The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Monday

On a night that saw Jonjo Shelvey play a part in all four goals, we witnessed Michu notch his first of the season, while Daniel Sturridge maintained his relentless scoring streak with a fourth goal in four games. With Victor Moses impressing on debut and injury concerns surrounding Dan Agger and Pablo Hernandez, Monday’s encounter offered plenty for Fantasy managers to consider.

The Game Changer

Michu’s sweetly struck half volley from Shelvey’s smart knockdown issued a timely reminder of his talents. Up until tonight, Michu was amongst an array of several heavy hitting midfielders who have failed to live up to their pre-season billing. While Philippe Coutinho continued to toil without returns for Liverpool before being subbed with a shoulder injury, tonight’s strike from Michu promoted him in our thinking.

With Pablo Hernandez potentially sidelined with a hamstring problem, Michu stands out as Swansea’s key attacking asset as they embark on a run of friendly league fixtures in the weeks ahead. Having dropped to 8.9 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) after a run of sales, Michu may just be set to replicate the kind of form that saw him strike 18 goals from midfield in his debut season.

The Underused

A cult hero on these pages, Victor Moses announced himself to his new supporters with an encouraging display and a debut goal. Having suffered limited opportunities at Stamford Bridge, Moses is set to be given the freedom of the Liverpool left flank by Brendan Rodgers and his pace, power and trickery troubled the Swans all evening. With an eye for goal and the likes of Sturridge and Luis Suarez to convert his supply, Moses is owned by less than 1% of Fantasy managers but already looks good value at 6.2 in the FPL.

The Selection Poser

There were two notable absentees from the evening’s teamsheets as both Dan Agger and Pablo Hernandez missed out. Liverpool’s Danish defender picked up a knock in training on Sunday which saw him sidelined – he is expected to return to the fold for the home clash with Southampton, however. That would signal a shake-up in the Liverpool back four which currently has Kolo Toure, Martin Skrtel, Mamado Sakho and Andre Wisdom battling for two starting berths.

Hernandez’s situation is less certain. Michael Laudrup confirmed a hamstring injury prior to the game and stated that the Spanish winger could be out “for a week or two”. Hernandez had enjoyed an outstanding start to the campaign, attracting sizeable investment which had led to a FPL price hike to 6.2. Seemingly a major doubt for the trip to Crystal Palace, it remains to be seen if his owners hold firm ahead of Swansea’s favourable schedule.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Ha...you were certainly sold short. Couldn't understand the ref's decision to sin bin Du Plessis on the first one when the TMO told him the tackle was perfectly fair.

On saying that though, Du Plessis knew he was already on a yellow so so throw out a short arm jab with his elbow was pure braindead behaviour.

I think the issue is in the way the refs ask the TMO. When he went upstairs for AB first try he made up his mind it was a try, and ask if there is any reason not to award the try.

With the Carter tackle it seems the TMO was more interested in the fisty cuffs after the tackle. Ideally he should have been in a position to let the ref know it was a legit tackle. End off. It turned out to rob the spectators of a potentially good game.

          Point 1 - agreed.

Point 2 - ref had already made his mind up to sin bin him. Think he was influenced by the crowd tbh. Yep, that first half was as good as it gets in test match rugby and really spoilt the game. Won't see any better game in the NH imo.

    Question for members:

Why do many join both FFS leagues (members and non members)? If members is above the normal league it would demonstrate how being a member is a distinct advantage. In my opinion it would encourage others to pay the fees and support the site better.

Said as a non fee paying member (mainly because I like to play on hunches than stats, more fun).

    Coutinho debate.
Regardless of how well he played or how lost he looked. My only concern is his FPL points haul which for £9m has been awful. He can be the best player on the fi
Led for 38 prem games per year but if he's not converting FPL points then its not good enough for me.

Before the game I said he would have to go iF he didn't get me a goal/assist or3 bps so regardless of injury or not he's going.

    Who for though?

