Scout Reports

Scout Report – Derek Boateng

Fulham have been one of the busiest clubs this summer, with three new members of the first-team squad already acquired. Having bolstered his backline with the arrival Fernando Amorebieta and Maarten Stekelenburg, Martin Jol has also increased his options in central midfield by snapping up Derek Boateng from Ukrainian outfit Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk.

The tough-tackling 30-year-old makes his way to Craven Cottage on a one-year contract with the option of a further year and will brings plenty of top-level experience to the Fulham midfield. A long-term target of Jol’s, Boateng spoke of his delight at clinching the deal late last month:

“I’m very happy that I have signed and I want to thank the Chairman, the Manager and the Board at Fulham Football Club. I’ve been working hard to come here and I’ll do my best for the Club. It’s been a long road for me but now I’m here I’m so happy and I can’t wait to start and give everything I have.”

The History

The Ghana international has plenty of experience across a number of leagues in Europe. Starting his career as a 16-year-old with Greek side Kalamata FC, Boateng scored nine times in 27 appearances and was subsequently picked up Panathinaikos in 2001. There, he notched three times in 24 league games but was farmed out on loan to OFI Crete the following year, scoring once in 12 matches.

Boateng was then transferred to Swedish side AIK in 2003, scoring five goals over three seasons, before continuing on his travels yet again – this time moving to Beitar Jerusalem in Israel. There, he lasted another couple of years, helping his side win the league for the first time in 10 seasons and scoring eight times in 72 appearances, before moving to Germany with FC Cologne.

Having failed to nail down a starting berth, the nomadic Boateng then switched to Spain to star for Getafe for two seasons – he grabbed two goals and a pair of assists over 72 league games, though his penchant for incurring the referee’s wrath is reflected in 20 yellow cards over his time in La Liga. Picked up by Dnipro 2011, he scored twice in 23 league games before Jol came calling last month. Boateng has also featured 46 times for his national side and found the net once.

The Prospects

Given the number of midfield departures already this summer, Boateng looks likely to be a first-team regular for Fulham next time round. Jol has so far released Chris Baird, Giorgos Karagounis, Simon Davies and Mahamadou Diarra, while loan signing Emmanuel Frimpong and Urby Emanuelson have returned to their parent clubs. Given that Steve Sidwell hardly covered himself in glory with back to back suspensions which forced him out of seven of the last eight league matches in 2012/13, a central midfield overhaul looks on the cards.

In all likelihood, Boateng’s more defensive-midfield role and previous scoring record won’t be winning many suitors in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, despite the fact he’s expected to come in around the 5.0 mark. As Jol looks for a more creative presence alongside the Ghanaian, Sidwell’s starting berth looks under threat and while Bryan Ruiz was occasionally moved to a more withdrawn role last term, Jol is likely to return to the market again and allow the Costa Rican to continue behind Dimitar Berbatov in a 4-4-1-1.

Depending on price, Boateng could, however, prove a decent value shout in the Sky Sports game. The bonus aspect, which rewards passing and tackling, could bolster his appeal, with the Ghanaian tasked with sitting in front of the back-four as Jol looks for a little more resilience in the centre of the park. Plenty of starts looks assured, then, but from an FPL perspective, he’d need to surpass his previous exploits to force himself onto our Fantasy radars.

Can I crack all these theories about high finishes They mean nothing 😛

I was 128 in the world GW1 and finished just shy of 45k at the end of the season. I took hits here and there and due to rotten luck of selling RVP or captaining the wrong player it all just went downhill. In the end it all comes down to a combination of stats, intuition and luck.

We can use stats to examine players who are playing slightly further up the field or who are getting in threatening areas such as Baines/Rafael/GJ which are good INDICATORS but not guarantees about who to get in. Stats such as shots off target all contribute to who we might (c) considering it effects PPI and can be the difference between an extra 2/3 bonus points.

Our intuition plays a big part of how well we do, which I guess ultimately comes down to luck also. We might have a "Feeling" about a certain player and it may well pay off. Whether its a "Doosra differential" or WR's commitment to Aguero, these decisions also account for our rank at the end of the season.

LUCK - remember, we cannot predict who is going to score/assist get a clean sheet. If we did we'd all put money on it. The game is mainly luck aided by an educated decision based on either stats or intuition. Sometimes it pays off sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it helps to follow the crowd, sometimes collapsing bandwagons are avoided. At least we can discuss our decisions and try come to some sort of consensus about making our decisions through feedback from the community.

PS. Good luck with the new season 🙂

There's a lot of luck. Got to learn to accept the helpless random stuff that happens. I've got into the habit of betting every GW and it does help make fantasy decisions because you see things much more in terms of probabilities.

