Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 3

Our final look at the previous round of fixtures sees us reassess one of Swansea’s many Spaniards, acknowledge Liverpool’s options at both ends of the field, while bracing ourselves as wildcard-wielding Fantasy managers force player prices up over the international break.

The Player

Last term, it was all about Michu at the Liberty. Michael Laudrup’s acquisition of the former Rayo Vallecano player proved one of the canniest pieces of business in 2012/13 as the Spaniard racked up the goals in his debut season for the Welsh outfit and offered Fantasy managers a mid-price gem for their five-man midfields.

Initially, though, it was the acquisition of Pablo Hernandez from Valencia that was regarded as the real coup. Arriving in a £5.5 million deal, the playmaker added a real touch of class to the Swans’ wide areas but with injuries and indifferent form plaguing his displays, Hernandez flattered to deceive. Although he turned out 30 times in the league, the winger managed the full 90 minutes on only 10 occasions and, with three goals and eight assists to his name, registered 110 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points – only fourth best in the Swansea midfield.

This time round, it’s been a little different. After an impressive pre-season, Hernandez has been the standout Fantasy performer for Laudrup’s side – Sunday’s goal and assist in the 2-0 win at West Brom highlighted his growing influence as he becomes more accustomed to the rigours of the Premier League in his second season on English soil. Having supplied the assist for Wilfried Bony’s consolation in the Gameweek 1 home defeat by United, Hernandez has played a part in all three of the Swans’ league goals so far – factor in two assists in two Europa League games and it’s clear his consistency is on the up.

Granted, while Hernandez is no Michu in terms of finding the net, he has targetted “seven or eight” strikes after his impressive start. Certainly, we’re not expecting double-digit goal returns but with a relatively budget-friendly price tag across the Fantasy games, he could be a real value contender over the campaign. Fantasy managers have been quick act on the back of his Hawthorns exploits – Hernandez has already risen by 0.1 since the weekend and as the bandwagon picks up pace, another price hike looks imminent over the break.

The Team

Perhaps, upon reflection, the Luis Suarez situation was somehow a blessing in disguise. The media circus surrounding the Uruguayan’s domestic suspension for the first six games of the season, twinned with Arsenal’s ultimately fruitless chase for his signature, kept the focus off the players on the field and allowed Brendan Rodgers’ side to quietly prepare for the campaign ahead.

So far, it’s worked wonders. Three successive 1-0 wins have sent the Reds to the top of the table and with options right across the backline and further up the field, there’s every reason to invest in Rodgers’ side ahead of a kind run of upcoming fixtures.

The arrival of Mamadou Sakho will further strengthen a backline yet to concede and put Kolo Toure’s owners on edge. The Ivorian’s current groin injury hardly helps but with Rodgers labelling the £15m Frenchman “a marquee signing”, he looks odds-on to become a regular alongside Daniel Agger at the back, with the new Bonus Points System boosting the Reds’ defensive appeal.

Philippe Coutinho may have yet to pick up the attacking points after a strong pre-season but his owners will be intrigued by Rodgers’ comments yesterday. After signing Victor Moses on loan from Chelsea, the Reds boss suggested the Brazilian could occasionally be moved to the centre behind Daniel Sturridge, with Moses capable of filling in on the left.

Sturridge’s prolific start, which has seen his bag the winner in all three Gameweeks, is making him an irresistible Fantasy force right now as managers scramble to acquire his signature. At 9.1 to Suarez’ 10.9 in FPL, Sturridge is doing more than enough to suggest he’ll be the better value of the two and could easily outscore the Uruguayan upon his return in Gameweek 6 at Sunderland, given his more advanced role. Suarez, with an ownership of just 0.5%, however, looks a real differential in the making for that Black Cats’ showdown.

The Talking Point

The first international break of the season always brings with it huge temptation. A two-week break affords the time to reassess our initial line-ups and contemplate the deadwood in our 15-man squads – for many, the lure of that first wildcard proves irresistible.

This season, the introduction of the new Bonus Points System in FPL has also proved significant. Plenty have been persuaded to restructure their sides and opt for some premium-priced options at the back; after three rounds of matches, only two midfielders, six forwards and three keepers have scored more than 17 points, compared to 14 defenders.

