The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

The Premier League’s bizarre shortage of goals continues as Sunday’s headline acts muster just two strikes between them. It saw both Olivier Giroud and Daniel Sturridge maintain their goal-a-game records, whilst at the Hawthorns, Swansea struck twice, leaving the Baggies without a goal in their three league outings.

The Game Changer

Giroud’s moment of quality proved the difference in a disjointed North London derby. A sublime flicked finish from a smart Theo Walcott centre was the Frenchman’s third goal in as many league games as he goes on establishing his top-flight reputation.

While we’re anticipating arrivals at the Emirates before the window slams shut, it’s fair to say that if a world class striker fails to saunter through the Emirates door, then Fantasy interest in the impressive Giroud will accelerate.

Currently priced at just 8.6 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Giroud is owned by over 13% of managers following an outstanding pre-season that saw him strike eight goals. He has taken that form into the season and is not only accepting his goalscoring opportunities with confidence, his all-round play as Arsenal’s centre-forward has undoubtedly improved. It remains to be seen if that’s enough to discourage the lesser-spotted Emirates chequebook from fluttering in the direction of the Arsenal attack.

The Underused

The fixture computer did few favours for Swansea’s Fantasy prospects over the opening two matches. A home clash with the champions and an away trip to Spurs returned just a single goal but, today at the Hawthorns, we saw Michael Laudrup’s side kick-start their season and remind us of the talent they have within the ranks.

Ben Davies was a member of our team of the season last term after a full campaign at left-back generated eight clean sheets, a goal and two assists for the initial value of just 4.0. Priced at 5.0 this time round, he’s been largely ignored but will end the Gameweek as the top scoring defender having cracked the opening goal in the 2-0 win over West Brom. Team-mate Pablo Hernandez failed to make the anticipated impact in his first season but promises improvement this time around. Goal and assist returns today will earn him a couple of bonus and see him rank as the top midfielder in the Gameweek; at just 6.0, the classy Spaniard – who has now played a part in all three of his side’s strikes this term – could yet be a prospect for those who cannot stretch funds to cover Michu.

With Liverpool and Arsenal at home in the next three, the tests keep coming for Laudrup’s men but today’s result reminded Fantasy mangers that we’ll need to monitor progress at the Liberty and be ready to pay attention once the schedule eases from Gameweek 8.

The Selection Poser

Kolo Toure’s absence from the Liverpool lineup through a groin injury was perhaps expected, although noises from Anfield prior to the match gave his Fantasy owners some hope that he’d be available. It wasn’t to be.

With the injury played down by Brendan Rodgers, Toure could easily be in contention following the international break. However, it appears he may be about to slip down the pecking order by then. According to reports and Rodgers himself, Liverpool have agreed fees for defenders Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori. The signing of Sakho from Paris Saint-Germain, looks particularly daunting for Toure owners. The 23-year-old is a French international and is said to have commanded a fee of somewhere in the region of £18 million. It seems unlikely that Liverpool have paid that kind of money to have him play second fiddle to Toure. Sakho can be deployed at left-back but with Aly Cissokho recently joining the club as back-up to Jose Enrique, long-term, it looks as though Toure’s position is under real threat. The former City man is currently owned by over 9% of Fantasy Premier League managers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

You have the right idea with who to go. I just brought in Giroud, bringing in Tekkers next week. Migs is a must in place of Mannone. Snods is not a rush to get rid of but he should go IMO.

I'd keep Soldado and maybe take a four-point hit -- Mannone for McGregor and Snodgrass to Palinho / Ramsey / new Arsenal, Tottenham or Man Utd midfield signing.

Soldado has better fixtures coming up than Benteke. About Giroud I'd wait until the transfer window closes, but knowing Arsenal I don't think he's threatened. I don't think 3 transfers worth a WC, just use the free ones.

    Mignolet (Daniels)

Walker | Ivanovic | Coleman | Zabaleta (Whittaker)

Yaya Toure | Oscar | Walcott (Barkley, Ward-Prowse)

    Giroud | Benteke | Sturridge

WC Team, had to. Crap 2nd Goalie to be able to afford Walker with his run of games. 0.0 in the bank.

First, I'm not a fan of 4-3-3. It's just not viable. I know there are a lot of CS' at the moment, but once you have a high-scoring gameweek, you're screwed really. The goals will come.

Second, I don't think Yaya is a good choice. He has scored twice, but from free kicks. He plays too deep to be a good pick.

