The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Saturday

Saturday left Fantasy managers considering their expensive front lines once again, as Newcastle’s mid-price Frenchman maintained his stunning form. The headlines were to be snatched from him, however, as a United youngster delivered a performance that possibly announced the arrival of the next major Fantasy bandwagon.

The Game Changer

Alan Pardew’s post-Goodison tinkering shifted Loic Remy back to the left of a front three, with Papiss Cisse recalled in the central role but the move did little to quell the Frenchman’s goal threat. A first half brace at Cardiff from Remy sealed a precious three points and took his tally since his arrival in the North East to five in four starts.

Mentioned in Monday night’s Knee Jerk, at the time, considering Remy as a serious candidate for a slot in our three-man frontline seemed optimistic having witnessed the performance of Romelu Lukaku. While the Belgian also put continued pressure on those three places with a fourth goal of his Everton tenancy at City, Remy won further admiring glances as Fantasy managers contemplated whether the pair, both currently priced under 8.0 in the Fantasy Premier League game, could possibly keep pace with more expensive options.

Goals from Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez again confirmed their current “near essential” status but, should Olivier Giroud stutter at West Brom on Sunday, Fantasy managers may look to the Gunners striker, along with Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie, and consider both Remy and Lukaku as cheaper replacements to free up cash. With Fantasy managers perhaps attempting to find differentials and break up template teams, Remy, who was removed with 20 minutes to go as a precautionary measure, could prove to be a key target who could liberate funds for a refresh at the back and in midfield.

The Underused

Fantasy managers may just have been handed another gift. Adnan Januzaj was one of the pre-season starlets who left us wondering if he could possibly break through into the first team ranks. However, when it came to gambling on a cheap United asset, it was new signing Wilfred Zaha which drew the most pre-season interest. Now, six Gameweeks in, while Zaha stil has more owners than Antonio Valencia and Shinji Kagawa, it’s Januzaj who has suddenly emerged as a the “prospect”.

Encouraging displays off the bench earned the 18-year-old Belgian a first start at the Stadium of Light and he took his chance spectacularly. His poise, balance and fearless display, was capped with two stunning goals. It left Fantasy managers scrambling to the player list, excitedly realising that, in Januzaj, a gem had been unearthed.

Priced at just 4.6 in the FPL, could it be that we’re about to witness another huge budget midfield bandwagon to rival those or Aaron Ramsey and Ross Barkley?

While his security of start in the long-term will be in question, certainly we’d have to expect Januzaj to retain the shirt for Gameweek 8’s home clash with Southampton. With Stoke to follow at Old Trafford a week later, there is clear potential for the young Belgian to go on delivering. With Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney blanking and Fantasy managers looking to gain coverage of United’s potential over their forthcoming home matches, Januzaj arrival on the scene could not be better timed.

The Selection Poser

Ben Arfa’s omission from Pardew’s teamsheet at Cardiff was perhaps not a surprise. The Newcastle boss used terms such as “balance” and “consistency” following Monday night’s first half horror show at Goodison. There’s little question that Newcastle were a better side in the second half on Monday without Ben Arfa – a player who has always struggled to find any degree of consistency throughout his chequered career.

Today, Newcastle’s performance was, for long spells, supremely convincing. Cabaye flourished in the engine room and Remy, in Ben Arfa’s position on the left, won the game for the Magpies.

While his talent will surely surface again, it’s perhaps unlikely that we’ll see Ben Arfa in the starting lineup for the visit of Liverpool in Gameweek 8. Pardew will be boosted by the three points and with Jonas Guiterrez also returning as a hardworking option out wide, Ben Arfa looks set to face a wait to prove a point.

His Fantasy owners are unlikely to hold and wait for Pardew to work him back into his lineup. Ben Arfa’s price had risen to 7.5 from 7.0 in the FPL by Gameweek 6 but, having dipped to 7.4 this week, the winger is already the most sold midfielder just hours after Saturday’s final whistle. With the two-week break now looming, a significant price drop looks likely as Fantasy managers trade in to pick up the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Ross Barkley and even Adnan Januzaj.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      De-buchy-fense. Awesome.
I'm actually okay with hits, especially early in the season, if it helps build value.
And If Moses can't score from 3 yards out with an open net, maybe Januzaj is worth a look. Sorry, I'm just bitter that the Moses miss may have cost me 12 points (Suarez(c), assist + 3 BAPs). Stick to your plan.

