Pre-Season

Sleeper – Charlie Adam

His debut season in the Premier League will forever live in Fantasy football folklore but ever since that 2010/11 campaign with Blackpool, it’s been all downhill for Charlie Adam. Back then, as the creative hub of Ian Holloway’s promoted side, Adam proved a cut-price phenomenon – with spot-kick and set-piece duties boosting his appeal, the Scot racked up 12 goals, nine assists and 45 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points for a total of 192 points:

Signed by Liverpool after the Tangerines suffered the ignominy of relegation, Adam was then snapped up by Stoke last summer after failing to settle at Anfield. Hopes were relatively high for the Scot’s Fantasy prospects, with his delivery from free-kicks and corners seeming the ideal aerial fodder for the likes of Robert Huth, Ryan Shawcross and Peter Crouch. It’s fair to say it hasn’t quite turned out that way, though – Tony Pulis’ tactics afforded him little license to prosper as a Fantasy force – indeed, towards the end of last term, Adam was fielded as a right winger for the Potters.

Starting only 22 league matches in 2012/13 – with five appearances also off the bench – Adam failed to establish himself as a regular and managed 90 minutes on just five occasions; all too often, he was the victim of his former manager’s tactical tweaks midway through the second-half of matches. Despite producing attacking returns in each of his last three appearances, then, Adam registered just three goals, six assists and five bonus points for a total of 85 points in Pulis’ last term in charge at the Britannia.

The Prospects

With Mark Hughes now installed as the new man in charge at the Britannia, Adam’s prospects suddenly look a little more enticing for the campaign ahead. The Welshman is desperate to address the dire attacking record which saw the Potters score just 34 times last season – the second worst record in the Premier League – and, in addition to restructuring his backroom team, has released seven players as part of a summer clear-out.

The decision to let go long-throw specialist Rory Delap seems somewhat symbolic as Hughes looks to freshen up his options and bring about a more expansive style of play. Crucially, as far as Fantasy managers are concerned, however, the Welshman has talked up Adam as a key component of his side for 2013/14.

“I’m looking forward to working with Charlie day in day out and it will be an exciting time. We’ll get to know each other on a number of levels. I know his quality and he can affect a game in all manner of ways by the strength of his ability. It’s about getting the best out of him and finding the best position for him to be most effective.”

Certainly, for all their work-rate and physical endeavour under Pulis, Stoke severely lacked in creativity. Adam’s six assists was joint-top for the club last term despite the fact he played just 1,758 minutes – having provided a total of 20 assists in his first two seasons in the top-flight, though, his potential for teeing up team mates is obvious. Likely to be installed in the centre of the Potters midfield, Adam’s eye for a killer pass and dead-ball ability may see him once again arrive on our radars – corners and free-kicks look likely, while Fantasy managers will be hoping that Jon Walters’ patchy spot-kick record may persuade Hughes to hand the Scot penalties, too.

Price-wise, Adam looks set to drop across the Fantasy games after the previous term’s disappointment. Initially costing 7.0 in FPL last summer, a slip to 6.5 or even 6.0 will be anticipated – granted, that’s a little too expensive for our cheap fifth midfielder spot but if Hughes can revitalise Adam’s playmaking potential after his recent toils under Pulis, it’s a cost kind enough to consider the Scot as a mid-price option.

So the FA have decided not to offer Pearce a new contract. Who would be a good candidate to replace him?

His comments laying blame on the players after three consecutive losses in Israel shocked me a bit. His tactics or the British bulldog's football philosphy didnt suprise me.

What would you really expect from a left back called Psycho?

Looking at his squad and teams he put out it surprised me that the Josh McEachran's or Tom Carroll's didnt play.

I think under age international tournaments are essential in developing a winning mentality for the future and establishing a style of play.

Can future England u21s achieve this and under who?

Why? The Spanish and German leagues also have many different nationalities.Spain's most successful period has come at a time when they've had fewer domestic players in the league than at any time in their history.

I'd be very surprised if they had anywhere near the same amount that play here.

Much higher proportion of non-domestic players in Premier League yea, but we have relatively more money.

Exactly, Spanish players in the PL because Spanish players are better, no English players in La Liga because they aren't good enough (simplifying a bit, money, culture etc play a huge part too)

I wanna thank RonH for helping me achieve my best ever rank in a fantasy game. His performance in bed was the main reason for that. I love you RonH.

I like how Paul rewrites history in his article and wipes out the year Charlie spent at Liverpool after Blackpool's relegation... 😉

Yes, someone may want to tell Paul that Charlie Adam went to Liverpool when Blackpool were relegated and Stoke afterwards!!!! FFS does vex me at times, not because of errors like this (normally accurate) but because my best laid plans are revealed!

Wildcarding : when to do it?

    Hello All,

Just ran out some analysis on correlation between rank and when someone played their WC. Interesting results. A huge amount of data collected, so here's my attempt at a relatively concise and useful summary.

Samples of 50 teams were taken out of every block of 1,000, with GW's of the WCs being noted.

