Scout Report -Yannick Sagbo

Steve Bruce continued his summer shopping spree late last week by acquiring Yannick Sagbo from French club Evian. The Ivory Coast international arrives at the KC Stadium on a two-year contract for a reported fee of £3m and is the Tigers’ eighth signing of the close-season as Bruce bolsters his squad after a second place finish in last season’s Championship.

In an interview with the club’s official website, the 25-year-old – who is the half-brother of West Ham’s Guy Demel – went on the charm offensive as he spoke about his intentions for the season ahead:

“I can’t wait to get going, and I look forward to meeting my new team-mates this weekend. I want to show the coaches and the fans what I’m all about, but not just with my physical presence. I also hope that my mobility and technical skills can add to what is already a good footballing team. I was delighted when the call came through. I had a very good feeling from the manager, that he really wanted me to come to Hull. That feeling was mutual. I am excited to get started in the Premier League. It is a league that I’ve watched closely, and I know all about it. I’m looking forward to the challenge, and I aim to score many goals.”

The History

A product of the Monaco youth academy, Sagbo turned out 20 times for the club between 2009 and 2010 but failed to find the net once. Snapped up by then-second division French side Evian prior to the closure of the 2010/11 summer transfer window, his contribution of nine goals and five assists in 31 appearances helped his new club clinch promotion to Ligue 1.

Over a couple of campaigns in France’s top-flight, Sagbo’s scoring record has been respectable, if somewhat less than prolific – 16 goals and nine assists from 68 matches, though 15 of those appearances arrived off the bench. On the international stage, he has notched twice in five games for the Ivory Coast Under 23s and has featured once for the Elephants’ senior side.

The Prospects

With Hull expected to retain their 3-5-2 formation for the season ahead, Sagbo is likely to be tasked with partnering Danny Graham up top, climbing ahead of the likes of Sone Aluko, George Boyd and Matty Fryatt in the pecking order. Bruce is desperate to increase the Tigers’ firepower after they notched a mere 61 goals in 46 games in the Championship last term – bearing in mind Hull have scored once in their last three pre-season games (courtesy of a converted spot-kick), their failings in attack are already obvious.

The Hull boss was quick to praise his new recruit, though, and suggested the addition of Sagbo will afford his side a more physical dimension up front:

“He is something different to what we have got. You look at (Christian) Benteke before he went to Aston Villa, he didn’t have a prolific goalscoring record but he had all the attributes to play in the Premier league. He is big, strong, powerful and quick, and our boy is a little bit like that too.”

Yet to be added to the Fantasy games, a price of around 5.0 seems the likeliest scenario for the Ivory Coast international – while Graham is the most expensive Hull forward option at 5.5, his initial cost was set as a Sunderland player.

Given their current toils in attack, it’s perhaps debatable as to whether many Fantasy managers will be eyeing up Hull as a viable source of attacking points, though their opening home schedule affords Bruce’s side a decent chance to make a mark, with Norwich, Cardiff, West Ham, Villa, Sunderland and Palace the first six visitors to the KC. Results in these games will surely be vital to their chances of beating the drop.

Indeed, pairing Sagbo with a Crystal Palace option would give you 11 kind looking home fixtures (NOR, SUN, CAR, SWA, WHM, AVL, FUL, SUN, CPL, WHM, CAR) in the opening 15 Gameweeks – an option for those considering a rotation partnership with Eagles forward Dwight Gayle (5.0) or winger Jerome Thomas, who comes in even cheaper at just 4.5 following his move from West Brom earlier in the summer.

ill take the 18 cleanies off city by playing hart each week ,and wont be stuck with last years problem of benching an away cleanie, one of the most exasperating things about fpl imo.worth 10.5 for the peace of mind and also sorts out the city defensive rotation problem

Presuming Fellaini and Baines stay, I think it'll be something like this:

      -------------------------Howard-----------

      Coleman----Jagielka----Distin----Baines

      --------------Gibson--------Fellaini--------

      Mirallas-------------Deulofeu-----------Pienaar

      -------------------------Kone------------------------

Very hard to say though, with Martinez's penchant for a 3-4-3. I think Pienaar/Osman/Deulofeu will rotate somewhat, and I can see Barkley getting a fair bit of game time. The midfield will be tricky, there'll be some good players missing out (which is a nice problem for us to have).

They've yet to play 3-5-2 in pre-season to start any game and only have four experienced CB's one of which (Heitinga) is looking to move on.

Coaches commented how Baines and Coleman 'get forward like wingbacks' playing 4-3-3 so little chance of them changing the system to start the year if at all.

