Scout Scribbles – Rooney Shows His Scars

Wayne Rooney goes public with pictures of the head injury that casts major question marks over his availability for United’s game with Palace. Phil Bardsley returns to the Sunderland frame after the Black Cars lift the right-back’s suspension, Aaron Ramsey is the subject of Arsene Wenger’s praise, while Ian Holloway omits a couple of new signings from Palace’s 25-man squad for the season ahead:

Rooney Reveals Horror Show Injury

Wayne Rooney has taken to Facebook to reveal the extent of his head injury that will keep him out of England’s qualifiers with Moldova and Ukraine. The grizzly picture of Rooney’s head wound, suffered in a training ground collision with team-mate Phil Jones, was accompanied with a statement from the United forward explaining his withdrawal from Roy Hodgson’s squad.

“Some people seem to be questioning my commitment to the England squad and the fact I had to pull out of the two games. There’s nothing I would like more than to be helping the lads in the qualifiers. I’m sure people will see from these images the reason why I won’t be able to play.”

The Scout Says: Hardly pleasant viewing, it’s nonetheless clear from the images that Rooney’s injury is far from straightforward. Described by Theo Walcott as “like something from a horror film”, the severity of the wound will surely delay Rooney’s return to action and make him a real doubt for United’s Gameweek 4 home clash with Crystal Palace. Those considering Rooney as a viable altnerative to cover Robin van Persie’s potential against Ian Holloway’s side will likely have to set their sights elsewhere. While there is no confirmed length of absence, investment in Rooney as a Fantasy option has stalled until we know more.

Bardsley Back in the Black Cats Fold

Phil Bardsley has had his suspension lifted by Sunderland. Disciplinary action was taken against the defender after he appeared to mock his team-mates following the opening day defeat to Fulham via his Instagram account. Bardsley was subsequently suspended from playing duties but has now acknowledged his actions and looks set to focuse on a return to first team duties.

“I would like to apologise to the club and supporters for my comments made on social media. I understand how they may have been interpreted. I accept the punishment that has been handed to me by the football club and will now focus my attention and efforts on rehabilitation and regaining my fitness.”

The Scout Says: With new signing, Ondrej Celustka, settled at right-back so far this term, Bardsley faces an uphill struggle to edge his way into contention for a recall. Having said that, it’s always difficult to anticipate Paolo Di Canio’s thinking when it comes to his teamsheet, having witnessed wholesale changes over the opening Gameweeks. Celustka, at just 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is currently a cheap route into the Sunderland rearguard but short-term investment is very unlikely given current form and, more significantly, a schedule that brings Arsenal, Liverpool and United to the Stadium of Light over the next four Gameweeks.

Ramsey Earns Praise as Diaby Steps Up Recovery

Arsene Wenger has switched attention away from new signing Mesut Ozil to focus on, arguably, Arsenal’s most accomplished performer this season, Aaron Ramsey. The Gunners boss has acknowledged Ramsey’s form, highlighting an increase in strength and finishing ability as the key components to his progress:

“He [Ramsey] has gained a lot of physical power in the last year, no longer struggling in challenges and duels but brushing opponents off and running away from them with ease. It’s a great feeling for a midfielder to do that. On top of that, he’s starting to score – something I always felt he was close to doing because he was often the next guy in the box. To have that in your locker as well is fantastic.”

Abou Diaby is another Arsenal midfielder in the news as he has broken his silence following a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury back in March. Diaby has now stepped up his recovery and is looking ahead to knocking on the first team door.

“I’m working back to my best level and beyond. I want to catch the train and bring something to the team. That’s my objective.”

The Scout Says: Ozil’s arrival offers an obvious new asset in the Arsenal ranks, although Fantasy managers also need to assess the impact he will have on the players around him. Ramsey, in particular, could remain a midfield option and, with a 5.6 FPL price tag, would certainly warrant interest in a side boosted in confidence and scoring goals. It remains to be seen how Ozil’s arrival will impact on his starts. With MIkel Arteta’s return from injury and Jack Wilshere fully fit, Wenger would clearly have a wealth of options in the middle of the park. Certainly, Diaby’s ambitions may have to be tempered. It’s difficult to see an immediate route back into the side for the Frenchman.

