Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 4 – Sunday

With two of the league’s meanest backlines going head-to-head we probably shouldn’t be surprised by the outcome. Yesterday’s goalless clash at St Mary’s was a day to forget as the clean sheet returns continue to arrive at a frantic pace:

Saints Burgeoning Backline
Mauricio Pochettino’s side may be toiling up top but when it comes to keeping out their opponents, Southampton are proving one of the most reliable around. The 0-0 draw against West Ham means that the Saints have now conceded just twice in the first four Gameweeks and have maintained the solidity that saw that ship just nine goals in the last 10 fixtures of the previous campaign. The upcoming schedule hints at more of the same – home games against Palace, Swansea, Fulham and Hull, supplemented with a trip to Stoke in the next seven continue to make Artur Boruc look a real bargain between the sticks, while Jose Fonte is benefitting substantially from the new Bonus Points System and is now up to 28 points in Fantasy Premier league (FPL), third top for defenders. Luke Shaw’s owners will be somewhat relieved after the left-back was subbed off towards the end of the match – injury fears were quickly allayed when he took to twitter to reveal his withdrawal was merely down to cramp.

Jaaskelainen the Hammers Hero
Another game, another clean sheet for Sam Allardyce’s side as the Hammers had Jussi Jaaskelainen to thank for a number of crucial saves. The Finnish stopper has moved up to second in the keeper rankings thanks to yesterday’s endeavours, with an extra save point and couple of bonus points taking his tally to 24 for the season – four more than any other West Ham defensive option. With four fixtures done and dusted, Jaaskelainen has been beaten just once, in a narrow 1-0 defeat at home to Stoke last time out, and with a home clash against an Everton side with a single goal in three preceding a trip to Hull, those holding West Ham defensive options will be optimistic of further returns. Back-to-back matches against Spurs, City, Swansea and Villa from Gameweek 7 onwards will test Wet Ham’s resolve, though Jaaskelainen can be expected to pick up plenty of save points to further his impressive tally.

Hammers Lack Cutting Edge
Yesterday’s result merely underlines just how much the Hammers miss the influence of Andy Carroll up top. Having finished the previous season with four goals and three assists in his final seven games, Carroll was expected to rack up the points in light of West Ham’s kind run of fixtures but his absence of injury has hindered the Hammers – barring a 2-0 win over Cardiff in Gameweek 1, they have stuttered in front of goal and have now registered three successive blanks. Carroll’s absence has clearly dented Kevin Nolan’s Fantasy appeal and with Modibo Maiga unable to over the same sort of threat up top, Allardyce will be desperate for free signing Mladen Petric to prove his fitness as he looks for alternatives in a desperate bid to turn the draws into victories.

Another Blank for Lambert
While West Ham can cite Carroll’s absence as a legitimate reason for their blunted attack, Pochettino’s side have no such excuses. The Saints boss fielded club record signing Pablo Osvaldo alongside Rickie Lambert up top as he opted for a 4-4-2 with Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez on the flanks but the former AS Roma man failed to reproduce the form that saw him notch 16 times in Serie A last time. For as much as they have impressed at the back, it seems this resolve has come at the cost of Southampton’s attacking ability – they have now scored a mere five times in their last 10 league games, with Rickie Lambert scoring just twice (once from open play) over that run. The England forward’s owners will likely keep faith due to the above-mentioned run of games but he’ll need to start producing to prevent a Fantasy exodus.

Post-match, Pochettino reckons much has to do with changing the dynamic to accommodate new boy Osvaldo but is convinced the results will soon arrive:

“There has been a lot more chemistry between all of our attacking players. Osvaldo arrived late to the group, so it is natural that it takes a little longer to get into the form of the team. You can see they are starting to mix well together, so it is only a matter of time before things start to work out positively for us.”

Going to do Coutinho to Eriksen this week. Saving next week's transfer and doing RVP to Giroud the following week. Was planning to use the funds to upgrade Ramsey to Walcott. After the weekend's performance, think it's worth keeping Ramsey and spending the cash elsewhere?

Ramsey will get chances, Ozil composure on the ball allows players to run beyond him. Khedira done it a lot at Madrid.

      - Snodgrass the closest to nailed on but is in poor form
      - Pilkington/Redmond competing on the left wing
      - Hughton is the anti-rotation king

    GW1: Shaw (12)
    GW2: Terry (8) & Collins (6)
    GW3: N/A
    GW4: Collins (6)

Means I have benched 31 points in defenders over only 4 GWs. Taking away the points from the defenders I did play instead, leaves me with a net loss of 21 points 😯
Would make a huge difference to my overall rank at this early stage if I could only pick the right defenders 🙁

In terms of opportunities, Walcott is streets ahead of other mids - clearly the issue is he's not taking them but that will come, I reckon. If there were other heavy-hitters performing then I could understand the twitch but right now nobody over 8.0 in midfield seems likely to offer consistency.

