . The quote was backing up his golf analogy. Also, the more I read peoples posts and the more I do FPL, the more understanding I seem to get. Therefore making less mistakes and irrational moves. But somethings go against the run of play and are fair to be deemed "unlucky". There is more un-luck than luck in this game i think...if that makes sense.

Good post. Its mainly skill but luck can certainly make the difference between top 1k and 5k.

You can however, end up with a great rank through sheer jamminess. To give an example, a guy in my mini league came just outside the top 1k last season despite making loads of transfers (around 60-70 I think). There were some terrible decisions where he ended up being ridiculously lucky, like transferring in Upson who was only going to play 1 game due to a suspension to Shawcross/Huth and getting a goal and CS that week, or captaining someone dodgy like Defoe and ending up with a haul as RVP(vc) came into play. This season he has played the same way and is 265k.

Totally agree. Individuals can get lucky and have undeserved high ranks. That is completely different from claiming that all people who have high ranks have them because of luck. Again, I might just have been lucky this season (I don't think so, but I might), but that doesn't mean that all people who have a similar rank were lucky to be there,

Yeah, those that consistently do well are clearly up there due to skill though even then luck may have made the difference between a rank of 1k and a rank of 4th 😉

As I said here is my theory:

      To viper from last page:

Being inside the 20k is 90% skill 10% luck

Being inside the 10k is 75% skill 25% luck

Being inside the 1k is 50% skill 50% luck

Top 100 is more than 50 percent luck.

Which means: a guy like evs will finish top 20k nine out of ten times,
      Top 10k 7 or 8 out of 10
And top 1k every second season.

Assuming he almost maxes out the skil factor.

It's like poker - the best player can only play the odds and over a long season he will do well, but how well? That's the luck factor above.

2 of top 2 (I think) got theo (c) so despite having him I need a blank.

Tevez points haul & cleanie for Hart and Sagna my ideal - but that really is pushing it to the limit.

If all play I have 4 others have 2/3 some with captain. Tight, even below me... Couldn't second guess, I just need a Theo nil return.

You just need to go into GW38 still in contention, then anything can happen. My advice is not to gamble even if you need to make up, say, 10 points. I made that mistake last year when I could have done better by just doing the obvious thing.

I am hoping Panti and Kolorov play with Arsenal conceding (rival team)

Also hope Tevez isn't in squad so I get Michu off my bench.

Depends on Hart and Tevez starting IMO, Clichy looks unlikely to get a game.
