Scout Report -Yannick Sagbo

Steve Bruce continued his summer shopping spree late last week by acquiring Yannick Sagbo from French club Evian. The Ivory Coast international arrives at the KC Stadium on a two-year contract for a reported fee of £3m and is the Tigers’ eighth signing of the close-season as Bruce bolsters his squad after a second place finish in last season’s Championship.

In an interview with the club’s official website, the 25-year-old – who is the half-brother of West Ham’s Guy Demel – went on the charm offensive as he spoke about his intentions for the season ahead:

“I can’t wait to get going, and I look forward to meeting my new team-mates this weekend. I want to show the coaches and the fans what I’m all about, but not just with my physical presence. I also hope that my mobility and technical skills can add to what is already a good footballing team. I was delighted when the call came through. I had a very good feeling from the manager, that he really wanted me to come to Hull. That feeling was mutual. I am excited to get started in the Premier League. It is a league that I’ve watched closely, and I know all about it. I’m looking forward to the challenge, and I aim to score many goals.”

The History

A product of the Monaco youth academy, Sagbo turned out 20 times for the club between 2009 and 2010 but failed to find the net once. Snapped up by then-second division French side Evian prior to the closure of the 2010/11 summer transfer window, his contribution of nine goals and five assists in 31 appearances helped his new club clinch promotion to Ligue 1.

Over a couple of campaigns in France’s top-flight, Sagbo’s scoring record has been respectable, if somewhat less than prolific – 16 goals and nine assists from 68 matches, though 15 of those appearances arrived off the bench. On the international stage, he has notched twice in five games for the Ivory Coast Under 23s and has featured once for the Elephants’ senior side.

The Prospects

With Hull expected to retain their 3-5-2 formation for the season ahead, Sagbo is likely to be tasked with partnering Danny Graham up top, climbing ahead of the likes of Sone Aluko, George Boyd and Matty Fryatt in the pecking order. Bruce is desperate to increase the Tigers’ firepower after they notched a mere 61 goals in 46 games in the Championship last term – bearing in mind Hull have scored once in their last three pre-season games (courtesy of a converted spot-kick), their failings in attack are already obvious.

The Hull boss was quick to praise his new recruit, though, and suggested the addition of Sagbo will afford his side a more physical dimension up front:

“He is something different to what we have got. You look at (Christian) Benteke before he went to Aston Villa, he didn’t have a prolific goalscoring record but he had all the attributes to play in the Premier league. He is big, strong, powerful and quick, and our boy is a little bit like that too.”

Yet to be added to the Fantasy games, a price of around 5.0 seems the likeliest scenario for the Ivory Coast international – while Graham is the most expensive Hull forward option at 5.5, his initial cost was set as a Sunderland player.

Given their current toils in attack, it’s perhaps debatable as to whether many Fantasy managers will be eyeing up Hull as a viable source of attacking points, though their opening home schedule affords Bruce’s side a decent chance to make a mark, with Norwich, Cardiff, West Ham, Villa, Sunderland and Palace the first six visitors to the KC. Results in these games will surely be vital to their chances of beating the drop.

Indeed, pairing Sagbo with a Crystal Palace option would give you 11 kind looking home fixtures (NOR, SUN, CAR, SWA, WHM, AVL, FUL, SUN, CPL, WHM, CAR) in the opening 15 Gameweeks – an option for those considering a rotation partnership with Eagles forward Dwight Gayle (5.0) or winger Jerome Thomas, who comes in even cheaper at just 4.5 following his move from West Brom earlier in the summer.

My punt is Lewis CAR. He almost certainly won't start the season, but cold replace Marshall at some point. He's an Eng U21 GK, previously rated, 'Arry was said to have chased him when Spurs boss.

          He's my back-up plan.

The backup keepers for the promoted teams are the best options it seems.

All of the above. Coutinho expensive, but my heart (as a 'pool fan) is trying to justify the probable loss of investment that he will inevitably undergo.
Aspas to start if Sturridge is not fit? Could be intriguing.
And Toure is a great shout, Rodgers likes a bit of experience in the heart of the defence, and does not rate Skrtl much from what I have seen.

Yeah, will watch early but Aspas could be interesting if Studge fails to get fit. Like Tooure potential too.

Clouded judgement is why I try to steer clear of Spurs players, Bale aside of course.

Does anybody have any idea how the City midfield will line up.

Milner at 6m worth a punt. I know he's not the flair pick but he's a grafter and seems to have an eye for an assist?

OR is he one of the usual picks for the pre-season games then left on the bench once the season starts?

That, plus CHE/MU midfields are among the toughest calls ahead of new season, I'd say.

I'd punt Ramires/FF, with Haz/Oscar/Schurrle behind Lukaku vs Hull, but several of those could get flipped for Villa game.

        Ferdy/Yoyo, Navas/Silva/Aguero behind Negredo.

I found Mourinho's recent comments on Mata's position quite intriguing, as he also listed a number of other players who could play in the "inverted winger" role, apart from Oscar. That could mean he's in line to play centrally "in the hole" i.e. Mata's position last season.

Would you say he's worth a punt instead of Lamps/a defender for the DGW?

I think Oscar is a great punt. I'm trying desperately to get Haz in also, so I can hopefully milk big scores across both DGW, but it means crappy forward or ditching Wally.

I'm still mulling, but really like the Oscar left-fielder. 3.2% ownership to date, great little differential.

I think there is something to point out if people are hoping Rooney leaves Utd so he will be in their team for the Chelsea DGW.

Utd will never, ever sell Rooney to Chelsea so that in Moyesinho's first home game at OT (GW2) he is wearing Chelsea blue and playing against them! Would be a nightmare for utd and if he scored/won the game for chelsea it would put huge pressure on moyes right after the 2nd game and the press would be all over it.

It is still possible Roo could join chels in the transfer window but it would defo be at the end of August after the Utd game at OT

    Ta

Two seasons ago there was a massive bandwagon for him (not on here but those pesky casuals) despite him playing for Bolton and having an absolutely hideous run of fixtures because of a goal + CS haul in the first game. I think his returns for the following couple of months were Hooiveld-esque.

From what I have gathered from the multitudes of predicting articles out there, Pelligrini could go one of 3 ways.

4-2-2-2, with Negredo and another forward at the top (possibly Aguero, they offer differing styles of play)

4-2-3-1 with Negredo up top, Aguero tucking in behind (or Silva in the hole) and Jovetic offering up the possibility of working on the flanks, Navas on the opposing side.

Its all speculation, their pre season has hardly lit the world on fire, and since Pelligrini has recently come out to say how much he likes Dzeko, it adds more of a headache!

I was happy happy when it was just Aguero and Dzeko! But that was never going to happen.

I think it will be pick an initial squad of 25. Then pick an 18 man squad out of your 25 for each gw where you can sub in players that haven't played yet after each gameday, similar to uefa games. There will then either be a number of wildcards you can use or certain transfer periods like one every 3 months. Will probably be between £5-10 to play

Still having trouble justifying Coutinho, even though his pre season, and end of season form was excellent.

Is he just a flat track bully? Or is there something more?

At 9 mil, he is expensive, especially when the general consensus is that Walcott is going to have the season of his life (apparently).

    So who to get?

Think Coutinho is going to be a big-hitter this year. Keen eye for goal and should get plenty assists.

Price is the same as Sturridge and Gerrard and I think he'll outscore both.