        - Moses has been in position to score and assist, therefore the potential for points is there.
        - GB pointed out that Moses isn't as good playing in the hole; may improve once Coutinho is back.
        - Bizarrely, Moses is my 5th mid now, behind Ramsey & Barkley - do I really need to add Januzaj to this budget midfielder party? Methinks not. And if I have to get him at 4.9, or 5.2, then I'm still going to have more free cash than I know what to do with.
        - I'm okay with some early season hits, but I've taken many to get respectable, as I started terribly and refused to WC. Time to move up a notch.

        and then dropping or keeping?

ostensibly, he'll be better with coutinho

but I don't know, he's rather expensive bench fodder at the moment

but, being that he was 56% of the way to a rise before today started, he's really not a priority to get rid of when my defense is in dire need of a transfer

i thought he was brought in to play on the wing so Coutinho could play "in the hole"

before he was brought in Brendan Rodgers said he needed another good winger so Coutinho could play in the hole

But with the system we're playing now there are no wingers. Could very well be

              –––––––––––– Migs
              –– Toure – Skrtel/Sakho – Agger
              GJ –– Gerrard –– Lucas –– Enrique
              ––––––––– Coutinho
              ––––– Sturridge –– Suarez

can't argue with that if all those defenders can stay healthy

the way they've been defending, they may need 5 on the pitch - Mignolet should not be making so many saves

I think a lot of it is teething issues with the new system. I doubt any of them have had much, if any, experience playing as a back 3, so it will take them a bit of time to adapt to the new style. Although Skrtel doesn't particularly look like a player who is capable of adapting much at all, which is why I think he'll be the first to be cast aside. Toure and Agger look like much more intelligent defenders, not just brute force, boot the ball long defenders. And Sakho is young.

            BR before Moses was signed:
"[Philippe Coutinho's] ideal position is in the No10 role. I've seen him play when Inter had two advanced players and one holding, and he was one of the advanced players. Whether it's a two or a one, he can play in that role, or from the side. But centrally, that's where I see him playing. That's why I'm looking to sign someone for the left wing."

    Migs/Boruc
    Zaba Coleman Dawson chester Burner
    Ozil Ramsay Barkley Brady Yaya
    Sturridge Rooney Suarez

    ISSUES....Brady(but flagged and maybe a keeper)....chester(not a big worry)....Burner...meh...Rooney???

    WANTS...Lukaku...Januzaj???.....Michu.

Want to do Michu and Lukaku in for Rooney and someone, but don't know how to do it without losing Yaya. Madness right?

Team looks great for next week with most playing home, and hopefully a bad day for Newc and a big day for my triple LFC.

    Would you

    Bonus Points Scandal?

After enjoyably watching the match between Liverpool and Crystal Palace I could not believe it when I found out that Sturridge had received 3 bonus points while Suarez received none. I thought Suarez was more dominant during the match and there must be some kind of a mistake.
So I've set out to check the actual stats and count both players' BPS tally according to the published scoring matrix on the FPL site.

Both players receive 10 BPS for playing the game, playing more than 60 minutes and for scoring (1+1+8).
Suarez gets 1 point deducted for being caught offside 5 times and another for conceding 2 fouls. However, he has created 3 chances in the match, with one of them I believe should be considered as a 'big' chance (85th minute) that Sturridge had missed (hit the post). so that is -1 BPS for Sturridge for the big miss and +1 for Suarez for the big chance created, but lets be conservative and only give Suarez +1 for 3 key passes.
Suarez gets another 1 BPS for a total of 39 passes with 76.9% of them successful, while Sturridge only made 29 passes so he receives no BPS for this criteria.

