Sky Sports Fantasy Football 2013/14 Goes Live

As many of you will have noticed, the Sky Sports Fantasy Football game was officially launched earlier today, allowing us the opportunity for some early pre-season tinkering. We plan to analyse the player list in detail over a series of upcoming articles but for now, here’s a heads-up on some rule changes that have been introduced for 2013/14.

No Monthly Transfer Restrictions
Fantasy managers now have the opportunity to essentially wildcard a brand new team at any point during the season, providing they have an adequate number of trades left. Last season, we were, somewhat frustratingly, afforded a maximum of just five transfers per calendar month but this time round there are no restrictions – we can utilise our 40 transfers as we wish over the course of the campaign.

Save Points for Keepers
A crucial addition to the scoring system. Previously, stoppers were handed out points for clean sheets alone but their appeal is set to improve after Sky Sports decided to reward their endeavours between the sticks – for every five saves a keeper makes, he will now receive couple of bonus points; definitely something to consider when mulling over their merits. We will be adding save points bonus to our stats tables in the members area to allow analysis of how keepers would have fared over the past two seasons – we will update you when that’s available.

Captain Changes
A very significant rule change which offers the chance to accrue points from two captains in any given Gameweek. The Sky Sports game differs from the “stick or twist” scenario familiar to most Fantasy managers – you pick up double points from both your initial skipper and his armband replacement. If your first captain plays on a Saturday, you can, however, only switch the armband to someone with a match on Sunday or Monday – ie, a player with a fixture on a different day within the same Gameweek. You can change captain only once per Gameweek.

Other New Introductions
A “Shortlist” feature, similar to the Watchlist in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), allows to pencil in our potential targets for the games ahead. There’s also an Assistant Manager on hand to offer advice if required, where there will also be Awards on offer for our respective teams’ performances which could potentially lead to prizes – Sky Sports are looking to release more details later in the month.

It’s also worth noting that an app for Apple and Android devices is also available to ease those team changes whilst laden with supermarket bags. Handy.

The prizes have also be enhanced, with no less than £30,000 on offer for the winner this time around.

Scout Leagues
Thanks to our endeavours last season – which saw Fantasy Football Scout top of the Private League rankings – Sky Sports are now offering a £1,000 prize for the Fantasy manager who finishes in top spot in the FFS league this time round; enough motivation for most to get involved, surely.

The league name is “FFScout” and the code is 8000112 : we’ll get these posted in the middle column of the homepage.

Finally, we’re also considering the idea of an official money league this season. In another new feature, Sky Sports offer the option of £2, £5, £10 or £20 entry fee per person in a private league – we’ll have more on this if we decide to roll out an official Scout League. Give us your thoughts on this.

If you have any feedback on your early experiences with the game, be sure to post them in comments below. Already today we’ve passed on some issues regarding performance which have been examined and addressed due to feedback here.

As mentioned, we’ll be rolling out regular articles in the pre-season to guide your early decision making, including an appraisal of the player list and some position by position analysis.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

So why would FFS make a money league that excludes 50% on this site?

Ok, the captain rule, let me see if i understand it.

RVP plays on Saturday as your captain, he gets 30(15x2) points, you can then change it on Saturday night to Aguero(who is playing on Sunday) and get double his score, and also keep RVP's 30? And you can do this once every GW?

And then what if you wanted to do the same pattern(RVP on Saturday, Aguero on Sunday) the following GW. Would you changing Aguero(who was my captain at the end of the last GW) back to RVP imbetween the two GWs count as your one change for the week?

      I'm thoroughly confused 😕

"New for this season - you can now make a captain change within the Game week. Just like transfers, you can make this alteration for any match day, thus giving you the opportunity to score double points from two of your players over the duration of the Game week."

I think what I said above would happen, interesting rule.

Tried it before and didn't like the style. If one of your players gets benched or injured you have no subs to replace them. You get points if a player gets a certain number of passes or tackles, all of which seem dependant on opposition strategies and seems too luck based to me. it's a game still rough around the edges and lacking the tactical and balanced nature of FPL. No thanks.

  17. Analysis of the uber
    This!
    • 12 Years
    10 years, 10 months ago

Just did a basic analysis of The Uber, provided by "In Tommy We Trust" (you rockstar). I wanted to see what PPG would be for the last season's home games (uber has 77% home games) vs below the top 7 teams. The uber consists of cheap defenders from SOU, NOR, WBA, SWA, HULL. Critique to myself, I picked players with some attacking force, but not necessarily the most expensive or most points.

