PlayON – The FFS Strategy Guide

As we announced late last week, we’ll be supporting www.playon.co.uk as our weekly Fantasy Football pursuit this season. Having dabbled with the game at the end of the previous campaign, we’ve picked up one or two pointers along the way that have, to our surprise, brought us a fair share of the prize pots.

With our £2 multiplayer game now open and offering a guaranteed £500 pot for Gameweek 1, we thought we’d share some of that wisdom and encourage you to try out what we think is an excellent addition to the Fantasy Football world.

Find the Untouchables
A PlayON lineup needs 11 starters who are more than likely to play for 90 minutes. With 5 points available for every minute played, there are 450 points available for finding reliable starters who can see it through to the final whistle. Sometimes you can compensate for an absentee and a few goals can carry a 10-man team but as a rule, be sure to focus on the players that will ensure you get a full starting XI out on the pitch.

Hunt out the Bargains
This is without doubt the key to success. PlayON’s pricing algorithm does its thing in advance of every Gameweek, basing player prices on performances over the prior number of gameweeks. Very often, this can create a select band of players who, for one reason or another, are clearly underpriced and offer value.

In particular, look out for those returning from injury or suspension – they will often have taken a price dip having missed several matches.

Play the Stats
This game is one of the few that recognises defensive work and rewards players who put in a shift. Actions like clearances, interceptions and tackles play their part and you should take the scoring matrix into account when making your team selections. Finding a cheap midfielder who can earn defensive points or, more importantly, a budget defender who can hoover up clearances, can be the key to freeing up funds for investment elsewhere.

The canny PlayON manager will also assess the fixtures with these stats in mind. A centre-back facing West Ham is more than likely to face a lot of crosses and aerial balls – it stands to reason that he’ll earn more clearances as a result.

Shameless plug but, if you’re an FFS member, you do, of course, have access to all the stats used in PlayON with the ability to filter by Gameweek and Gameweek range and a compare tool to run head-to-head player comparisons. We’re also planning to add specific PlayON tables very soon.

Dare to be Different
You can sometimes kid yourself that you’ve put together a strong lineup when, in reality, others will be going into the Gameweek with very similar players. A differential or two is always handy and taking one or two calculated risks can give you the edge when it comes to the shake-up for the cash prizes.

Watch for Late Injuries
Harking back to our first point, that late nugget of team news can be all-important when it comes to finding bargains. If a regular starter is crocked, this could open the way for a undervalued second string player to come in – while this is a big gamble when dealing with attacking players, it’s often handy at the back with defenders earning points for clearances and interceptions.

Read our Player Picks
Every Friday we’ll bring you three player picks – one for each position, that will help provide the foundations of your PlayON lineup. Just three, mind – we want to maintain our chances of winning some of that prize money too.

Tomorrow we’ll be taking a look at PlayON’s more advanced features and we’ll also be giving you an exclusive look at the brand new PlayON site that’s on its way soon.

Our first player picks article due on Friday, ahead of the opening Gameweek.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

it pains me, but unless i do some more tinkering to get him back in, ive just dropped Coutinho for Michu.

the swans early fixtures arent pretty, but i still think Michu will outscore Coutinho over the first four gameweeks.

my only concern is rodgers recent comments about playing him as a true no. 10. how do we expect liverpool to set up while suarez is out? are the two options below reasonable?

    V STRONGER SIDES:

    sturridge
    coutinho aspas
    allen gerrard
    lucas
    enrique agger toure johnson
    migs

    V. WEAKER SIDES:

    sturridge
    aspas coutinho sterling/alberto
    lucas gerrard

Henderson seems to have played his way into the staring 11 for a while now. I don't think Liverpool currently have the wide players to entertain the idea of moving Coutinho centrally.

        excellent point.

and unless suarez is benched after his ban is over for being a shit teammate, there's no room for coutinho in the middle given rodgers preference for lucas, stevie g. and his mancrush allen.

oh yeah, and i always forget about hendo.

Hendo will not start! IF Rogers isn't brave with going with Cout centrally then Allen will fill the other slot. I would not be surprised to see two of Sterling/Aspas/Alberto starting on the wings though. Especially as you say against the weaker teams and lets face it by in large thats exactly what pool have to start the season.

