Sky Sports Fantasy Football 2013/14 Goes Live

As many of you will have noticed, the Sky Sports Fantasy Football game was officially launched earlier today, allowing us the opportunity for some early pre-season tinkering. We plan to analyse the player list in detail over a series of upcoming articles but for now, here’s a heads-up on some rule changes that have been introduced for 2013/14.

No Monthly Transfer Restrictions
Fantasy managers now have the opportunity to essentially wildcard a brand new team at any point during the season, providing they have an adequate number of trades left. Last season, we were, somewhat frustratingly, afforded a maximum of just five transfers per calendar month but this time round there are no restrictions – we can utilise our 40 transfers as we wish over the course of the campaign.

Save Points for Keepers
A crucial addition to the scoring system. Previously, stoppers were handed out points for clean sheets alone but their appeal is set to improve after Sky Sports decided to reward their endeavours between the sticks – for every five saves a keeper makes, he will now receive couple of bonus points; definitely something to consider when mulling over their merits. We will be adding save points bonus to our stats tables in the members area to allow analysis of how keepers would have fared over the past two seasons – we will update you when that’s available.

Captain Changes
A very significant rule change which offers the chance to accrue points from two captains in any given Gameweek. The Sky Sports game differs from the “stick or twist” scenario familiar to most Fantasy managers – you pick up double points from both your initial skipper and his armband replacement. If your first captain plays on a Saturday, you can, however, only switch the armband to someone with a match on Sunday or Monday – ie, a player with a fixture on a different day within the same Gameweek. You can change captain only once per Gameweek.

Other New Introductions
A “Shortlist” feature, similar to the Watchlist in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), allows to pencil in our potential targets for the games ahead. There’s also an Assistant Manager on hand to offer advice if required, where there will also be Awards on offer for our respective teams’ performances which could potentially lead to prizes – Sky Sports are looking to release more details later in the month.

It’s also worth noting that an app for Apple and Android devices is also available to ease those team changes whilst laden with supermarket bags. Handy.

The prizes have also be enhanced, with no less than £30,000 on offer for the winner this time around.

Scout Leagues
Thanks to our endeavours last season – which saw Fantasy Football Scout top of the Private League rankings – Sky Sports are now offering a £1,000 prize for the Fantasy manager who finishes in top spot in the FFS league this time round; enough motivation for most to get involved, surely.

The league name is “FFScout” and the code is 8000112 : we’ll get these posted in the middle column of the homepage.

Finally, we’re also considering the idea of an official money league this season. In another new feature, Sky Sports offer the option of £2, £5, £10 or £20 entry fee per person in a private league – we’ll have more on this if we decide to roll out an official Scout League. Give us your thoughts on this.

If you have any feedback on your early experiences with the game, be sure to post them in comments below. Already today we’ve passed on some issues regarding performance which have been examined and addressed due to feedback here.

As mentioned, we’ll be rolling out regular articles in the pre-season to guide your early decision making, including an appraisal of the player list and some position by position analysis.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Maybe it's because getting Hart for the DGW late last season worked so well for me, but I wanted to get Cech for Chelsea's DGW1. I don't trust any of the other Chelsea defenders to start both games.
The problem is that the numbers just don't work. To go from a team with Cech to a team that I want gw2 onwards means multiple hits, something that I want to avoid. It makes me consider planning to use a wc in gw2, a la SpiderM4tt.

To revisit once the DGW is confirmed, and the prices are more than speculation.

No, but I'm operating under the assumption that there will be a dgw1 for Chelsea, like kast year.
I have to occupy myself somehow until the season starts...

I played the Sky game last year, and I'm living in Busan, South Korea. I had no problems registering a team. I didn't win a prize though....I'd have been mightily pissed off if I'd won and then told I couldn't collect!

I'll try to set up a team nearer Kick-off day and see if it works. I can use a proxy server no problem, but maybe I can just spend more time on FPL instead.
As an aside....it pisses me right off when UK companies (BBC, Sky etc) say "You can see us on the World Wide Web!", when what they mean is the "British Wide Web"

it surely is frustrating, but it's a quagmire of rights issues attached.. apparently it costs a lot more to show contents abroad (unless they own the productions themselves - vis a vis having hired a production company)

I wonder what %age of users are from outside the UK. This article is a huge tease. This game is crap btw, see my comments on page 1. It's a blessing in disguise not being able to play.

Sheep - totally agree, the Sky game is crap. Guess the only reason they open so early is scoop up bored people waiting for the real game to open.

Re- proxy address, if anyone wants one the i recommend expatshield, just have a good ad blocker and don't run anything else at the same time.

I'm sure Mark and the "inner circle" knows/have an idea when it will open. Remember FFS and FPL started working closely together last year when "the scout" started to write articles for FPL.

FFS would need to know when to be ready with those articles.

Not that we would be let in on their little secret off course.

Mark is to obsessed with the no 2 FPL ID number.

Actually, the number of hulks probably doesn't mean that someone will turn into a Mod. Actually, your quality of posts doesn't determine whether you have the right sense to judge what is wrong and what is right.

That said, Tina might get to Level 2 soon - that will put more weightage on her upvotes and downvotes. I'm not sure, but I assume that a Level 2 poster need not necessarily be a Mod.

Then I put my faith in EVS to mention me in his scoutcast. He opted to jump in bed with a certain Aussie moderator 😥

I declined to take Granville up on his offer to join the SA ICC team in order to get mentioned on the scoutcast. It was having to much fun on the Windies islands.

The JPT final I drew once and then won twice. What a debacle that was. Poor Stilicho, he was wayyy over his head in thinking he could organize a tournament of that magnitude.

