Pre-Season

Sleeper – Sergio Aguero

There was no better way for Sergio Aguero to stay in the forefront of our Fantasy thinking ahead of last season’s kick-off. The Argentine’s last-gasp title-winning goal against QPR will go down in legend as one of the Premier League’s defining moments – with Martin Tyler’s stunned reaction providing a worthy accompaniment from the commentary box, it was the stuff that Sky Sports marketing men must have dreamed of:

His contribution that day summed up Aguero’s debut season at the Etihad. Arriving from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2011, his impact was instant from the moment he climbed off the bench to bag a brace in a home rout of Swansea on the opening Gameweek of the campaign. By the time his sweetly-struck strike whistled past Rob Green to clinch the crown, Aguero had racked up 23 goals, nine assists and 30 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points, for a total of 211 points.

Highly priced across the Fantasy games prior to the previous season’s kick-off, Aguero’s exploits ensured he remained a popular pick but the Argentine lasted just 13 minutes of the season opener against Southampton before sustaining a knee injury. With Carlos Tevez affording Fantasy managers a cheaper route into Roberto Mancini’s attack, Aguero was shipped out by almost half a million FPL managers by the time Gameweek 3 arrived and although he returned to the first-team fold by the end of September, the previous season’s momentum was never recaptured.

Despite supplementing 22 league starts with eight sub appearances, Aguero mustered a mere 12 goals as City’s failed to recapture the attacking swagger that wrestled the title from United so spectacularly. With three assists and 16 FPL bonus points also accrued, the Argentine proved a hugely frustrating Fantasy performer and managed just three sets of double figures over the course of the campaign. Finishing on 121 points – 90 less than his first term on these shores – Aguero’s tally was bettered by both Tevez (169) and Edin Dzeko (130) as his season, like City’s, stuttered to a meek conclusion.

The Prospects

With Mancini now gone and Manuel Pellegrini finally installed in the hot seat, City’s acquisition of Fernandinho and Jesus Navas suggests they are determined to go on the offensive a little more often next time round. Having scored 93 goals in their title-winning campaign, they found the net just 66 times last term as opponents found a way of dealing with Mancini’s somewhat one-paced approach.

The new man in charge is likely to opt for a 4-2-2-2 or 4-2-3-1 formation, though either way Aguero looks key to City’s fortunes, while the likes of Dzeko could be offloaded as Pellegrini opts for improved mobility up top. A price drop across the Fantasy games for the former Atletico man seems inevitable after his disappointing showing – having started last term at 11.5, a slip to 11.0 looks realistic and while Tevez may begin cheaper at 10.0 or 10.5, his compatriot’s keen eye for goal holds the greater potential.

With David Silva, Samir Nasri, Yaya Toure and Navas all vying for attention in the City midfield, Aguero seems the safest – and most explosive – Etihad option on next term’s agenda, providing Pellegrini can reignite their attacking drive. In terms of frontline options, Robin Van Persie’s exploits on the other side of Manchester is likely to earn the Dutchman a 13.5 price tag and with many Fantasy managers looking to cut corners with their initial budgets, Aguero could well prove a tempting alternative if Wednesday’s fixture list reveal an opening spell that falls kindly in City’s favour.

My big brags are captaining Wayne Rooney during a double gameweek where he got 32 pts, giving me a total score of around 140. The other was winning the FFS Cup thanks to Drogba stealing penalty duties from Frank Lampard on the last day of the season.

back to back hits for hattricks this year (bale and then walcott). would've been better if i'd listened to myself and captained walcott and played marv (the other transfer in my hit)

though my greatest success story I think would have to be captaining Aguero for his debut against Swansea on a total gut feeling. was my first FPL gw ever too 😎

That Aguero punt is excellent, especially as he started on the bench...must have been a rollercoaster of a watch.

I just had a gut feeling about him that game and in general felt he would have a good season.

tbh with you the game was on too early (I live in the US) so I actually slept through the first half and a bit more, and woke up to turn on the game see aguero get subbed in 5 min later and then do his magic from there :). so wasn't as much of a rollercoaster as it would've been for most

This year. Doing Walcott to Cazorla the week of Cazorla's hat-trick. Was a complete side-ways move, no idea why I did it to be honest but worked out masterfully, especially as I followed it up by getting rid for Bale just in time for his hat-trick in a GWs time.
It's those moments that make the agony of FPL worthwhile.

Starting with Benteke...Lukaku...Mirallas as a front line from my first GW and keeping them until DGW36...It brought a comment on here of..."My god is that your team"...I doubt it would bring the same comment if i did the same this season. It didn't really pull up any trees but three good punts very early on in their FPL careers.

Yeah it was ok but i went heavy on defence instead....Vermaelen (good pick at the time) Kompany and Vertonghen....and the Baines a couple of weeks later...I hope i can find three similar "duff" strikers this season.

Highlight: Finishing 9th overall in the 'Can You Kick It' fantasy game (remember that?). Happened the year after PDM Allstars won the overall prize.

Lowlight: Losing the FPL Twitter World Cup final on the last day of the '11/12 season because of an Emmerson Boyce brace(!). Unbelievable.

Taking a hit for The Yak the week he scored 4 (that felt pretty sweet it was one of only 2 hits taken that season!) and winning the Cup here. Also winning my main mini-league by almost 400 points combined over the last two seasons has been good for bragging rights!!

Capping Frank Lampard against Derby for his 4 goal haul was sweet even if we all saw it coming.

I remember capping Robinho for his hattrick against Stoke City in 08-09 in the season when EVERYBODY seemingly capped Ronaldo week in week out. I recall Ronaldo blanking that week and a huge surge in the rankings that season.

