Scout Notes – Gameweek 4 – Sunday

With two of the league’s meanest backlines going head-to-head we probably shouldn’t be surprised by the outcome. Yesterday’s goalless clash at St Mary’s was a day to forget as the clean sheet returns continue to arrive at a frantic pace:

Saints Burgeoning Backline
Mauricio Pochettino’s side may be toiling up top but when it comes to keeping out their opponents, Southampton are proving one of the most reliable around. The 0-0 draw against West Ham means that the Saints have now conceded just twice in the first four Gameweeks and have maintained the solidity that saw that ship just nine goals in the last 10 fixtures of the previous campaign. The upcoming schedule hints at more of the same – home games against Palace, Swansea, Fulham and Hull, supplemented with a trip to Stoke in the next seven continue to make Artur Boruc look a real bargain between the sticks, while Jose Fonte is benefitting substantially from the new Bonus Points System and is now up to 28 points in Fantasy Premier league (FPL), third top for defenders. Luke Shaw’s owners will be somewhat relieved after the left-back was subbed off towards the end of the match – injury fears were quickly allayed when he took to twitter to reveal his withdrawal was merely down to cramp.

Jaaskelainen the Hammers Hero
Another game, another clean sheet for Sam Allardyce’s side as the Hammers had Jussi Jaaskelainen to thank for a number of crucial saves. The Finnish stopper has moved up to second in the keeper rankings thanks to yesterday’s endeavours, with an extra save point and couple of bonus points taking his tally to 24 for the season – four more than any other West Ham defensive option. With four fixtures done and dusted, Jaaskelainen has been beaten just once, in a narrow 1-0 defeat at home to Stoke last time out, and with a home clash against an Everton side with a single goal in three preceding a trip to Hull, those holding West Ham defensive options will be optimistic of further returns. Back-to-back matches against Spurs, City, Swansea and Villa from Gameweek 7 onwards will test Wet Ham’s resolve, though Jaaskelainen can be expected to pick up plenty of save points to further his impressive tally.

Hammers Lack Cutting Edge
Yesterday’s result merely underlines just how much the Hammers miss the influence of Andy Carroll up top. Having finished the previous season with four goals and three assists in his final seven games, Carroll was expected to rack up the points in light of West Ham’s kind run of fixtures but his absence of injury has hindered the Hammers – barring a 2-0 win over Cardiff in Gameweek 1, they have stuttered in front of goal and have now registered three successive blanks. Carroll’s absence has clearly dented Kevin Nolan’s Fantasy appeal and with Modibo Maiga unable to over the same sort of threat up top, Allardyce will be desperate for free signing Mladen Petric to prove his fitness as he looks for alternatives in a desperate bid to turn the draws into victories.

Another Blank for Lambert
While West Ham can cite Carroll’s absence as a legitimate reason for their blunted attack, Pochettino’s side have no such excuses. The Saints boss fielded club record signing Pablo Osvaldo alongside Rickie Lambert up top as he opted for a 4-4-2 with Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez on the flanks but the former AS Roma man failed to reproduce the form that saw him notch 16 times in Serie A last time. For as much as they have impressed at the back, it seems this resolve has come at the cost of Southampton’s attacking ability – they have now scored a mere five times in their last 10 league games, with Rickie Lambert scoring just twice (once from open play) over that run. The England forward’s owners will likely keep faith due to the above-mentioned run of games but he’ll need to start producing to prevent a Fantasy exodus.

Post-match, Pochettino reckons much has to do with changing the dynamic to accommodate new boy Osvaldo but is convinced the results will soon arrive:

“There has been a lot more chemistry between all of our attacking players. Osvaldo arrived late to the group, so it is natural that it takes a little longer to get into the form of the team. You can see they are starting to mix well together, so it is only a matter of time before things start to work out positively for us.”

He's pretty far from fit, I think he can be an option for their good fixtures for those who don't want to change their team too much. Plan is for me to have 2FTs next GW so I can assess the situation, but it's tough to drop a 9-ish million striker at the moment, they all look good!

      Keepers - check

      Midfield - okay

Mirallas => Barfa and if you have money then Dzeko => Giroud too.

I could take a hit and lose Theo.

Walcott, Dzeko, Mirallas --> Barfa, Eriksen, Giroud

Would still leave all the junk in my team. JWP, Kim, Toure, Kos...

I'd rather lose Soldado or Coutinho than Theo, but it's bit of coin toss really.
3 transfers would be the way to go, but very difficult to find that cash for dzeko => giroud.

mirallas, dzeko, soldado => barfa, giroud, benteke
or like you say theo/cout => eriksen

You have a problem with your 3 attacking players who doesn't seem to be guaranteed gametime (JWP, Kim and Dzeko). Out of those, I'd be the most worried about JWP and Dzeko. Maybe get Lambo and Brady if you can afford?

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

David Moyes has said he plans to field Wayne Rooney up front with Robin Van Persie and expects him to score around 30 goals this season.

    http://www.theguardian.com/football/2013/sep/15/david-moyes-wayne-rooney-30-goals

Is Wayne Rooney (£10.5m in FPL) actually a credible alternative to Robin Van Persie (£14m in FPL)?