Likewise. Even I consult the bookies odds for most likely scorer in order to settle my decision on who to (c), but even at that it's still no guarantee

Taking note of how the top 10 starting teams the general consensus was:

    2 cheap rotating keepers (4.5)

    2 expensive defenders (6.0-6.5)

    1 mid price defender (4.5-6.0)

    2 basement price defenders (4.0)

    2 big midfielders (9.0-10.0)

    2 mid-price midfielders (6.5-8.0)

    1 basement price midfielder (4.5-5.0)

    1 big striker (>10.0)

    1 mid price striker (8.0-10.0)

    1 basement price striker (5.0-6.5)

Essentially the general idea was that key word 'balance' and not so much of the 'cheap defence' and 'big midfielders and strikers'. A tactic many seem to adopt

this season was wierd in that the cheap defences early on were offering better consistency than the expensive ones, however moving forward i expect the top teams to sure up at the back and the case of paying for premium defenders to be more about clean sheets and less about attacking returns

Honestly despite the longer pages now offered by home crowd, the change of pages still kills the flow of convo and almost causes you to disregard what has gone before and start again.

Considering we now have pages 50 topics long cant help but feel that the bottom 5 of the previous page should be reproduced at the top of the next so as to accommodate the flow of discussion better.

Can't help but feel it would have been likelier if Fergie were still there because of their personal relationship. United are a little short on the left on paper, I guess Welbeck and Nani (off?) were used there but it wasn't their natural position either.

Simpson looking for a new club as is Bardsley, also C Cole might be going to WBA so could be good bench fodder. Coutinho, Zaha, Navas, Mata, Bale are obvious mid options, could do with new forwards in the prem. Can't wait for all the RMT!

Think the same thing happens every year, the old favourites become more expensive and you're forced to search for new ones. That's your chance of course to climb the rankings, otherwise everyone would be in the same boat.

FPL seemed to reduce the spread in player prices this season, especially midfielders and defenders. This worked pretty well I think it - it meant you had more options for each position.

I think we've been pretty good with BR (without DC & KD) in fairness. We'd make a nice profit on Coutinho & Sturridge if we sold them now and the new lad and the other targets look like good buys. I stress look. Our policy now seems to be buy potential. But that's all it is, potenetial. Lets not forget that Zaha cost Utd a few £ more than Cazorla and looks to have Nani X Young levels of fustration.

I would like to think so, but just under 30m for Borini and Allen is absurd, they have some potential but surely we could have invested better.

i have a bad feeling players like Coutinho and Sturridge will rise a lot. They shouldn't though. They should start on the price they ended in the previous season they were involved in (to the nearest 0.5)

      why so much Zaha love?

did you not see the article about him? his stats are hardly encouraging and that's nailed on, in the championship, and with more games played. now he'll be in a harder league and not nailed on. I probably won't touch him unless he's 4.5 or maybe 5.0 and even then not sure i'd want to use up one of my united slots on him. and even if he does go on loan I still wouldn't be too interested

Probably the most off topic thing I could possibly post but it was on my mind so.....

It annoys me that odds are that I'll grow up and live out a life that will go unnoticed by most people apart from the ones who are important to me ( ie. I won't be remembered). If there is one thing in life I want to do, it is to make a difference in this world. And you know what? That is what has driven me so far in the early stages of my life and it is the reason that I am determined to be REMEMBERED (positively of course). I know you'll all think I'm just another wannabe but I'll prove you wrong. 😉

Anyway, I just wanted to get it off my mind. Cue the down votes, but tbh I don't really care. I feel better now. 😛

      Here's a thought

you can do a huge difference in the world, keep a low profile, and be remembered by some

or you can make a silly youtube dance or a sextape and be remembered by lots

fame and making a difference is not proportionally linked

        Never safe, never safe.

What a long tiring day. Still considerable rep anxiety about, when I really wish it would all go away. Personally I wouldn't mind if comment ratings and rep were invisible (not sure if that would work but hey). Really find discussing it a bit cringeworthy and have tried to ignore it. I'd happily be a level 1 poster for ever, helping and learning should be its own reward.

If anything I'm a little discouraged from posting research in future as I used to in the past, because of the suspicion. Probably gonna have to wait til it all dies down before I resume my old brain dumps of rotations, Fellaini's positioning, tactical crap etc. All been tarred with the same brush.

