Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Mid-Price Defenders

We roll out our third article on this season’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) player list this afternoon. Having assessed the Goalkeepers and Budget Defenders, we now cast an eye over the mid-price backline options, focussing on those players in the 5.0 to 5.5 bracket.

FPL’s decision to price Arsenal’s defence under 6.0 looks to offer Fantasy managers strong value next season. The Gunners conceded just 37 times in 2012/13 – the second best backline in the league – with Per Mertesacker once again looking the most secure option under Arsene Wenger. The German registered 135 points last season and with three goals to his name, seems the Gunners’ first-choice central defender; he would have ended last term as fourth highest defender in the new Bonus Points System, had it been implemented. Laurent Koscielny may transpire to be a viable alternative, though – he ousted Thomas Vermaelen from the picture as the season unfolded and scored twice in 20 starts over an injury-hit season. Although Wenger still looks to have faith in Bacary Sagna as a first-choice right-back, question marks hang over the other side of the Arsenal defence, with neither Kieran Gibbs or Nacho Monreal assured of starts.

Two goals and four assists sum up Matt Lowton’s attacking potential for Villa but with cheaper alternatives in Paul Lambert’s backline, it’s difficult to justify splashing the cash (5.0) on the raiding right-back, bearing in mind his side kept a mere five clean sheets in 2012/13. Seamus Coleman has the potential to be one of the bargains of the season under new Everton boss Roberto Martinez. If, as expected, he’s utilised on the right of midfield in a 3-4-3, the 5.0 priced Republic of Ireland international will be snapped up for his attacking potential alone and should be a highly sought-after Fantasy commodity in 2013/14. Staying on the subject of right-backs, Fulham’s Sascha Riether will be looking to replicate a debut season at the Cottage which harvested a goal and six assists. At 5.0, though, he is less friendly on the budget than team mate Fernando Amorebieta, at 4.5.

Jamie Carragher’s retirement is likely to afford Fantasy managers a strong mid-price Liverpool alternative next time out. Both Kolo Toure (5.0) and Martin Skrtel (5.5) are vying for the role alongside Daniel Agger – if the Ivorian gets the nod, he’ll be snapped up by Fantasy managers aplenty as a route into a backline that registered 16 clean sheets last season. Bearing in mind he’d also be cheaper than both Liverpool’s keepers and Toure has the potential to be a significant asset over 2013/14 if he forces his way past Skrtel in the Reds’ pecking order.

Matija Nastasic remains under the 6.0 mark at City. The young Serbian has been priced at 5.5 and is seen as the ideal partner for Vincent Kompany in Manuel Pellegrini’s defence – the new manager’s intentions are yet unclear, though, and with a more expansive style of play expected, City may struggle to deliver the same level of resilience which has produced 18, 17 and 18 clean sheets over the previous three seasons. The likes of Micah Richards and Joleon Lescott are similarly priced but may struggle for regular game time by comparison, with Nastasic looking the most secure of City’s mid-price options under the Chilean.

Over at Old Trafford, both Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans will set you back 5.5 but, again, there remains uncertainty over David Moyes’ preferred starters at the back for United. Evans produced three goals and a pair of assists in just 23 appearances last time out, though, and if he can finally cement a role as a regular under the new regime, the Northern Ireland centre-half has the attacking edge over his team-mate.

With a goal and four assists to his name last season, Davide Santon was the most attacking of any Newcastle defender. If he can mirror his 2012/13 displays, the Italian looks the pick of Newcastle’s 5.0 priced defenders but with cheaper options elsewhere in Alan Pardew’s back-four, the Italian could struggle for our attentions. Certainly, there’s no doubting the ability of Mathieu Debuchy, who’ll be looking to improve upon a return of a single assists in 14 appearances since joining up at St James’ Park in January.

Seb Bassong and Russell Martin will both set you back 5.0 as a route into a Norwich defence that produced 10 clean sheets in the season gone by. While Bassong looks nailed-on at centre-half, with Steven Whittaker providing competition for Martin’s right-back berth, Michael Turner’s 4.5 price tag plays a part in how we assess the Canaries. Considering all three notched three times last term, Turner looks the best value of the trio.

The Stoke defence all come in at mid-price after a season which saw them concede just 45 times – only two more goals against than United. With Tony Pulis gone, however, there’s a feeling they will struggle to keep out their opponents and as new boss Mark Hughes prepares to go on the attack, the Potters may not offer the same value we’ve come to expect. New boy Erik Pieters (5.0) will be tasked with bombing forward down the left and is cheaper than central defensive pairing Robert Huth and Ryan Shawcross, at 5.5 apiece.