The rest looks good. Good forward line. I have RVP but he is hard to justify for his price at this stage.

0.5 but if you sell the player for a profit (Has to rise 0.2 for a 0.1 profit) then it would go up to 0.6 if you bought a player of the same value.

e.g. If you bought Mignolet at 5.5 and he rose 0.2 and you had 0.5 in the bank and then sold him for Szczesny who is 5.5 you would have 0.6 in the bank.

Loading up on top defenders just seems like a waste of money to me. I think people are getting carried away with defenders and going 4-3-3. Historically, it just doesn't work and I don't think this season is going to be an exception. We are only 3 gameweeks in. There have been a lot of clean sheets but it's the start of the season and it's not going to stay that way. Once the goals start coming you will fall quickly behind.

Your call though. That's just my opinion and I could be wrong.

Before you do this, check out the BPS awarded in the 4-0 MCI v. NEW game...
(or the 2-nil WBA v. SWA today)

1-nil is great for defenders under the new system but, if a team wins by 2 or more goals defenders will be hard pressed to garner bonus points.

Bad example that. Swansea had 2 defenders, Davies (3) and Chico (1) and City
City defenders Zabaleta/Lescott vs Newcastle got bonus too. Unless a single offensive player scores or assists multiple times, defenders remain relevant for bonus pts.

No not really a bad example. Just didn't explain it well... So let me be more clear.

First, Davies got the max BPS bc he scored so we'll exclude him as anyone who scores 'should' get bonus points.

Further, I was pointing out that when multiple goals are scored defenders are only getting a single bonus point.

Unlike a nil-nil or 1-nil game where 2 - 4 defenders will net themselves 2 or 3 bonus points each.

          MCI - 4 v. NEW - 0 defenders netted 2 BPS total
          CAR - 0 v. EVE - 0 defenders netted 7 BPS total

Some midfielder from a mid table team will carry the team and start scoring a lot of their goals. e.g. N'zogbia at Wigan, Adam at Blackpool, Snodgrass at Norwich.

But I think you're underestimating how much 170 points is. Nolan hasn't broken 150. Snodgrass had 152 last year. N'Zogbia got close with 167 But N'Zogbia (And this applies to Adam too who had a mammoth 192) had a huge advantage during that season of the subjective bonus point system. Because NZog and Adam were so much better than everyone else on there teams, they wracked up 3 BAPS whenever their team was able to win: Adam had 45, Nzog 33. Now that the defenders are favored in the Baps, and an assist and a couple of pretty dribbles aren't enough to reward midfielders, I'd be shocked if we ever saw a bargain like Adam/Nzog again.

Fair point. I do think we'll get a bunch of mids cheaper than Baines around 150 or so. Baines' scores of 170 flatter him slightly as he plays every game unlike most midfielders. John Walters who played the most minutes last season for a midfielder got around 140 points and he isn't impressive in the slightest so picking cheaper players with nice fixtures and form and then transferring them out should get you more points than Baines will achieve imo.

I agree. If you weren't allowed to make transfers, Baines would be a great season long pick, but I agree that playing the fixtures with cheaper options iis the better way to go.

Still, you have to consider the opportunity cost, which is losing a defender, not a midfielder. With the way bonus points are being allocated, heavy hitting defenders look enticing. If you get Baines, you're forgoing one of the more friendly priced options from Chelsea, the Manchesters, Liverpool, Spurs and Arsenal, as well as Coleman. While it may be true that Baines will outscore all those dudes, the question is will he outscore them by enough to be worth a minimum of a 1 million premium?

If Ramsey plays regularly, I'm expecting him to be in a similar range. And one of the cheaper Tottenham signings is likely to come good, whether it's Chadli or Paulinho or someone else. Taarabt may come good at Fulham. If he gets game time, this year could be Zaha's breakthrough season. Ben Arfa may hit stride. If Baines transfers, his points will drop off too -- less game time, no pens.

I've got Baines in my side along with Brady.

Too often people believe we "have too much spent on defenders..."

      Well let's switch their roles:

-If Brady was a 5mil defender would I be happy with his production compared to others in his price range? Most certainly.

-If Baines were a 7.5mil midfielder would I be happy with his production compared to others in his price range? Most certainly.

      Just a matter of perception...

When the creative midfielders get their act together and start scoring they'll be well in the mix for bonus every week. e.g Yaya Toure who has scored twice and in those games got 5 bonus points.

