Pre-Season

Sleeper – Sergio Aguero

There was no better way for Sergio Aguero to stay in the forefront of our Fantasy thinking ahead of last season’s kick-off. The Argentine’s last-gasp title-winning goal against QPR will go down in legend as one of the Premier League’s defining moments – with Martin Tyler’s stunned reaction providing a worthy accompaniment from the commentary box, it was the stuff that Sky Sports marketing men must have dreamed of:

His contribution that day summed up Aguero’s debut season at the Etihad. Arriving from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2011, his impact was instant from the moment he climbed off the bench to bag a brace in a home rout of Swansea on the opening Gameweek of the campaign. By the time his sweetly-struck strike whistled past Rob Green to clinch the crown, Aguero had racked up 23 goals, nine assists and 30 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points, for a total of 211 points.

Highly priced across the Fantasy games prior to the previous season’s kick-off, Aguero’s exploits ensured he remained a popular pick but the Argentine lasted just 13 minutes of the season opener against Southampton before sustaining a knee injury. With Carlos Tevez affording Fantasy managers a cheaper route into Roberto Mancini’s attack, Aguero was shipped out by almost half a million FPL managers by the time Gameweek 3 arrived and although he returned to the first-team fold by the end of September, the previous season’s momentum was never recaptured.

Despite supplementing 22 league starts with eight sub appearances, Aguero mustered a mere 12 goals as City’s failed to recapture the attacking swagger that wrestled the title from United so spectacularly. With three assists and 16 FPL bonus points also accrued, the Argentine proved a hugely frustrating Fantasy performer and managed just three sets of double figures over the course of the campaign. Finishing on 121 points – 90 less than his first term on these shores – Aguero’s tally was bettered by both Tevez (169) and Edin Dzeko (130) as his season, like City’s, stuttered to a meek conclusion.

The Prospects

With Mancini now gone and Manuel Pellegrini finally installed in the hot seat, City’s acquisition of Fernandinho and Jesus Navas suggests they are determined to go on the offensive a little more often next time round. Having scored 93 goals in their title-winning campaign, they found the net just 66 times last term as opponents found a way of dealing with Mancini’s somewhat one-paced approach.

The new man in charge is likely to opt for a 4-2-2-2 or 4-2-3-1 formation, though either way Aguero looks key to City’s fortunes, while the likes of Dzeko could be offloaded as Pellegrini opts for improved mobility up top. A price drop across the Fantasy games for the former Atletico man seems inevitable after his disappointing showing – having started last term at 11.5, a slip to 11.0 looks realistic and while Tevez may begin cheaper at 10.0 or 10.5, his compatriot’s keen eye for goal holds the greater potential.

With David Silva, Samir Nasri, Yaya Toure and Navas all vying for attention in the City midfield, Aguero seems the safest – and most explosive – Etihad option on next term’s agenda, providing Pellegrini can reignite their attacking drive. In terms of frontline options, Robin Van Persie’s exploits on the other side of Manchester is likely to earn the Dutchman a 13.5 price tag and with many Fantasy managers looking to cut corners with their initial budgets, Aguero could well prove a tempting alternative if Wednesday’s fixture list reveal an opening spell that falls kindly in City’s favour.

What if Chelsea have 2 really hard fixtures for their dgw, and the teams with the other big hitters like Spurs, City, Swansea, Utd, Arsenal all have REALLY good fixtures for their first 3, making it very hard to afford the Chelsea big hitters as well, will you still stock up on Chelsea players?

No. That would negate the benefits of playing twice and reduce their scoring potential. The fixtures are a big part of a DGW.

I think Siggy will unfortunately remain a bit-part player due to the competition at Spurs, Barfa might experience a resurgence if he can stay fit and Newcastle get back to winning ways (same with Aguero) and, there doesn't seem to be anything stopping Evans except for injury or a new signing (if Moyes doesn't fancy him) perhaps.