The influx of new signings over the last few days has also proved alluring. Mesut Ozil’s arrival at Arsenal and Tottenham’s acquisition of Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela hands up top-class talents to consider for our midfields, while Samuel Eto’o’s switch to Chelsea and Romelu Lukaku’s loan move to Everton have altered the Fantasy landscape. Indeed, such is the multitude of in-form options up front, Robin Van Persie is losing owners despite a schedule which sees him welcome Palace, West Brom, Southampton and Stoke over the next six Gameweeks.

Since the weekend’s action, the frantic market activity has inflated several players’ prices. With Olivier Giroud also firing in the goals, the Arsenal man – along with Sturridge – has earned himself a substantial Fantasy bandwagon and could, conceivably rise the maximum 0.3 before the next round of matches. The likes of Yaya Toure, Hernandez, Jose Enrique, Pablo Zabaleta and Fraizer Campbell continue to acquire plenty new owners, while this afternoon’s addition of the new players is likely to spark further frenzy amongst the Fantasy fraternity, with the deadline still 11 days away.

Are the new signings from outside the premier league able to rise in price initially or are they "protected" for a period of time??

Surely if not then people like Ozil will rise by 0.3M+ before the next gameweek....

In the past they were protected for 8 days. Don't know about this year. It's harder to get a rise this season (har har) because you need more transfers. So not so much of a worry.

If you feel you are being unfairly treated by the site moderators then you need to speak to them directly (and usually confidentially). Most sites will not stand for posts such as yours which elude to other people being given favourable treatment and calling the administrator's actions into disrepute.

Also, take some responsibility for the situations you create for yourself. If you're going to be a controversial character (joking or otherwise) then you need to accept that some people will react to that. Seems a little hypocritical to me.

Didn't think I'd do another one of these but found myself looking at the new signings stats.

It's some details on the new signings from the past few days only. I have worked out the points per app (assuming each is over 60 mins) and worked out the clean sheets if they played that many games for their new club last season,

Obviously there are some stats that can't be fully counted on but it is helpful for me and is nice and simple.

Like most of you guys I have a dilemma as to whether or not to wildcard.

My current team has done me pretty well so far accruing 201 points and 38,251 in the overall rankings

    Mignolet (marshall)

    zabaleta coleman turner (brayford) (baker)

    Coutinho walcott Mirallas Silva (morrison)

    soldado giroud dzeko.

My worry is however is that in this team I have too many players I would consider deadwood namely brayford, baker, morrison, mirallas, dzeko.

I'm also concerned about Coutinho's slow start, however unlike a lot of you I have a lot of confidence in Soldado scoring goals.

That being said should I wildcard to this team?

    Mignolet (marshall)

zabaleta coleman collins ( chester) (B Turner)

walcott lamela coutinho ben arfa (ward-prowse)

    giroud sturridge soldado

I believe that team 2 doesn't have any real deadwood in it and I will score more heavily with this option. I do have a concern though that I have too much double coverage? walcott/giroud, sturridge/coutinho and lamela/soldado.

Which team do you guys prefer and what alterations do you think are neccessary??

When you consider how many players Arsenal have sold in the last 2/3 years - Fabregas, Nasri, Clichy, Van Persie, Song, Gervinho and removed off the wage bill the likes of Arshavin, Chamakh, Denilson, Squillacci from this latest window and then given the increment in TV revenue, coupled with the fact we still generate the most matchday revenue anywhere in the world - I can't help but feel this Arsenal have broken the bank malarkey is rubbish. For me it is where was the world class striker and world class centre half that we should have signed and that's without being palmed off with a free transfer in Flamini in place of the world class defensive midfielder.

Had we signed Ozil early in the window and still had that awful display against Villa, I'm sure there would still have been the spend some effing money chants, yet suddenly Wenger and Arsenal appear to have pulled off a masterstroke. Well I'm not buying it - Mertesacker is still a sluggish centre half who will not form part of a title winning side and even if you gave him the benefit of the doubt we are one injury/suspension from playing a full-back at centre half.

Yes, very impressed with signing Ozil, but there was so many more signings that were needed and this will all become apparent in the coming months - still 3rd/4th place at best for me this season.

At some point you need to make a stand. To me it was the same with Henry when he signed a 5 year deal and a year later went off to Barcelona blaming the uncertainties of David Dein leaving the club, when it was more to do with his personal situation.

If he goes, fine and move on, but don't give him the hero's return malarkey for some daft 6 week stint when we should have been taking the opportunity to make a decent signing. The club were clever and it amazingly appeased most Arsenal fans, but it was papering over cracks again. Come March there's no Henry just that clown Gervinho back from the African Nations. No-one seems to discredit Wenger for signing Gervinho and the year before that Chamakh, who were both hopeless. Similarly we had to listed to all that dross about Bendtner, Denilson, Djourou, Fabianski, Mannone, Vela etc. all being world class - well none of them proved to be any good.