Palace Omit New Signings

Crystal Palace have named their 25-man squad for the Premier League campaign, omitting summer signings, Stephen Dobbie and Florian Marange along with Aaron Wilbraham and Owen Garvan. The latter had started the previous three matches prior to the Sunderland victory, while Marange was yet to figure in the league following his summer move from Bordeaux. Ian Holloway signed 16 players during this recent transfer window.

The Scout Says: With so many new faces arriving at Selhurst Park, including what seemed a deadline day scramble, it’s perhaps not surprising to see names culled from the 25-man squad. Holloway’s options, particularly in wide areas, looks bewildering and it’s incredibly difficult to assess what his likely first choice starting XI will be. Fantasy managers who have already invested in Palace as a source of budget talent can now only sit back and hope that their assets remains intact but, with competition for starts all over the pitch, it’s clear it will take a number of weeks before we can run the rule over Palace’s potential with any real certainty. It’s worth noting that Under 21 players – such as Jonathan Williams – are available for selection over and above the 25-man limit; hence the youngster’s omission from the list.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Agreed. I just don't see who's place he will take at city. Negredo and dzeko seem to have that top spot between them. Silva and aguero are nailed on and navas seem to be his preferred winger. And then there is nasri and Milner to contend with.

Man Utd v Crystal Palace is the 12:45 game next Saturday.

I'm on my wildcard and want to take a punt on a Man Utd midfielder for one GW only and then switch to Lampard the following week.

Any chance we will have any indication of the possible Man utd line-up before the deadline? I would love to take a punt on Nani if he started.

Im in a RVP or no RVP dilemma - always planned to bring him in for Gw4 but with united not scoring goals and them being the early kick off (never bring lots of goals) i dont know whether to spread my money into my midfield instead.

    B) Benteke & Walcott

Does anyone know of somewhere I could get detailed stats for Lamela last season? Not just how many he scored etc, but which games too.

I know he's an undoubted talent, and he's most likely going in my team. People are talking about his 15 goals last season, but alot of that would have been ultra attacking coach Zeman, where he would have been expected to score alot.

Just wondering if the goals are something to be expected again or if it was more due to the system.

Why are you picking Lampard for 8+?

Since 2006/2007 season, he's scored more than 12 goals twice, and one of those was last season. Last season is likely an anomaly as the only time in his career he had consecutive seasons with more than 12 goal was 04-05 & 05-06.

In the last 3 seasons combined he's had 10 assists including a very sad 1 assist in 1900 minutes of play last season. Up until 09/10, 10+ assists in a single season was a given for him.

He started the season well and was a good punt for the DGW. But while I remember the good times with him in my team in the past, he belongs on a team now like Bellamy belongs being my 3rd striker, or like picking up Barry because he's on penalties for Villa.

(and yes, I know Bellamy is technically a midfielder this season, and that Barry is on Everton, I'm referring to dated material)

Pens, freekicks, corners (I think), looks nailed on so far and is incredibly attacking against weaker sides. He'd have had 16 points from the Hull game if he hadn't missed his penalty.

Goals are what you need out of midfield this year, and Frank is one of the few who consistently delivers them. At 8m he's one of only two midfielders I'm absolutely sure I want (Walcott being the other).

No one knows as yet. Toure has arguably been L'pool's best defender this year, however will Sakho be stuck on the bench given his price tag? They could both play with Agger being dropped, but I can't see that happening as he's very much a ball playing centre half and fits into Rodgers' passing football.

Rogers' comments on Sakho make very promising reading for a fan of the Frenchman.

He likened his leadership and strength to that of Carragher and intimated that he would be the rock on which his team was built.

Sakho is a top player, h'll be in that side in no time and will not be moved out.

I wasn't aware he said that about Sakho, but I certainly know he compared Toure to Carragher at the start of the season as well as on Sky Sports.