Angel Rangel’s three goals and an assist in 2012/13 have persuaded FPL to elevate the Swansea right-back to 5.5 – the priciest option of any in Michael Laudrup’ backline. Ashley Williams and Chico should guarantee starts in the centre of defence at 5.0 apiece. Intriguingly, Williams’ displays would have seen him finish as second top defender (and fourth overall) in the new Bonus Points System, were it implemented last season – the fact he failed to produce any goals or assists highlights its not all about attacking contribution. Ben Davies’ game time looks anything but secure now that Neil Taylor is back in contention. With Michel Vorm similarly priced between the sticks, the Dutchman’s save point potential and propensity for stopping spot-kicks may well make him the best Swansea option but with United Spurs and Liverpool in the opening four Gameweeks, faith in the Swans defence is understandably diminished from the off.

Fit-again Younes Kaboul is the most intriguing option at the back for Tottenham. Coming in at 5.0, the Frenchman started Gameweek 1 last year but failed to play again due to injury – he is favourite to get the nod as Jan Vertonghen’s central defensive partner, with his pace crucial to Spurs’ high defensive line, though there’s the possibility Andre Villas-Boas may utilise rotate Michael Dawson and Steve Caulker (both 5.0) in order to maintain the trio’s fitness. Benoit Assou-Ekotto (5.5) may remain in the driving seat for the left-back role – the Cameroon international has competition from Danny Rose but FPL’s decision to classify the latter as a midfielder virtually kills his Fantasy appeal.

Gareth McAuley is the priciest option at the back for West Brom. The centre-half comes in at 5.5 after racking up three goals and three assists last season but despite playing six more games than Ben Foster, outscored the keeper by just eight points in FPL. Foster, at 5.0, is likely to prove better value due to save points, while the likes of Liam Ridgewell and Jonas Olsson also mirror the keeper’s cost. At West Ham, Joey O’Brien has rocketed from 4.0 to 5.5 this season – the most expensive defender on offer under Sam Allardyce. Razvan Rat, at 5.0, looks more secure at left-back but with James Collins offering a 4.5 priced route into a backline with 11 clean sheets in 2012/13, many may be content with the former Villa man instead.

Unlike many other top teams who usually have 1-2 main outputs of fantasy returns, City last season was very frustrating (bar Tevez early on), with many random players getting in on the point hauls.

So do the imminent arrival(s) of Jovetic and possibly Negredo make Aguero a better or worse pick?

Do you guys believe it will:

    A) Lead to more created chances for Aguero
    B) Diminish his fantasy output as he will be splitting fantasy points with many attackers.

Why would Aguero's output decrease and Silva's increase?

I think with more and more City attackers coming in, it decreases the appeal of attackers altogether, unfortunately.

For one, I think Silva's on set-pieces and corners, correct me if I'm wrong. Also, right now, we have no idea where Negredo and Jovetic (even Aguero) would fit in Pellegrini's plans but I would say Silva would be nailed on.

Leaning towards A. Aguero is a very talented lad (possibly world class), as shown by his 1st season in the league. Perhaps in behind might even suit him better.

      hard to tell though.

With RVP being 14.0mil there will be a lot of 'hoping' that Aguero's output will increase. I'm 60-40 in the positive.

I wonder if Dzeko and Nasri will become good buddies sharing so much time on the bench this season...

    Long, rambling, incoherent post alert-

I am so bored at work I thought I would pen my thought on teams and acknowledge the thinking of others which I’m trying hard to ignore. Yes, at the moment, I want Bale and RVP.

    Arsenal-
I am going for Mertsaker. At 5.5 he seems undervalued and would be my one ‘good’ defender.
Ignoring Walcott for now but may be bitten by this. Wilshire is my dark horse. Konch is a viable alternative for Mert. Left back is a minefield. Forwards, I expect them to buy so wait and see, don’t like Giroud. Jenkinson a steal if Sagna discovered as not a footballer.

    Aston Villa-
A tough start fixture wise. Watching Wiemann for later, cheap defenders like Vlaar also being watched. Benteke to Spurs would be interesting. Tonev talk has died down. Bent if he moves.