Ironically, a massive +1 to you on this post 😉

Although the long, overly analytic posts are "beneficial" from what I can gather, it's a bit like analysis for the sake of analysis, especially at this stage of the game, where the game hasn't even launched yet. People seem to be drawing out simple points into overly long discussions that I'm really just too lazy to properly investigate, and looking for that oh so precious upvote and "great post" response, when in actuality they're saying very little with the post. For this stage of the season, I dunno, I'd prefer for everyone to just chill and have some banter without feeling obliged to make long winded, cringeworthy posts.

Or maybe I'm just a cynical bastard, I'm sure all the stuff will even out when the novelty of seeing green wears off and we can have some proper discussion and get back to posting some rubbish too 😀

Supreme pick, going to be interesting to see where you stick him in which formation, I guess CAM in a 4-2-3-1 is the most obvious option but wonder if you'd want to use him to dominate midfield slightly deeper and free up a forward spot.

I think your reply reads quite reasonably. Seems like Orpheus has provided more specific tactics; he's given more meat for you to work with and they sound plausible enough. It may be a weakness of fluid tactics as employed by AB that by their very nature they are not very specific and so difficult to reward.

Well it depends on whether fluid tactics work.

I suppose my biggest issue with Zidane is that I don't have a lone striker ahead of him.

Personally I don't think either have provided enough specific tactics. For some, simple is enough and yet effective. It's probably just the little things that really matter to me, maybe I just love picking on little details. I'm also a very, very big fan of tactics.

Basically for me, some tactics work and some don't. If you wanna pull off a tactic, I"m not gonna let someone off with a quality pick just because they did heaps for their club.

There is some truth in lack of instruction in fluid tactics, because covering each "possible position combination" in great length can only get you so far... There's also Messi's dribbling ability that AB never touched on, shooting from distance etc. that so many players have.

Think the quality of players here have really overshadowed the fact that their strengths are usually ignored, and that's the real weakness of a draft with a huge pool of quality players. Lack of utilisation.

And also perhaps a lack of weaknesses to exploit in said quality players, although maybe that becomes the challenge - spotting the chinks in their armour.

I do find it quite difficult to visualize some of the tactics with text alone, especially when they involve multiple players and multiple movements. Some way of easily visualizing them would be great but that's probably a whole different project.

I think your general approach of looking at overloads (taking into account the quality of players in the duel) is a good one.

I see. Well overloads/numerical advantages are a very easy way to identify possible advantages, but it really comes down to the formations people put up. In this case it's quite easy to define because the "individual" battles are relatively simple.

Visualising tactics is really, really hard imo. Think it's why tactics isn't really emphasised on in most drafts, and obviously formation setup helps people visualise these battles.

After all, I think I'd be the one that loves going OTT for the tactics bit, highly doubt you'll see posts like mine in this draft.

Me too, I'm a bit of a Zonal Marking addict. My interest is in space (hence most interested in formations) and admittedly I neglect many very effective tactics such as set pieces, aerial battles, etc. Usually when I analyze a game I work from the two formations superimposed onto each other as in the actual game, maybe including that in the vote submission might help.

I'm interested by anything that creates space (attacking) or denies space (defending). Dragging players out of position, false nines, high lines, pressing, all interesting to me.

Yea I've been following ZM actively for a while too, I'm a very, very big fan of how he uses stats and stuff to highlight how specific tactics are shown in matches.

I've actually attempted to start a blog like his, but due to my full time job it's virtually impossible 😛

But yea what's interesting to you is definitely a grey area that people neglect. Hopefully we can learn more about this as the season goes, I'll be using tactical knowledge to approach FPL a bit more compared to last season

Definitely. Instead of playing safe and boring (and probably saner), I'm actually using FPL as a bit of a training exercise for me tactically, deliberately playing a high hits strategy with GW-by-GW transfers based on the matchups. Big potential profits... and losses!

Nice extended video from one match featuring one of my favourite players, Keisuke Honda. Certainly hoping Wenger wakes up and makes a bid for him - can see him as a worthy replacement for either Arteta or Rosicky, as he's comfortable playing both deep and advanced.

                  Oh OHHHHH

Hard to say. I think it comes down to who Arsenal wanna let go actually.

I'm still waiting for their "marquee signing", the player who will grab all the headlines for Arsenal and score all the goals. I don't expect Walcott to get the same returns as last season, but I do expect Giroud to step up.

Just that for a title challenging team , Arsenal will need a world class goalscorer and now is the time to spend for it, while United, City and Chelsea are in transition.

Does signing a marquee striker have a positive or a negative impact on the team's premier midfielders?

