Moving Target

Moving Target – Simon Mignolet

Brendan Rodgers’ summer spending spree continued on Tuesday evening with the acquisition of Simon Mignolet from Sunderland. The 25-year-old arrives at Anfield on a long-term deal for a reported fee of £9m, which could potentially rise to £12m.

Mignolet is the club’s fourth signing since the end of the previous campaign and joins Kolo Toure, Luis Alberto and Iago Aspas on Merseyside as Rodgers wastes little time in restructuring his first-team squad. Upon completion of the deal, the Liverpool boss went on to say:

“I am delighted that we have been able to sign one of the top goalkeepers in the Barclays Premier League. Simon will join a club that will give him an opportunity to demonstrate and improve his huge talent.”

The History

The Belgian’s career began in his homeland with local club Sint-Truiden. Rising up through the youth system, Mignolet became first-choice stopper by the age of 18 for the second division side and made 100 appearances over the course of four seasons. Moving to Sunderland in June 2010, he chose the Wearsiders over PSV, FC Twente and Udinese in a deal which cost the club just £2m.

After seeing off the challenge of Craig Gordon for the number one spot in his first season, Mignolet went on to make 90 appearances over three years for the Black Cats and was one of only four keepers to play every minute of the 2012/13 campaign. The 25-year-old – who has saved four of the 16 spot-kicks faced since arriving in the Premier League – has also turned out for his country a total of 13 times.

The Prospects

Ultimately, Mignolet’s Fantasy potential will be determined by the future of Pepe Reina. Although Rodgers has already denied the Belgian has been bought as Reina’s replacement, the common consensus of opinion is that the latter is set to move on, thus ensuring Mignolet’s role as the club’s number one. Certainly, with the World Cup just a year away, it would seem a strange move for Mignolet to make unless he’s been given assurances of regular game time. The former Sunderland man has revealed he’s had several conversations with Rodgers, who was keen to acquire a keeper who would be comfortable with his passing game ethos:

“Back in Belgium, the goalies always train to play with the ball at their feet. We join in most of the time, playing more with our feet than with our hands. I’m used to this. I’ve spoken to him [Rodgers] a few times already and I’m very pleased. He is very ambitious, like I am.”

Looking at last term’s displays, Liverpool stuttered in the first few matches under Rodgers but their defensive progress was marked as the players grew accustomed to the new manager’s tactics. Having conceded 12 times in the first six matches, the Reds shipped just 31 goals in the remaining 32 matches in a run that harvested 16 clean sheets, with 11 at Anfield and five on the road.

While the defensive prospects look enticing for the season ahead, then, the attacking potential offered by full-backs Jose Enrique and Glen Johnson, in addition to Daniel Agger’s eye for goal, remain the most appealing route into Rodgers’ backline. With the trio set to come in around the 6.5 mark in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), however, they’ll be far from budget-friendly – the hope will be that the uncertainty surrounding the number one jersey may just cause Fantasy games to hedge their bets and decide to price Mignolet and Reina a little more favourably and perhaps present us with a bargain. Nevertheless, with rotation pairings between the sticks the most favoured tactic, anything more than 5.5 is likely to force Mignolet out of the picture, regardless of regular game time.

Instead, our attentions may now turn to the club he’s left behind. Kieran Westwood may now get the nod as Paolo Di Canio’s new number one and, having failed to play a single minute last term, there’s a chance that Fantasy games could keep him in the budget bracket, given that he’s yet to establish himself as a first-team regular. If Westwood remains at 4.5, then, and Tim Krul – as expected – drops down to 5.0 after Newcastle’s dire previous campaign, we could be presented with a Tyne-Wear partnership for less than 10.0. The two clubs rotate on a home/away basis over the 38 Gameweeks and with an opening schedule that would read (FUL, WHM, FUL, avl, HUL) in the first five matches, may afford us a potentially prosperous solution to the goalkeeping conundrum for the campaign ahead.

With the likes of Julio Cesar already linked with a move to the Stadium of Light, however, it remains to be seen whether Di Canio is willing to afford Westwood the chance to nail down the chance of a regular role quite yet.

It seems that despite all the modern advances in football, there still seems to be a place for the old fashioned big bustling Center Forward.

Following on from an earlier discussion about players that were a success when they moved over here vs those that failed abysmally, I had a look at what sort of Forward seemed to do well upon moving to the Premier League

The center forwards that have done well in the first year of arriving in the league have typically been Target Men as opposed to Goal Poachers/Good Finishers with pace.

Christian Benteke (winner of the most aerial duels in the league), Andy Carroll (!), Ricky Lambert and Grant Holt all did well upon arriving in the league, and are varying flavours of essentially the same type of player. Their stats and heatmaps are similar - high number of aerial battles won, good strength, above average passing accuracy. To a lesser extent, Edin Dzeko and Giroud, who's substitute appearances and lack of overall game time belie the fact that they did indeed have statistically good first seasons. None of them above players had a particularly high conversion rate at their previous clubs, however they did get a lot of shots away.

