The Scout Mission – Gameweek 7

A new regular, the Scout Mission offers a preview the forthcoming Gameweek by targeting the players, the teams and the selection issues that matter. This is what we’re watching out for, so you don’t have to.

Suarez vs Sturridge
The jury is out and will be watching keenly as Liverpool prepare for an Anfield meeting with Crystal Palace that will have Fantasy managers expecting heavy returns. While Brendan Rodgers’ side lack the creativity of Philippe Coutinho, his strike pairing are purring and potential Fantasy suitors will be watching on to assess just how the pair operate. The split of points between the two will go a long way to deciding transfer trends over the international break. We’ll also be watching out for the formation – Jose Enrique’s stock could be boosted further if Rodgers persists with three at the back.

The Newcastle Teamsheet
Alan Pardew’s half-time changes and post-match comments would indicate that we’ll see a changed starting XI for the visit to Cardiff. We’ll be looking to his teamsheet with interest, with Hatem Ben Arfa’s role, in particular, hotly anticipated. Hooked at half-time on Monday night, it could be that the Frenchman’s flair is sacrificed as Pardew looks to find the “balance” in his team. In contrast, Yohan Cabaye and Mike Williamson look certain starters.

The United Backlash
Just how will United react to back-to-back league defeats? How much will the journey to Shakhtar drain from their legs? Will David Moyes start with Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney in tandem at Sunderland? Moyes seems certain Rooney will recover from the shin complaint that forced him out in midweek.

The United situation is posing us Fantasy managers questions on a weekly basis. Despite erratic form and the concern that United are way short of their potential, we have to stay alert to the fact that the fixture list remains in their favour. A pair of Old Trafford encounters with Southampton and Stoke follow the trip to the Stadium of Light and we need to monitor their performance and form carefully with that in mind. Moyes’s choice of back four also needs monitoring – with Rafael and Phil Jones now available, we’ll be watching to see how the pecking order shapes up.

Amilfitano and Sessegnon
The pair were simply outstanding in the Old Trafford victory and could well emerge as realistic midfield candidates for the weeks ahead. The home meeting with Arsenal is perhaps the toughest of tests right now but, having risen to the occasion against United, we will be watching this pair with interest. Midfield looks to be the place to target differentials and the Baggies duo are shaping up nicely.

Wenger’s Midfield
The Gunners boss opted to rest Jack Wilshere for the Champions League victory over Napoli and, with Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky are back as options, it will be interesting to see how he shuffles the pack for the trip to the Hawthorns, though with Santi Cazorla still sidelined, Wilshere looks likely to return to the Gunners’ left.

Paulinho vs Eriksen
Christian Eriksen is the fashionable pick: a poised playmaker who exudes class and creativity. However, Paulinho’s ability to arrive in the box is not going unnoticed, nor is his propensity to fire in efforts on goal. It could be that, for all Eriksen’s craft and dead-ball involvement, Paulinho could emerge as the stronger candidate for our Tottenham coverage given the 1.2 FPL price difference. Saturday’s events at the Lane in the local derby with West Ham will tell us more.

The Hammers Rearguard
Sam Allardyce surprised a few by dropping James Collins to the bench for the trip to Hull, calling on James Tomkins to lineup alongside Winston Reid. Following a rather unfortunate defeat at the KC Stadium, it remains to be seen if Big Sam offers Collins a recall or sticks with Tomkins to disappoint the Welshman’s Fantasy owners. Remain on the bench and Razvan Rat could well be the most viable route into the West Ham defence once the fixtures improve.

Lukaku’s Fixture-Proof Status
While the Belgian tore a haphazard Newcastle apart in a 45-minute spell on Monday night, he’ll face a far more grueling test of his mettle at the Etihad. A duel with compatriot Vincent Kompany looks on the cards, with Fantasy managers lining up a move for the Chelsea loanee ahead of Everton’s Gameweek 8 home encounter with Hull. A 0.3 FPL price rise over the international break looks inevitable and that would only be assured by any kind of returns from Saturday’s clash.

Juan Mata’s Pitchtime
Impressive again in Bucharest on Tuesday, Fantasy managers will be looking out for his name on Jose’s teamsheet for the trip to Norwich, pondering whether the Spaniard could yet be a factor. Having dropped to 9.6 from an FPL starting price of 10.5, Mata could represent value if we can be convinced of form and security of start. It will also be interesting to see how Jose deals with Hazard’s possible return – Andre Schurrle thrived in his role on Tuesday. Meanwhile, John Terry has started every league game so far but was in action in Bucharest: we’ll be watching to see how Mourinho juggles Terry, Gary Cahill and David Luiz for the Carrow Road visit.