Over 95% of teams in the top 1000 sample played their first wildcard on or before GW5. A staggering 90% of these were GW 2 or 3.

From 1000-2000 this decreased quite noticeably to below 85%, with a much wider spread of between GW's 1 and 5.

Every 1000 drop in ranking resulted in a progressing wider spread of early (ie GW 1-5) wildcards, however this does not drop below 75% until beyond 8000.

Every sample taken in the top 100K showed at least 60% played their wildcards within the first five gameweeks.

Over 95% of people in the top 100K played both WCs, with the January WC being the second, and final one for over 95%.

NOTE ON JANUARY: The limited window in which the January wildcard could be played threw up results which should be analysed with some caution. Very little of significance here apart from the fact that GW 23 was underrepresented.

From 100k to 1 Million, GW 1-5 Wildcards remained the most popular choice, although not by an outright majority. becoming less popular as the rankings descend. There is a considerable variation in when WCs are being played.

Going beyond rankings of one million tended to generate significantly varied results, as more and more dead/abandoned teams were encountered. Analysing these and generating useful conclusions is a task in itself!

In conclusion, it would appear that an early wildcard was a statistically significant route to success, especially if the aim was to finish in the upper quartile of the FPL cohort. And for those for you interested, it would appear the magic numbers are GW's 2 and 22 if you were aiming for a top 10K finish.

I'm wary of spamming as this study threw up a phenomenal amount of data, with corresponding correlations and variances. Methodology, evaluation, statistical tests and the like available on request, although it could take a bit of time to present it in a vaguely digestible manner.

      Thanks for posting!

I don't know if this will the same for every season but it just seemed right to play an early WC this season.

The Chelsea DGW at the start of next season will surely see more people going down the same route again

Wow, I was not expecting that. I had always assumed that the early wildcard was the refuge of the failed managers like me. Maybe it works as a slingshot to create the perfect team given excellent analysis and inate understanding of the small sample of premierleague games. It does suggest to me that the top managers are very skilled at this game and luck plays less of a part, as it must take incredible amount of skill to use a GW2 WC effectively. Mine always fails horrifically as I jump on the wrong bandwagons.

btw I just saw your previous post from the link in your new article and was wondering if you could visualise your ghost team scores for us?

My early WC (GW4) was very much a calculated risk. I'm usually really conservative as well.

It was pretty darn good too (ignoring most of my bench and Hangeland)

I really need to learn to pick a well rounded team I GW1/on a WC. It really is my biggest failing in this game and I am pretty sure has the biggest effect on fantasy performance than any theory about taking hits/captaincy.

I always start badly so often have to wildcard gwk 4-8 somewhere. I'd like to see one season if I can hang on... Nice to read though that an early wildcard may be advisable anyway.

Two of the biggest decisions for me on that WC were Pie vs. Fellaini and Bale vs. Hazard. They were both very close decisions, and I ended up bringing both in within a few gameweeks anyway.

I like the idea of it being a slingshot. For me, it was to fix a couple of bad transfers and to get on some of the bandwagons that I thought seemed unmissable.

I wrote more detailed on the other post, but a probability density function of the ghost team scores would be nice to see. Would turn the talk of standard deviation and varaiance into a simple image. Your posts arent that accessible to the general public at the moment, but everyone can read a graph.

Hmm, my first reply fell foul of the potty mouth filter (I thought sh1t was allowed? not that I was calling the analysis sh1t, quite the opposite!).

This was a surprise to me, I don't think I've ever used my main wildcard before Christmas. Whenever I have a poor start I've always tried to grind my way back up through taking hits, in the assumption that having a wildcard later in the season when FA cup fixture havoc was hitting heavily would be more beneficial. Perhaps I was wrong in that regard.

One word of caution though - correlation is not the same as causation; just by wildcarding early, it doesn't mean you'll improve your overall rank by the end of the season.

If I could have a signature, it would be that first paragraph by 3rd Turd. The stats and statistical analysis can throw out correlations, the theory and discussions afterwards establishe the cause, if any. Hence why i was very careful to say it was a 'statistically significant' route to success!

Currently it would seem that the slingshot theory is gaining momentum...

      Brilliant analysis.

"Over 95% of teams in the top 1000 sample played their first wildcard on or before GW5. A staggering 90% of these were GW 2 or 3." - can't believe at how high that percentage is!

Surely its impossible to argue against playing the wildcard early doors? Maybe creating a 'dream team' tailored for GW1 wouldn't be completely foolish.

Brilliant post....I'm assuming part of the reason for the early WC is the chance to cash in dramatically on the excessive transfer activity early on in the game...especially where that coincides with the first DGW...Plenty of players rising by 0.2 or 0.3 and plenty of players falling like a stone could easily see a clever player with a substantial gain in team value..as well as accquiring in form players (?)...

I wish i could upvote this twice. Bloody brilliant analysis.

Makes me comfortable with an early wildcard. Finished top 200 this season and used my wildcard very late as i was lucky enough to get a good start. Just shows how important a good start is.