SOU Clyne; 3.36 ppg at home vs below top 7
WBA McAuley; 3.66 ppg home vs below top 7
NOR R.Martin; 4.1 ppg home vs below top 7
SWA Davies; 3.36 ppg home vs below top 7
AVL Lowton; 4 ppg home vs below top 7 (Aston Villa - as crap as Hull maybe?)

AVG score per defender for these games (11ish), were 3.7 ppg. Not bad considering Zabaleta was 4.1, Ivanvic 4.2, GJhnson 3.9, Azpi 3.7. Heavy hitters were Baines 4.7, Evra 4.5.

    - Clynes overall ppg was 2.6 (vs 3.36 at home vs below top 7)
    - McAuley overall ppg was 3.1 (vs 3.66 ppg at home vs below 7)
    - Martin's overall ppg was 3.1 (vs 4.1 at home vs below top 7)
    - Davies overall ppg was 2.7 (vs 3.36 at home vs below top 7)
    - Lowton overall ppg was 2.5 (vs 4 at home vs below 7)

Pretty significant results! Mind you all these games were home games (the uber has 77% home games). Thanks again "In Tommy We Trust"!

Professor, one question on your analysis. Is this just a random 5 clubs selected as the uber actually uses 7 clubs over 19 gameweeks?

Will do a bit of analysis using last seasons results to see if your stats stand up.

For anyone looking to find the uber, its on my blog.

Hey. Please do a further analysis! Like I said it's basic just to see how I would have worked last year using these 5 teams/5 players (WBA, SWA, NOR, SOU and AVL as a replacement for Hull).... and there I did a little mistake - you suggested NEW instead of SWA. Sorry about that, but Davies' avg was crap anyways, and it's meant just to test the general theory. And no I didn't over complicate it with doing the 3 transfers half way.

I just checked these 5 guys' points in home games against teams below the top 7.

Please clarify the Uber once more, and the actual teams in it so that every ones clear on that!

        Cheers!

Love it, great! I would also challenge you to analyse the actual uber once the 19GWs are over. It would be a great argument to put on your blog for next season, or even the next half of the season.

Nah, post it as a new topic. It'll be way easier for people to find instead of scrolling down.

            Looking forward to your analysis!

Which is the more effective choice - Uber A at home against top 7, or Uber B away against below top 7?

I don't really get what you mean but if its does the club stand a better chance against anyone at home instead of an away games against a below seventh club then there's this to consider,

United, city, Chelsea, arsenal, spurs, Everton, Liverpool failed to score away from home a total of 23 out of 133 games or 17% and these includes the away games when a top seven plays a top seven.

City blanked 6 times as well last season which I believe won't happen this year adding to the case further.

I was just going to try and work out the answer to my question myself, but when I attempted to login to my last season's team in order to look at the Statistics tab it said "Login to Fantasy Premier League is temporarily unavailable while we perform essential maintenance." Perhaps FPL are starting to make some changes in preparation for next season's game already!

OK, I've done the calculation for the five players you mentioned, with some interesting results.

              Clyne (SOU): 14/6=2.3ppg home v top 7, 29/10=2.9 away v below top 7.
              McAuley (WBA): 25/6=4.2 home v top 7, 21/12=1.75 away v below top 7.
              R Martin (NOR): 28/6=4.7 home v top 7, 23/10=2.3 away v below top 7.
              Davies (SWA) 18/7=2.6 home v top 7, 22/11=2.0 away v below top 7.
              Lowton (AVL) 11/6=1.8 home v top 7, 30/12=2.5 away v below top 7.

So McAuley, Martin and Davies scored better at home v top 7 than away v below top 7, but Clyne and Lowton scored better away v below top 7.

Looking at these in more details, these players only achieved scores of more than 2 points against MCI, ARS, LIV and EVE. None of them scored more than 2 points MUN, CHE or TOT. And Lowton's away total was skewed by his 14 point return against STK.

So the best advice for these players last season would appear to have been to stick with the home player except when the opponents are United, Chelsea or Spurs.

