PlayON Player Picks – Gameweek 1

Having rolled out our Strategy Guide for the weekly Fantasy game over at www.playon.co.uk, yesterday, we now turn our attentions to the player list as we hunt for bargains ahead of the opening weekend.

Gameweek 1 Player Picks

While many Fantasy games have a double Gameweek 1 for Chelsea and Villa, PlayON have limited the Gameweek to just 10 fixtures – excluding Tuesday’s showdown at the Bridge. This affords us a more even playing field as we assess the potential on offer and, as we’ve discovered, PlayON have handed us some budget gems to consider ahead of tomorrow’s big kick-off. Here’s out pick of the bunch:

Goalkeeper – Ben Foster
The cheapest keeper on offer in this week’s game, Foster will set you back a mere 6.0 ahead of a home game against Southampton. While they tightened up at the back as the previous season unfolded, Mauricio Pochettino’s side scored just three times over their final five road trips – prompting plenty optimism for a Baggies clean sheet at the Hawthorns tomorrow afternoon. Alternatively, United’s David De Gea takes up just 6.8 of your budget and may appeal to those who reckon the champions will nullify the threat of Michu and Wilfried Bony at the Liberty tomorrow evening.

Defender – John Terry
Chelsea’s skipper prepares to welcome Hull to the Bridge in Jose Mourinho’s first match back in charge. While the likes of Branislav Ivanovic will set you back 10.4, Terry has been very kindly priced at just 7.4 by comparison and looks set to get the nod at the heart of defence against the Tigers on Sunday. Those looking for similarly priced alternatives may turn to United’s Phil Jones (7.5) – set to step in for the suspended Rafael at right-back, his foraging runs down the flank could come to fruition at the Liberty, while Norwich’s Michael Turner comes in at just 7.0 ahead of the home clash against Everton.

Midfielder – Steven Gerrard
The Liverpool captain is another one who looks like an intriguing option as Brendan Rodgers’ side get set to welcome Stoke to Anfield tomorrow lunchtime. Gerrard comes in at just 7.7 in this week’s pricing list – putting that into perspective, Philippe Coutinho is 10.4 while Norwich’s Robert Snodgrass is 11.7 – and with spot-kicks, set-piece and corners boosting his attacking appeal, Gerrard should also benefit from a scoring metric which rewards defensive work, with tackles and interceptions also key to our selections. Those looking for a budget punt may have an eye on 6.7 priced Jack Wilshere; with Mikel Arteta ruled out, he looks good to start against Villa, either alongside Aaron Ramsey in central midfield or in “the hole” behind Olivier Giroud.

Forward – Olivier Giroud
With just two places available for our frontlines, gambles are always ill-advised. The Frenchman still splits opinion across the Fantasy fraternity but he welcomes Villa to the Emirates tomorrow on the back of an eight-goal haul across the pre-season friendlies – more than any other player in the top-flight. At just 8.3, he looks a strong choice against a side that conceded in each of their last 22 Gameweeks in 2012/13.

How To Play

Once your starting XI is built (you can change your team as many times as you like up to two hours before the first kick-off) you can compete for cash. Entering a multiplayer game for a set stake, you’ll have a chance of wining your share of the pot should you finish high enough in the rankings.

Similarly, you can challenge another player to a one-on-one game, selecting the amount at stake. The likes of Robbie Fowler, Gareth Southgate and Opta Joe are all playing the game and are there to be challenged.

The Fantasy Football Scout Game – £500 Guaranteed Pot

Our £2 multiplayer game, dedicated to our community, is now open and PlayON are offering a guaranteed £500 pot for Gameweek 1 – the pot has already grown above this and currently sits at £636 and rising. Register an account and throw your hat in the ring for a share of the spoils.

Challenge Your Mates

You can also set up your own multiplayer games with your mates. While we have some Fantasy Football Scout games to enter, there’s an incentive to set up your own this week.

If you set up a £2 game and get 10 players and £20 in the pot, then PlayON will add an extra £5 in prize money to your game.

Create your own game at www.playon.co.uk.

Finally, a reminder that we published a strategy guide, offering some tips for getting the most from your PlayON lineup, right here.

PlayON is a form of gambling so you have to be aged over 18 and over to play and, if you do wager some cash, please remember to gamble responsibly.

I have an interesting view with Baines. Not wanting to start any Baineswagon or whatever, and pretty sure it won't happen here. But just wanna share it out.