Can Giroud keep up this unbelievable strike-rate of his? I’ve been digging in the members area and I’m not convinced yet.

His 4 goals have come from 5 shots on Target! That’s an 80% conversion of SoT.
Van Persie had 26 goals from 63 SoT (41.73%) last season and that was considered a very high conversion rate.
Bale by comparison had 21 goals from 73 SoT (28.75%) and this was probably just about above average.

If you look at it in a per appearance basis, then it perhaps suggest that Giroud is having a lot of attempts but doesn’t hit the target regularly.
Giroud has fired off 4.5 shots per game with 1.2 SoT (26%), and 3.5 shots in box (78%)
RvP in 2012/13 fired off just 3.7 shots per game with 1.7 SoT (46%), and 2.7 shots in box (73%)
Bale in 2012/13 fired off 5 shots per game with 2.2 SoT (44%), and just 2.1 shots in box (42%)

Is Giroud the new Suarez. Loads of attempts but very few on target. I think a few things can happen.

    1. He will continue to be wasteful in terms of SoT but his conversion of those will regress and thus his output will not be as good.
    2. He will regress with the conversion rate but will turn more of the attempts into SoT and thus not affecting his current output rate.
    3. I think his current rate of 4.5 shots per game is not quite maintainable. Bale fired of 5 per game last season but as we know he shot on sight and had only 42% of his efforts in the box. RvP had 3.7 shots per game but had a similar shots in box rate (73% vs. 78%).

The reason I’ve done this is I am considering a -4 for Walcott and Lambert to Giroud and AN Other.
I don't think I'm quite convinced yet. Is Giroud living beyond his means

The fact is Arsenal have very little depth when it comes to forwards so he will always play and he has creative talent in abundance behind him. Cazorla/Ozil/Walcott is one of the best sets of attacking midfielders in the league.

Giroud's specialities have been his aerial ability, strength and his clinicality - not necessarily his ability to get lots of shots off quickly.

He is the sort of player who would take a while to bed into the team as his style of play is very reliant on reading his team-mates passes. His aerial ability and strength were enough to tide him through the last season with a decent goal return.

A more relevant statistic would be to see how he had performed in his second season at the clubs he has been at.

Iv gone uber cheap at the back so i can maximise my forwarrd options, the defence all rotates reallly nicely which is important. Plan to do Gerrard > Michu in the near future

    Cheers

Yeah, Gerrard's the only question mark I have, taking your strategy into account.

    Mig (Boruc)
    Coleman - Ivanovic - Fonte - Collins - Whittaker
    Coutinho - Silva - Ozil - Barkley - WP
    Benteke - Giroud - Sturridge
    0.9m in bank, 1FT

    a) Collins > Dawson
    b) Silva > Eriksen
    c) Coutinho > Eriksen
    d) Barkley > Ramsey (Arsenal overkill?)

    Cheers!

I need a midfielder to replace Nani. Most tempting teams next GW look like Chelsea (v Fulham), Spurs (at Cardiff) and Swansea (at Palace)

Ramires looked excellent on Saturday. Am I right in thinking he's suspended from ECL for one game following his sending off in the Super Cup final?

For the other teams I'm looking at whichever of Siggy, Routledge and Dyer don't play midweek as they are most likely to be nailed on

    Thoughts?

Looking to get HBA but not keen on offloading any of these 3:

    Wally
    Oscar
    Mirallas

Don't know why I even bother putting Wally on the list. Looks like Mirallas could be in for a price drop so might just do him, guaranteed he will score next week though!

    3 questions..

    A - Eriksen or Sugurdson?
I think Eriksen will get more minutes and will proabably be more consistent over the season

B- I need to seel either Benteke or Giroud? What do you think?
I think Giroud can heavily benefit from Arsenal's midfield. he's the only legitimate striker in the suade so rather than spending 10 on Cazorla or Ozil, I think it's wide to only keep one player from the gunners and that would be Giroud. Benteke is very consistent though.. :-/ tough decision

C- Chelsea's central defense. Is Terry a safe pick? He's been havng a lot of game time under Mourinho's orders. I wanted to wait for Luiz' return to see what's will be the plan but it looks like Cahill will be the becnhed one.

Hello all, first time poster here.

    Any suggestions for this team:

    Vorm - Marshall

    Coleman - Wisdom - Collins - Gabbindon - Chester

Ben Arfa - Walcott - Moses - Mirallas - Whittingham

    Giroud - Benteke - RVP

    1.7m bank

I'm basically concerned about my defense in the upcoming weeks, and wondering whether to go RVP-->Rooney/Soldado to get in the likes of Hangeland/Dawson and Ivanovic/Nastacic/Ferdinand. Would probably require a hit to get it done fast. Could also stick and upgrade one defender next week, but can't afford the big guns then, only Hangeland or Dawson. Any midfield concerns I'm not spotting that would take priority if I sell RVP?

    Thanks!