Not sure I see the point in analyzing home v top 7, but away vs below top 7 is very interesting when you compare it with the home games in the same season. It goes to show how significantly better home games are for FPL:

Clyne (SOU): 2.9 away v below top 7.
                McAuley (WBA):1.75 away v below top 7.
                R Martin (NOR): 2.3 away v below top 7.
                Davies (SWA)2.0 away v below top 7.
Lowton (AVL) 2.5 away v below top 7.

SOU Clyne; 3.36 ppg at home vs below top 7
WBA McAuley; 3.66 ppg home vs below top 7
NOR R.Martin; 4.1 ppg home vs below top 7
SWA Davies; 3.36 ppg home vs below top 7
AVL Lowton; 4 ppg home vs below top 7

ah, haha true. Good point. Based on the overall stats I'd be compelled to focus only on home games for sure even though they face stiff competition.

Further analysis should be which teams have the strongest home record. Norwich, WBA, AVL are obviously superstars.

That's right. My point was that if you have these 5 players, then you should nearly always play your home players and bench your away ones, except when your home player is playing against United, Chelsea or Spurs. Note that MUN, CHE, TOT and LIV were the highest goal scorers in away matches by a significant margin.

A separate study might also be useful to determine whether another exception might be when the away matches are against the teams with the worst home records.

Results of the 5 players (Clyne, McAuley, R Martin, Davies, Lowton) playing away against the 8 teams who scored the fewest goals at home last season (QPR, SUN, STK, RDG, AVL, NEW, NOR, WIG):

                Clyne: 20/6=3.3 (19/4=4.75 v bottom 5)
                McAuley: 13/8=1.6 (12/5=2.4 v bottom 5)
                R Martin: 15/6=2.5 (11/4=2.75 v bottom 5)
                Davies: 16/7=2.3 (13/4=3.25 v bottom 5)
                Lowton: 25/7=3.6 (22/4=5.5 v bottom 5)

                away v QPR: 14/4=3.5
                away v SUN: 17/5=3.4
                away v STK: 22/4=5.5
                away v RDG: 14/4=3.5
                away v AVL: 10/4=2.5
                away v NEW: 7/4=1.75
                away v NOR: -1/3=-0.3
                away v WIG: 6/5=1.2

Conclusion: Playing one of our defenders away at QPR, SUN, STK, RDG and possibly AVL was a good option.

      Morning all,

Right done some analysis of the Uber with last season results.

      GW1: EVE/wba/SOT 2,1,6
      GW2: NOR/WHM/SUN n/a,2,2
      GW3 : FUL/SOT/SWA 6,6,2
      GW4: CAR/avl/WHM n/a,1,2
      GW5: HUL/AVL/SUN n/a,1,2
      GW6: WHM/stk/CPL n/a, 2,n/a
      GW7: AVL/SWA/car n/a,2,n/a
      GW8: WBA/SUN/stk 6,1,6
      GW9: CAR/FUL/WHM n/a,1,6
      GW10: SOT/car/CPL 1,n/a,n/a
      GW11: WHM/HUL/STK 6,n/a,2
      GW12: NOR/SUN/AVL 6,6,1
      GW13: WBA/CPL/new 2,n/a,1
      GW14: CAR/NEW/swa n/a, 6,2
      GW15: HUL/NOR/wba n/a,2,1
      GW16: SOT/SWA/hul 1,1,n/a
      GW17: AVL/EVE/HUL 1,1, n/a
      GW18: STK/FUL/new 2,6,1
      GW19: ARS/avl/whm 2,1,1

      11 CS
      16 n/a
      41 Applicable games
      total 110
      ppg 2.7

      The ppg isn't great but there are a few things to consider here;

      1. The 16 n/a games involve promoted sides who you could argue are the easiest fixtures. The 16 split is 4 homes for Hull (part of the Uber) and 12 games against promoted sides. Using last years promoted side stats, they failed to score 21/57 or 37% of the time. There are 8 home fixtures against promoted sides. Using the percentage number you can say there would be 3 clean sheets. This would give you 28 further points (2point GW for other 5) or 3.5ppg. This would raise the total ppg to 2.8ppg
      2. I haven't included any unpredictable scoring such as goals, assists, BAPS. Can you assume this would add another 0.5 onto the ppg? to gain 0.5 you would need 25 attacking points from the 49 games (2012/13 results + Promoted home games) to raise the figure by 0.5. The ppg would sit at 3.3 ppg at this stage. I also believe that 25 additional points from 49 games is an underestimate but I don't want to mess the figure up to much with unpredictable events.
      3. Of the eight remaining games, 4 are Hull fixtures playing NOR/CAR/WHM/AVL. I can't say anything for Cardiff but WHM were last, Norwich 3rd last and Villa 14th for goals scored on the road. 2 Clean sheets out of 4?
      4. These figures are using last seasons defensive records. We are all predicting an increase in returns for Southampton or Newcastle for example.

