The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Saturday

The Knee Jerk returns in a new, digestible format. An instant response to the matches or matches of the day, offering a quick appraisal of the protagonists and dilemmas posed.

Day one, and already Fantasy managers find themselves re-addressing their “big decision”. Conveniently, a precocious talent on Merseyside may just offer a ready-made solution.

The Game Changer

It was clear that the decision on Robin Van Persie would again split Fantasy Football managers down the middle. Owned by 43% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, there were vast waves of support for the argument that his huge 14.0 price tag was too much of an obstacle, that value could be found elsewhere to compensate for his undoubted consistency.

That might still be the case, as Christian Benteke and Danny Welbeck demonstrated, but Van Persie’s superb brace at the Liberty this evening will have prompted early doubts.

Those without Van Persie must now decide whether to remain firm and back their initial policy or consider extensive emergency surgery to acquire him. Should Van Persie return again at home to Chelsea, then big investment could arrive over the international break ahead of the delicious Old Trafford clash with Crystal Palace in Gameweek 4.

If 14.0 looked too much this morning, we can only imagine where Van Persie will be in a few weeks if he shows that acclaimed consistency.

Van Persie really is the biggest test of the “jerky knee”.

The Underused

There was every chance that Ross Barkley would benefit from Darron Gibson’s likely absence in the Everton midfield, and so it proved.

The 19-year-old capped what was described by Roberto Martinez as an “outstanding performance” with a sweetly struck goal to hand the Toffees the advantage at Carrow Road. While that was eventually surrendered to a debut strike from Ricky van Wolfswinkel, Barkley had done more than enough to have us Fantasy Managers take notice.

Barkley is owned by less than 2% of FPL managers and yet, at just 4.5, offers obvious appeal as a fifth midfielder for those now frantically looking for a route to recruit Van Persie.

Can he retain his starting role? It’s perhaps doubtful but in Martinez he’s playing under a manager who will give young talent a stage to impress. Barkley will surely start at home to West Brom next weekend and that might just be good enough for plenty of Fantasy managers.

The Selection Poser

The absence of Robert Snodgrass in today’s Norwich lineup was a bitter blow. According to Chris Hughton, a groin problem kept him out of the reckoning and allowed new signing Nathan Redmond to sparkle. Hughton did indicate that Snodgrass’ problem is minor, having been “touch and go” for today’s clash. The Norwich boss also stated that the Scot would have started over Elliot Bennett, offering some reassurance that Redmond’s performance will not be a cause for further doubt for Snodgrass owners.

The Norwich City lineup does create further issues, however. Steven Whittaker’s strike underlines his case to retain his start at right-back, although we can surely expect Seb Bassong to earn a recall once fully fit. It remains to be seen if club captain Russell Martin will oust Whittaker at full-back, or whether Michael Turner will eventually come under threat.

Arsene Wenger would love such options. With injuries to Kieran Gibbs and Bacary Sagna, coupled with Laurent Koscielny’s dismissal, the Gunners rearguard is now in tatters. Already deprived of Thomas Vermaelen, Wenger looks set to a patched up back four to face Fulham next weekend. Those who invested in Per Mertesacker and Wojciech Szczęsny will already be considering an exit route.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

To not quote Frank Sinatra: regrets? I've had a few, but not my GW1...

I think as long as you're not even contemplating whipping out the WC, I consider GW1 a success.

Coleman's disappointing, but EVE clean sheets look iffy so no rush there (hey, if you've got him then be content with the points). Sad about Collins, but there's still scope to buy him. Shaw is an injury waiting to happen and perhaps Chambers will offer up an uber option. Mig is still not an option with Sturridge, Coutinho and Toure about so no regrets there either (again, well done to the many owners) and Boruc did me proud.

I would still pick Mirallas and Coutinho over Nolan even now, (particularly with the "late fitness test" news) as I think both will outscore him in the medium term. Barkley would have been stuck on the bench and how Martinez will fit him and Gibson in, I do not know.

So many, many options in the 8-9.5 region that it would suggest that even after watching RVP's inevitable masterclass, there may be other routes for points.

