Moving Target

Moving Target – Stephen Ireland

In a somewhat surprising transfer deadline-day deal, Stoke boss Mark Hughes snapped up midfielder Stephen Ireland on a season-long loan from Aston Villa. The 27-year-old is the fifth new arrival at the Britannia this term and follows Erik Pieters, Marc Muniesa, Marko Arnautovic and Oussama Assaidi to the club as Hughes looks to restructure the Potters’ playing approach after succeeding Tony Pulis over the summer:

Speaking to the club’s official website, the Stoke Chief Executive Tony Scholes revealed the player’s previous performances under Hughes at the Etihad persuaded the Potters boss to acquire his services:

“Stephen is a player that Mark knows really well and when the opportunity arose he was keen to add him to his midfield and attacking options. Arguably the most successful period of Stephen’s career to date was when he played for Mark at Manchester City and we hope that he can rediscover that form.”

The History

A product of the Man City youth academy, Ireland joined the club at the age of 15 back in August 2001. The midfielder made his debut during the 2004/05 season but took his time to make an impact, producing a single goal and pair of assists across 47 appearances in his first couple of campaigns at the club.

After notching four goals and three assists in 33 appearances the following year, Ireland’s nine goals and nine assists in 35 league games across 2008/09 earned him City’s Player of the Year award under the guidance of Hughes but he failed to maintain his consistency. The Welshman’s dismissal in the early stages of the following season saw Ireland become a peripheral figure under Roberto Mancini and, after producing just two goals and a pair of assists, he was transferred to Aston Villa as part of the deal that took James Milner to the Etihad.

Ireland’s time in the midlands proved bitterly disappointing as his once-promising career began to fall apart. Over the next three years, he failed to convince a trio of managers and was handed a combined tally of 47 games by Gerard Houllier, Alex McLeish and Paul Lambert, producing just a single goal and four assists.

The Prospects

With just a year left of his contract at Villa, Ireland’s switch to Stoke means he is now effectively playing for his future. Despite failing to feature this term so far, the midfielder insists he is fully match sharp and is desperate to make an impact at the Britannia:

“I’m fit and raring to go. I don’t want to be eased in and I don’t want to have to take my time; I just want to get straight in there as fast as I can. I want to participate in whatever way I can, whether that be for the full 90 minutes or whether it be coming off the bench for the final five minutes. Whatever time I get I will give it everything I have. It’s been a long time in the waiting for me so I want to get going and show everyone what I am capable of.”

To an extent, Ireland’s situation mirrors that of his manager. Hughes was also written off by many after a hugely unsuccessful stint at QPR led to his dismissal last term and the pair have plenty to prove this time out – the new Stoke manager’s tactics are steadily making an impact, however, and have now harvested three straight wins in all competitions after a narrow Gameweek 1 defeat at Liverpool.

As the Staffordshire outfit become more accustomed to their new manager’s possession-based approach, it’s clear we can no longer view them in the same way as we once did under Pulis. Hughes’ 4-4-1-1 formation could certainly favour Ireland and hand Fantasy managers an intriguing cut-price prospect if he can nail down his preferred role in “the hole” behind a lone forward, though it’s uncertain whether he’ll be immediately handed a starting berth.

Indeed, much depends on where fellow new boy Marko Arnautovic ends up. If the six foot three Austrian – classified as a midfielder across the Fantasy games – is utilised as a lone forward, then he looks the one to consider, though a shift to the right flank would likely see Jon Walters moved into the middle, thus denting Ireland’s prospects.

Coming in at a mere 4.8 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 4.4 in the Sky Sports game, his lack of impact over the past few seasons means Ireland is particularly budget friendly. Fantasy managers will be understandably sceptical but if Hughes can help reignite the potential that saw him shine at the Etihad, we may have an unlikely cut-price contender on our hands.

    At 4.8m he's worth a little consideration as a 5th mid.

Eriksen is a very promising player but not one with too many proven goals and assists. Stepping up from the Eridivisie to the BPL is not that easy plus he has competition from Holtby & Siggy. Lamela definitely not worth 9.0mn. Will take time to adapt to the PL and the fact that Spurs have made so many new signings they will take time to gel as a unit. Just because he scored 15 goals for Roma playing in a very advanced position does not mean anything.
Do not see either of them being real FPL prospects this season.

