The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Saturday

Saturday’s events were dominated by Manchester City’s seven-goal haul as they destroyed a hapless Norwich City at the Etihad. With the points still being calculated and the performances still fresh in our mind, Manuel Pellegrini’s side dominate our early Gameweek thinking…

The Game Changer

Red hot form, top of the Captain Poll, the most transferred in player ahead of the Gameweek. The scene was set for Sergio Aguero to deliver and he didn’t disappoint. Those who took a hit to bring in the Argentine must be delighted – his 15-point return, with maximum bonus surely to follow, offered a handsome pay-off.

As we’ve written on these pages in recent weeks – Aguero has built a case to be considered “essential” even before today’s performance against Norwich. Looking at his numbers now, the lure to invest in Aguero is almost overwhelming.

He’s now scored in his last five league starts – collecting seven goals and five assists in that devastating spell. That’s seen Aguero hit the top of the overall FPL rankings and, even in a season where a case of heavy-hitting strikers have performed, he’s become difficult to ignore.

The threat of rotation and Aguero’s propensity to suffer injury provide the caveats. While City’s Champions League campaign and Manuel Pellegrini’s options in Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic cause some concern, it should be noted that Aguero has only failed to start one match when fully fit – the trip to Stoke City in Gameweek 4. Having dropped points at the Britannia, we have to wonder if Pellegrini has had a rethink when it comes to his prolific marksman. There’s little doubt that he has now become central to their title ambitions.

Certainly the argument that Aguero is a rotation risk is becoming increasingly muted as it continues to be drowned out by a torrent of goals and assists.

The Underused

With our forward lines packed with quality, there is an understandable reluctance to jump on Aguero’s form. While today’s returns made that stance harder to justify, the David Silva option in midfield does at least present another route to attempt to cover City’s unquenchable thirst for goals.

Silva’s ownership still sits at just 6% tonight and yet his 8-point return, with perhaps bonus points to follow, will mean that the Spaniard has shown strong consistency. He’s now returned goals or assists in five of his seven league appearances, while bonus points tonight would see him challenge at the top of the current midfield form rankings.

Yaya Toure’s huge ownership is perhaps the reason behind the reluctance to adopt Silva as a midfield option. Another set-piece goal for the Ivorian today will likely see his owners keep the faith, however, there is a strong argument to say that Silva, a cheaper alternative to Toure, will eventually surpass his team-mate’s points tally. Toure has relied on goals from three stunning free-kicks this season, whilst Silva is everywhere, providing incisive passes in the attacking third and a good level of efforts on goal from open play.

While the floodgates remain wide open for Pellegrini’s attack-minded outfit, Silva’s consistent supply of points looks assured.

The Selection Poser

Sticking with Pellegrini’s side, his decision to drop Joe Hart to the bench and retain Costel Pantilimon in goal has given Fantasy managers food for thought. Hart has never been a major temptation given his price point but Pantilimon is a different matter. At just 4.9, the Romanian would provide the cheapest route into the City back four from here on in.

Today’s clean sheet was the first since Gameweek 4 but, with the fixture list improving and with City well capable of dominating matches and starving opponents of possession, they may now be a case to consider their rearguard with a sub 5.0 FPL asset on offer. The issue, of course, is just how long Pellegrini will keep faith with Pantilimon given that, in World Cup year, he will be under pressure to recall Hart to the City goal.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Guys say hello to the eventual winner of FPL...

    http://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/310183/event-history/10/

Who else can compete with 112m in the bank?

And who else would have the foresight to BENCH Suarez 😯

If I had a spare team I'd definitely try that! Not only is he doing much better than me (despite spending 64 points on TF), like you say, he can basically boss it for the rest of the season. If he won, it would practically re-define this game!

    Gaz, you still around?

I think Ozil's GI stats weren't up there, due to the fact that some of his assists may not have been counted as an assist outside of FPL.

e.g Ozil's 1st free kick against Stoke. Begovic Saves. Ramsey scores from the rebound. Outside of FPL , the assist wasn't attributed to Ozil's name. It wasn't given.

So, that assist was omitted from the stats.

All the stats below, are updated with this GW's goals/assists except for the last one.
Added a 3rd section with stats only from GW 1 - 9 + disregarding/including 1 Stoke City assist, so you can compare it with other stats from the table I posted in the original post.

Ozil: If you include the Stoke City assist.

    Goals - 2
    Assists - 5
    PpG - 6.86 PpG
    Goal Involvement - 86.4 Minutes

If you don't include the Stoke City assist :

    Goals - 2
    Assists - 4
    GI - 100.8 Minutes

and , this is his stats if you don't include the assist + disregarding this GWs goals/assists.

    Goals - 2
    Assists - 3
    GI - 103 Minutes

Including Stoke Assist + disregarding this GWs goals/assists

    Goals - 2
    Assists - 4
    GI - 86

So in FPL terms, he would be placed at 7th on the table , tying with Giroud. This is if you include the Stoke Assists + disregard this GW's goals/assists to allow a fair comparison.