So, not too many regrets and no freak results (Liberty surprised me more than Emirates). Inevitably underwhelmed, but not broken. Let us all look forward to the remainder of the GW.

What frustrated me more is that I was going to captain RVP and then went for Hazard. If that little Belgian doesn't score a couple of goals over the DGW I will be mighty annoyed!

As a non-rvp owner i gotta ask.. did people who dint own Rvp really expect not to score goals at all this season? we spent the entire of preseason discussing this! he will be one of the top scorers in the EPL if not the top scorer. the point was always whether he;d perform at a rate of 5 million + over Benteke/Giroud/Sturridge etc and today showed that it's not that big a risk(2 of those 3 outscored rvp and anelka).. Relax non-owners. enjoy your extra funds and make bold captaincy choices each week. dont run back to rvp.. just yet

tbh i said to my mates i wont be surprised if rvp gets two but has a non-rvp owner im confident soldado will get 2 goals tomorow to shut the rvp owners up who had to go with anelka

      rvp + anelka (19.5)= 15 points (if 3bp)

      Lukaku + soldado (17.5) = ??? possibly 26 between them

Could've been sent off too. Didn't realise he got injured though 😆

Ramsey and Rosicky apparently injured alongside Gibbs and Sagna too!

      That's blasphemous round these parts.

The baps are already shown on fpl detailed scores

Ha I recall there being 'the bap chap' but there were others as well all with varying degrees of accuracy. And thanks all, I guess I'll have a gander in the detailed scores!

So, if the current figures are correct based on the 'details stats', these are the 1) current BPS bonus points vs. 2) last season's bonus points (they also have ESP on there which was what was used last year).

    Liverpool vs. Stoke

    1) Mignolet 3, Johnson , Aspas 2
    2) Sturridge 3, Henderson 2, Gerrard 1

    Arsenal vs. Villa

    1) Benteke 3, Giroud 2, Szczesny 1
    2) Benteke 3, Luna 2, Westwood 1

    Norwich vs. Everton

    1) Coleman, Barkley 3, Whittaker 1
    2) Coleman 3, Barkley, Whittaker 2

    Sunderland vs. Fulham

    1) Hangeland 3, Kasami 2, Stekelenberg, Reither, Briggs 1
    2) Kasami 3, Duff 2, Taarabt 1

    West Brom vs. Southampton

    1) Lovren, Shaw 3, Lambert 1
    2) Ward-Prowse 3, Lambert 2, Shaw 1

    West Ham vs. Cardiff

    1) Nolan, Cole 3, O'Brien, Reid 1
    2) Cole 3, Nolan 2, Connolly 1

    Swansea vs. Man Utd

    1) Welbeck 3, Van Persie 2, Hernandez, Rooney 1
    2) Welbeck, Van Persie 3, Evra 1.

With the top one being this season's baps, you can clearly see how big a difference it makes, then. Because values for BPS are so much lower, the probability for joint baps is much higher (which I hate tbh as it's more likely to occur in games where not much happens!).

If Sturridge gets none then the new system is clearly hugely flawed. Would've got 2or3 under the last two systems and deserved them

Yeah. Agoblahor was also the best player on the pitch imo and he's one of the lowest in our team. But as a positive Szczesney was good but by last season's ESP he would've only got 1 more ESP point than Baker, who came off injured after 17 minutes!

I still think (hope) these might be subject to change. I am sure Lambert has not got his extra point for scoring the winning goal.

Yeah, these are all provisional (it doesn't say what exactly the points have been for so far which is annoying). They do include the added penalty assists now which is nice.

Yep, Shaw's assist is currently denying Lambo Baps..

hopefully the winning goal point gets added later. Sturridge will benefit from this too.

The goalies are going to be a big beneficiary of the new bps. both Mignolet and Szceszney wouldn't have got anything last season

And not even close as well. Not sure if this justifies owning a bigger keeper or a smaller one, as it was the penalty saves that got them the bonus points, and these are a bit random.

4-3-3 vs. Chelsea likely to be used again, so Tonev will either come off the bench against Chelsea, but has a good chance of starting vs. Liverpool.

    rvp + anelka (19.5)= 15 points (if 3bp)

    Lukaku + soldado (17.5) = ??? possibly 26 between them