You must have missed all the very good performances that Eriksen has put in in the CL over the past 3 seasons. Additionally over recent seasons I can't think of many/any Eredivisie players that have failed to prove themselves very quickly in the PL

Both are young very promising players but I cant see them doing the business FPL wise. Lamela also has been more about the goals last season, a tally which he wont match this season. Regarding eriksen I feel he could be good value at 7mn in the future, with lack of security of starts and not the best stats fro a CAM im not convinced.

Ok well I shall contest that Özil will not be able to replicate his success because it was down to the quality of the side he was playing in. The step down to Arsenal will not be easy for him and he will not be provided the freedom to be as prolific an assist provider he has been.

Of course I, like you, base this solely on personal opinion.

Ozil is one of the best CAM's around and is a proven talent as opposed to Lamela & Eriksen. Its true that he wont have the same calibre of players around him but Arsenal have always done well attacking wise and they can only get better and more dangerous with ozil in their side. Not sure if he will justify his price tag since the goals will be heavily distributed between each of the front 4 (Giroud,Walcott & Santi) but he's definitely a better, more explosive and safer pick than the other 2 even at that price.

      Hey guys, A or B?

      A) Lampard/Eriksen + Hernandez

      B) Michu + Brady

Rest of front 8 looks like this:

B.Arfa, Walcott, Redmond; Benteke, RVP, Sturridge

Coutinho is matching or exceeding Yaya in every category besides goals already scored (which are FKs and unlikely to continue at the same rate).

Did I say he wouldn't? He won't score a 2 FKs every 3 games from now on, will he and is only averaging 1 other shot per game, all off target. I'm just saying that table hardly puts him ahead of Coutinho as an option.

Yes, it does. And like many here, you consistently underestimate Yaya's abilities. 🙂

PS His shots are NOT all off target. I have been using him for two Seasons.

He has 2 shots on target, both of them goals from FKs. Therefore his other 3 shots were off target... I don't underestimate his ability, simply don't think is worth anywhere near 8.9m. 🙂

        No one knows.

It depends on how highly Rodgers rates Aspas/Henderson.

I personally hope for FPL sake their front 4 will end up being Cout in the 'hole', Sturridge up top and Moses & Suarez on the wings.

      Mig 4.0
      Vidic - Nasty - B Davies - Collins - Burner
      Walcott - HBA - Hernandez - Brady - WardProwse
      RVP - Benteke - Giroud

Think I've decided to stick to this WC:

      Mignolet, Kelvin Davis
      Coleman, Mertesacker, Zabaleta, Chambers, Chester
      Brady, Ward-Prowse, Lampard, Walcott, Eriksen
      Sturridge, Giroud, van Persie

Yes it's a bit templatey, but it feels like it has the right balance.

      Thoughts?

Demi's FPL thrills topic got me feeling all nostalgic. Of course, with nostalgia comes the abandoning of all logic.

Does anyone ever miss the old captaincy systems? For those that weren't around or choose to erase it from their memory: if your captain didn't play, the captaincy automatically moved to the player in your final team (after autosubs) that had either the highest form or highest value. You chose which of the criteria would be applied.

Used to be a cause for much heated debate round here. Especially when combined with autosubs and cancelled games. For those inclined to create FPL Rube Goldberg machines, you could have three scoring high scoring substitutes including your captain come off the bench and double or even triple your gameweek score.

Or even further back - when if your captain didn't play, you didn't get a captain. There were no risks taken with injury in those days.

Overall I think having a VC is the best way.

Ivanovic Lescott Collins (Clyne & Whittaker)

      Theo Snodgrass Silva Nolan (Pennant)

      Soldado Sturridge Lambert

I have 2.9 in the bank. Really wanted upgrade Lambert to Giroud/Benteke but with he has 2 good fixtures in his next 3. Maybe i can hold off? Please help.

Whilst Ozil's assist stats are out of this world, we have to remember he had Ronaldo finishing a lot of those chances... will he be as successful at Arsenal? is his price tag justified?

I am looking forward to the outcome.

One could argue that Iniesta and Xavi have great assist rates because they have Messi finishing a lot of their chances.

Ozil is a player of undeniable class, one of the best midfielders in the world who can assist and score with ease.

Price tag (on FPL and in real life) is justified in my opinion.

Good team tbh but too short term in defence, Dawson could be dropped soon, Rio injury prone + will need to be kept fresh for champions league, I have Gibbs and he's also injury prone plus Monreal could easily take his place for some games, Wisdom obviously very short term too. But for this week alone that defence is pretty good