We all can't deny the quality of Baines as a player. Good going forward, good set pieces, etc. He's popular with the casuals, but not around here. Why? Mainly because his price 7.5m puts people off.

Coleman is 2.5m cheaper, is playing the same position. But really, the main attractiveness of Baines is his set pieces - where no doubt he'll get way more goals and assists compared than Coleman. I don't see the prospect of getting a CS for Everton under Martinez, I'd rather get Toure on that price range.

There's also Mirallas at 7.5m. I can honestly see Baines as an alternative to Mirallas. Both are very attacking players, both are OOP. I know it's not an potato to potato comparison. A 7.5m midfielder does not equate to 7.5m defender. With Baines, you'll get the cheapest midfielder (4.5m), and with Mirallas, you can have a cheapest + 0.5 (4.5m) defender. So you can say, Baines is '0.5m more expensive' than Mirallas, is more or less same dangerous attacking wise, but nailed on with the set pieces.

This is the common back four and five mid of template team.

    Ivanovic - Kos - Clyne - Collins - Brayford
    Hazard - Wally - Coutinho - Mirallas - Kim

Kim 1st bench, 2nd bench whoever between the rotating Clyne/Collins, 3rd benchfodder Brayford.

Going with Baines, it'll change to

    Ivanovic - Kos - Clyne - BAINES - Brayford
    Hazard - Wally - Coutinho - THOMAS - Kim

People are put of because in this case you'll have to play Kim as the 4th midfielder, but why not consider playing 4-3-3 instead? I mean yes it's unorthodox but if that's where the points are then it may not be such a bad idea.

Kim still the 1st bench, Thomas will be 2nd bench, 3rd benchfodder still Brayford.

I know the downside you won't get a rotating backfour which is suckish but hey Baines points. But if a Stoke-esque defense emerge this year, why rotate? I played Cameron every week last year, And if you get the odds CS, it'll be a bonus. He's supposed to be more attacking than the years before, so you may expect him to score a few more goals or assists to offset his probable less prospect from CS.

So yeah, there you go. Anyone might be interested? I'm not, for now. But as the season goes, if Martinez do stick with 3-4-3 and Everton somehow still tight at the back, I might consider Baines.

Toure in place of Coleman for me tho 😉

But probably later on a lower price 5.5-6.5m priced midf will emerge and you may consider Baines

Someone (Forca?) posted something similar, in that you should consider Baines as a 6th midfielder.

However, it is easier to swap around midfielders of that price, than to swap Baines.

I must've missed it. But yeah that's a good way to simply put it, a 6th midfielder who get points in case his team getting a CS.

Someone pointed out he had 5 goals and 7 assists last year - a Johnson-esque performance and we would probably expect more from a 7.5m player.

But it's worth noting that he'll play more forward this year. So I can see a goal or two more and probably a double digit assist this year. And he still may get that CS points. And the baps favours him this year. So that's a consideration as well.

        He's on my watchlist now.

Nice post. I think the logic of staying 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 is that the allure of a player like Baines is that he gives you an eighth attacker more than an option for a fourth defender. Set piece taking, attack minded defenders like Baines and maybe Luiz let you play 2-6-2 or 2-5-3, in essence.

What's your plans for gw3 to get rid of dgw players? It could come down to would lukaku score more than soldado + 4? Very tough

Do we think Dzeko will start? And is it risky to have if I already have 3 CHE players?!

I think so, yes. No way Aguero will start, lack of match fitness. There's a small risk that Negredo will start as a lone striker, but I'd give it a 90 % chance that Dzeko will start. He's a good short-term punt.

I think he will start, but after GW1 he will be a constant rotation risk. With the 3 CHE and the blk ahead be prepared for the possibility of a hit or two

Peoples views on Sigurdsson this season? Without Bale and Dempsey he could be set for a more attacking role?

No doubt. Will probably play "in the hole" against Palace. I'm in "wait and see" mode on Sigurdsson, could well be great value for 7m if he plays in that position regularly.

Played behind Soldado in a 4231 in the last PS game but looked a bit rusty. If he finds a bit of form in that role will be a massive bandwagon but too risky first up.

Not me, but that sounds lovely. I'm going with Soldado instead of Negredo because Soldado is absolutely nailed on, but with that run of fixtures, Negredo could easily catch fire.

Dzeko - Lukaku - Dzeko (template, yeah yeah) for me. Worried about going without Benteke for the DGW, but something had to give.