              Rant over.

make a stand? against what? it seems you're ranting for the sake of ranting. flamini''s a genuine back up for the DM position, he hadnt played a game since may & played very well asgainst spurs, he's clearly still got it so why not?... so what if he left yrs ago & returned, ian rush left liverpool & came back & had success, no one complained about that, it's happend loads of times in the past. nowt new

& why shoudlnt henry have a heros return? he was awesome for us for almost a decade, so what if he wanted to try something new, i certainly didnt begrudge him

tbh you come across as a very bitter person who takes this stuff far too seriously.

Maybe... The Ian Rush example was a good response. The possible softening of that situation was that English clubs were banned from European Competition at that time, but in fairness they took to him just as well when he returned.

I'm a season ticket holder! I understand that we've had to pay off a new stadium, which has put us at a disadvantage since we moved from Highbury. Now it's fully paid off, we can compete. Just give it time. If Arsenal start going in an upward trajectory, it will look like a masterstroke from Arsene. United went 26 years without a trophy when they moved to Old Trafford

Fair enough and you are amazingly patient.

Can't help but feel that United were at Old Trafford a long time before the 26 years that you speak off commenced. The main difference in that time was that United tried to compete and failed, we haven't made signings to try to compete.

Perhaps Ozil IS the start and hopefully we will start to challenge next season.

This season will still be the same though.

I agree mate, some great points in there
Ozil is a hell of a marquee signing but central/attacking midfielders aren't what Arsenal needed

I agree that we should have bought more, but I don't agree with the Flamini statement. He is exactly the sort of player we needed, and as Wenger said "It's just a shame he didn't cost £20m". Wenger obviously has a lot of faith in Sagna at CB, so I say see how he does. This is probably the biggest signing our club has ever made (Dennis wasn't in form when we got him) and Arsenal fans are obviously very, very happy. Also, Mertz has been brilliant, and I think that we have made him look worse than he is because of a lack of a defensive midfielder. (Watch Tony Adams' interview on defending) We will see, but getting Ozil makes us a big club that other players will now want to join!

Hopefully the last point you make is the positive going forward and we build on this next season, but do we lose Cazorla next year if he has a great season, putting us back to square one. My overall point was that with this £70m to spend they spent £42m odd and recouped £8m from Gervinho and perhaps they haven't gone for it as many suggest.

Perhaps Miguel wasn't going to be a star but he was centre back / left back cover and it seemed unnecessary to send him out on loan - really thought this was paving the way for a new signing.

In the same way getting Ozil attracts players, it makes players want to stay! I think we needed more signings, but Wenger is obviously happy, and we can only wait and see whether we are right. The fact that we have gone from a £15m record to £42 shows ambition. I also agree on Miquel, it seems a bit mad loaning him out, but I think if we were desperately unlucky, we can recall him for a fee.

our defense with mert & kos instead of verm has been great literally since they came together last season. as has been mentioned we finished with the 2nd best defense last season - cant be too bad!

as for flamini? sorry but he's just what we needed

the thing i'm happiest about is the fact that arsenal fans (particulrarly the wenger out brigade) were saying we're a feeder club, that we only sell class players & can no longer attract them, well that's clearly not the case & hopefully we can use a player of his calibre to attarct more top players & push on.

do agree about he striker tho but things dont always work out.

Van Persie had his chat with the board around 15/18 months ago. Surely, if we are now going to be big hitters in the market we could have given that assurance and started spending then rather than selling him and then the following summer pay £42m for one player.

The debt could/should have been spread over a longer period of time so that we could have competed still for trophies - make it a manageable debt rather than sell of all the assets to pay off the stadium quickly, while going 8 seasons without a trophy.

Had the board/Wenger been upfront with this policy then fans would be more understanding but they still wanted to charge top dollar and insist the players we had were world class.

At least you got your name right.

If you are still following this chain of posts, then don't forget to factor in the captaincy.

You can have Walcott, Benteke, Benteke (£27,5m (Orig prices))

                or

Brady, Van Persie, Van Persie (£33m)

One the fixtures are good for Van Persie and I'm very confident he will deliver in the next 4 gameweeks. Yes if he doesn't then there is a problem (eggs in one basket), but equally picking an alternate captain isn't easy.
