Scout Report – Emanuele Giaccherini

Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio’s summer spending spree continued yesterday with the capture of Emanuele Giaccherini from Italian champions Juventus. The 28-year-old arrives on Wearside in a four-year deal reported to be in the region of £6.5m and is the ninth new player to sign up at the Stadium of Light over the close season as Di Canio attempts to improve upon last term’s seventeenth place finish:

Upon completion of the deal, the new boy admitted to the Italian media that next year’s World Cup in Brazil played a key part in the move, as he looks to nail down a regular role on Wearside:

“I am full of enthusiasm and want to do good things as part of this adventure. I want to thank [Juventus] coach Antonio Conte. In the last two years he has given me the possibility to shine and make a name for myself here. A big part of my success is down to him. I thank him for that and will do so personally in the next few days. I have got into the national team now and I want to stay there. I will do everything for that. I hope this new adventure can push me to the World Cup. I will do my best playing in the English championship, which is the best in the world. Yesterday I spoke with Paolo Di Canio. For me, due to the fact that I don’t know the language, he will be a fundamental reference point, especially on the field.”

The History

Giaccherini’s career began in the 2003-04 campaign, where he notched 15 times for Cesena’s youth team. Over the next four seasons he was farmed out on loan to lower tier clubs Forli, Bellaria Igea and Pavia but his development seemed to stall, with just 13 goals scored over 87 matches for the three sides. Returning to his parent club in time for the 2008-09 season, Giaccherini helped Cesena rise through the divisions and eventually settle in Serie A, with 20 goals and four assists over 97 appearances.

His displays subsequently saw Juventus come calling in August 2011. Over his two seasons with the “Old Lady”, Giaccherini featured 40 times (with 21 of those appearances arriving off the bench) and produced four goals and six assists as the club won back-to-back league titles. He’s also featured 14 times for the Italian national side, scoring twice and providing a trio of assists.

The Prospects

A versatile campaigner, Giaccherini offers options on both wings in addition to through the middle. While the former Juventus man is more than capable of flourishing in “the hole”, Di Canio’s acquisition of Jozy Altidore suggests the Black Cats boss is looking to field a front two, with the US international expected to partner Steven Fletcher up top for Sunderland next season.

Standing just five foot five, Giaccherini is an archetypal wideman, with his trickery and directness in possession likely to torment many a full-back in the season ahead. Furthermore, he will bring a much-needed creativity to the Black Cats’ ranks – statistics show he provided a “key pass” at a rate superior to any Juventus team mate last term.

Certainly, regular game time seems secure for the new boy. Di Canio looked unconvinced by James McClean as a first-team option, with Giaccherini perhaps set to be handed the role on the Sunderland left, with either Adam Johnson or Stephane Sessegnon selected on the opposite flank. Yet to be added to any of the Fantasy games, a price of 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) looks on the cards, mirroring the cost of both Johnson and Sessegnon.

While there’s no doubt Giaccherini’s transfer is something of a coup for the Wearsiders, the initial schedule is likely to be enough of a deterrent to prevent any real bandwagon picking up in pace. Granted, an opening day home clash with Fulham, allied with a Gameweek 3 trip to Palace, has the potential for points but beyond that, a run of games which pits the Black Cats against Arsenal, Liverpool, United, City, Chelsea and Spurs in six of seven home fixtures between Gameweeks 4 and 15 is likely to dissuade even the most optimistic of Black Cats fan from investing from the off, allowing the little Italian time to settle before we consider splashing out on his services.

He has stated its more ethical than religious. Muslims still use money, and still use loans like normal people, whether it is personal or business, but what Wonga do is pretty wrong. Just gets people in more trouble and Newcastle support this so I kinda stand with Cisse on this.