If not opting for RvP, what do people think of the idea of having Kagawa as United cover?

I mean, should Kagawa (or another United player) be bought just for the sake of having United cover? I was considering this, but I'm not so sure anymore.

Thinking of it, to me it seems that the uncertainty of not having RvP will only get bigger if Kagawa is added into the mix.

I think I will get around this by having three expensive Chelsea players for GW1, so that I could fit in RvP for a hit or two come GW2/3.

In case anyone's interested I did some comparisons between my FPL scores last year and my projected scores from RMT. Just run a regression of my actual weekly score against the score RMT projected for that week (omitting the constant). The coefficient on RMT's projection was 1.067 (i.e. 1 RMT point is worth 1.067 actual FPL points, so the RMT model under-predicts points) with a whopping R2 of 95.7% which makes me feel I've made a mistake in the model.

Looking at some simple stats, my score over performed RMT's projection by 3.6 points each week on average (around 5%), the standard deviation of the difference in projected vs actual score was 14.4, which is fairly large as we might expect as FPL teams have good/bad weeks, but what's important is in the LR the RMT model predicts well.

Conclusion: RMT is worth the membership fee alone.

Would be interesting to see if anyone else has also looked at this, or if there's been a more sophisticated analysis of RMTs predictive power.

        Neither do I :S

Simply, if you plot what RMT projected I'd get each week on the x-axis and what I actually scored on the y-axis and plotted a trend-line through 0 the slope of the line would be 1.067. So an extra projected point from RMT is worth an extra 1.067 actual points (on average).

        THE IMPORTANT BIT

        "whopping R2 of 95.7%" more commonly written as 0.96 - R^2 is Pearsons correlation coefficient. Its describes the quality of correlation. Aka how good is RMT at predicting points week in week out. A R^2 of 1 or -1 would mean it was bang on. A value of 0 would mean there was no relationship, and the RMT model was useless. This graph visualises it all;

Sorry for the late reply. The R2 value comes from a regression run in gretl which is an open source statistical program (similar to EViews or STATA if your familiar). Unfortunately it was only for GW22-38 (and excluding GW26 where I forgot to grab the projection) as that's when I had membership. So only 16 data points so not the best sample, but probably enough to be robust.

Still thats is a lot more rigerous than I was expecting. Only 16 data points, but that R^2 is ridiculously high. I suppose the errors in individual players average out over the team each week. Gotta be in it to win it as they say, fill your team with high points likelihood players and enough will perform to make it work.

What confused me is I first run a regression with a constant, the estimated coefficient on the constant was something like -0.9, and the coefficient on RMT_Proj was 1.22. But the R^2 on that model was only 77%.

I've only got a background in econometrics, but surely if you set further constraints on a regression model (forcing the constant coefficient to be zero) would make for a worse predictive model?

Hopefully the Tinkerman gets in contact with Chris Atkinson and he might be able to help.

Look up the T-test and robust regression. Sometimes the y-intercept is not adding significantly to the equation so forcing it to go through the origin can make it a stronger regression equation.

Adding every variable under the sun will make the regression model closer to R^2 = 1. But that doesnt necessarily make it a "better" model.

              0.58 sounds more likely. 😀

Yea, really sorry about this, hopefully no-ones taken my findings too seriously. I think the main problem is the regression is only valid in my range of the sample data (think 33 is the lowest projected score) and without a valid theoretical reason to force it through the origin it was causing the estimates to be biased.

0.58 much more likely, though was surprisingly low in my opinion?

"which makes me feel I've made a mistake in the model"

And I had... The true value for R^2 should be 0.58, which is still fairly good, but way way off my original claim. Sorry everyone.

Hey there! You'll be surprised to know I've never done a really thorough investigation into how accurate RMT is. Shock horror! When you watch the video tomorrow you'll hear me talking about how linked our numbers are to the betting markets but you'll also see just how much human interaction there is, especially when deciding how likely players are to play. It's accuracy improves the more hours you put into getting the model up to date and we are committed to improving on that side this year. Hopefully, when I explain in the video a rough picture of what goes into the model and how it works you'll feel more confident about what it is trying to do and hopefully see why we have so much confidence in what it does and the method for doing it. But like all good statisticians know, the true test to see if something is any good or not, is by testing it. There is so much inherent randomness in football, that testing it to what actually happens can lead to "So,.... ...what does that actually show?...", So, I would not only be intrigued to see how it compares to what actually happens but maybe also someone else's predictions (if there's anyone out there that wants to try to predict individuals points or team's points for a year and see if you can beat RMT that would be interesting!) I'm pretty confident that what we do makes it the best model out there, though I'm really intrigued to see how it performs this year. Maybe someone in the community will pit it against another model and run some analysis over a few weeks to see how good it really is.