Swansea’s Potential
A trip to Southampton will be a stern test but, after an opening set of fixtures that made Michael Laudrup’s outfit more ugly ducklings than swans, they follow the weekend with a schedule that suggests strong returns at both ends of the pitch. We’ll be looking to see if both Ashley Williams and Pablo Hernandez can prove their fitness, whilst assessing whether Michu deserves to keep his top ranking status in our midfield watchlist.

Paul Lambert’s Tactics
The Villa boss continues to tinker with his formation as a result of injuries. Lambert has now moved from 4-3-3- to 4-4-2 to 3-5-2 in the last three matches, with the latter tactic utilised in last week’s win over City. Should he retain the same shape, Antonio Luna could arrive on Fantasy radars as on out of position prospect on the left of midfield.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Ben Arfa only got a stay of execution as Brady's injury forced my hand,
too much risk of a 1pt cameo for me
rather take my chances on an inform Coleman vs an off form city defence

Next week i'll have two free transfers. How does this sound?

Walker & Ramsey -> Wilson & Michu. It gives me this squad.

    Migs
    Coleman Wilson Vidic Turner Chester
    Ozil Eriksen Michu Brady Whittingham
    Rooney Suarez Giroud

I know losing Walker might not be a good idea but what a front 8 it gives me. Wilson has decent fixtures too. I won't feel quite as stupid as it isn't a hit.

Anyone think there's a real chance that Hart could be dropped soon?

He's actually costing them points.. Not sure how many more mistakes he can make!

Also think he's making so many because he's so cocky and actually does this he's undroppable for both Club and Country.

    Mignolet • Lewis
    Terry • Walker • Coleman • Clyne • Wilson
    Ozil • Michu • Eriksen • Barkley • Whittingham
    Suarez • Rooney • Lukaku

    Falling stars

How quickly the game weeks roll around. With champions league football behind us for another week and the Europa league yet to come it’s time once again to consider the crocs and fallers on offer this week. Once again the rules…Random fallers is a fictitional squad made up of players all of whom have a current value less than their opening GW values and are collectively on or less than the original 100 mill budget and the antidote to the knee jerk…
    Falling stars

Firstly an update of last weeks crop of ne’er do wells and fallers as posted on Tuesday.

    Cech (3pts)
    Kompany (1pt) Koscielny (2pts) Clyne (6pts)
Hazard (2pts) Fell (1pt) Lamela (DNS) Moses (2pts)
    Suarez (C26pts) Remy (8pts) Lukaku (16pts)

Bench.... Wishire (2pts) Rosenior (6pts) Williams (DNS)

BOOM....69 points with Wilshire off the bench.... Not a bad week again for the fallers !!

    International break.

Deep joy for those FPL players of a more patient nature. No doubt GW7 will once again throw up a batch of must have heroes who will provide great excitement on the green side of Totalfpl…however…With the season now well underway happenstance and injury has seen fit to provide the red corner with a wealth of talent equal to, and often exceeding, any short term spikes in form on offer for the more excitable. With that in mind this weeks squad is designed to take a longer term look at those players who may be on offer after the international break, when all threat of injuries has passed. With a full two weeks of transfer activities many of this weeks squad will further reduce in price and offer even greater value for those prepared to sit on their hands…even as the more excitable firmly have their head in theirs, as those prized early acquisitions gather red a and yellow flags aplenty on the basis of saving on those precious 0.1 rises.

This weeks squad (arrows indicate current direction of NTI sales)..prices correct as of 03/10

    Cech (6.4^) xxxx(4.0)

    Koscielny (5.4v) Clyne (4.4^) Rosenior (3.9^) Evra (6.4v) Johnson (5.8vb1)

    Moses (6.3^) Cabaye (6.2^) Mata (9.6^) Sessegnon (6.7v) Walcott (9.3vb2)

    Eto’o (8.9v) Lukaku (7.7^C) Benteke (8.9vb3)

99.9 (0.1) and a saving of an enormous 3.1 mill on opening GW prices

Goalkeepr…With nor/CAR to come Cech is amongst the stand out keepers for the next two weeks. With three CS already this season Cech represents one of the safest options into the Chelsea back line as his ownership continues to head south as owners drift towards the cheaper Mignolet an Boruc..however…Cech has been called upon to make a save only fifteen times this season with Mignolet close to double at 29 and Boruc a whopping 46 saves…figures which highlight dramatically the more resilient Chelsea defence over.