    Cardiff-
When I first got to see the price list this year in went Bellamy. 5.5 for a mid who is a stiker. Sense (?) has now come over me and hes out. Too old, not enough starts and for my 5th mid too much cash? May grab a defender if desperate for a 4.0. The 5.5 striker is also an option over Anelka. Cardiff fans like Kim

    Chelsea-
The potential double and possible Rooney move leave many ? Personally I’d love Rooney to move, FF wise. For now Hazard is in. Lampard at 8 is interesting me a bit. Defense, I only play one ‘good’ defender (Mert for now)but guess Asp is the one to go for. Would love Lukaku to get loaned again

    Crystal Palace
I’m in the group getting too excited by 4.5 Thomas. Maybe add a defender for cheap bench man. That’s about it.

    Everton-
Seems to be a collective semi over Coleman. Not sold yet. Alcaraz a bargain if starting. Miralles looks value. Watching Kone

    Fulham-
Watching Amorbieta, 4.5 could be a steal. Gk is a quality ‘real life’ player, not so interested FF wise. Kac at 5.0 is good if starting. Berba is Berba, will wait for now though

    Hull-
    A cheap defender and/or a punt on a 5.0 mid at most.

    Liverpool-
Don’t have any in my team right now. Shame Coutinio is 9.0, like him. Kolo there at 5.0 if starting. Sturridge is tempting if the main man after transfer window shuts. Gk situation is weird. Johnson at 6.0 is ok

    Man City-
Confusing me just to think about. If all transfers come in im steering clear of all forwards. A lot of time for Zab, Silva may on the wing? Not so good. Nastic great if nailed on. Navas at 9.0 too much of an unknown for now. Looks like Yaya back to defending?

    Man United.
I love RVP. I have him in my team. Kagawa worth it if Rooney goes. Evans good if playing. If Bale goes there, confusing. Welbeck at 7.5 is funny

    Newcastle-
Not feeling the Cabaye/ Ben Arfa love. New 4.5 centre back/ S Taylor situation worth watching

    Norwich-
Seem to have 2 of their players in my team. Turner seems a solid pick, I’m getting maybe too excited about Snodgrass, but hes my punt. Not sure about Wolfswinkle, could be Michu, could be Boselli. Olsson watch if OOP.

    Southampton-
I like Lambert, understand the argument for Jay R but at 7.5 Lambert seems underpriced. Boruc is a solid pick too as is one of Clyne or Shaw. Is 3 Southampton too many? Are we getting too excited? Lallana and Ramerez in mid worth a risk.

    Stoke-
Very little interest. Maybe Wilson at 4.5 if he plays.

    Sunderland-
Would like Mannone to come out as clear number 1. Cellular worth watching. Fletcher/ Alitdore would be punts. Loads of new signings, waiting on them

    Swansea-
Bony seems overpriced for a new player. Little interest in the whole team right now.

    Tottenham-
Bale. Get him. If Benteke there then decisions to be made

    West Brom-
An uninspiring team. Maybe Foster, maybe Anelka, Maybe a defender, maybe Brunt/ Morrison. Probably not.

    West Ham-
Like Collins, Like Nolan, Like Carroll. Will probably start with Collins, maybe Carroll if fit.

Sorry DZ for the long ramble, delayed the dull report I have to write by half an hour.No real point to this except to have my thinking torn apart/ confirmed or see if i am overlooking anything obvious

    Good luck to all.

If you don't start with RVP or Aguero, how are people going to get RVP in if he goes on a rampage and becomes a "must-have"?

The next most expensive striker (ignoring Rooney and Suarez) is the 9.0m bracket. This means that you would need another 5.0m to upgrade them to RVP! That would require at least one, if not 2, hits to get him in.

For this reason I think I'll start with Aguero. He should be nailed on when fit regardless of the Negrado signing and hopefully he can find some form. And if RVP starts firing, it's only a 3.0m jump.

Bale is more esssential to me than van Persie.
There's no drama if I decide to get in van Persie if he indeed explodes and any of my choices don't. I can do it a week later. Thing is, I doubt I will have to do this so soon.
In fact, I'm rather confident about fielding the seven of Hazard, Bale, Silva, Kagawa/Sturridge, Giroud, Rodriguez. Plus rather strong defence defence with Mert and the rotating keepers.
It's by fielding van Persie that would cause my headaches if just one of my big guns fails to explode. Because having van Persie and Bale in my team (and I want Bale more than I do van Persie) would reduce my team to be over-reliant on the max 4 big guns who could be captain choices and I would have poor defence.

Hits or WC's will be the fix all if necessary. Most people tend to WC near the start of the season anyway and even though RVP is fixture proof, he does have tough fixtures to ease the pain of not having him somewhat. Its a risk for sure, but its a calculated risk.

As for a City striker. If Negredo was a bit cheaper I'd go for him over Aguero, absolutely. However I expect he will be around 10-10.5m anyway.