    To sum it all up,
    Suarez-
    played the game: 1
played more than 60 mins: 1
    scored a goal: 8
    39 passes 76.9% successful: 1
    3 key passes: 1
    Caught offside 5 times: -1
    2 fouls conceded: -1
    TOTAL: 10

    Sturridge:
    played the game: 1
played more than 60 mins: 1
    scored a goal: 8
    TOTAL: 10

If we consider that chance in the 85th minute as a big one then Sturridge should get one point deducted for missing it, leaving him with 9 total.

As did many others, I picked Suarez as my captain for GW7 and it was extremely disappointing to see he didn't get any bonus points (even worse Sturridge got 3). It is more disappointing to find out this was done unjustifiably according to the stats from the game.
I obviously checked the stats only for this match and can't tell how many other 'mistakes' have already been made.

I have sent a message to the FPL fellas with this information, but they write on the site they will not enter into a discussion about any individual match. All I can hope for is that in the future they will look more closely on correctly allocating the bonus points as it makes for a big part of the gameweek score.

If someone else wants to have a look at the stats from this match and show where I'm wrong and they are right, I'll be happy to see that as it will restore so of my faith in the game.

moving on to Super Sunday now,
    goodluck to you all!

Just to add, I also capped Suarez, so was monitoring the BPS throughout the game. About 2 minutes before the end of the game, I saw Suarez was on 11, so was quite happy that he was gonna get the 3 bonus points... But when I checked after the game I saw that his BPS had dropped to 7! I have no idea how he lost those 4 points in the dying minutes of the game...

I made a comment about this too , most people on here seem to agree that I don've understand the new scoring system. What utter nonsense. In addition to the Sturridge miss I couldn't believe Moses didn't bury that goal.

As for Sakho, a decent game he had but he almost scored an own goal. Gerrard as usual Mr. Dependable but seriously 3 bonus.

While all the pundits might argue about stats am sure cause I watched that game it was Suarez who outshone Sturridge and lets just say for arguments sake that you want to reward Sturridge with the 3 bonus , Suarez was definitely worth something !

I'm triple now on Ozil Ramsey Giroud.

If Ramsey continues, I can see Giroud to Bentenke and adding Walcott to mid. If not, I can see shipping Ramsey for Walcott.

I don't see much problem with tripling until mid-December. After that, with possible games cancelled due to weather and then teams missing game weeks, it becomes an issue.

    draft league trade

    I trade away
    Soldado
    Ramsey
    Coutinho

    I get
    Ozil
    Bent
    Moses

Can only start 7. Leave my team after trade as
    Howard
    Evra GJohnson
    Ozil Cazorla (Mirallas) (Moses)
    Suarez Remy (Bent)

    yay or nay?

No need to take hits imo.

I would just do Coutinho -> Michu (if you can afford that)

          Ah I see.

In that case I would probably say no to those trades.

I fear Moses may lose his place/become a bit part player once Cout is back. Not convinced Bent is worth taking up one of your striker spots either. I sold Soldado last week and already think it was a bad idea!

Yeah, I could do with some Spurs cover I guess!

Was thinking Nolan -> Barkley(HUL) this week as this would leave just enough for Mirallas -> Walcott (if he drops another 0.1m by then) the week after... Thoughts?

      Mirallas/Nolan -> Barkley

      look at Everton's fixture list

gives you more money to go up for a premium mid when you transfer out the other one from the Mirallas/Nolan pair

Yeah, that's the current plan (see above). Would need to catch Barkley before any more rises though, and would need Wally to fall another 0.1m before the GW9 deadline. Chances?

Alternative option is Sturridge -> Lukaku and then Nolan/Mirallas -> Wally... Better?

Another dreaded red arrow, this is getting ridiculous.

    Migs, 4.0
    Wilson, Vidic, Walker, Coleman, Turner
    Ozil, Michu, Barkley, Whittingham, Arnautovic
    Giroud, Suarez, Rooney

    1 FT, 0.1 ITB

Considering Rooney to Lukaku? Although I will want Benteke when he's back so I could wait until then. Other problems are Arnie, Vidic, and Wilson, but I have no idea what to do with any of them.