Conclusion: Having managed to conservatively estimate a ppg of 3.3 and with positive thinking I believe this could go as high as 3.8 ppg the Uber is something well worth considering. 3.3 ppg last season was the equivalent of Sagna or Shawcross. Both are likely to be priced around 5.5. 3.8ppg and the Uber is equivalent to Vidic, Agger or Azpil.

Don't forget, the other non measurable is the benefits you would get with a bigger budget for your front 8 as this is the whole point of the Uber

      Cheers 🙂

Awesome work! Get yourself a well deserved cup of coffee!

3.3 - 3.8 is a great average, and pretty similar to my findings which included BAPS/goals/assists/CS.

However - a quick reality check. I took a quick look at Azpi and GJohnson's points when they played easy games home and away (below top 7 basically) and that gave these results
        - G Johnson 4.96 ppg vs easy teames home and away (cost 6.0 start of the season)
        - Zabaleta 4.19 ppg vs easy teames home and away (cost 6.0 start of the season)
        - Azpi 4.16 ppg vs easy teames home and away (cost 6.5 start of the season)
These three guys avg 4.43ppg together.

So with a 4 - 4.5 defender you lose out on 0.63 - 1.13 points per defender = accumulated for 3 defender backline is 1.89 - 3.39 points lost on the entire defense when going for the Uber vs modest heavy hitters like Azpi/Zab/Johnson. But you have saved at least 4.5 million to spend elsewhere.

          Thanks Professor. We should get that loss and more back with the 4.5mil spent on the front 8. The Uber should allow us to get RVP/Bale/Hazard/Aguero. Quick balance format shows this;

          5, 4.5 (9.5)

          5, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5, 4 (22.5)

          12, 10, 6, 6, 4.5 (38.5)

          13.5, 11, 5 (29.5)

Even then it's hard to fit all four in so without an Uber, it has to impossible

      The Uber;
      GW 1- 7 Clubs: Hull/Newcastle/Norwich/Southampton/West Brom
      GW 8 – 11 Clubs: Norwich/Southampton/Stoke/Swansea/West Brom
      GW12-19 Clubs: Newcastle/Norwich/Stoke/Swansea/West Brom

Remember that this is the actual Uber, my analysis is simplified with just the opening 1-7 GW teams - and I did a mistake with replacing SWA for NEW somehow. Not that it matters much for the conclusion (although NEW stats were horrible last season due to injuries - did a quick check 2.55 avg for Santon home vs below top 7), but remember which teams you need to chose from.

A lot of transfers will be used ensuring you have a decent captain option for both a Saturday and a Sunday/Monday game, throws a lot of planning out the window. Good thing its a rule for the Sky game and not serious business like FPL 🙂

Is everyone entering 2 teams for the FFScout league on the sky game or is it limited to 1?

Great news with Sky throwing a huge bone into the FFS, a £1k prize is really going to keep the attention span for all with this Sky Sports Game.

Great work to Mark & co for securing the purse and whilst the Sky game had a lot of knockers last season, they do look to have improved again and hey its free, it football its fun.

Gotta be in it to win it........

I wonder if FPL will follow suit? Since being linked with FPL surely the next step will be for them to throw a bone our way as well.

May well do and the FFS's will no doubting be working feverishly behind the scenes to secure such business relations.

Metro is another game that has massively improved and enjoyed promotion on site so there could be a few options and several games with an enticing bounty on offer for the FFS mini league winners!

So with the Sky game allowing 2 teams is taking a different strategy for the second team a good idea? My first team is fairly standard - cheap at the back with lots of firepower in midfield/attack. My second team was just tinkering with a quintuple Man City defence...

I know, was just toying with it. New manager so its not clear how the defence will rotate, Mancini used to be fairly predictable with it.

I like the "Assistant Recommends" feature on Sky Fantasy Football... mine recommends ditching Van Persie and signing Aguero who is listed at just £1.7m!!!
