The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 17

As the ink dries on his Anfield contract, Luis Suarez hogs the headlines again with yet another salvo to see off a gutsy Cardiff display. Elsewhere, those hunting differentials will have been warmed by another twin-assist contribution from City’s playmaker, while, at the same time, showing caution ahead of the rotation minefield laid out in front of us.

The Game Changer

Quite frankly, it’s getting tedious. Luis Suarez is taking up too many digital inches on these pages and giving us little option each week but to highlight yet another brilliant performance and devastating haul.

Another 16 points today gives the Uruguayan four consecutive double-figure scores with an astonishing 9 goals accrued over that run. Quite simply, Fantasy managers have not witnessed such consistent, explosive performances since Ronaldo was twisting the blood of full-backs for Man United.

You have to have some sympathy for the Premier League’s other performers, particularly Yaya Toure, a player who is surpassing expectations and redefining his Fantasy status.

Today’s expertly taken free-kick in City’s 4-2 win at Fulham was his fourth deadball strike of the season and his ninth of the campaign. In Fantasy terms, Toure continues to defy our preconceptions – the Ivorian was never really placed in the heavy-hitter bracket but, with his consistent goalscoring from set-plays, with two spot-kicks thrown in, he’s put himself amongst the very top midfield performers.

In any other season, we’d be talking about Toure as a player of the year contender. Right now, however, that particular title appears done and dusted.

The Underused

While Toure’s scoring shows little sign of abating, his team-mate David Silva again underlined his value as an alternative for those seeking a differential. Two more assists in the win at Fulham took him to five for the season. More significantly, it meant that, of nine league starts this season, the Spaniard has returned either a goal or an assist in seven of them.

That level of consistency surely warrants further interest from Fantasy managers who will note that, currently, only just over 5% of the Fantasy Premier League player base own the playmaker. While Silva remains a single booking from a ban, with back-to-back home matches to come, it seems unlikely that many will allow that to influence their decision to swoop.

With Theo Walcott also looking to underline his credentials against Chelsea on Monday night, suddenly there are clear options for those looking to either break up or oppose the established midfield template.

The Selection Poser

With Wayne Rooney present and correct for United today, Sam Allardyce’s decision to bench Jussi Jaaskelainen and Joe Hart’s recall for City were the only real issues facing Fantasy managers. It’s the calm before the storm, however, with rotation clearly looming over the next seven days as the fixture list gets punishing.

Already there are folk questioning how Manuel Pellegrini will rotate for the Etihad clash with Palace that follows the epic Boxing Day meeting with Liverpool. Gameweek 19 is not upon us just yet but is undoubtedly a major rotation concern for all, particularly those considering City assets.

Alvaro Negredo’s owners will at least be somewhat relieved to have seen Edin Dzeko start alongside the Spaniard at the Cottage today, in the hope that both strikers will be allowed to boost their goal tallies against Liverpool and Tony Pulis’s side. The midfield is far less certain, whilst, at the back, Fantasy managers will surely have noted that Aleks Kolarov was handed a starting role at left-back as Gael Clichy switched flanks to solve Pellegrini’s injury concerns. Kolarov, with three starts in the last four, looks a daring differential for the next two City home matches.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Gotta love it when you stick to a certain player when there is huge pressure to sell and then it comes off. Keeping Rooney was as good a decision as can be. There are two ways to look at this game and sometimes holding onto a player can be a pivotal decision and is just as important as making correct transfers.

not entirely sure why anyone actually sold him. Was never officially ruled out.

Only source I saw was a guy on twitter who noted down names of players as they entered the hotel.

If you sold him based on this then there is no sympathy to be had.

I dunno, you can only go with the evidence at hand and with reports such as 'not at hotel', 'not in squad' etc it would tempt anyone, especially with a massive Negredo wagon.

There was a Times journalist who said Roon was definitely out too, which was spread on this site yesterday. I can actually see why people sold him. I didn't personally but after coming on this site for a few hours I was definitely tempted.

We get too much info on here, a lot of it lacking in quality. It can be very misleading.