So... am I the only one who doesn't like any of the big $ forwards not named RVP? I'm cautiously optimistic that the game of musical strikers will eventually provide us with more options, but if not I might have no choice but to go for RVP and roll the dice with a couple of cheaper alternatives.

The Telegraph themselves list him as one of the players NOT to invest in. 😆

I've actually found quite a decent 2+2 at the back with Collins/Chester and Amorebieta/Parr.

    Not worth the investment?

He could be bought closer to the deadline I suppose. So in that case he would only miss 3 games tops and would need time to settle in anyway.

Kone is gathering my interest. 11 goals, 5 assists, 15 bonus last season for 140pts in a poor team. Will he spearhead Everton? Cheapish at 7.0

Everton could form up 3-4-3. Kone up top through the middle and Mirallas out to the right. Who would be out left? Then Jelavic and Deulofeu could complicate things.

Was keen on the Wolf however looking at the comparison tool i have found a stat that has me rather concerned. Am i right to be worried?

Last season Holt only had a chance every 49,6 minutes Only Crouch and Pog fared worse.
You might wonder what that has to do with the wolf. Well the chance per minute stat is dominated by players from good clubs , there are exceptions , but generally the better the club a striker plays for the higher the chances per minute ,
Assuming Norwich play in a similar fashion to last season it appears his chances per minute will be fairly low. He may be better than Holt , and create a few extra chances , however he unlikely to bring the total down much.

Kone is the same price as The Wolf , if we look at the everton strikers chances per minute last season , we see

    Mirallas 26.6
    Jelavic 30

This indicates that if Kone becomes the number one striker he is going to have far more chances to score than the Wolf . It also highlights what a good pick Mirallas could be now he is classified as a midfielder , only 12 other striikers who played over 1500 minutes had more chances per minute

I know stats dont tell you everthing (Taabaat) but its made me stop and think regarding the Wolf.

Too much time on my hands today 🙂

Hughton ruined Norwich's attacking ability that was so prevalent in the previous season (which is why Holt used to be good). Hughton is a defensive manager so for me it makes a lot of sense to be wary about them. In saying all that I'm still backing Snodgrass to do alright. He has set pieces and is a tad cheaper. I'm also more willing to take a punt on midfielders because the three striker spots are so precious.

Yes , your right ,the season before Holt had a chance every 30 minutes. So we can assume its the managers tactics which are responsible.
Certainly puts a question mark over the Wolf. He wont be used to so few chaces , the easy leagues hes been playing in

Think I've talked myself into a planned WC post GW3. With this and an expected CHE DGW in mind, how does this lot look for the first 3 GWs? Quite light up front, but all 3 have decent fixtures and I expect them all to start (at least for the first 3 weeks)....

Yeah, if he goes then I'd probably do Giroud -> Rooney and downgrade Snod -> Thomas (bench fodder). That being said, I'd then have 3 CHE attackers with mun in GW2 followed by a blank in GW3. Possibly 1 too many.

I think Stevan Jovetic is Pellegrini's best signing for City so far. His favorite position is behind the striker, where Pellegrini utilised Isco so well.

This makes the City lineup pretty set, where Pellegrini will probably line up a 4-2-3-1, his favorite formation.

Hart- Zabaleta, Kompany, Nastasic, Clichy- Yaya Toure, Fernandinho- Silva, Jovetic, Navas- Aguero.

The biggest losers of the transfer window are surely Barry, Dzeko, Nasri and Milner.

Out of them, I expect Dzeko to leave, and Negredo to be the back-up stiker to Aguero.

All-in-all, it is surely the strongest squad in the Premier League right now, with only Chelsea coming close.

Aguero had one bad season maybe, but he is a superb striker.
Negredo and Jovetic will surely take some time to settle down, so will Navas, so don't expect any of them to oust Aguero from the lineup.

Aguero is as nailed on as it gets in the first few weeks. both Negredo and Jovetic will be eased into the setup imo. then if Aguero flops, maybe Negredo will claim the lone forward role. Pellegrini won't mess with Aguero at the start of the season. he is the fan favourite and Pelllegrini won't want the fans to be miffed at the very beginning of his tenure.

If planning on WCing after GW3, how many players would you be looking at having from the big teams? I'm thinking:

    MUN - 0 (RVP +1-2 others (Kagawa/defender) from GW4 onwards
MCY - 2 or 3 (Zab, Silva, Aguero)
CHE - 3 if DGW confirmed (Terry, Hazard, Lampard) for GW1, otherwise max 1 (Hazard/Lampard)
ARS - 1 (Walcott or Giroud, depending on striker signings)
    TOT - 1 (Bale)
LIV - max 1 (Studge if fit)

i would also put a Villa attacker in there if there's a dgw 1 and you plan to WC gw 3 to maximise things.