Whereas with the exception of Fernando Torres, goal poachers and finishers such as Shevchenko, Crespo and Boselli seem to have struggled to adapt quickly.

And just to muddy the waters even more - Demba Ba, Cisse and Pogrebnyak arrived well rested on the back of a winter break to a strong start, but the last two quietened down more or less completely.

And what about the mixed fortunes of the forward/winger/second striker hybrids? Aguero settled in straight away, while Suarez, despite showing flashes of brilliance, took longer to settle - if such a term could be used to describe his situation. Berbatov exploded in his second season at Tottenham after having a good, but not spectacular first. Coutinho and Odemwingie both adapted quickly with their own styles, while Hazard looks to be on the cusp of a great season.

Is English football especially good at producing and attracting traditional center forwards, which is why many come up from the lower leagues and do well at the higher levels? Likewise, are the goal poachers and finishers shackled by strong defenders, starved of supply and space that they are used to abroad? Do skillful tricksters prove too much to handle for our allegedly rudimentary and graceless defenders, allowing them to terrorise defences once they have settled?

Crucially, does this mean that Higuain will have a shocker, Bony will get the golden boot, and Cavani occupy the middle ground somewhere in between?

So basically we need to be looking at aerial dual success crossed with whether they've had a good rest during the summer. (quickly nips into the members area to make an aerial duals table)

Indeed, the question is are these sorts of players now dealt with in the premier league?

You could argue Bent too considering Ipswich were in the premiership when he debuted, but yes - he's a goal poacher who came up new to the premier league. I consider Owen and Defoe pretty much started in the Premier League. And Henry is a well known example of a player who took a while to settle, spending half of his first season struggling to score while being moulded from a winger to a striker.

For members - a look at last season's top 20 aerial dualing strikers. Cross reference this with whether they've had a summer break, and the usual factors like whether they are a first team regular and should come up with some good options particular for mid price strikers.

In two words - Kenwyne Jones.

But seeing as how high Crouch is that says alot about Stoke's very one dimensial game of hoofing the ball to the big lad up top and see what happens. Teams that do that with a very good striker (villa, west ham) prove that this theory is sound and target men are ones to get.

Depends if Evra stays or goes. If he stays we could be in for some rotation (although personally I can't see either player standing for that).

I suspect Evra could be off back to France, PSG or Monaco.

Remember Baines probably won't be on pens at United, or hog the corners and freekicks.

Extra clean sheet potential could balance it out a little though.

Yeah Baines Baines Baines .. but would he be a good pick at Man Utd?

Well, here's my take on things. If Evra stays, he's got fierce competition so I wouldn't even consider him. If Evra leaves however things get interesting.

Baines scored 2 pens last season and delivered 1 assist from set pieces according to the stats in the members area. Let's assume for arguments sakes that he won't be on any set pieces at Man Utd so we'll take these goals, assists and related bonus points (Estimated at 6) away.

Now, substitute the amount of clean sheets he got at Everton (11) with the amount of clean sheets Man Utd got last season (13) and we have taken away 21 points and replaced them with 8. I.e. a loss of 13 points overall, given the points we took away above.

This doesn't take into account additional chances he may create at Man Utd of course which could be huge and that is the unknown at present, assuming he is first choice. Does this equate to an extra 13 points over the course of a season? I'd say so.

To conclude, if Evra leaves then Baines is still a top option and hasn't reaped as many points from open plays as I first thought, as long as his price doesn't increase significantly.

Perhaps .. based on the chances Baines creates though he is right up there with some midfielders. All about finding the right balance but a first choice Baines at Man Utd will be the highest scoring defender on the game without question, in my view and will comfortably outscore most £7.5m midfielders.

Baines got 5 Opta assists from 117 chances created last season. Given that Evra got 5 from 25 and you can see the potential straight away from playing in a team with better finishers.

A simple pro rata of 20% of 117 chances would imply 23 assists 😯

    Baines at United.
With Evra staying he's not in consideration.
However, if he leaves, then I feel he'll take over corner duties to allow for RVP's presence in the box.
Fk's shall be up in the air but he will get some.
    He'll get more clean sheets.
And.. You'll have the player who created the most chances in Europe last season creating them for Rvp, Rooney & Hernandez instead of Victor Aneichebe...
Plus he makes Mirallas more attractive with potential set pieces.. Happy days 😀

Unless Baines keeps hold of set pieces duties, no.

It would have to be an exceptional defender that is worth 8m. I could be swung into it if if he nails down the left wing role though and becomes an Out of position prospect though.

So I've done a bit of digging and wondered if Baines would be worth 8m if he goes to Manchester United. Assuming he's first choice and doesn't have penalties or many free kicks anymore that leaves him with just two assets in his locker...assists and clean sheets.