Just realised that some of the others on the table might have had "FPL assists/goals" not included. Which might move them higher up the list. 😛

Indeed. SoT is the next most important stat. I find key passes aren't necessarily an accurate indicator of assist potential either so don't take too much notice of it. Its all about goal threat really.

I disagree with you KP statement.

If you take a look closely at all the KP/Chances Created by a certain player, you should be able to weed out all the "Key passes" that aren't really genuine chances being created. Which will leave you with an accurate representation of one's assist potential.

Yeah tbf I haven't seen anyone do a proper analysis on the KP to assist ratio before but I know it has been criticised. Whereas SiB and SoT to correlate well to actual goals.

      - if i think they'll get my team points
      - prefer a player that gets goals & assists (i.e. have an issue with benteke not also being an assister)
      - how their value fits with the rest of my team... went with 3 mid-price strikers through january last season and was in the top 100k (maybe top 50k, don't remember, only matters where you finish and)... I failed to adjust strategy/strikers well after january... got on to being a stubborn idiot

    Silva,Ravel,Ramsey

    Rooney,Suarez,Aguero

Back down to 1.6m, can't catch a break. Was too stingy to go with a -4 for Aguero though my gut was shouting for it.

Thinking of saving the FT for GW11, can this team beat the average?

    Mig
    Coleman Ivanovic Clyne
    Ozil Hazard Ramsey Michu
    Suarez(c) Benteke Lukaku

xx, JWP, Burner, Chester + 0.7m

2 FTs into the international break would be brilliant I feel. Thoughts? Thanks

      yes

2 FTs for int'l break sounds good

spend the money to become a member and read the articles about the new BPS system from the last international break to help inform your transfers

          3 BPS articles:

Comparison tool in members area is great for getting a lot of data when considering two players (I always check the two "average" boxes now that I know they are there)

Season ticker in members area can be sorted for ease/difficulty and also sorted for attacking, overall or clean sheet ease/difficulty

          Those are some basic perks

Would also recommend a few member generated tables

              No worries.

There's a lot of information in the Members Area and articles, and it can be overwhelming. Keep in mind the BPS articles will have dated player data, but the principals espoused remain the same.

As this year's bonus system is very different from season's past, I think understanding how it works well should help you rise through the ranks a bit (i.e. simply by picking defenders favored by the bonus system, you'll edge up a few points each week, and those add up; same with midfielders)

    What do you guys think:
    A) Get Suarez and Aguero for a -4
    B) Keep Sturridge and just get Suarez
So basically Aguero and Suarez (-4) or Sturridge Suarez

Who to bring in for the absolute waste of space that is Lampard? (Lost 0.5 already on him 😕 )

    A) Janz (will free up cash for Lukaku > Rooney in coming weeks)
    B) Oscar (leaves 0.1 ITB)
    C) Hazard (have the exact money)
    D) Brady (will leave me cash to do Rio > 6+m DF)

Maybe do a -4 this week an make sure you free up cash and get Suarez this week with enough moneys left to snap up Kun next week for free

So is that it now...... Haz & Oscar are no longer worth the dough after a few blanks?

Had carefully planned to get rid of RVP & Studge for Kun & Suaz with money left over for Lamps > Haz/Oscar for their incredible run of fixtures.

Both are now in minus NTI, and I'm left wondering if its just the season to ignore premium MFers. Much better value in Brady / Janz / Sess etc.....

Is Coutinho even a better pick than Rav Mo/Januzaj?

Like for a Lukaku to Rooney upgrade?

This is just future planning so will see how Coutihno fares with Fulham at home next weekend.

Would have been on 86 (90-4) with Michu and Chico to play, but couldn't pull the trigger all week and saved FT. At 59 with Michu, Chico, and Coleman to play.

Freak first-min 80-yard goals aside, my Boruc / Davis GK combo has served me well so far this season. Some horrific fixtures from GW12 though. Spending money, let alone FTs on goalkeepers doesn't have huge appeal. Should I stick with them until the Jan TF window (at least) and hope for the best or start thinking of an exit strategy?

If you find yourself with 2FTs, you could think about addressing it with one. If you don't, let it ride.

GKs are seldom getting bonus points, and clean sheets are rarer now than earlier in the season.

Same thing here - not worth a hit and my transfers are also too valuable. Many others will be in the same predicament so Im not too worried.

Prepare exit strategy but only use if rest of team does not require FT.

I'd stick for sure, not even anyone I'd particularly want to replace him with to be honest. Migs/DDG/Hart/Cech are all way overpriced for the returns they are showing. Jussi might be worth considering, but I wouldn't waste a tranny on it.

Might be good to note that a tough fixture doesn't necessarily mean no CS.
Take the Chelsea Newcastle game for instance

Thanks for the replies guys - Think I'll stick. As TG82 points out; the wider question is who would I replace them with anyway? Nobody worth 2 TF on current showing. And maybe I'll get a penalty save somewhere... 🙂

Could go with Vorm till January WC or get Pantilimon if he becomes a regular starter.

    On a serious note...

Why hasn't Brady's flag been removed yet?

He came on for 15mins today...

Valeri's flag was kept yellow for 4 gameweeks running despite him playing - maybe it's something similar? not completely healed?