My tactic was 2 premium mids (wally, cout), 1 mid range mid (Hernandez) and 1 budget (ravmorrison)

My other issues are Hernandez injured. Lambert not getting my points at all.

Do I go cout to hba? Seems sensible but changes my strategy in midfield to 1 premium, 2 mid range and 1 budget. Concerned it makes my mids look too weak. Hba would enable me to upgrade lambert to giroud.

Or could go cout to erikson/Michu and stick with lambert.

Or could go cout to erikson and Ivan to a £5.5 defender and then lambert to giroud.

Basically how my FPL has gone so far, whatever I choose I'll fail. I'm top of my works league by th skin of my teeth and should be walking it.

I think you have a few choices for decent value: Eriksen, Michu, Moses, Lamela. A Spud mid with great fix looks handy play at present. Very tempted by Eriksen's stats from that comparison with Ozil earlier on.

Don't worry about price. If someone cheaper is racking them up, lap it up. HBA worth a spot over any 9+ million player currently. I'd love to recommend Eriksen, but would rather keep him to myself.

HBA/Eriksen probably the best options in midfield with Michu close behind.

My thoughts to be fair. Think erikson looks very suited and tidy EPL (early days I know).

In an ideal world I'd be going cout to erikson for my FT this week.

      Options:
      1. Cout to Erikson/Michu (FT)
      2. Cout, lambert to HBA, giroud (-4)
      3. Cout, Ivan, lambert to Michu, distin, giroud (-8)
4 cout, Ivan, lambert to erikson, giroud, any def £6.1 or less (liking mert if fit) (-8)

Or cout to erikson and lambert to lukaku (for a punt) (-4)

Toure - possibly but great home fix this week.
Silva, Coutinho, Mirallas and Kim - yep, I'd be tempted to boot all of them.
Lambert - heavier options out there.

The back 7 is fine. Mids a problem because they are not firing. I'd be tempted to w/c but would consider a 4 pt hit something along the lines of Coutinho/Lambert for Benteks/Michu or Eriksen.

How and why does Mr. Suarez play?

    - For self
    - To win at any cost (see World Cup for example; also, see picture next to definition of "diving")
    - To either make Champion's League with Liverpool
    - Or, more likely to earn a fat pay day for him and Liverpool when he gets sold to a Champion's League club next summer

Reasons why he won't play well upon return?

    - Sulking about treatment -> undermines his own sale to another club
    - Pouting about suspension -> undermines everything else he's about
    - What else?

even if Moses has scored he never looked like he could be explosive ( he is great fpl option in his price bracket and will benefit when suarez cames back but still...)

Couthino-all i said about him in pre-season was spot on and even i didnt expect that he will do as bad as he did

so glad i went sturridge over him right from the start

can't wait to buy Michu in my team-he is brilliant and his fixures are even better

Ya think i'll use the Sunderland game to judge that.

Lovely strikeforce. Might have the same but with RVP instead of Rooney.

Don't know how to sell Tekkers. Been a beast.

Don't tell anyone but I'm secretly quite happy with my team:

    Chesney
    Zaba, Vidic, Toure
    Walcott, Michu, Eriksen, Mirallas
    Sturridge, Soldado, Lambert

Hoping for a 0-0 in the Manchester derby, obviously.

I'll save my FT and risk Toure for one more week.

    Any other thoughts?

Asked this yesterday, and results were inconclusive! Front 8 of...

    Michu - Silva - Hazard - Brady - Kim

Soldado - Giroud - Van Wolf

    3.3 in bank

    A. Silva > Eriksen, then Van Wolf > Rooney in GW6

    B. Van Wolf > Sturridge

Was all set for doing B this week, but Villa at home for Van Wolf, and Rooney becoming an option has put me off.

Not criticism of you but I love our collective ability to explain both constant scoring and lack of scoring as a reason to but/sell/captain players.

I'm still hanging onto Coutinho because "he's due" but glad I have Giroud because he's actually scoring.
