The Weekend Team News

Steven Gerrard is officially ruled out of action with a hamstring complaint. Southampton’s injury problems persist ahead of a trip to Newcastle. West Ham face defensive issues as Sunderland roll up to Upton Park, Asmir Begovic is a doubt for Stoke’s visit to Hull, Christian Eriksen and Danny Rose return to boost Spurs, whilst Wilfried Bony recovers from injury to start for Swansea in the Europa League loss to St Gallen:

Brendan Rodgers has finally confirmed that Steven Gerrard will be sidelined for at least four weeks with the hamstring problem suffered against West Ham last weekend. There was good news on Jordan Henderson, though, with the Reds boss revealing that the midfielder has trained and “is fine”, after picking up a knock against the Hammers. Reports in the local press also confirm Daniel Agger is back in the squad after missing out through illness last week.

Bacary Sagna is set for a fitness test today, having missed the last two Gameweeks with a hamstring injury. Arsene Wenger also revealed Lukas Podolski is available for selection but is “a bit short” of match fitness, whilst the Gunners boss went on to confirm Theo Walcott is “looking stronger this week” after handing the wide man a series of brief sub appearances since his recovery from abdominal surgery.

Morgan Schneiderlin has an outside chance of recovering from a groin injury for Southampton’s trip to St James’ Park but, even if passed fit, is unlikely to manage the full 90 minutes according to Mauricio Pochettino. Aside from the central midfielder, the Saints boss doesn’t expect any of his walking wounded to return.

West Ham are without the services of Stewart Downing and Kevin Nolan for Sunderland through injury and suspension respectively, though Ravel Morrison returns from a one-match ban. Big Sam has injury worries in defence though – James Tomkins is a doubt with a groin injury, whilst James Collins and Guy Demel are both suffering from sickness. The Hammers boss remains hopeful both will recover, though.

Asmir Begovic is a major worry for Stoke’s trip to Hull after suffering a bang on his thigh in midweek. Mark Hughes revealed that Begovic “has a bit of bleeding in there” and will be assessed later today. Meanwhile, Erik Pieters returns after a groin injury.

Tottenham were boosted by the return of Danny Rose and Christian Eriksen for last night’s Europa League win over Anzhi. The left-back played the first 45 minutes of the 4-1 win, whilst Eriksen replaced Mousa Dembele just after the hour mark.

Wilfried Bony returned to action for Swansea last night after missing the last three games with a hamstring problem. Michu was an unused sub in the 1-0 defeat in Switzerland, having signalled his own comeback from knee and ankle problems by turning out against Hull earlier in the week. Gerhard Tremmel continued in goal for the Swans and perhaps looks likely to keep his place after Michel Vorm admitted he is set to undergo knee surgery next month.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter stream for breaking news as Friday’s press conferences unfold.

a casual is someone who doesn't use statistics or any in depth analysis in order to assist with transfer or team selection. someone who just logs into fpl once a week and makes his or her decision in 5 minutes. on this site however, casual is a synonym for any anyone who buys on form players with no historic precedence for pointmaking. and people with yaya. and early adopters of ramsey

    3,4,6,5,7.
    Arsenal :
    - will they be be tired and jaded ?
    - Will they have the stomach for the fight ?
    - will they choke ?
    - will they be bullied by City ?

Both teams to score, Aguero first goal scorer is a sensible bet.
Would fancy Roo/Hazard as safer (c) bets but very much worth a punt if behind in mini-leagues.

purely speculation, till gw23 (8gw's)...what do you think is the likely points difference between the following players:

    - Jagielka
    - Distin
    - Howard

I am thinking +10 for jagielka due to baps and roughly same points for distin and howard due to occasional baps and save points. If so, is the price difference between distin and jagielka justified?

    thoughts?

Think Jags then Howard then Distin if a clean sheet happens
      Fulham only need a goal and its 2 points then if there's a yellow it's a 1.
Fancy Everton to win 3-0 or 3-1

Anyone fancy some Christmas detective work??!

I still can't find any comments by this guy -

I went in to the HOF tab and found him but it won't link me to his comments. Any further advice? I was interested to see what -4 transfers he's gone for!

If this doesn't work, let me know what 2 transfers you think he might've made! haha!

I'm in the market for a new defender for the next 6 weeks. I'm switching Boruc for Howard so want to avoid Everton.

    Current defenders are:

    Zabaleta Chester Gabbs Clyne Williams

    Thinking of doing:

Williams -> Man U defender (because of fixtures) - who is most nailed?

    I have 6.4m to spend.

    Any better options?

Williamson is affordable if no money in the bank but with my few pence left over I might go for Collocini instead

      2. No-one nailed on but Evra.

    Any thoughts on the 3rd defender i should play? Currently got Marshall in goal, with Coleman and Chester, then need to decide on;

    Burner
    Dawson
    G.Johnson

Burner has best fixture, but is it worth doubling up?

    Second keeper is Speroni.

Anyone else think Lukaku isn't the best captain choice? He's been consistent but not really explosive. Just the two double figure hauls soo far this season.

In a game with 38 game weeks, I don't really see how this explosiveness reaaally matters all that much. What you want is high expected value. As in a high PPG. Captaining a player with 50% chance of going 2 points and 50% chance of getting 12 points is pretty much the same as one that averages 7 in some other way. If that made sense.

You don't end up top at the end of the season by having all the players with highest PPG all season, you win it by changing to players that get big hauls for a period

      Tomorrow's gonna be his third.

Everton is the on form team. Playing really well at home.
Fulham is on a bad run. Lost 5 of last 6 away games conceeding 12 in the last 5.
Lukaku got the best odds to score from bookies.
Historically this is a match Everton likes to play and win.
Aguero never score vs Arsenal, Hazard might be rested after playing 90 min midweek and Liverpool is poo at WHL.

      Lukaku (c) for me

It's between Lukaku and Suarez for me. Feel the masses will leave it on Suarez, hard to argue against it with his form. He's likely to be on Penalties now aswell.

Suarez is on form no doubt. If Van Persie was an automatic captain every week last season, then Suarez should be as well this season.

It's just it's his first game without both Gerrard and Sturridge so we don't know how Liverpool will tick esp without Gerrard. And playing away to Tottenham whose form is picking up after the City trashing and historically plays well against Liverpool at home is a negative factor.

Though Suarez on penalties and direct freekick increases his appeal, I would rather monitor his first game without Stevie G.

To be fair though, every captain this week is a massive punt. Luck will play a major role rather than selection (such as Suarez / Aguero against Norwich which is a no-brainer). So just go with your gut and hope for the best

It seems to be the «consensus» is that Silva is a better option than Yaya now. Why is that? (Answering with «Yaya will be deep» is not good enough, as he still gets into the box a lot, scores goals, and is on set pieces).

Silva is more involved in the final third, 0.5 less, averaging just 0.3 ppg less than Yaya. He'll create more chances than Yaya.

Agreed that you cannot really say that Yaya is deep, but you can say he's deeper in relation to Silva. And Silva is cheaper. But at the moment I'm sticking with Yaya. If I didn't have either then Silva would probably tempt me.

The stats suggest it. And past history (before this season). And because people want to gain on Yaya owners - can't do that by buying Yaya!

If I had Yaya I'd hold but I'd buy Silva out of the 2 if I had neither.