He isn't, but Bale hasn't had an exceptional season until this one whereas RVP has been the top scoring player two seasons in a row, was great the second half of 10/11 after returning from injury and is the main striker for the league champions. From that you could argue that FPL will price Bale £2m less.

He got 195 points last season, that's a hell of a lot. Bale was the 2nd highest scoring midfielder last season so this year was nothing completely out of the blue. He outperformed RVP in terms of PPG quite significantly this season and at his age is only going to get better. I think it's a safe assumption to say that if both play the same amount this season then Bale will easily match RVP and should be priced accordingly, maybe slightly less due to not having quite the same history as RVP.

195 points is a lot but nowhere near RVPs 269. I agree that they'll score similarly this coming season but Bale's history is some way off RVPs at the moment.

Just not that many good boxing match ups out there in last few years.

Ground & pound can look like a bedroom scene at times but in many fights the effects are very brutal.

Appreciate its not everyone's cup of tea but surprised that Sky has not snapped any MMA up as many different version out there not just UFC as it could further increase the fan base especially in UK.

Why not? Gerrard had a similar haul the previous season before he got a pricing of 11.

More importantly, if Arsenal don't sign a big striker, Walcott & Cazorla will have to do the job yet again.

That said, if Arsenal sign Higuain, I expect these two to be around the 10 mark.

Why Sagna? He got 70 points or something, no attacking returns, and Jenkinson will challenge him for the RB spot this year, that's what I feel as an Arsenal fan.

Because FPL has him as the starting rb for a CL team... His points haul last season will not significantly affect his price. I believe 6.0 most likely and 5.5 absolute minimum

I think you've over priced their whole defence and GK by 0.4 besides Fabianski, Santos and Miquel

I reckon Theo and Caz will be 10 but the rest of the mid looks decent and if Diaby is fit that coujld be a good 5th mid pick.

I think Giroud is also 0.5 over priced.

Speaking on the topic of painful FPL experiences from the last page.

I can't remember what year it was but I'd been top of my ML from October to the last day of the season.

Man City had lots of problems due to their ownership which affected their players. They played Middlesbrough on the last game of the season and lost something like 6-0. My mate had put Alfonso 'F'kin' Alves as captain who scored a hat trick and lost me the league.

    😥

Oh I forgot, in my first season a couple years back I left my wildcard until the last second and I didn't have time to sort my team out - meaning the deadline passed with...Leon Best as my captain! (that was when Dempsey scored that hattie against Newcastle.) I didn't look at my team for another 5-6 weeks after that due to absolute rage and found out that Best was red-flagged for the entire time whilst still being my captain. Still finished 237 in the world mind.

The GW last season when Mancini rested Richards, Silva and Aguero(c) in an easy home fixture. Vice captain Dempsey scored a brace and I got a CS, assist and baps from Shotton of all people off the bench.

More recently, Lampard coming off the bench before 30 minutes for an injured Ramires and getting a goal and assist, stealing a penalty off Hazard in the process 😀

Captained Drogba on the opening day of 2010-11 when he scored a hat-trick in the 6 - 0 demolition of West Brom. It really ignited my fantasy career. I was top 10K from GW 1, and I don't think I left it all season. Ended the season 1515th.

I consider it lucky, because before that season, I was happy with my 38840th finish and winning my mini-league.

A Kevin Nolan hat-trick with 2 Carroll assists in Newcastle's 5 - 1 win over Sunderland in the same season also springs to mind!

Does alcohol have an effect on your FPL rank?

We have all been there; a few beers on a Friday night, you think about your FPL team...

The plan is to find a statistical indicator that works for a single player, aka RVP, then roll it out on all the players and see how strong it is.

Might need to find In Tommy we Trust to get a breakdown of his thoughts on statistical form after those tables

The thing about ICT is that it is an amalgamation of all the stats from a given game into a single figure. I don't think the Scouts have written anything about how it is calculated, but I think the same methodology is used irrespective of the player's position.

