Scout Report – Paulinho

Andre Villas-Boas made his first foray into the summer transfer market late last week by recruiting midfielder Paulinho from Brazilian club Corinthians. A long-term target of the north London side, the 24-year-old arrives for a reported fee of £17m, with Spurs allegedly beating off the likes of Real Madrid and Inter Milan in the race for his signature:

After finally sealing the switch to White Hart Lane, Paulinho spoke of his relief during an interview with the club’s official website on Saturday afternoon:

“First, I want to thank Tottenham for believing in me. I am very happy and excited to have joined Spurs. It’s a huge pleasure for my career to be at a club as big as Tottenham. I know it will be a huge challenge but I think I can help all my colleagues to succeed and give a lot of happiness to the supporters.”

The History

A product of the Pão de Açúcar youth academy in his native Brazil, Paulinho’s failure to establish himself as a first-team pick resulted in a move to Latvian outfit FC Vilnius back in 2006. Having notched five times in 38 appearances over a couple of seasons, he was snapped up by Polish club LKS Lodz but returned to his homeland after a season of controversy – mainly fielded as a right-back, he was often subjected to racist abuse and re-joined his first club in 2008.

Back at Pão de Açúcar, Paulinho racked up eight goals in 39 appearances but once again failed to convince the club of his worth and was sold to Brazilian second division side Bragantino after a single season. Six strikes in 28 matches persuaded Corinthians to splash the cash in 2010 and afforded the midfielder a chance to finally settle; while four goals and an assist in 27 games hints at a tentative opening year, he followed that up with 16 goals and 12 assists in 59 matches before Villas-Boas made his move.

On the international stage, Paulinho has notched five times in 17 matches for Brazil and with two goals in four appearances in the recent Confederations Cup tournament, he was named third best player in the competition behind Neymar and Andres Iniesta.

The Prospects

Although he’s been billed as “a box-to-box” midfielder, Paulinho will bring more than mere industry to the Tottenham engine room. His driving runs from deep and ball-winning abilities in the centre of the park are allied with plenty creative endeavour and with a keen eye for goal; his addition to a central midfield that already possesses Sandro and Mousa Dembele looks a significant move from Villas-Boas.

Having utilised a 4-2-3-1 for most of last season, Spurs may now be primed for a switch to Villas-Boas’ preferred 4-3-3 formation next time round – a scenario that may well have implications from a Fantasy perspective. While a role in “the hole” allowed Gareth Bale to excel in a central spot in 2012/13, the Welshman would surely be forced back onto the flank in such a system, with the Spurs boss relying on the dynamism of Paulinho, Sandro and Dembele to break up opponents’ attacks and hit quickly on the counter.

With the likes of Tom Huddlestone and Scott Parker linked with moves away, it’s clear Villas-Boas plans to bolster his first-team options – it may well transpire that 4-3-3 becomes the default, then, with a switch to 4-2-3-1 more a “Plan B” when a tactical rethink is required mid-match. Certainly, having been acquired for a club-record fee, Paulinho looks key to Villas-Boas’ approach next time out – his attacking sensibilities make the new man one to watch if he’s fielded as the most advanced of the middle three but it’s his possible impact on Bale’s starting position (and subsequent Fantasy points potential) that may well be the most crucial aspect of his acquisition.

Intriguingly, Paulinho’s ever-improving eye for goal has recently led former Argentina legend Juan Roman Riquelme to suggest he’s more than similar to a certain Frank Lampard. The Spurs new boy went on to admit:

“This comparison is a responsibility I will take, I will not run away from it. Lampard is a great player not only for Chelsea but world football. I intend to follow in his footsteps as he is a very professional guy. David Luiz always speaks of him on international duty. I’ve always looked at what Lampard does and, to me, he is a phenomenon – the way he hits the ball, what positions he takes up. He really is incredible.”

Expected to come in around the mid-price mark in Fantasy games – a cost of 7.5 seems likely – Paulinho’s progress will be keenly watched over Tottenham’s pre-season schedule. With Swansea, Norwich, West Ham and Hull rolling up to the Lane by Gameweek 9, in addition to trips to Palace, Cardiff and Villa, Spurs have the platform to hit the ground running as Villas-Boas looks to improve upon last season’s fifth place finish. While Bale will no doubt garner the pre-season attention, the new boy also has the class to prove a canny acquisition for Spurs and Fantasy managers alike.

