The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Saturday

The Knee Jerk returns in a new, digestible format. An instant response to the matches or matches of the day, offering a quick appraisal of the protagonists and dilemmas posed.

Day one, and already Fantasy managers find themselves re-addressing their “big decision”. Conveniently, a precocious talent on Merseyside may just offer a ready-made solution.

The Game Changer

It was clear that the decision on Robin Van Persie would again split Fantasy Football managers down the middle. Owned by 43% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, there were vast waves of support for the argument that his huge 14.0 price tag was too much of an obstacle, that value could be found elsewhere to compensate for his undoubted consistency.

That might still be the case, as Christian Benteke and Danny Welbeck demonstrated, but Van Persie’s superb brace at the Liberty this evening will have prompted early doubts.

Those without Van Persie must now decide whether to remain firm and back their initial policy or consider extensive emergency surgery to acquire him. Should Van Persie return again at home to Chelsea, then big investment could arrive over the international break ahead of the delicious Old Trafford clash with Crystal Palace in Gameweek 4.

If 14.0 looked too much this morning, we can only imagine where Van Persie will be in a few weeks if he shows that acclaimed consistency.

Van Persie really is the biggest test of the “jerky knee”.

The Underused

There was every chance that Ross Barkley would benefit from Darron Gibson’s likely absence in the Everton midfield, and so it proved.

The 19-year-old capped what was described by Roberto Martinez as an “outstanding performance” with a sweetly struck goal to hand the Toffees the advantage at Carrow Road. While that was eventually surrendered to a debut strike from Ricky van Wolfswinkel, Barkley had done more than enough to have us Fantasy Managers take notice.

Barkley is owned by less than 2% of FPL managers and yet, at just 4.5, offers obvious appeal as a fifth midfielder for those now frantically looking for a route to recruit Van Persie.

Can he retain his starting role? It’s perhaps doubtful but in Martinez he’s playing under a manager who will give young talent a stage to impress. Barkley will surely start at home to West Brom next weekend and that might just be good enough for plenty of Fantasy managers.

The Selection Poser

The absence of Robert Snodgrass in today’s Norwich lineup was a bitter blow. According to Chris Hughton, a groin problem kept him out of the reckoning and allowed new signing Nathan Redmond to sparkle. Hughton did indicate that Snodgrass’ problem is minor, having been “touch and go” for today’s clash. The Norwich boss also stated that the Scot would have started over Elliot Bennett, offering some reassurance that Redmond’s performance will not be a cause for further doubt for Snodgrass owners.

The Norwich City lineup does create further issues, however. Steven Whittaker’s strike underlines his case to retain his start at right-back, although we can surely expect Seb Bassong to earn a recall once fully fit. It remains to be seen if club captain Russell Martin will oust Whittaker at full-back, or whether Michael Turner will eventually come under threat.

Arsene Wenger would love such options. With injuries to Kieran Gibbs and Bacary Sagna, coupled with Laurent Koscielny’s dismissal, the Gunners rearguard is now in tatters. Already deprived of Thomas Vermaelen, Wenger looks set to a patched up back four to face Fulham next weekend. Those who invested in Per Mertesacker and Wojciech Szczęsny will already be considering an exit route.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I did not see Rooney joining in the celebrations even though he provided the assist for 2 goals and it was rather selfish of RVP not to pass to Rooney for the third goal when Rooney had made a great run to the right... Does it mean Rooney will leave United on or before deadline day?

Not saying it wasn't a great RVP goal... But surely Rooney expected him to pass, when he made that great run to the right... and RVP did see him make that run, he just took a chance and lucky for him, it went in...

What we need is a 3 month transfer window so we can add 4-5 players to strengthen the squad with 1-2 of those being marquee signings. Get them in nice and early so they can integrate with the squad, then we'll be fine...oh...oops

It means I'll have to use Chester or Ward next week, but it's probably the wise move. I'll probably stick with the original plan of using my transfer on Lukaku to another striker. (Too bad I didn't stick with the original original plan of just starting with Sturridge!)

RVP ownership went up to 45.9% already and no price change. Net transfer in about 29000.

At this rate he will need 100% ownership to get any increase in price! 😛

At least non-RVP owners don't have to worry about RVPs price rocketing as much as it might if he was cheaper.

43% ownership surely means there isn't that much room for an increase in ownership.

Also, at 14m, it's not like the non-owners will be able to bring him in easily.

Other strikers having a good week may also stem the flow of transfers in for him.

GW4 is still on the cards, and I don't see him rising by more than 0.2m by then.

I disagree. I see no reason why he can't go up slowly if he's performing well every week. 0.1 rise each week is a distinct possibility. If he continues to be awesome by the international break his price might snowball out of control due to the numerous wild cards looking to bring him in before its too late.

Plan was always to sell Ivan this week. Should I:

Come my fellow legion of Van Persie, come and revel in the amazing foresight and tactical knowledge in picking the Dutch lord. Let those flighty flibbertigibbets who cast their sluttish gazes on lesser mortals wail, bemoan and gnash their teeth in despair.

      Revel comrades, revel. Become SMUGZILLA!

*Especially applies if like me you also have Coleman and Mignolet, at Defcon 9 level of insufferable conceited complacency at the moment.

Not too bad, 42 including baps with 3 Chelsea to come. You need to start posting on here again, I've had to abandon Twitter after real-life people (workmates) found me 🙂

I've made a couple of appearances back here. Like some of the changes to the boards but I find it hard to keep up speed wise. Good to see some of the old guard keeping the quality up though 🙂

Did a great job on the slate borders on the drive, not so well with the bath sealant 🙁

Luke Shaw shown at 50% so I stick him as third sub... and he gets 9 points. I'll take some of the blame, I should have perhaps have done more research, but I'm really annoyed at that orange flag... WHY?!

I messed around with my defence at the last minute (taking out Collins for Turner) and put Shaw in at first sub. Thought West Brom would win and perhaps not concede - wouldn't have played Shaw personally in the first 11 if he had not been flagged.

Still satisfied with my team despite it not containing RVP, I'm edging my bets on Soldado scoring big against Palace.

If he does, I'll be able to wave my Sturridge, Soldado, Lambert strikeforce in the faces of smug RVP owners 😉

Good thing about RVP's high price is that all would find it difficult to get him in so he won't jump like any other player in the league !

At least an NTI of 32000 is what we are looking for to have a price rise....

As for RVP, I am going to stick with my original plan and get him in gw4 for two reasons -:
      a) The whole reason I stayed off RVP was his gw2 and gw3 fixture....If I get him now I only prove to myself that I am a complete kneejerker
      b) To get him in now would require 2 hits, which he'd only have gw2 and gw3 to recover.

Rather wait till gw4 and get him without a hit.