That was my last serious season prior to this one and I finished 13k despite not knowing about sites like this. Good times. 🙂

OK cool. I don't know what it finished on but I said about me not rating the Argentina wide players of Lavezzi and Di Maria and you saying that the way I set the team out there wouldn't be enough width.

I understand that point of few but think that if all three strikers are roaming around they could cause havoc because they would be hard to pick up.

          What do you think?

sure they could cause havoc interchanging positions but I still think they'd need width. otherwise their opposition could just narrow/condense the field and make it really difficult for argentina.

why don't you rate Lavezzi and Di Maria?

I don't think they're. especially Di Maria, team players and they won't do any defending. The benefit of a team being narrow is that they'll condense the team which makes your team naturally better defensively, also if their central attacking midfielder could drop back in it would allow their wing backs to bomb on, Zabaleta in particular as we know is excellent at this.

What, so everyone can afford all the highest scorers in the game, again? It's the high prices that make you have to choose between which heavy hitters to get that makes the game interesting.

This year everyone just had the standard:

        Bale Mata Walcott Michu (Fellaini)
        RVP Suarez (Lambert/Benteke)

        Makes the game insanely boring.

Does anybody play more than one FPL team per season?

Most would consider it cheating but I'm considering experimenting with two teams; one with RVP and Bale and the other with alternatives offering more dilution of spend, then going forward with whatever team starts stonger.

just playing the CL game on top of FPL was a bit much for me last year tbh which is part of the reason I stopped playing this year (in addition to their failures which were very frustrating)

What do you guys think the strongest striker partnership (not for FPL but in general) would be out of these, ignore the fact that some of these would never happen and just assume that the teams all decide to play these 2 strikers:

    Cavani, Aguero

    Cavani, Ba

    Cavani, RVP

    RVP, Rooney

RVP, Lewandowski (This is my pick!)

    Torres, Ba 😀

    Ba, Lukaku

I chose RVP and the big L because I think both know how to connect with another forward really well. RVP did a lot of running out wide at times and showed that he was actually comfortable on the ball in terms of holding it up or waiting before passing it back etc. L and Reus looked like they had a great partnership in the CL final, the one twos and so on showed that it was just the style L is used to when attacking. He doesn't just try to get in behind the defence but wants to play ball.

    Rotation Kings

Ok I know it is early but with a lot of new managers and players in and to come in. Bearing in mind all the comps that they must play in who is safe and who is not.

Starting with the liverpool defence - I think with no Europe and all the problems with defence last year and think the starting four will play most games with them not having to count on the youth to much in these positions. Yes they still require a cb and possible a lb but I would say Agger Johnson are safe. The other positions depend on who they bring in but I do believe once that is done to rotation will be kept to a minimum.

I do expect Toure to play as cant see him coming to warm the bench. But everybody know we are being like with cb every day. I see liverpool buying a young cb to develop for a staring role in the next year or two and see Toure playing week in and week out. But if we go buy a cb who could be in the staring 11 Toure's place won't be safe

What impact does playing a summer competition have on FPL players the following season?

Mata playing the Euro's & the GB Games last summer certainly had an effect on him at the start of the season, which lead to him being rested.

Is there significant evidence to suggest that summer competitions have a negative effect on players at the start of the EPL season?

If so, does that mean avoid Confederation Cup players this August?

He played slightly deeper for those first few matches of last season. I remember an FPL article at the time worrying about whether this was going to be a longer term trend.

So I don't think the apparent drop off in form was necessarily down to fatigue.

I'm not sure Mata himself saw it that way, despite what that article implies. You could interpret those comments as saying to the Spanish FA that they should rest him for the international fixtures around that time.

You're right though, we need to watch these players' pre-seasons like a hawk. Their managers know how to handle it though so I am sure they will be fresh.

I think it can have a serious effect, but Mata barely had any rest in ages. The Con Cup doesnt appear to be too taxing in number of round etc as far as I can tell. Plus playing Tahiti does not count.

The Confederations Cup is a short tournament in comparison to the Euro/WC and won't negatively impact on next season imo.

I think a regular summer competition can affect players in different ways. Some might benefit from having a good tournament and carry that momentum into the new season while others progressing to the latter stages of the tournament on the back of a long domestic campaign will definitely need a good rest ahead of the new season.

Depends on the player...Some seem able to just keep playing regardless (younger ones ?) and just need the odd rest here and there, but not necasserily any more than any other player. In fact i'd go as far as to say they can be better players for it...Oscar springs to mind with his relentless schedule over the past couple of years.

On talkSPORT they keep going on about "the modern football fan" and how kids claim to know more about players than real managers and scouts because they've seen their stats on FIFA and Football Manager, and they even put things on their CV like "I got Doncaster Rovers to the Champions League final on Football Manager." Is there an argument for us fantasy football managers to say it's much more skillful to be a fantasy football manager, and do you think a good real real manager re Fergie would be a good fantasy football manager, or even have an advantage?

I read that article to be arguing that the correlation between tackles and clean sheets was pretty low. They seem to acknowlege this themselves by mentioning the example of Paolo Maldini who famously needed to make fewer tackles because of his positional awareness, and also the paragraph that starts "To hint at why tackles aren't as indicative of success as say shots..."

Is it just me or does anyone think next season will see the return of players from 2 years ago? I mean form players like Aguero, Sigurdsson, Ben Arfa, Evans and co.?

I hope to have at least 2/3 of those above obviously depending on game time. I see no reason why Evans or Aguero would be limited in game time. Vidic/Rio are getting on. Aguero was just unfortunate last season with injury and hopefully suffers a price drop for it 🙂