Defenders…Opted for Koscielny again this week as all Arsenal’s back four continue to leak owners..and for no other reason than he is set to dip by a further 0.1 to 5.3, Having conceded only a single goal in four games since the opening GW plus a CS the lack of FPL points hide a quite resolute defence. Clyne happily sits on page two of the transfers (total points) page where he remains our hidden gem as the casuals fail to look further than page one. Evra…Very little needed from me, one of the most attacking full backs on offer with fixtures to boot, the masses seem a little perplexed by last weeks no show and his price has taken a knock…although Moyes will surely be little less cavalier from here on in. Rosenior..One of three playing 3.9 defenders on offer now with team may Faye and Baker for Villa, back to back impressive displays should see Rosenior retain his place for a few weeks to come yet.

Midfield…Moses..Playing in the hole behind Suarez and Sturridge in a 3-5-2 formation and at home to Palace is all we need to know. Mata…Back in favour at Chelsea and looking good. Always a rotation risk but the three amigos are slowly proving their worth as the players of choice despite the summer signings by Mourinho, his isolation has seen a whopping 0.9 shaved off his initial price, Welcome back Juan. Sessegnon…An outstanding display by the Baggies last time out saw the plaudits given elsewhere…but Sess was without doubt the driving force in the role in the hole, a great buy on last weeks showing..Cabaye…A dreadfull first half display by a previously marauding Newcastle United last Monday was improved by the reintroduction of Cabaye at half time.,,With a goal and an assist in the last two Cabaye may prove a shrewd mid priced buy for the next few GW’s (car/LIV/sun)

Forwards…Eto’o…A one match ban for Torres followed by injury should offer plenty of minutes for Eto’o to prove his worth, with decent fixtures for the next two (nor/CAR) and a leaky Man City defence waiting beyond that. With the Schurle pick a recent memory it may be a warning that Mourinho is not the most predictable of managers and that both Ba and Schurle could throw a spanner in the works…Lukaku…Simply sensational against Newcastle and provided for my money the best forward display of the entire season of any player from any team at anytime.Rising fast it will be the last chance to purchase Lukaku for below his original opening price as he starts his relentless climb up the pecking order…sheer quality and excitement..just buy him.

And so to the bench…Johnson/ Walcott/Benteke…My three crocs of choice are my heavy hitting injured benchers for this week…all of whom are proven FPL players..all of who have fallen..and all of who will continue to fall throughout the international break.. Great picks within their own right, regardless of what happens this GW, all represent cost effective late transfer/s without risk and with substantial returns, and all of who allow us time to relax and contemplate the fallers for the duration of the break.

With plenty more players skulking in the Red corners of TotalFPL gathering cobwebs and nursing their injured or tired limbs, this break represents the best chance so far this season to increase the quality of our teams whilst reducing the cost of individual players in order to accommodate more big hitters within our squads…and there are plenty of choices…Cazorla, Kompany, Williams, Lamela, Gerrard, Hazard, Williams…and on and on….Indeed this break is a rare luxury, by far the best option is to sit on our hands and watch the fallers drop in price as the casuals knee jerk last weeks heroes in and take the risks…leaving us with the best picks at the cheapest prices (Lukaku apart)…

Right, and on that note…Hope you liked my selections for this week and as always keep watching the fallers and massaging those knees....oh and reading the tweets…you know it makes sense.

Di santo started 24 games for Wigan in the PL last season, most of those games Kone played on the wing a bit more. Only in the end it was McManaman and Kone in the middle. Also Kone was Martinezes new purchase and he clearly as not happy with Di Santo. At Everton he did not just bring in Kone to sit on the bench as well.

I'd be amazed if Lukaku is benched for jelavic. Especially in light of their scoring records. Not to mention the fact Everton paid £5m plus his wages for one season. That's Everton, who spend an average of £5m a season on players. Sounds a bit odd getting Chelsea's best fwd for their usual transfer budget and then not playing him in favour of a player who had a purple patch 18 months ago! Anyway what do I know!

This is what I predicted on here. Holtby-Defoe-Chadli for europa league, Siggurdson for premier league. It's working for both, so why change?

Apologies this is in the wrong spot, but I can't figure out where to post!

    Mignolet
    Vertonghen Baines |Clyne
    Ozil Ramsey Michu Barkley
    Rooney Lukaku Giroud

This is my team and these are my subs: Boruc, Faye (Hull), Wilson, Ravel.

Would you start Faye ahead of Clyne? Also, best choice for captain? Rooney is the obvious choice, how about Vertonghen as a differential?

    Thanks.
