The Watchlist Updated – The Midfield

Having analysed the Defence in yesterday’s first instalment, we move onto the men in the centre of the park as we roll out our recommended player picks for the next four to six Gameweeks. Chelsea’s Belgian sensation continues to lead the way after last night’s stunning performance against the Black Cats, while Arsenal’s two main protagonists retain lofty positions despite a testing run to follow:

Eden Hazard retains top spot after another devastating display in last night’s win at Sunderland. With Oscar missing out against the Black Cats due to an ankle injury, the Belgian delivered his fourth set of double figures in the last seven Gameweeks for the Blues – a trip to Stoke and home games against Palace and Swansea in the next four look set to see him plunder the points again.

Arsenal duo Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil remain in the top five refresh, with an assist and goal respectively in last night’s win over Hull. The Gunners’ schedule is far from straightforward, though – home games against Everton and Chelsea bookend a trip to the Etihad in the next three. Those with more than one of Arsene Wenger’s attacking options may look elsewhere in light of such a schedule. Theo Walcott is further down the rankings – he has still yet to start a match since returning from injury, with his manager explaining he was no more than a sub against Steve Bruce’s side after failing to train over the past week due to illness.

Steven Gerrard’s outstanding consistency earns him the nod over midfield team-mate Philippe Coutinho. An assist in last night’s win over Norwich means the Reds skipper has now earned his owners attacking returns in eight of the last nine Gameweeks – Liverpool’s next three home matches (WHM, CAR, HUL) could barely be more appetising but trips to Spurs, City and Chelsea somewhat lessen his appeal. Yohan Cabaye has also delivered on a regular basis. The 6.5-priced Newcastle midfielder has scored or assisted in six of the last 10 and has home games against Southampton and Stoke in addition to a trip to Palace in the next four – the downside is that he remains on the Suspension Tightrope and is just a single caution away from a one-match ban.

Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri have the form but three of the next four fixtures are a little tricky for City. A visit to Southampton and home games against Arsenal and Liverpool look a real test for Manuel Pellegrini’s men as they attempt to maintain the last 100% home record in the top-flight. The Ivorian is the pricier of the pair, at 9.6 to 8.2, though this is vindicated by his consistency – Toure has now scored or assisted in nine of the first 14 Gameweeks compared to Nasri’s seven. The latter remains a real differential, though, and currently sits in less than 6% of FPL teams.

Stephane Sessegnon’s stock took a real dive after he was benched for last night’s home loss to City. With rotation kicking in, though, we expect him to return to the fold as Steve Clarke’s side brace themselves for home games against Norwich and Hull, with a trip to Cardiff sandwiched in between. Chris Brunt offers a cheaper route into the Baggies midfield for such a schedule – coming in at 5.0 to Sessegnon’s 6.6, he has scored or assisted in three of the last five.

Nathan Redmond, Barry Bannan and Peter Whittingham are the stand-out budget selections on offer in this week’s refresh. Coming in at just 4.6, Redmond looks a secure pick in light of injuries to Robert Snodgrass and Anthony Pilkington on the flanks – trips to West Brom and Sunderland supplement the visits of Swansea and Fulham in the next four for Chris Hughton’s side. Bannan is even cheaper at 4.4 and has played a part in each of Palace’s last two goals – he welcomes Cardiff, Newcastle and Norwich to Selhurst Park in the next six and also travels to Villa.

Whittingham (5.1) pays visit to Palace before three home games in four (WBA, SOT, SUN) and heads the queue for set-pieces and spot-kicks for Cardiff. As mentioned in yesterday’s defenders piece, Malky Mackay’s side rotate home/away perfectly with Palace all the way up to Gameweek 27 – some Fantasy managers are eyeing up a cut-price Bannan/Whittingham partnership to take advantage of what looks a very kind run of matches.

Antonio Valencia has started the last five for United and, whilst he has managed just a goal and assist all season, has a very enticing schedule on his agenda. Home games with Newcastle and West Ham are supplemented by trips to Villa, Hull and Norwich and, at 7.1, he could appeal as a mid-price punt as David Moyes looks to recover from last night’s loss to former club Everton – a move to right-back midway through the Toffees defeat is somewhat worrying, though.

    Interesting. 3 of Shelvey's 4 most advanced positions were in the last 3 GWs. Absence of strikers at Swansea is getting him closer to the goal.

          Maybe. Shelvey isn't nailed on in the hole though. Pozuelo could easily start there.

            Pozuelo has had 66' and 83' in 3 days though, think there's a strong chance he'll be rotated especially if Michu returns.