The buck stops with Moyes though I'm afraid, the tight lipped get!

ok I didn't see this report. Then I can understand to some extent I guess there was an urge to sell.

Majority of times the info here is great, I also contribute to news where I can find it.

If I had found the rooney news saying he was out from a times sport journalist on twitter I would have posted it. Nobody is to blame for posting that info as it comes from a credible source in the times. Nobody would think it is wrong as it appeared to be quality information at the time.

But yes I get you, so much information being passed around at times it makes you make panic decisions. Sometimes it might be better just staying away from the news and making decisions on your own. However doing this you are always scared you miss out on that late injury news.

Yeah, see I think that is foolish. Even if Rooney was to miss one game I wouldn't try and fix an earlier 'bad' decision with an additional hit. It'd be better to just leave it and accept an automatic sub and then have Rooney for the midweek game.

No I think that is different because both players are on totally different scales. Selling a budget player for a big hitter even for a hit is rarely a bad decision. However Rooney -> Negredo was a like for like transfer.

I was fortunate enough to take a good hit for this weekend selling RavMo for Silva and it payed off straight away. Its simply a different situation given the potential point returns for both players.

          Fair enough.

So if I have Redmond (FUL) now. Would you take a hit to get Silva in vs Liverpool?

I'm really on the fence with this. Silva is surely more than capable to produce and outscore Redmond by 4 points

More crazy is the fact that people tend to be more pessimistic than optimistic. Yesterday i found out through a reliable united site that one of the hard core poster had found out that Rooney is fit. I posted it along with the link an hour before the squads were released and people were more inclined to think of it as a troll than atleast have faith. Bit if i had posted the same saying Rooney is out, people would actually believe it!

Part of the fun/problem is the lack of decent information to go on.

I remember people literally screaming at people as idiots for selling Brady before the international break, when he was scoring and would only be out for 2 weeks with a hernia. Now it turns out things are far worse than anyone thought.

I honestly don't think its anything more than luck sometimes.

Yeah one of the things that really irks me is when people say others are idiots for selling/buying when there is little information to go on and the reality is that is quite a 50/50 decision. A bit of grace and humility can go a long way.

If you had to choose between Wally or Silva, which would you choose.

I'm not doing anything obviously til after Wally has played. Oh and I have Negredo for City, and Rambo & Kosc for Arse if that affects your decision at all

I'm stickin' with Rooney I think. He's just so impressive when you mix it all together. Great finisher (bicycle against Man City was just stoopid), insane work ethic, chips in on defense, can pass long distance with great accuracy when on his game...etc., etc. I think he brings a package that is about as complete as they come.

Just read an article saying that Wenger will rest Ozil after the Chelsea game. They play whu, newc & car in the next fortnight & Ozil could only play 1 of those games. There was even a possibility he could be rested for all 3 of them.

Question - is this likely to occur & if so should I sell him. My problem is that I would rather keep Ozil as he is now a bit of a differential as so many have already sold him but if he's going to miss so many games then is it advisable to sell or just rely on my bench & keep.

    Opinions & thanks in advance.

Well, I think it points to how dumb some of SAF's transfers were. There is no point in having Kagawa in your team if you have Rooney and RvP. Kagawa is ideal in the hole behind a forward in a 4-2-3-1. No-can-do with Rooney and RvP - unless you have the balls to go 4-3-1-2. Now Kagawa gets the odd game on the wing. WTF. MUN brought in Berbatov for record money and had no idea how to fit him in. They probably should try to sell Rooney on playing as a box-to-box mid alongside Carrick.

We are being pawned by unscrupulous bigots and snobs from lecherous stock, selling out our land on a cut and run basis by banking magnets educated in the privileged in this society.

When football gets dragged into the English Mafia and the relationship with Russia/Eastern Mafia allegiances then you get corruption. We have these sad fookoes running these businesses now trying to sell out our working pride to foreign Mafias.

People are making a stand not least Hull and others. We are not just witnessing a sell out of our heritage more akin to a corrupt secret handshake between the champagne suckers that view us as scum.

