Versus – Rooney and Lukaku

For the majority of Fantasy managers, the valid options for our three-man frontlines have lessened as the season has unfolded. Olivier Giroud and Daniel Sturridge were quick out the blocks but neither were able to maintain consistency and, as Sergio Aguero and the suspension-free Luis Suarez hit their stride, it’s a case of the South American duo plus one other when it comes to our forwards right now:

Suarez and Aguero are far from cheap but, as their prices continue to escalate in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, they’ve delivered time and again and more than justified the premium outlay required. The Liverpool forward has averaged an astonishing 11.4 points per game and, whilst Aguero’s eight points per game leaves him trailing in the Uruguayan’s wake, it’s an average that’s still head and shoulders above Robin van Persie’s 6.9 over 2012/13.

After delivering 241 points in his first year at Old Trafford, the Dutchman’s position as United’s top forward has been undermined by both injury and Wayne Rooney’s rise to form. As van Persie continues to battle toe and groin problems, Rooney has served up a series of consistent displays under his former Everton mentor, David Moyes. So far, he’s racked up eight goals, seven assists and 18 bonus points, drawing blanks in just three of his 13 appearances and averaging 7 points per game – a ratio bettered only by Suarez and Aguero. Furthermore, at 11.1 in FPL, he’s cheaper than both South Americans and, with games against Villa, West Ham, Hull, Norwich and Swansea in the next six, Rooney looks poised for further attacking returns. Indeed, this afternoon’s news that van Persie will be sidelined for a month after sustaining a thigh injury merely strengthens Rooney’s cause.

Over at his former club, though, Fantasy faith in Romelu Lukaku is building. Since arriving at Goodison in Gameweek 5, the big Belgian has bagged eight goals, three assist and 11 bonus points in 11 appearances. Lukaku has also been highly consistent this term and, registering just three blanks, has averaged 6.4 points per game under the guidance of Roberto Martinez – slightly fewer than Rooney but at a significantly cheaper price of 8.5. As Lukaku steels himself for a schedule rated the most appealing of any side in the next six Gameweeks by our season ticker (FUL, swa, SUN, SOT, sto, NOR), the bandwagon is in full effect – over 96,000 FPL managers have already acquired him this week, more than any other player in the game.

With a big decision to be made, then, we take a look at both players’ displays so far this term – for the purpose of our analysis, Lukaku’s stats are taken purely from his time at Everton, with a couple of late second-half sub appearances for parent club Chelsea discounted.

Man Utd have the fan base and financial muscle to head back into the top 4, something Liverpool didn't have back in their hay day.

Look at the next 4 fixtures for the top 4. Everyone has 2 big games against each other except United who have fodder lined up. They could be back amongst the pigeons without spending anything.

Liverpool didn't have the fan base? Pfft

Also, when are you referring to? 2010 when Liverpool slipped out of the CL spots, or the early 90s, when they stopped winning titles?

The fan base was always there for Liverpool, as was the financial backing.

But once you fall out of it once, the players you can attract lessens in quality and quantity...hence you lot ended up with some below par players, and even further away from breaking into the top 4. Comes down to taking gambles from then on in on players just below that elite level...something which is paying off now.

LFC never invested in a new stadium which would have kept them at the top, they need those big attendances to complete financially.

The finance is there...hasn't been spent properly in the last 3 years especially thanks to Glazernomics.

And you could have £1Bn to spend on transfers, it's very tough to get back into the top 4 when you drop out of it. Because no truly top players that could improve a club like United will want to sign.

Great scouting obviously, but as I said above you have to sign a player below the elite level.

As a striker playing for Ajax in Holland, not lighting up the Champions League, he was nowhere near elite level when they signed him.

The plastic fans are all ready melting away, add to that the ones that now leave Old Trafford when their team is 1 down with 10mins to go. As for dosh will make a killing on Young, Welbeck, Smalling and a crocked RVP I suppose.

Is there anything other than the report in the Mirror (which itself only suggests it's a possibility) to say that Panty will be dropped this week?