    Hello campers 😛

Appreciate this isn't much, but here's a useful link for fixtures (that can be sorted by competition etc).

Just used it for planning some trips & holidays etc. Still not exact (games will be moved to Sunday & Monday etc), but decent for starters.

City need an outlet in wide areas as they were relying too heavily on Silva unlocking the defence. It meant they were playing far too narrow and were unable to stretch the opposition enough to play through them. Navas has so much pace and a direct style of play which City need. They could do with someone on the other flank aswell.

That's true. Really wasn't interested in keeping his full squad involved particularly the younger players and his tactics were so limited.

So many games last season you could see a case for Sinclair to be given some game time but it never happen.

Do you think Pellegrini will favour foreign players over British ones?

I think he'll favour the better players, and many of those will be Spanish. Again it all depends on FFP and whether that becomes a reality, or will City just live in the short term as they have been doing. They are embarking on a huge facility project build around their stadium with the ultimate aim to bring up their own players and be far more self sufficient. This is the holistic approach the owners were talking about when they sacked Mancini.

It really irks me when I see people slagging off Mancini for some reason.

He is not the greatest manager of all time but to pull a bunch of journeymen and mercenaries together to win the EPL was an amazing achievement imo. He did not sign a lot of the trouble makers he was left with (he did sign balo of course 😳 ) so I think it is slightly unfair of people to criticise his man management. You had one of the best in business down the road at UTD and he fell out with plenty of players and had plenty of players doing daft things but for some reason the media always seem to have given him an easier ride.

With regard to youth Mancini was hardly ever in such a comfortable position to give youth a chance when getting second in EPL was a sacking offence? (I know he lost the cup final which he shouldn't have but I think by the time the cup final came around his position was completely undermined and the players knew it). He did give Richards, Nastasic, Balotelli, Hart all fair cracks at first team football and for people to think he should be giving the likes of Sinclair a run is ridiculous. Would Sinclair get in the utd team? no chance imo.

Last season he was looking to strengthen their attacking options which he rightly identified as being limited and the people behind the scenes who didn't make it happen are the ones that should be carrying the can imo. If he had got RVP and or Hazard I think things would have been a lot different.

As I say he was not the best in the world (far from it) but I think he did a more than credible job there and doesn't deserve to be pilloried as he is.

I know what is that all about? Dragging out negotiations for months just to try and squeeze a couple of million out of the deal. It's more important you get your squad together early doors and get pre season done as a group than having playing joining days before the new season kicks off.

Aubameyang looks like a good signing. Bags of potential.

Yes. Lewandowski will stay at Dortmund until the end of this season and then almost definitely join Bayern in the summer of 2014.

All of which makes Bayern's sale of Gomez today a little risky for this season, but we'll see.

    Idle dribble and speculation

Thinking that they all are about the same price FPL wise (8 or less)
Who do You rate to have the most FPL points at the end of the season?

    Navas
    Paulinho
    Coutinho
    Thiago

Had figured Coutinho for my mid priced midfielder spot but now thinking its a tossup.
Although with Bale and Hazarrr being must haves 8 might be too much to afford for third mid spot.

In order of highest to lowest:

Coutino - I'd expect to be in the top 5.

Paulinho - if AVB plays 4-3-3 I'd expect him to be firmly in the top 10

Thiago - will 'do a Modric' and assist the assist-er, so his FPL points will never replicate how well he plays unless BAPS are overhauled.

Navas - not a proven goal-scorer, competition for his position, and wingers aren't really in any more. Unless the 'Engineer' discovers the next evolution in formation I'd expect nothing more than the odd assist.

Why are so many people keen on Hazard rather than Mata last year even with Mata's greater consistency and having more pts at the end of the season.

I understand that Hazard may secure more penalties as I doubt Lampard will start most games at the age of 35 however in open play Mata appears to be instrumental in orchestrating Chelsea's attack. So for me personally I remain content with picking Mata over Hazard.

I never really buy into this 'after tournament rest' malarkey, the Confed Cup has been over a while now and he's a professional athlete, how much rest does he actually need? With over a month before GW1 I can't see fatigue being a problem for someone like Mata.

Just because it's Hazards second season does not necessarily mean he'll perform better and you could say the same for Mata who's gaining experience and edging towards his prime year by year. Sure Hazard is more explosive but I prefer consistency over explosiveness. Mata has overperformed? He played exceptionally well throughout the season and helped unlock the opposition defence time and time again through intelligent movement and passes. Not to mention his threatening set peices.

