PlayON – The FFS Strategy Guide

As we announced late last week, we’ll be supporting www.playon.co.uk as our weekly Fantasy Football pursuit this season. Having dabbled with the game at the end of the previous campaign, we’ve picked up one or two pointers along the way that have, to our surprise, brought us a fair share of the prize pots.

With our £2 multiplayer game now open and offering a guaranteed £500 pot for Gameweek 1, we thought we’d share some of that wisdom and encourage you to try out what we think is an excellent addition to the Fantasy Football world.

Find the Untouchables
A PlayON lineup needs 11 starters who are more than likely to play for 90 minutes. With 5 points available for every minute played, there are 450 points available for finding reliable starters who can see it through to the final whistle. Sometimes you can compensate for an absentee and a few goals can carry a 10-man team but as a rule, be sure to focus on the players that will ensure you get a full starting XI out on the pitch.

Hunt out the Bargains
This is without doubt the key to success. PlayON’s pricing algorithm does its thing in advance of every Gameweek, basing player prices on performances over the prior number of gameweeks. Very often, this can create a select band of players who, for one reason or another, are clearly underpriced and offer value.

In particular, look out for those returning from injury or suspension – they will often have taken a price dip having missed several matches.

Play the Stats
This game is one of the few that recognises defensive work and rewards players who put in a shift. Actions like clearances, interceptions and tackles play their part and you should take the scoring matrix into account when making your team selections. Finding a cheap midfielder who can earn defensive points or, more importantly, a budget defender who can hoover up clearances, can be the key to freeing up funds for investment elsewhere.

The canny PlayON manager will also assess the fixtures with these stats in mind. A centre-back facing West Ham is more than likely to face a lot of crosses and aerial balls – it stands to reason that he’ll earn more clearances as a result.

Shameless plug but, if you’re an FFS member, you do, of course, have access to all the stats used in PlayON with the ability to filter by Gameweek and Gameweek range and a compare tool to run head-to-head player comparisons. We’re also planning to add specific PlayON tables very soon.

Dare to be Different
You can sometimes kid yourself that you’ve put together a strong lineup when, in reality, others will be going into the Gameweek with very similar players. A differential or two is always handy and taking one or two calculated risks can give you the edge when it comes to the shake-up for the cash prizes.

Watch for Late Injuries
Harking back to our first point, that late nugget of team news can be all-important when it comes to finding bargains. If a regular starter is crocked, this could open the way for a undervalued second string player to come in – while this is a big gamble when dealing with attacking players, it’s often handy at the back with defenders earning points for clearances and interceptions.

Read our Player Picks
Every Friday we’ll bring you three player picks – one for each position, that will help provide the foundations of your PlayON lineup. Just three, mind – we want to maintain our chances of winning some of that prize money too.

Tomorrow we’ll be taking a look at PlayON’s more advanced features and we’ll also be giving you an exclusive look at the brand new PlayON site that’s on its way soon.

Our first player picks article due on Friday, ahead of the opening Gameweek.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Question regarding the captain change is the sky game...

If I change captain on saturday night (to take effect sunday) does that mean the same player will have to be captain for next Saturday?

      No:
      - you transfer him out
      - you can change your captain on Sat morning (but then cant change him for another week)

GW2 is a tricky GW anyway so I'm expecting a lot of that.

Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, City all at home GW1 which is a big reason for that with Man Utd and Spurs having relatively few viable fantasy options.

    Few questions for the krew:
    1. Ravel Morrison.. Is he a no go now they Westham have signed Downing? will he now be playing in the hole? other options?
    2. Shaw/Clyne injuries, is it worth inversting in Southamton defence (Boruc or one of Shaw/Clyne) with one or both of them out to injury. Surely if one of them is out the defence is weakened.
    3. Whats the deal with Collins? injured? not nailed on anymore?

Haz and Lukaku are decided for me... but the third Chelsea...

    Option 1

Ivan + Nolan or Johnson + 0.5m (Ivan to Kosc Wk2 or Wk3)

    Option 2

Kosc + Oscar (Haz/Oscar or Lukaku to someone for bandwagons)

I don't see the point of picking 3 Chelsea players when at least two of them might not play twice and then you have a horrible fixture followed by a blank.

Only going with 2 would make my life easier...

But it's the risk and reward that's tempting. I'd take 100 minutes from my three forwards because I think they would score big points...

Two transfers before the blank and bench one, no hits...

That is very much best case scenario, one injury and you are taking a hit and its not like a lot of other quality players don't have good fixtures with 90mins guaranteed game time and good fixtures to follow.

Just my opinion. Its not worth the risk for me to pick a defender who is highly unlikely to get 2 x CS or any midfielder who is very unlikely to get two starts.

Come on lads....if the is one lesson lekearned from last seas it is that dgw are essential to having an excellent rank. suprisedsurd on how many rmt do not include 3 Che and Benteke.
Last season there were 4 significant dgws....3 of them paid off hansomely and arguably the 4th did too if you were lucky enough to give the armband to SesGet on it or else you will find yourself playing catch up the entire seasons

I'm going Mig + Boruc. Mig will play most weeks but Boruc has good fixtures when Mig has tough ones. I also don't want a non-playing keeper on the bench.

I really don't know why the FA insist on these fixtures. Sure get the squad together for training but half the team ends up no turning up due to "injuries". Surely two days of them all training together and little practice matches is better than half a team playing half a game together.

Very good team.....but then I have about 11 of those and so I would say that! 🙂

Are you looking at keeping Cech for the long term? My keeper situation is the only really doubt I have left before the season starts.

      😆

I don't know that it affects Koren, Koren would play in the hole, Thud deeper, Meyler may be most at threat

I wonder does this nail on the 3-5-2 for Hull

      __________McGregor_________
      ___Chester, Davies, Figueroa___
      Mummy________________Brady
      ______Thud, Koren, Meyler____
      _____________Koren_________
      ___________Graham_________

      Or something like that

    couple of questions:

    1. Should I stick with bale or go for another option? I assume Bale will not start v Palace, is this correct?

    2. Soldado, Lukaku and Dzeko. Already have coutinho but should I take out one of dzeko or lukaku for sturridge?

      1) Definitely avoid Bale until the window ends or he starts. (even then like RVP he is not worth the value to me)
      2) I won't be punting on Dzeko and Lukaku to start but one of them and Sturridge looks like a great bet.

If he had come in at 5.0m I would have been all over him but it remains to be seen how nailed he is once they are all fit and luckily its an easy avoid at the start of the season due to their shocking fixtures.

            Baines Zabaleta Parr Chester Brayford
Walcott Coutinho Hazard Thomas _________ 5.5m
            Anelka RVP Lambert

            What do u think?

I would bring in Kim and Koren as a rotation most likely and drop Thomas. I don't see any value in midfield until you get up to Snoddy and with Anelka up front you will need a bench player who always plays in midfield.