So in the case of RVP, we are interested in this goal threat and less interested in his influence or creativity. It might be more insightful to look at the correlation with the 'T' in ICT rather than the full ICT figure.

However, we know that for a variety of reasons, underlying form is often not rewarded with FPL points (e.g. a striker comes up against a keeper in blinding form), so I bet the correlation there is not particularly strong either.

Also, when you are looking at the previous two fixtures, you are not making any allowance for who those fixtures are against. If RVP played two of the meanest defences in the league before coming up against Wigan who allow him to run riot, then the raw stats might suggest he has no form going into the Wigan game.

I think the Glover model attempts to make allowance for this by looking at how many shots a particular team concede on average.

Then don't you need to make some sort of adjustment to the ICT figure to remove the impact of fixture? In my hypothetical situation with RVP, if all other things (including his form) are equal, his ICT will be poor for the first 2 games, then off the chart against Wigan.

              So yes.

I was using only the threat rating rather than the combined. Might be worth trying the others as well to see if I get better results.

I'd rather use goal attempts as the basis but its a pain in the arse dragging those stats out of the members area for every GW.

You make a good point about form often going unrewarded and that could have a substantial effect, I'll try and spot any outliers having a great effect.

When FFS posted the interview with the guy who won fpl last year, one thing that stood out to me was that he only looked at the next 3 fixtures and picked his team accordingly.

I've been guilty of making that mistake in the past. So this year I might just pick players for the short term and keep changing it as & when required.

What changes to your playing style do you intend to make, if at all?

Not taking as many hits. Focusing on more a balance between form and fixtures as last year I was too fixture focused.

A lot of these guys say that they took no hits, and recommend not to take hits, but that's because they had Michu/RVP/Fellaini from very early on. Taking hits early on in the season can help you get players cheap for the whole season.

Had the issue late last night 🙁

Also it refused to allow me to start DDG in S/F so had to keep the Norway reserve in goal hoping he would autosub out - that failed as well.

All you can do is work out the budget you have and the players you want and get in any cheap Norwegians now that allow you to do the rest of your transfers once the game updates.

I wrote Italy off and brought in Dutch players only for the SF so they will probably win it.

Only 1 goal conceded between both teams over 8 games 😯

Netherlands always do well against weaker team but cannot handle the big games.
Italy team looks very passion, I like to see they beating Spain that always win everything.

Spain have been dominant and have a few game winners & in Isco he has been superb. Really cannot see Italy beating them unless on penalties.

Yes....Italy have decent options but in the games to date the Spanish individually look more likely to create chances. Isco has been superb and came close himself 3 times in the first half and his experience shows.

Isco or Insigne are the most likely to unlock either defence.

Low scoring game so defenders might not be a bad shout for (c). Although you need at CS for 120 minutes if the game does go the distance.

Psychologically you would continue playing until you were consistently winning in typical cases. If you won as a one off (again this is based on typical psychology) you would continue playing. It's the not knowing if there's going to be a reward that generally keeps people going (despite the fact that logically you would think it would be the guarantee of a reward).

Confederation Cup last night Neymar got Brazil off to a great start but they are under huge pressure to win this Cup at home in preparation for the World Cup. This could back fire if they don't win with possible knee jerk sacking of Scolari as he is refusing to select a few crowd pleasers like Robinho & Kaka.

Saftey again is questioned in the country, as there was carnage outside the stadium as Brazilians are still protesting regarding the money spent to host these tournaments.

All particularly interesting as I would love to go next year & take my nipper.

Italy v Mexico 8pm tonight and 11pm Spain v Uruguay (BST) two great looking games and looking at the squads, these countries are taking this Cup seriously which is great for armchair fans.

These KO times - are these likely to be replicated in the World Cup? I was sure that there was talk of several games due to KO in the early hours?

Yeah - but FIFA will want to global sponsorship income and often will try to schedule KO's to generate high TV viewers & revenue...so hopefully not many in the early hours.