Yea I'll give Hazard the advantages of being explosive over the short term such as a dgw aswell as securing penalties but in the medium to long term I think Mata is a clear winner with his heavy involvement in set peices aswell as open play.

Hello all, been a while and pleased pesky 'off-season' nearing an end. Marvellous refresh of the site, well done team FFS.

Just printed off some GK rotation analysis (will read later this week) but sorely tempted this season to forsake for a uber-No1, my Cech mate spring to mind (poss early DGW + Special1 likes a solid Def for plenty CS).

Paulinho exciting signing but must put my own bias to one side, Bale's a must and double Spurs Mid sounds... well, wrong. Kone at EVE looks very tempting, price dependent of course. Great worker as well as poacher, can see him finishing a few Baines crosses, both this pair will be in my thinking.

Bent at the right club could be great value (FUL, NEW?), and intrigued by Kags again, esp if Roon-Shrek offs it. Wally or Higuin a tough call (if Gooners ever sign the Argy), but not biting on Anelka. Loads more transfers to come, let's hope game opens before many of the inter-Prem moves, which could create some very interesting pricing anomalies.

I second the anomalies hope. It might make squad selection a little easier if we can pick up a few unintentional bargains.

Really not sure what to make of the stats behind Paulinho. Scoring roughly once in 5 in the Latvian league and then playing at the back in Poland as well as being deemed surplus to requirements by the same Brazilian club twice puts me off. His step up to the Brazilian top flight and subsequent attacking returns in roughly every 2 games though demands attention. He did look very handy in the Confederations cup as well. This report's got me concerned about Bale now too. Not too worried as I think he's good enough to succeed regardless of what system he's put in...

Poseidon, I wouldn't sweat over Bale's contribution this season. AVB's 4-3-3 would involve a fluid front three, Bale will not be isolated on the wing, but will have the freedom to find space across the forward area. This would also apply to Villa (if he signs), it's not about two wingers and a forward, more three interchanging front ;players able to assist/score from various areas.

Remember back to Man Utd days with Roon-Shrek/Ronnie/The Jackel, neither played anywhere particularly, they dove-tailed with each other to impressive effect (the days when Man Utd could score from more than one player - RvP!). It's about keeping defenders confused, causig CB/FBs problems about who to pick without getting dragged all over the pitch.

Sadly, why I really quite liked the idea of Aubemeyang as third pacey attacker. Hey ho. But I'll say it plainly, right up front... Bale will score roughly as many Prem goals this season as last, maybe more, but I expect big improvement on assists. Bale = 200+ FPL pts 20-13/14

Thanks Frazek. Call me fickle but I'm now more sold on Bale than ever. He reminded me of Ronaldo a lot towards the end of last season so if he's to adopt a similar role too - I'm in. With his pace, counter attacking football should really be right up his street anyway. Now that Villa's no longer available, I wonder if he might even play in the middle of the fluid front three. Pretty mouth watering either way.

Paulinho sounds like he would be a good choice in the sky game - be interesting to see his price in that one. not so sure about FPL especially if bale is still at tottenham, he'll be the only spurs player you need

Arsenal are one of the most painful clubs to follow through a transfer window, always a large amount of 'possibilities' without anything actually coming to fruition.

Still it's only being reported on one blog so who knows...

I'm interested to see how Kone's arrival will affect Mirallas' prospects.
Hopefully not too much as the latter should be able to continue unaffected if Kone is the lone wolf up front. I can certainly see Everton's opening fixtures of nor, WBA car resulting in some unexpected bonanzas as Martinez is clearly very motivated.

It will obviously improve Mirallas' prospects - atleast his assist potential.

After all, Anichebe struggled to get to the end of most of the crosses coming from Mirallas, Baines and Coleman, Kone, I hope, will do better than him at Everton.

4-2-3-1 > 4-3-3 would, as the article says, push Bale wide again and make Paulinho more interesting but he's not the only one. Dembele, who played CDM last season, has just as much box to box potential as anybody else at Spurs. Dembele was a bit of an FPL flop last season playing at CDM, despite playing really well on the pitch, so what might his price be ?

Think Dembele just needs to told time and time again to have a few more shots. He has a decent enough one on him but doesn't seem to like shooting. Until he starts doing that I don't really see him as an option.