I agree Sakho is a very good player but it's not clear cut that he will start:

"Those two players, especially Sakho, can play in the team now, but we've got one eye on the future as well."

"....he's really powerful, quick and offers us balance as well as he can play left-side centre-half or at left-back - means there is real hot competition, not just in games but every day in training, and that will see us improve."

What's up with the price rises this season, how are we meant to make money if the players are not rising, e.g: James collins been up for a rise all week and hasn't risen.

Pretty much all the players that should rise have. In fact Collins is the only one who is teetering on the edge. He got many new suitors last week but after conceding on Saturday along with up coming fixtures, almost as many people have got rid of him as bought him.
For example only 89 people have bought him today, I'm not sure he'll rise.

    Some tough questions ahead.
    1. Do the Coutinho owners hang on for a few more weeks or get rid until Suarez returns whereby he shifts in to the hole?
    2. Are there any managers willing to triple up on Arsenal? Wally and Giroud will benefit greatly from 3. Ozil, but he himself will get 20+ assists.
    3. Benteke's fixture proof ability or Soldado's lovely fixtures?
    4. Are the concerns over Silva? He looks a little short of something, and always looks most likely to be subbed.

1 - you chose him for a reason, now you are going to take him out for not scoring in 3 games...
2 - if you think Arsenal will do good over the next few games, why would you not have 3 players?
3 - if you think both strikers will do well, get both...
4 - don't get any City players, if you do, accept the fact they will be rotated/rested

Given Arsenal's fixtures, uncertainty over Chelsea midfield starters, and due to the fact that I'm a I'm a little wary of Spurs' attacking prowess, I can see me replacing Mirallas with Ozil with my 3.0m bank next gameweek and doubling with Walcott.

Valid tactic? Will leave me no Chelsea or Spurs cover though, but if Arsenal are blitzing these lower teams every week surely the Theo and Ozil will be nailed on and racking up the points!

It's actually the anomaly which is going to keep a lot of people in contention who otherwise wouldn't be.

People are wrong to be going defence heavy based on the unusually low amount of goals so far, but they're accidentally right to be going defence heavy because the rules have significantly boosted defenders this year and gutted midfield. The latter by itself would not have become apparent to most people until much later in the season - the results have just conspired to give people a shove in the right direction.

Haha I know, I really am being swayed towards him. I can just see him going absolutely crazy over the upcoming gameweeks and everyone will be scrambling to get him in, taking -4 hits. I'd rather get him in with my wildcard now than have to do that. However, my decision is subject to change and I will probably end up not even putting him in. The non RVP team looks so much nicer on the whole. What are these rumours of in-fighting?

      Progress.

I think you're a bit late to cash in on double rise investments now. Sturridge and Hernandez may still be in with a shot but both have already risen 0.1m. Giroud has already gone up 0.2m.

I look for players that are 'trending' over players on a certain percentage because that second rise is the key.

Collins, for example, was sat on about 99% for three days with a net positive of a few hundred transfers in each evening when i checked.

Giroud on the other hand was on about 60% or so but had huge percentage change for the day with upwards of 30,000 transfers in each day. He's already had back to back rises in a short space of time and continues to be on trend.

Hernandez and Yaya Toure are probably the next two in terms of likelihood to earn you a bankable profit, neither of whom i plan to keep, though i am riding on both's popularity.

Ozil will rise once his price is free to do so, so make sure you get his arse in your side in a week

Thanks for the 'trending' tip, being able to decipher between the various channels of what instigates a price rise should help me out on this WC GW (first time playing it over International Break).

As much as I would like to catch the inevitable Ozil price rise, I think there is more value in me having Walcott and Giroud along with an Arsenal defender (probably Kos) for their run of fixtures. Unfortunately I wont be able to shoehorn in 'Nemo'.

All of them were tap in's (although his last tap in against arsenal was masterful), although it's a sign of a good team around him i don't think he'll keep it up. Ozil introduction does help him though. I wouldn't of get him in but I wouldn't of sold time until he proved me right.