Yes but only if they score

They will still end up on less points overall because of the many games that they only assist

Yaya was helped by his goal but, also by his passing %, right?

Walcott might break 80% & will rarely crack 90% passing so that hurts his potential BPS haul as well.

Someone broke down the old & new bonus system & Walcott was one of the players most affected by the change.

Conversely, Arteta got a bump b/c of his passing prowess.

    Toure, Zab, Coleman (Turner, Gabbidon)
    Yaya, Silva, Hernandez, Walcott (Morrison)
    Giroud, benteke, Soldado

toure may drop. playing a wc, get someone that could increase by 0.2, and buy your final lineup before GW4

Re: Toure replacement, read the "knee jerk" article (above)... LFC have 2 new defenders to announce. THey watched on w/ Toure and Victor Moses today, from the crowd.

Yaya is a gamble.. you need attacking threat with that money.

Otherwise, i like this team. I'm about to WC myself (see the post above yours)

Before you do this, check out the BPS awarded in the 4-0 MCI v. NEW game...
(or the 2-nil WBA v. SWA today)

1-nil is great for defenders under the new system but, if a team wins by 2 or more defenders will be hard pressed to garner bonus points.

Chico and Davies are defenders, although Davies did get a goal so he's kind of irrelevant. Chelsea defenders got 6 bonus between them when they beat Hull 2-0. I think the big thing is that a defender with a clean sheet is more likely to get bonus than a midfielder/striker with a single assist, which is a huge change from last year. The 0-0s, 1-0s also used to be a lottery, I remember Bale and Fellaini getting 3 a piece in scoreless draws, now the defenders gobble them up. It's true that the low scoring has skewed the scoring but I think we've seen enough to say that defenders are better off under this new system.

Yes, to the Davies goal / BPS being irrelevant. Good eye sir. *tips cap

Now, I went 'big'-ish on defenders going into this year & it hasn't disappointed me.

That said, I don't feel the new BPS warrants some of the 4-3-3 RMT WCs I'm seeing.

Really need to take these first three weeks with a grain of salt.

The EPL hasn't turned into Serie A overnight, right?

Horrible week, really bad, and not one I was expecting thought my team looked fairly good on paper. Thank god Redmond came in for me having stuck with my gut on him from day 1.

Giroud and Sturridge are hurting me big time atm but with a front line of RVP Benteke Soldado, I'm surely gonna be good in the medium term not knee jerking to one of those two?

Furthermore, really starting to doubt RVP with so many big scoring mid priced forwards, Sturridge and Giroud look set to match his score in the near future, money to be spent on the BAP hoovering defence.

If RVP blanks vs Palarae think he might have to go....

Thinking of doing Mirallas to Lampard this week with my FT and leaving the rest as it is, surely things are gonna turn better for me. So frustrating aswell after a very good GW1 had two stinkers that have set me right back.

Man U looking very lacking in creativity. RVP hardly even touched it today. It's a concern for sure with others doing so well for almost half the price. I'm just hoping that Suarez coming back and Arsenal's signing diminish Giroud and Sturridge.

Really? Because as much as I like Suarez, he was wasteful for them. So far Sturridge has the knack of scoring single important goals that win the 3 points, whereas Suarez tended scored in routs, like the hat tricks against Norwich.

I don't think Sturridge in is a knee jerk, but I know where you're coming from...

You have 3 great strikers, but Soldado, if any, would be the one I'd swap out if he continues to lack in chances...

I have him right now, and will keep for a few more weeks, probably until GW6 when I bring in RVP...

Soldado looks very dangerous when he gets the ball in the box, was the width of Giroud's shoulder away from a goal, and if Walker wasn't so useless at the end could easily have had an assist. I think with players like Lamela and Eriksen coming in to provide the service he has the fixtures to score very well.

Agreed, with increased creativity from the wings and in behind, I'm guessing he'll do OK in the next few...

But I'm pretty set on getting RVP for GW6, and barring any injuries, I won't be selling Benteke or Sturridge, so it will have to be him...

True but United looked utterly toothless in both of them. Without signings I'm worried RVP will not be receiving as many chances as I'd hope when I'm paying 5/6 million more for him than everyone else who is firing. I think it's made worse by weeks like this were all the popular strikers you don't have score and none of yours do.

Cheers, I've had him since my very first draft at that price was sure he'd be a bargain. Glad I stuck with my gut because lots of people tried to warn me off him. Just a shame the rest of my team did so crap!