Good on him though; Wonga et al are truly horrendous companies, I can't believe such loan-sharking is actually legal. Not surprised Newcastle don't mind taking money from them with Ashley in charge though. He already sold part of the cluc's soul with the ridiculous St James' Park renaming

Ashley replaced the name of one of the most historic grounds in England with an advertisement for his own drossy sports outlet. It's pretty ruthless captialism if nothing else. Sure, they have to find ways to compete, but I bet most Geordies would rather retain their proud heritage then completely sell out for a few more million a year.

you've not explained how you're going to feed your children...any answer that fails to address this problem is worth diddly-squat

lets say the offer is you borrow £20 this week and pay back £30 next week

what if she had 3 children one of whom was 6 months old?

why don't you set up Bank of PPSR?...your business plan is to lend short-term cash to people in a crisis...you charge 25% APR...good luck paying your debt collectors!!!

the high-street banks don't offer the service these people need...that's the problem...and if you made Wonga's business plan illegal people would just resort to illegal loan sharks who'd treat them even worse

that's why there's no support from the government for the action you're proposing...while your head is buried in the Guardian they have to deal with real-world problems

    Three little things

    a) Theo's points total likely to be significantly better than Giroud's to warrant paying 1 million more for Theo?
    b) Aguero's points total likely to be significantly better than Silva's to warrant 2 million more
    c) RvP likely to outscore Kagawa by enough to warrant 6 million more?

That United midfield is bargain city if one of them gets firing.

      It's not about that.

It's about captaincy. You're talking about picking someone who you'd be confident giving the captain's armband on a given week when fixtures and form align.

That's the value of RVP. Having someone like him who will deliver when you need him to can singlehandedly save a gameweek. That's why we don't use autoselect to pick all 7.5m players. We need the big hitters for captain.

    Oh RVP 😮

Judging by the RMT's seems many (most) on here are going without. Certainly understand that and makes for a more balanced team. However for me the one nagging issue is how to get him if he starts firing from GW1.

Ditching him is easy and you have the choice of literally any striker (plus cash) if he looks to be off the boil for whatever reason. Trying to wedge a 14m player into a team with 0.5m in the bank, forget it.

Therefore today I'm massively swinging in favour of starting with him 😕

I´m finding difficult to go with him and have a balanced team especially as I think Bale will be more essential to own than RvP.

Agreed, but the other issue is ownership, currently around 33% I believe. if he starts fast (and are without him), then it'll be a long season long slog climbing the ranks. If he doesn't at least you know many are in the same boat and overall rank shouldn't take too much of a hit.

Plus if he fails to deliver in those first 2 GWs it´ll give massive advantage for those who choose to go without him, I´m gladly taking that risk... I think.

I think many plan to WC after GW3 and get him in..he doesn't have the best fixtures in the beginning...(not that he cares though)....but there are other good captain choices for those weeks(GW1: HAzard (dgw), GW2:Aguero(cardiff) GW3:Aguero(HULL)

GW4 you want RvP home to crystal palace....so therefore i am going to WC before that week..

This is probably my other option, an early WC. Promised myself I wouldn't do it again (GW3 last season, GW2 season before), however looks almost inevitable.....

Not only that but he's the biggest (C) choice in the game. People going with cheaper forwards are going to have trouble when there biggest (C) choice up top is Sturridge and RVP is at home to Hull!

Squeeze him in if you can, It's going to be hard when his price is 14.1 after GW1

Hey fellas, good to see all the chat back on here!

Anyone considering picking a team for the first 7 gameweeks only, then wildcarding during the international break?

Would allow a way to get RVP back in if you chose to go without him, and should give you a good start to the season,

Assuming no DGW do you take Hazard or Theo, only room for 1 as I'm now fairly convinced that Silva should be the City cover of choice due to striker rotation and Aguero's price

    Bale Walcott Silva Hazard

I'm sure this will die down when new strikers are announced...

I think this is going to be a better year for defenders pts. Far more likely to get bonus. Trouble with so many 4m defenders is you have no wiggle room...also they could lose value. I'd look to upping at least one to 4.5m...lots of great options in that bracket...less in the 4m category.