Come to America sometime where it's a $400+ deal for a family of 3/4 to attend a hockey/BB/football game. The hardcores (who aren't rich) are priced out. I am a massive Detroit Red Wing fan (hockey) and when you go to a game, there are 30-40% of seats in the lower bowl empty because those are 'corporate' tickets - corporations can expense the tickets as a business cost so the seats are filled with bigshots (who don't always show up) or given to employees (who don't always show up). Every single second of non-action is filled with rock music blasted over the PA because there is no real "support" for the team. At least watching EPL you get real passion from the fans.

I think it tells us how many ghost ships there are out there when the average so far is 31 points and most active managers captained Suarez for 26 points. I wonder what the average was for active managers - 50+ ? By "active" I mean managers who've made a transfer in the last 2 weeks and change captains consistently, a low bar admittedly.

I think you will be pinning a lot of hope in the Everton duo. The others are widely owned and I wouldn't expect much from Clyne/Terry.

Yeah, I think you're right. Hoping for some Mirallas magic (and no EVE cleanie!)

I f Everton win 3-0 or 3-1 you are probably okay. Ars v. Che 2-2 ? Then maybe you are back in business.

Doesn't seem a bad score, how big a drop was it? If Mirallas performs well it could lift you.

Yeah, not a big slide...30k -> 35k ish. Was all looking rosy about a month ago after I crept into the top 5k. Need to stop the bleeding!

Current front 3 - Suarez, Remy, Welbeck.

Assuming Welbeck is sweet I'm thinking of selling Remy this week for Rooney which will give me double Man U.

    Suarez, Rooney, Welbeck

    Thoughts.

Morning chaps, whatcha reckon is the best move this week to the below? Panty out is a must, but I'm getting a bit fed up with Nasri also....

    A) Panty -> Howard (no EVE defensive cover)
    B) Panty & Nasri -> Szczesny & Silva (will need to make the move today) [4 points]
    C) Panty & Nasri -> Szczesny/Lloris/De Gea & Walcott [4 points]

    Panty, Davis
    Terry, Evra, Clyne, Ward, MOlsson
    Hazard, Ramsey, Nasri, Mirallas, Ravel
    Suarez, Rooney, Lukaku

Nasri is a frustrating FF asset, but he seems assured of starts and has good FF points history in limited minutes. Just move Pantilimon.

Navas is performing well when he gets a chance though, so I wouldn't be too surprised if he gets a start soon.

But the main problem is Nasri is scoring very little when on the pitch in these huge City wins. Thinking about:

        GW18: Panty & Nasri -> Szczesny & Walcott (4 points)
        GW19: Hazard -> Silva/Yaya, or Terry & Mirallas -> Bardsley & Silva (4 points)

Nope, I'm keeping Haz I think. I'm sick of missing his rare big hauls. I think he's just a player to leave in your team and never captain. He'll be in the top 5 MFers come the end I'm sure

Yeah, I keep missing his hauls also - very annoying. He's a bit of a flat track bully though, and CHE's fixtures are pretty tough after this week.

City are capable of smashing Palace, so it could be a worthwhile gamble

It's either that or Mirallas & JT out for a hit....

Depending on Monday's performance, Chelsea not playing 100% imo and fixtures could be awkward if they don't pick their game up. Maybe.

I am. I'd rather sell Hazard instead of Ozil.

Whilst I have no plans to sell Rooney in the near future. I must say I am pretty concerned by his deeper role in the team over the last 2 GWs. The worst thing too, is that RVP is out at the moment, so this should be the time us Rooney owners are cleaning up as Roon plays striker for a Man Utd team (slowly) on the up.

Hopefully the light at the end of the tunnel is that Kags will be back and playing behind Roon in the coming weeks

Welbeck went off in the 57th minute. MUN may go back to Kagawa in behind Rooney. Stay calm and trust in Rooney. He will score FF points even if he drops deeper.

With Carrick on the mend and Welbeck presumably out I wouldn't bet on Rooney staying deep for long.