We all expect the likes of Walcott & Cazorla for Arsenal, and Mata & Hazard for Chelsea to be priced around the 10 mark in FPL this season. Now, neither club had a striker last season who would score 60% of the team's goals.

If things happen as the rumors suggest, and Arsenal and Chelsea sign Higuain and Cavani respectively, does that diminish the value of the midfielders? Yeah, assist potential increases, I suppose, but will they score 10+ goals in the PL next season as well?

Another thing worth considering is whether we want to double up on any attack (unless there is a DGW). Would you buy Walcott if you have Higuain as well? I'm not so sure.

    Cheers.

Team dependent. Also you must consider whether we're considering this from a FPL perspective, or just in terms of the club's fortunes.

Personally I believe that certain teams NEED marquee signings. While Walcott and Cazorla are definitely world class players, only Walcott has shown enough consistency to produce quality that can win you games. Hence, Higuain will definitely help them do a lot better, of course considering that the players around that core can improve (such as Giroud, the CBs etc.)

For a team who actually made their marquee signing last season (Hazard for Chelsea), so if hey did sign another one, you might experience a struggle for production, for example how you posed the question of increasing assist potential etc.

Personally, I feel that with teams that have to completely revamp their system due to a new signing (like Chelsea), observations will have to be made before WE act according to FPL.

However, sides who already have a very good base and are just lacking a finishing touch (like Arsenal IMO) will definitely encourage me to pick up crossers AND finishers like Higuain and Walcott/Caz depending on which partnership is more successful with Higuain.

Yea that's all from the top of my head

Yeah, but when the Arsenal mids realise that they have a very potent goalscorer like Higuain at top, would they venture as much forward as they did this year, or would they be happy just passing it to the target man?

I mean, does the awesome goalscoring of Cazorla, Walcott and Podolski last year have to do something with Giroud's inability to convert half the chances he got? I wonder.

I do wonder as well. Only a statistical analysis will give us a better clue.

Til then, we'll still have to observe Arsenal GW1, but at least we can keep in mind that we know what to expect from Arsenal compared to last season

I have a quite different outlook on FPL than Bowstring, here goes.

To be honest, your GW1 rank doesn't matter as much as most people believe; it's how you manage your team post-GW1. Using this past season as an example, I started horribly at around 650k, and didn't get much better until around GW20, to where I jumped to a massive 50k from 500k in GW15.

When it comes to captaincy, obviously you cannot be 100% certain a player will score or assist, but you will have a general idea of players who have a good chance to do well.

As for luck, it obviously plays a part, but I don't think it's as relevant when it comes to overall rank. Lets take Triggerlips for example. He has finished top 1000 three seasons running now, and no, it's not due to luck. My general opinion is that luck plays a part separating 1st from 500th, but luck does not swing your rank as extremely as some people believe.

Basically if you play it "safe" with captaincy and don't take hits galore or look for a Doosra differential 😉 then wih the help from experienced FPL posters on here I don't think there's any reason all posters can't finish sub 15-20k.

          Quite achievable yep.

I do recall Forca being at a high rank and brazenly announcing that FPL was 'too easy' and being told by numerous posters he was just getting lucky.

          He fell.

We all know the size of Forca's ego. Plus he himself ditched his "safe strategy" to pursue a higher rank, which is why he fell. (ditched Suarez, RVP, etc)

Perhaps a better way of visualizing this is your score being a point with error bars on a graph: the luck is the error bars and the height of the point is determined by your strategy.

          Thank you.

Sounds like a very sweeping statement made from his own experience, dunno how much I'd agree with that.

Personally I find that everyone will always "see what they want to see" when evaluating their own experiences. What I find more worrying is that people tend to dismiss other opinions due to differences in experience, and I hope that we don't extrapolate our lessons too much based on our experiences.

However, sensible strategy does reap rewards. The key here IMO is not to expect immediate returns. This separates the sensible manager from the extraordinary ones: They know when to pick up a player, as well as when to let go. If a player puts in a bad performance, do you let him go based on his production stats, or how "influential" he was in a game based on your intuition or what you saw?

I will agree with you that luck plays a relatively minor part IF YOU HAVE A SENSIBLE STRATEGY. As there are many ways to skin a cat, you can obtain a high enough ranking if you take sensible hits, or don't take hits and stick to resolve. Both work, and both will have elements of luck that will swing their ranks each way.

Regarding captaincy choices, which are widely seen as 1 week options basically, (unless you make a vow to cap RVP every home game or something) luck certainly plays a slightly bigger part: The key to doing well is having your whole squad delivering REGARDLESS of how the captain does.