Looked at it yesterday and to be honest with you that ain't a lot different to what I came up wth. I had Santi in MF instead of Mirralas and had to go with Carroll instead of Kun.

Had Rat, McShane and Dawson in defence.

If ye want Bale, Haz/Mata and RVP then you pretty much can't deviate much from that team you've picked.

That game is not for me this season.

Anyone on here reckon that the 3 teams that all went down will come straight back up again and the 3 teams that came up will all go straight back down?

Wonder what the odds are on that happening?

Law of averages says it has to happen some time. Three promoted teams all went straight back down in 1997/8 but not sure if the reverse has ever happened yet.

      Betfair Market has

      CPL 1.55, Hull 1.70, Cardiff 3.00, QPR 3.00, Reading 3.45, Wigan 4.60

That sounds insane, i would imagine the odds of one of the weaker teams getting relegated are already quite high, so to make it 3 specific teams, while choosing 3 specific teams to be promoted, i would be SHOCKED if it's less than 150 to 1. I could see Redknapp turning it around with QPR, and possibly Wigan, but i doubt Reading will. But i'm just saying i could see QPR or Wigan getting back, but i would still be surprised if even one made it back after QPR's horrendous season and Wigan losing Martinez

      52/1 that Qpr/Wigan/Reading gets promoted
      5.7/1 that hull/qpr/cardiff drop down

Put all of that in a massive multiple bet....and you get....

Anyone else got a tad bit more excited about Stoke's potential for next season after the Muniesa signing? I have to say that even though he obviously isn't the type to score goals or give assists, and actually isn't that experienced to instantly improve the defense, i have a little more faith in Hughes now after what i consider to be an excellent signing. I've always been a fan of Muniesa; Hughes has caught my attention now

Honestly, i was planning to stay away from Stoke D because their bound to concede more when a manager was fired for not getting the team to score enough. There's going to be a balance eventually but i can't see them getting clean sheets early in the season unless Hughes really doesn't care about what the fans and management want. After this signing, i'm still staying away from defense, i'm just more interested in the team as a whole now; Adam is definitely on my watch list

Well Hughes has been talking about how he sees Adam as being an important player. And in the first 6 GW's, Stoke still have 2 or 3 good games so if Adam comes in at under 6 mil, i would consider getting him for my 5th midfield spot.

What p*ssed me off last season was that when ever I log into my FPl team the players would be different positions then the previous log on.

I like order in my life, so if i have Rvp at the bottom left striker position then that's where he needs to stay until I decide differently.

Don't be so sure, not only is Chelsea's defense quite weak now in my opinion (Terry hasn't been doing well, Cahill is far from world class), they also don't have the right defensive midfielders, so unless there are some signings, i won't be getting Chelsea defenders (because of how expensive they'd be with people anticipating clean sheets)

You did well on your tennis tips. Can't remember the other 2 but you are probably right.

          Lisicki or Radwanska?

other day i said Radwanska,Bartoli and Liskicki and that was way too easy

            though match to call

think i'll play 1st set over 9.5 gems

hopefully radwanska will win it cause of my pre tournament bet

those 2 are 2 of my favorite tennis players

Li should have won the 1st set, served an ace & didn't challenge. 😡
Radwanska played great defending tennis & waited for Li's mistakes.

for exacly that reason i consider radwanska as the best tennis player

she is mentaly so strong and when you think that she has lost set and match she will turn things over like she always do

shame that she lives in era with likes of Shaparopva,Azarenka and Williams (they are just too strong for her)

but now she have golden oportunuty to win Slam

Lisicki is brillinat but she likes making silly errors and radwanska could take adventage of that

if you seen match against Keys, that was very impressive

young american has 68winners and radwanska still managed to beat her

When they set up the FPL prices, do they also look at the fixtures list? Because if they do, Bale is going to be ridiculously expense. I was thinking of not getting Bale because his price would be high and he might struggle to maintain last seasons standards, at least at the beginning of the year (even Cristiano had a bit of a slump in the 08-09 season after his crazy 07-08 season), but now with these early fixtures, i don't think its an option not to get him, which makes me think his price is going to be sky high.

Pretty sure they just use numbers, minutes played in a formula. Comparing to Gerrard at his best FPL wise, Bale should be 12.5.

There's more to it than that. They try to make it balanced based on the supply of other players. I very much doubt Bale will be near that high.

If he scored similar number to last season, anything less is a bargain. Have a look at Yaya, similar numbers, minutes & will start at 8 again imo. Don't believe in this balance etc. Tevez was a bargain due to his previous short season. Why would FPL want to make the game that easy to balance it? Gerrard's best season FPL wise was 08/09 where he got 216 in 2623 minutes & finished at 12.4. The next season he started at 12.5 at least as he ended that season at 12.5 & only got 159 points where price rises & falls were slowed down compared to now.

Well my issue is that i wouldn't get Bale at 12.5 if he had an okay set of fixtures, but i have no choice now because of early season games, which probably means almost everyone is going to pounce on him, which translates to a price increase early in the season. That's what makes me think that they might consider the fixtures because they'd like to see as little fluctuations in price as possible.

If everyone gets him in GW1, no price rises. Don't think fixtures are used for the pricing. Chelsea players would be more expensive due to the expected DGW if that were the case.

Well i suspect that a lot will get him for GW1 but if he even does remotely well in that game, then everyone will pounce and that's when his price would increase if his price allows people to bring him in. That's what worries me about his price starting out highly. The difference between him and Chelsea players though is that people will want to dump out Chelsea players after the first GW so if you used fixtures to help in pricing players, then i would price them a little lower than expected so people are tempted to keep them in. Strange, i know, but that's what i think