I had that exact same thought Saturday night as I looked at the out dated waste land that was my cheap defence, lack of Giroud and RVP and just pushed the wildcard button there and then.

Rooney was a poor option last season as he was dropped so much and played as a centre midfielder. Moyes wants him to attack and history says he's rather good at that. That extra 3.5m is the difference between two ok defenders or getting Evra/Vidic or Vert/Walker.

After the City game this week, Man U have only Tot and Chelsk away of the top teams in the next twenty GWs.

Rooney was however terrible against Palace - the freekick was the only thing he got right. If Moyes ever puts a little faith in Kagawa he could easily push Rooney out of the starting role. RVP will always play.

There is a danger of confusing real football with fantasy football. 3 bonus pts and a goal says his actual performance is irrelevant if he continues to take his chances and tick all the right bonus boxes.

If I can then get Nolan - Eriksen done with the loose change - and nothing drastic happens at the back - I am really starting to like my team.

This season I see rooney yielding more than rvp.And if rooney was still on penalty kicks there would b noone ahead of rooney. But without penalty too I see rooney retaining his place as main man in utd team.

After Arsenal's best start for years, are they title contenders, or have they just played poor teams?

Spurs are still settling into their new system, before they accuse me of saying they are poor.

I think they have to be, especially as the other big teams haven't really started well.

I still think our squad is too light, especially up front and in defence, but if we can avoid losing any more players to injury between now and Jan, and we spend again, then maybe. Very open this year imo.

You have to say they are....

Everyone was saying Chelsea and City will be 1 and 2 this year preseason with their new signings and managers, but Arsenal, Liverpool and Tott have also made huge strides and it will surely be the closest title race in recent history with probably 6 teams fighting for it all the way.

I'd say Arsenal haven't got the depth that the other big spenders have to push for the title. Spurs on the other hand have a massive squad filled with quality and no pressure on them whatsoever. They should push for the title and if AVB doesn't finish top four with that bunch then he deserves to get the shove.

    Arnautovic

He was talked up a little on here in the last couple of weeks and I was skeptical. But I saw him on MOTD and I was quite impressed. Similar shots-per-minute to RVP as well, which isn't everything but is still rather impressive, considering their respective opposition.

Sparky's Stoke are actually looking quite revitalised and their fixtures take a turn for the better soon too (NOR, ful, WBA, mun, SOT after this week)

    At £5.5 I'm very interested.

That's fair enough, but not very useful, as it would have been very hard to be in the top not having had Giroud and Benteke. When - or if - RvP start outscoring them, RvP owners will rise. This is just simple math - those who have had the highest points scorers are at the top.

I know I'm in the minority with this, but considering taking out Benteke.
Villa only had one shot on target against NEW, have lost their last three games, and have tough fixtures to come.

Would take him out for Sturridge to give IMO the best possible strikeforce; Sturridge, Giroud, Soldado (Provided Giroud/Sturridge are fit?)

    What do we all think?

P.S. It makes me laugh when people blame the community for advising on decisions that pay off.

I was convinced on here to go RVP-less with my WC (given me 13 extra pts so far) and to go with Benteke over Sturridge due to the injury doubt (looks good so far, cue Sturridge hattrick)
    Thanks people!

I understand your point about lack of chances for Benteke and that's the only reason I'm wary, but if he has only 1 shot and scores it every time (as he seems to do) then why do it. In the top points scorers of the game.

Realistically you wont go wrong with any out of Benteke, Sturridge or Giroud. As it stands they are the focal points of their teams attacks with no realistic competition for their roles, and with the last two being in teams which are playing especially well.

Soldado may have had a hatful of chances, but he is yet to convert them in open play in the league. The above three have. I have no doubt once Eriksen, Lamela and Soldado gel they will be a force to be reckoned with, but I'd rather spend 9 million on a proven performer.

Good point, am considering Soldado/Someone out for Eriksen/Sturridge with my 2FT, unless Sold explodes against Cardiff.

        Thanks.

Villa concede a lot of goals, so they have to attack all the time. Benteke is the focal point.

    Any changes needed?

    Mignolet (Davis)
    Coleman, Zabaleta, Collins (Chester, Ward)
Walcott, Lampard, Ben Arfa, Hernandez (Barkley)
    RVP, Sturridge, Benteke

    Cheers!

Tough call between sturridge and giroud, you're in the same quandary most RVP owners find themselves in.

Very good team regardless. Maybe get Ramsey in there for Hernandez? . You may be chasing points in sequence there but Arsenal as a team seem to be worth more investment than Swansea, and Ramsey should get a good run of games until Cazorla returns.

May be completely off the mark with these but some pointers...

    1. Jagielka and Hangeland are some essential defenders to get in, one or the other in my opinion.
    2. Silva is likely to be fit for the Manchester Derby so don't think we all need to knee-jerk sell him.
    3. Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham have delicious fixtures GW5, cheeky penalty from Soldado?
    4. West Ham lost last 3 games 0 goals... Everton are on fine form, can't call it.
    5. If Michu doesn't score/assist GW4 (tonight) might be worth selling in my opinion.

    What do you guys/ladies think?

agree with 2 and 3 and 5 as i think Hernandez is good value, id rather have Coleman over Jagielka simply cos Coleman is always bombing forward