For instance, in a single week if RVP is the only "proper" cap choice, then sure cap RVP (Acqua has mentioned this so i shall go no further) but in a gameweek where Bale, RVP and Mata all have good home games, you'd start to cap differentials maybe (based on your position in the ML).

Hopefully no one sees this as me dismissing your experiences, I'm more trying to promote listening to others before making really, really general statements that might lead to more flawed, heated arguments.

Eventually it'd grow to a pretty huge size.

I'm just advocating it'd be easier for all of us. It's something that one of the biggest forums in the world uses (Rule 1 and 2 dictates that I shall not say who) and anyone can access these links if any of the mods etc. found the particular posts useful

I understand what you mean. The problem is the thousands of accounts that would need this function added taking up server space &/or bandwidth. Either way Mark knows about the issue & will probably find you with a reply.

Completely agree there TM, not referring to a personal function, I'm thinking more of a "Public Archive" where you guys (mods) can change/edit/streamline the content worthy of the "public to view".

As for the bandwidth etc, probably a limited size of "threads saved" or something would do the trick, and maybe more space for those who have paid memberships etc.

I'd just really like the Public Archive. Maybe even on a separate site.

I actually agree with you. It is more about playing to a well-knit strategy than luck.

I was around 250k, going nowhere in GW12 or 13 when I first heard about FFS. Since I came here, I only had three red arrows in the next 25 odd weeks, and finished 4k. Can't be coincidence?

And also, it's important to realise what you brand as luck can also be attributed to bad strategy. For example, when I decided to sell Suarez in gw26, that was a very bad decision, which scuppered my chances of a top 1k finish. But then, I decided to look for value in Sturridge, completely overlooking the fact that Suarez was scoring at will. Now I can't really say, ''Look, I decided to keep one Liverpool striker, and sold the other - and now the one I sold decides to score every week. My rotten luck.''

But then, you need that ounce of luck as well. Or otherwise, why would Lukaku choose gw38 to score the biggest haul of his life, and when I keep him as my first sub? 😀

Luck even out over the year , You make your own luck in this game

Like all them who bought in sturridge for the double when he under an injury cloud . Then when he dont play they all moaning about their bad luck

This year i had good start and get in top 50

for other two seasons a very poor start but finished in toop 1000 both times , not even in top 20k at xmas

Key being build up team value to at least 110k by xmas (but not by taking hits)
Then after xmas can quickly move through ranks

Trust me, this season proved to me that you can change the outcome of your season. Ask Canadian Football. I was 500k in GW15, and ready to throw in the towel. I was making all the right moves, but not getting the results. I stuck with it and finished top 400.

Would you say that FFS is perhaps a vicim of its success. In other words, its increasing popularity over the years has diminished its relevance to you?

With the pages moving at an ever increasing rate, meaningful discussion has reduced.

From what I can see HC is an attempt to try and restore FFS to how things were. It will never be the same as it was in the early days before I was around perhaps. However it could be better than it was last year say? What do you think?

I guess we will have to agree to disagree then. The vast majority of posters on here have appreciated the changes, and are pleased that there is better football discussion as a result. Good posts are no longer lost and when they are made a hot topic (like any other forum) you can choose to have a debate with that particular poster if you so wish.

Why Pedersen when you have the cash?
      Get Immobile.

And I don't like 3 dutch attackers in there. Italy are quite good at the back, which is why you are keeping two Italian defenders. 😉

You can't weigh up strong defence v strong attack thinking Spain have a great defence so Norway will never score. How much would you have put on Norway scoring against a well-regarded English defence in Round 2? I hope to have enough to make a team and hopefully one or 2 subs for the final by going 4,4,4 3 in semis. Was tempted to go 6 Spain but erring on the side of caution. Should have minimum 7, hopefully 8 for the final plus 6 FT.

Pedersen is nailed on. Immobile is probably nailed-on, Pedersen definitely is and he has scored, Immobile hasn't. Easier opposition granted but he still scored.Picking forwards based on having plenty of cash rather than form is a bad idea in my opinion.

Why not 18? I think City want to offload Barry since they have Fernandinho now.

Spurs won't be a top 4 club when Bale leaves, they are just preparing for that. 😛

All Arsenal supporters would love that. 😛
Probably they'll sell Dembele to a bigger club.

Yeah always thought he looked better in red and white.

Someone published a list of lessons they learnt from last season they want to follow this year.

Unfortunately you know how it works, usually you end up breaking them when you can bring Rooney in for a hit against some side that just lost 8-0.

Maybe what we need are 'Lesson Buddies' - you promise you have to tell them whenever you feel like breaking one of your lessons.

Then they yell abuse at you.