Also note that I fully expect a new signing to be starting by GW3!

Anyone considering captaining a CHE defender?

Remember one of my biggest regrets last year was chickening out on Ivanovic (c) in the opening round, but then again he isn't as nailed on now as he was then... Cole doesn't have enough attacking threat - same can be said for Cech... 😉

Very nice team. I see you are trusting Soton at the back and going with an expensive defense. Could well pay off. Who are you offloading for GW2?

Btw I don't think Brayford is certain to play, might be wiser to go Chester/McShane...

I've got the same dilemma... thing is I won't be playing Kim until GW3 anyway, if at all, so I might as well stick with the £4.5m mid... it's only a 2 pointer and I think the £0.5m can be used elsewhere

Yep GW3 is the problem. I have 4 other mids which I will never rotate so spending an extra .5m on practically bench fodder is a waste. But I have a nagging feeling that Kim maybe the Michu or Adam of previous seasons.

Keeper rotation of Boruc and Mannone gives you FUL, SUN, cry, WHM, wba, CRY for the low, low price of 9.0m.

    Any takers? 9.0m Alternatives

Hi Guys, please can I have your valued opinions on this lot?

    Boruc / Foster
Brayford Collins Toure Chester Turner (Nor)
    Hazard Oscar Walcott Coutinho Tonev
    Lukaku Soldado Giroud
    +1m

Basically offers me a number of easy swap options in Mirallas, Negrado etc for Oscar/Hazard and Lukaku over GW2/3

If he has a stinker and you have him , it's only a big deal if the player you didn't get instead has a blinder.
If he doesn't have a stinker you're quids in.

Benteke will be good for later fixtures and nailed on but the choice goes down to

        RVP > Lukaku > Sturridge

Seems to me the choice is whether Lukaku will get the minutes or whether Benteke will score in crappy fixtures.
I would take the punt on Lukaku ,personally. I think both Arsenal and Chelsea will have a plan for Benteke, and Villa might get some secondary scoring from Agbon instead.
          Don't blame me though 😉 .

Should I get rid of Kim and use the funds for Coleman/Toure?
    Appreciate it heaps 🙂

I'd improve one player at defense (Turner for me) but I like the team. If I was making a switch I would be more prone to downgrade Soldado to a 9M forward (Sturridge being my favorite) than Kim. Best of luck

Must go all out on GW1 DGW.

This is the only DGW where you can ensure you get 6 players for it. Every other DGW because you can't WC in and out will result in you either taking hits to get players or taking them or holding on to sub-optimal players while you save transfers to take them out.

I'm tempted by this option for that reason.

All the best with that strategy. Which 3 Villa players would you think would score more in their two games than the 3 players you have had to leave out?

sturridge or soldado for the first weeks (have no other TOT or LIV) player.

Sturridge is more PL proven, but Soldado on pens and with Bale likely to be gone it's more or less a coin flip, isn't it?

I really don't rate Coutinho. He had a good first 6 months as an unknown quantity at Liverpool but teams will now know what to expect and will try to nullify him. He's also never played more than 20 games in a season so there could be question marks over his overall fitness.

He's young, so judging him on games-per-season could be a little hasty. Rodgers has indicated he'll be a key feature for the team that scored the 3rd most goals last term. I see what you're saying, but the omens look good for him.

By that standard you could rule out everyone worth getting FPL wise on Liverpool other than Gerard and the back line. Sturridge is injury prone, Suarez is bite prone, and the others are not FPL worthy as they are not proven qualities. However, I know at some point this season I'm going to be kicking myself for not having Sturridge, Coutinho or Suarez. That's just too much fire power to ignore.

Also, Rodgers stated that Couts best place is in the hole, and with his FPL points earned last term when playing in the hole (someone here posted it yesterday, but I can't remember who), and with the new bonus system which I think SHOULD be advantageous to playmakers like Couts, it's very difficult to ignore his pedigree, and his possible 200+ point FPL season.

But I understand the argument. And there are many other 9 point midfielders to pick from.