Panty/Davis owner here with just enough for Panty -> Howard this week for a 4 pointer. Not sure if it's worth it though....

      I think so
Since I don't have Rooney, I'm going Aguero though. I just don't trust Lukaku with the captaincy

It's a shame RVP is only out for a month that won't be long enough even for a O.1 drop under the special RVP transfer rules.

It's a tragedy, total fail by FPL this year. His starting price and their flag / transfer rules has killed him as an option this year. As well as his form and injury record.

The other angle is that people have retained their value on him, people with him still have got away with murder.

Nothing wrong with the starting price, it's the ridiculous series of flags being added and lifted at just the wrong times that have preserved his price.

To all those contemplating captaining Rooney this weekend you are aware that United are complete and utter bobbins right now? I don't care how impressive United's record against Villa is, that was before the drowning sad clown that is Moyes was chosen to dismantle United's infrastructure. Even luck* is deserting United now.

*actually hoping to reverse jinx things here and United actually win. Not betting on it though.

    In a mood.

Lovren and Clyne out (both to fall in price)
Jags and Burner in (both to rise in price)

I think that hit will pay off. Jags and Burner have 4 of 6 at home and great fixtures. On the opposite Clyne injured and bad fixtures for Lovren. That hit midterm will pay off. And in this period when there are sooooo many chances for rotation I will assure my team safety.

    Thoughts?

Will Sot concede from Remi and friends?

Thoughts on this mess? Love the attack, but my defense is a major risk.

    Kun, Roon, Suarez
    Nasri, Silva, Oscar, Ramsey (Oviedo)
    Lovren, Williamson, Coleman (Baker, Faye)
    Harper (Gazzaniga)

this is how I'm rolling out on the weekend..

    Howard
    Burner, Coleman, Terry
    Hazard, Silva, Ramsey, Ravel
    Suarez, Lukaku, Aguero

    Lewis; Januzaj, Mertesacker, Clyne

think I'm good to go but struggling a bit with the captaincy..think it really comes down to Hazard or Lukaku but have also considered a cheeky Coleman/Terry armband (though I would have to be feeling very punty to put it on Terry given their recent form)

posted this yesterday, but thought i'd post it again in case it helps anyone with their captaincy decision.

Heres a quick run down of who I consider to be the top four picks for the captaincy this week.

Agueros points against the current top 4 teams theyve played in the league (As they are playing a top team)

    CHE (A): 8
    SPURS (H): 15
    EVERTON (H): 7
    NEWC (H): 12

    Total : 42

This doesnt include the 13 against UTD, which I would definitely class as a *Big* game.

Hazards points against the 4 bottom teams theyve played this season (as they are playing a bottom team)

    FUL (H): 3
    SUN (A): 17
    WHU (A)10
    CAR (H): 18

    Total: 48

Lukakus points against the bottom 4 teams hes played this season (as they are playing a bottom team)

    CRY (A): 2
    WHU (A): 7
    STK (H): 6
    HUL (H): 1 (while at chelsea) 2

    Total: 16/17

Rooneys points against the 4 teams closest to them in the league this season.... (mid table, how depressing) and not including Newcastle who he didnt play (as they are playing a mid table team with similar points)

    SWA (A): 8
    SOU (H): 5
    TOT (A): 13
    STK (H): 12

    Total : 38

And on request here is Suarez

Suarez against top opposition (as hes playing a top team, note that the next 'top' team he has played is Hull!)

    ARS (A): 2

    EV (A): 9

    NEW (A): 10

    Total : 21 (from 3)

I sense this will be a really tough game from him, and with Gerrard out.... I'm just not sure hes a viable option this week. Notice that all these games are away too… not the best tally!

do with this what you want, but personally i'm torn between Aguero and Rooney. I think Aguero could well be in line for big returns tomorrow however, so I feel asthough he is the safer option.

Excellent post. I'm happy with my Aguero (c) pick. Can't beat their home form. The only thing that worries me is the early kick off curse, it could be 1-0 or 3-1.