In terms of assists I wondered whether all his off the chart level of crossing would be more likely to lead to assists at Man Utd than at Everton.

The answer should be yes and the stats prove it. Baines as a 30 per cent success rate with his crosses, compared to just 20 per cent for Mata. Mata however got 12 assists, compared to Baines' 5 assists.

That says to me that if Baines goes to Man Utd he is very likely to top the assist charts for 2013/14. Factoring in an upturn in clean sheets as well then Baines is definitely worth 8m if he goes to Man Utd.

Comparing Mata and Baines makes no sense whatsoever, since mata doesn't get most of his assists through crosses like Baines. He has that clever "spanish" through ball that takes out the whole defence.

I think he MAY be worth it at some point of the season, will not be getting him for the start of the season though.

I think Moyes will have a tough first season, so i'm not sure ManU will really have more CS than the Everton 11 from last season. It really all depends on how Moyes lines up United and their defensive form throughout the season. He may get 10 assists over the season - but if they dont get cs's he wont be worth it.

Mata is well in the top ten crosses of the ball. He gets assists from all sorts of places, corners, crosses and through balls. He's just a benchmark being the best assister last season, to show what Baines could be capable of.

If he had his standard Everton role, maybe.

But I don't think he'll get that much freedom. Unless Moyes turns him into a pure winger (which I just cannot see happening) he'll be in a different role, with more defensive responsibility.

Depends on various factors i think. Right now, i'd have to say no. If Evra goes, and there's nobody else bought to threaten Baines, only then does he become tempting. His assists have depreciated over the seasons, not been as great since the days of Tim Cahill. This should in theory change with RvP being fed instead. Baines will lose pens which for me was a massive part of his appeal. It's what made him worth 0.5/1m more than the top top defenders from City/Chelsea. I therefore don't think he'll offer enough value at 8m. 7m would be very tempting, but anything more and i think there's better elsewhere.

He'll still have somefree kicks and corners though, i don't doubt that.

I think he could be, but there will be better value elsewhere.

Let's say Evra leaves so Baines is first choice. Obviously everyone will have their own view on what is realistically capable of at United, but I'll assume he plays 30 games, 13 clean sheets, 5 goals, 12 assists. That's around 180 ignoring baps and yellow cards. At an average rate of around 22 points per £ that's an implied fair price of £8m.

That assist upturn is the key factor for me. If Mata can get 12 and only a fifth of his crosses ever meet a team mate, then Baines surely must be able to match that at least next season if a third of his crosses are successful....and of course he is at Man Utd and playing with the likes of RVP.

Have you ever thought why RVP tooked/takes the corners for United?

      a) was it because they (United) didn't have a left side player all season past Evra?!
      b) was it because he is the best (EPL wise) curling them from the right side?

And free kicks? Surely Baines its more dangerous on them.
The short/close ones and the long ones (@Newcastle).
He can it them in style or applying the force.

Have Baines ever missed a penalty for Everton?
      This here is more debatable.

But CS wise, assist wise, and possible goals on open play and FKs i think he could worth that £8m!

I could just read it and then make the stats my own in a sticky attempt but I'm too lazy.

Nice article on Moyes' tactics and what it could mean at Utd http://squawka.com/news/2013/06/27/david-moyes-at-united/2013062711846

What of Oviedo? He seemed like a Baines replacement when they got him. He'd be wingback for Everton this year and maybe reclassified as a defender? Could be as low as £4.5m after only starting one game last season.

if the prices come out after he is transferred then he will be priced accordingly :/

Bye bye Coleman, Hello Oviedo. FPL have to classify him a defender and can they raise his price on a predicted increase in starts? Don't think so. 4.5 mil. Opens the door to an Uber defence that has a 4way rotation + Oviedo

If were a 4.5 defender, I'd snap him up, no bother. A lot of ifs but one to keep an eye on.

Probably too much to risk at that price. Better off just getting Coleman.

Is there any precedent for this in FPL?

Better yet, if he is 5 or under he can fall into the rotation category with Baines the big hitter. Don't see how I could not pick Baines at United

yes, players have increased despite poor showings the season before if they are then assumed to be now first choice. I hope Oviedo id 4.5, straight in team crash bang wallop!

If Baines is to join Man U, I found this an interesting read as to now that might improve Kagawa's chance of returns...

How the hell are we going to fit RVP, Cavani/Higuain/Aguero, Baines, Bale and maybe a Chelsea midfielder into our teams 😯

What I like about this year is there looks like there's going to be a lot of variation! 😀

I actually think the question we should be asking is Baines cover enough to go without RVP, allowing ourselves to pick the likes of Bale and co? For me yes

If Kagawa is in the hole, he's my hedge for an RVP-less gamble.

Baines + Kagawa for 15.5 mil compared to a 13.5 mil for RVP. Write it like that then there's no choice

I have captain Baines before and if Kagawa is set for the season we think he's going to have, yes but I get your point. At what price difference would that argument become a non factor?