            Think Shelvey can only play CM or hole.

          This week's formation was

          ---------------Vazquez
          Hernandez Shelvey Pozuelo
          ---------Canas De Guzman

          Would think Michu would come in at striker for Vazquez if he does make it. Probably Dyer in for Pozuelo.

              Yeah the thing that makes me consider him is the absence of Bony, Vazquez and Michu (for now). Really pushes him up the starting and position order. And the Europa problem has eased. Still a punt.

    Afternoon all, so, a remarkable gameweek but as the dust settles I'm still looking at a team with Giroud and Benteke in it 😕

        Cheers Rosco, got very lucky, certainly not going to complain about benching Marshall and Coleman's cleansheets.

        I'll only need another 0.9 (on today's prices, that's bound to change). Considering Mignolet -> Speroni. Not something I'd love but would do the job as it stands.

        I considered Negredo last week, along with Rooney, Lukaku and Benteke when I was replacing Sturridge. Didn't make the wisest choice 🙄

        Oh, and I know what you mean by [BANNED B WORD] but there'll be people thinking you've really got it in for him 😆

      He's fit enough to start. Doesn't mean he will. Check his early season minutes. No reason Mourinho won't whip out his rotation wand again. On any given week, Ramires and Mikel could start ahead of Lampard. Luxury option if you're other 7 attackers are secure.

        I've brought in Distin to partner Coleman, currently both benched this week for obvious reasons, then next week Lukaku comes in to join the party.

    So, I definitely want Lukaku and Hazard for GW16 - question is, which is the best way to do this?

    (A) Nasri & Giroud -> Hazard & Lukaku (4 points) this week.

    (B) Nasri & Clyne -> Hazard & Chester (4 points), then Giroud -> Lukaku in GW16

    (C) Nasri & Mirallas -> Hazard & Sess (4 points), then Giroud -> Lukaku in GW16

    (D) Giroud -> Lukaku this week, then Nasri -> Hazard next week.

    Panty
    Terry, Evra, Ward
    Mirallas, Walcott, Ramsey, Nasri
    Aguero, Suarez, Giroud

    Davis, MOlsson, Clyne, Ravel

        You're probably right, but a rested Giroud with a home tie vs a Lukaku who played 90 mins midweek (could he possibly get rested at the w/e?) away at ARS seems madness.

        Man this would be so much easier if they both only rise once more between now and the GW deadline. Chances that all those getting Hazard/Lukaku this week will do so today, and they therefore won't rise again on Fri night?

      Not sure why you've got your panties in a mess. Just get rid of Walcott instead of Nasri and you don't have to worry about price rises screwing up your plans.

          Yes.

          Not entirely sure what the rush was on Wally. Even if he had started against Hull, he is clearly being eased in so he would've been dropped for this GW instead. Arsenal are playing very well so have no need to rush him back.

            Yeah, on reflection it was an error. Had he not been ill all week I think he may have started instead of Bendtner though, and HUL looked like a great opp for a differential.

    Hello lads!

    I think I went a bit mental. However, I had to get Hazard in for their nice games and Lukaku has good fixtures from GW 16. I also figured that Man Utd have not a huge deal of motivation (it saddens me to say this; watched 3 last games and we're terrible, looks like only Rooney and Evra are the only players who are trying to make something happen...)

    Anyhow I went for this: Rooney, Cabaye, Clyne -> Lukaku, Hazard and Ward (-8) (this was a move with a few future fixtures in mind).

    My team now:

    Mignolet Lewis

    Terry McAuley Ward Burner Faye

    Hazard Gerrard Wally Ramsey Mutch

    Aguero Suarez Lukaku

    Please share your thoughts guys.

      a -8 with a defender included is a bit much

      Personally I'm keeping Clyne

      I'm gonna play Jags and Coleman every week and then use the Burner/Ward rotation, with Clyne making a nice back-up. Interesting you have kept Wally, but your mid was stronger than mine in the sense of you had a mid who you could switch and still keep Wally. I don't have that luxury

          I agree then, gotta get hazard

          my ML leader has him, but I look at it as a way of making sure he doesn't gain ground, knowing my TV is higher and I can make the points up elsewhere

        That's my dilemma, but I can't get Hazard in any other way, and Chelsea is at stoke, who haven't exactly been resilient either...

        Suarez is hogging all the points anyway, and I can't keep losing massive ground in my mini league. Cout was supposed to be a differential...

      Difficult one. Personally, i would rather have Coutinho this week, a big core is around the corner with him. But, Hazard is more of a long term pick and his price is rising very quick. If you are low on funds, i guess you have to make the move.