Even if their DGW is (ars, che)? Not sure I'd back them to score many there (plus they have LIV in GW2 (again not easy)

I always hold onto my WC until GW30+ for some reason, but ever since they introduced the winter WC it looks smart to use it at that break after GW3.

I'm looking at pretty much the same as you:
0 MUN to start (looking at RVP, Kag, defender once new signings are confirmed and the schedule lightens up)
1-2 City (most likely Silva, maybe Negredo depending on his price tag, Nasty is a nice price)
3 Chels (if there's a DGW- Haz, Lamps, defender... just Haz is there's no double)
1-2 Arsenal (definitely Walcott, possibly Mert if I don't go super cheap at defence)
1-2 Tott (Bale, maybe Benteke if he goes to Spurs, Kaboul could be a bargain)
0-1 Liverpool (Studge... Aspas could be a decent punt)

Ah, glad to hear Im not alone! I was the same - used to save mine for the DGWs, which was useful, but I think the better play overall is to play the WC early.

MCY's opening 3 fixtures are superb - Aguero should be nailed on given the other 2 are new to the club, plus on pens, so I think I'll be having him.

        Current lot is:

        Foster, Boruc
        Terry, Zaba, Collins, Alcaraz, Chester
        Bale, Hazard, Silva, Lampard, Thomas
        Aguero, JRod, Anelka

Reckon it's worth upgrading Anelka -> Kone, with a Terry, Zaba or Lamps downgrade?

Looks nice, definitely heavier at defence than most. so many bargains at the backline this year I think I'll be going cheap. People on here aren't backing Anelka too much since he'll be sharing time with Odemwingie and Long, so your suggested move looks sound!

I thought Odemwingie was on his way out? Hmmm, perhaps Anelka is a bit of a risk.

            Maybe this is better....

            Foster, Boruc
            Terry, Zaba, Collins, Parr, Chester
            Bale, Hazard, Silva, Walcott, Thomas
            Giroud, Kone, JRod

I only pick attackers based on their individual merit, not the team they play for. Obviously the team they play for dictates their fixtures, but just because a player plays for a big club, that doesn't make him a good fantasy pick.

For this reason I'm steering clear of City from the off. I agree with your comments about the other players.

Ah, so you don't rate Aguero? I think he's fairly safe to start (at least the first few games), and with Silva and Jotevic behind him I think he could score huge with those opening 3 fixtures. Time will tell I guess!

The 11m is a huge stumbling block for me when I know I can get decent alternatives for less, allowing me to have a dream midfield.

          I'm yet to be convinced.

Maybe some pre-season form and promising comments from the gaffa will do the trick

Mirallas>Arteta? Even with new BPS system?
Arteta really seemed to grow into his own toward the end of last season. No? PKs too. Mirallas will play in advanced position though. Thoughts?

    Current team:
    Szczesny - Boruc
    Mert - Turner (Nor) - Rat - Cuellar - Yang-Mbiwa
    Bale - Mirallas - Santi - Snod - Hazard
    Berb - Lambert - Aluko

    Any thoughts on Aluko. news?

Mirallas has been in every one of my drafts so far. I think he's gonna have a killer year.

Looking for a 3rd striker as well...do you prefer Aluko over Gayle (Palace)?

What are people's thoughts on Giaccherini? Signed by Sunderland, plays for the national team and is Italian, capable of communicating directly and swiftly with PDC.

is he better than RVW, maybe he'll have a good 2nd season like Mata at Chelsea.

as a Leeds United supporter I wouldn't bother with Becchio, not as good as Beckford and he couldn't make it in the EPL - I don't expect Becchio to either

Morning DZ.. Any thoughts on this lot? Few questionmarks that'll hopefully clear up before kick-off.

    Boruc Hart
Coleman Yanga-Mbiwa Olsson Collins Turner (cardiff)
    Bale Mirallas Silva Hazard Thomas
    Sturridge Giroud JRod

    .5 in bank.

    Thanks

I've put him in there on the assumption of his move to the toon, but will change if otherwise. As for Speroni, I did have Foster and Coleman, but thought Mert would be a much better acquisition. WIth Giroud I'm waiting for some more positive results than just a few good performances in 7-1 thrashings, I hope he can start performing as he'd be a good buy at his price

    B) Silva, Giroud & 3m change to upgrade elsewhere