Saying all this, I've literally just, in 5 minutes or so, been doing some work on what is a reasonable R^2 value for 16 weeks, assuming a few things about weekly totals.

My first assumption was that weekly totals are well approximated by a normal distribution and that their Standard Deviation is proportional to the mean expected weekly total. I figured for a 50 point week a S.D of 10 seemed about right so I went for a SD of 1/5 of the expected weekly total. I came up with some random weekly predicted totals: 54,55,48,49,52,55,60,75,82,56,45,52,54,53,58,56, which come to a mean of 56.5, a reasonable kind of sample of scores for the RMT computer to predict.

I then run 1000 simulations on this data and then checked what R^2 values I got against simulated weekly totals and predicted weekly totals. I got a mean R^2 value of 0.633 and 90% of the R^2's fell between 0.299 and 0.857.

What does this show? Well if the model is correct and the big assumption that S.D of weekly scores is about a fifth of predicted weekly scores is correct also, then 16 weeks of data will give a mean R^2 of around 0.633, but can fluctuate quite a lot.

So this leads to the question, "what is the model's true variance?" Maybe 1/5 of weekly totals was too big, I don't know at the moment. I would like to look at that some more, perhaps by assuming that rates for things like goals are approximately poisson, and doing some maths. Saying this, this would be a hard task, as sometimes your team's players' scores are correlated, e.g. defensive doubling up would be hard to factor in.

The conclusion I suppose I'm making is we need more data to see how good RMT is. I think it would be a very interesting project and I'd definitely be happy to hear more from you guys or if there's others out there who have kept records of how RMT has performed for them! Maybe keep a track of how well it predicts your team this season, and why not have a go at predicting numbers yourself and see how the models compare 🙂

Thanks for the reply! Interesting that it uses betting markets (guessing betfair rather than a bookmakers odds), a wisdom of the crowd approach rather than a algorithm based on underlying stats.

If your interested in other models then Shots on Target (http://www.shotsontarget.co.uk/) runs his own model which is based on SoT and CC data (among other things). He's recently done some reviews of how his model performed (all though he may have made the same mistake as me with RTO).

I also kept track of different sites hand-picked teams last year (e.g. the FFS Scout Picks, NCNB's XI, TotalFPL's picks) as well as the best RMT team for each week. Haven't had a chance to look at that data yet, but I think RMT averaged less than teams picked 'by eye', but not by much. That's got to be encouraging given RMTs propensity to select many players from 1 team with a good fixture.

I'd say the SD ratio of 1/5 is fair, for the little data I have it's .22, so I wouldn't give .2 is too large anecdotally.

I'll endeavour to keep a better record of RMT's predictions and my own scores this year. I've been considering setting up a very simple model based on SoT, CC, BPS, and SoTConceded and my own guess at starting chances, but not sure I have the know-how to do that. If you can, get me on Twitter @2nd_Man

Looking at the Shots on Target blogs most recent post, for players scoring more than 75 FPL points he finds an R^2 of .695 for his model vs actual FPL points, so he may just be outdoing RMT!

Promised myself I'd steer well clear of City's forwards for now but starting to get the Negredo itch, tempted to bump Lukaku for him, especially comparing the two teams' opening 3 weeks -

DGW for Lukaku is tempting but he's prob not gonna play 120 minutes, their second is away to Utd, and no GW3 fixture, that versus a much more potent City team in comparison to their 2012/2013 lineup, with three easy Gameweeks...even if Negredo doesn't play all 270 minutes, he could easily be a super sub in one or two of those games.....that said, he IS untested in this league! Its like Sophie's choice.....

      The worst bit is:

"Leather and imitations of leather, and goods made of these materials and not included in other classes; animal skins, hides; trunks and travelling bags; umbrellas, parasols and walking sticks; whips, harness and saddlery."

      *Shudder*

Back after a break for the summer. Looking forward the season.

Any thoughts on what the first choice Chelsea midfield will look like?

Will Mourinho go 4-3-3 with 1 holding, 2 central, and 2 narrow wingers?

The only thing every seems to agree on is that Hazard is nailed-on.

In terms of minutes played last season, Kos gets more goals, assists and baps. That's what counts.

You can select to just use the comparison tool for each player's last 6 matches and there's an average as well. Either of these should help, the tool is great.
