Spot the Differential

Spot the Differential – Gameweek 18

We present three wise men for the Boxing Day “differentials”, bearing possible gifts of double-figure potential, set-piece threat and midfield budget appeal…

Emmanuel Adebayor

Emmanuel Adebayor is a Fantasy asset who comes complete with a health warning – he’s not to be trusted. Equally capable of spectacular brilliance and bafflingly abject displays, the Togo international is nonetheless that rare commodity – a differential capable of exploding points.

Sunday demonstrated Adebayor’s potential, not just to Tottenham’s campaign but also to Fantasy managers as a new consideration for our forward lines. While we’ve waited patiently for Roberto Soldado to click and deliver on his La Liga promise to help break up the template up top, it could well be that Spurs harbour another player who can play his part.

Tim Sherwood did not hesitate to bring Adebayor in from the cold, pointing to his “history” as a player for the justification of his faith. Having recorded 17 goals and 12 assists back in 2011/12, Fantasy managers also have a recent track record to cling to when considering Adebayor as an asset.

Even with a modest 7.7 price tag, Adeabyor’s uncanny ability to disappoint provides a major caveat. However, with just three Gameweeks to go before we earn the opportunity to refresh our lineups, Adebayor offers a tantalising option – a new proposition up front capable of double-figure returns with back-to-back home matches against West Brom and Stoke as a platform for his resurgence.

Leighton Baines

The Everton left-back is expected to be restored to the starting lineup for the Toffees’ home clash with Southampton – a fixture that offers Baines a perfect re-introduction to the Fantasy reckoning.

Despite this, Baines faces a battle to win a place in our affections. In his absence, Seamus Coleman has built on his promising early season form with an explosion of three goals in five outings, cementing his place at the top of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) defender rankings and as Everton’s key option amongst their rearguard.

However, even with a lofty 7.4 price tag, Baines should not be overlooked. Set-pieces have already played a significant role in our seasons with Yaya Toure a major benefactor of the points they can bring. Baines has already gained from two strikes from dead-balls against West Ham and will be back on set-pieces for the Boxing Day clash, along with spot-kick duties.

Now owned by just 13% of FPL managers, Baines makes an unlikely differential but, such is the strength of Coleman’s recent charge, he’s set to become just that in the months ahead.

Jordan Mutch

While Peter Whittingham is the undisputed weapon of choice in a limited arsenal of Cardiff options, Mutch has gradually emerged as a worthy consideration at the very bottom of the budget bracket. Available for 0.7 less than his team-mate, if you can’t stretch to Whittingham’s set-piece prowess, Mutch is shaping up as viable cover for Cardiff’s impending survival scrap.

A third goal of the league campaign arrived at Anfield on Saturday, with Whittingham typically providing the cross, as Mutch continued to build on his reputation in the Bluebirds lineup. With a pair of assists and six consecutive starts in the league, this 4.5-priced asset could provide a decent midfield enabler in our January wildcard tinkerings. Sort by value in the FPL stats and Mutch is rated fifth but, along with Hull’s Jake Livermore, is by far the cheapest option on show.

A home clash with Southampton on Boxing Day, followed by the visit of Sunderlad two days later, provides Mutch with another opportunity to stake his claim and edge his way into our thinking for 2014’s refresh.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

One of the toughest parts of FPL is having a player who is struggling and is constantly failing to bring home points but then they have one good day and you forget all about the previous 2 pointers and its like they have a clean slate in your team. Those kinds of players for me have to be Barkely, Coutinho and Mirallas to name some. Weeks upon weeks of seeing two points next to their name and you are ready to sell them until all of sudden they perform well and they are back in your good graces. I think that's what makes this game so challenging and fun, you can never really know who is back in form or who is just a flash in the pan again, all you can do is keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best.

Have both him and Oscar... so I'm torn. The Oscar cameo the last few weeks has been killing me, so if Hazard doesn't start, at least Oscar will play a leading role.
But I'm sick of cameos. Mourning had better give him a proper rest and not give him a 15-minute run-out.

I got burnt twice by not captaining Suarez; both under situations where he was not a logical captaining choice.

I think someone else said it best prior, that form beats out fixtures. Suarez is in beast mode right now.

I'm not sure he is the best choice; but there is never the single right choice to these things. All I'm saying is that Suarez has proven that he should be considered a realistic choice. The rest is gut and luck at this point.

It's frustrating when you are an Ajax fan and see good players come and go (Suarez, Kezman, ect.), but you know your club will consistently challenge for the title and can provide challenge forthe Big Euro clubs and maybe that's the principle for them.

my selling price for Ramsey is 7.4m because I brought him back in for GW12.

considering Ramsey + Negredo > Cabaye + Rooney for GW19 and Hazard > YYT for GW20 (the latter being purely theoretical at this point)

Haz will be in the top 5 point scorers at season end, and his hauls while sporadic are huge and hard to predict.

So, I don't want to sell him unless he starts blanking consistently. The move looks really good as you bought Ram later. Hazard to YYT may backfire though.

I'm actually considering the same kind of thing. How can you go wrong with Silva and Yaya? Certainly, both are more consistent than Hazard. Also, what bothers me with Hazard is that he just doesn't put it up against the better teams. He does explode hugely against weaker teams, though, which is the only thing that has me wondering if I should get rid or not.

well one of his selling points is being on pens, which is then invalid whenever Lampard plays (which seems to be often due to Mou's love affair).

Chelsea looks like the grinding Chelsea but without the defensive prowess. I don't see them routing anyone and Hazard had his fair share of jammy points before which cloud the judgment..

If United can afford to spend 27.5 mil on Fellaini who is nowhere close to level of Reus then surely they can reach into their piggy banks and find some money. I am not sure that he is better than Gotze but Gotze went for 37 mil so thats a relatively similar figure. At any rate if Reus is leaving Dortmund in January then I think he would go to arsenal

Feeling more at ease with Walcott(c) today. Probably calm before the storm.

Honestly do think he's flying under the radar as a captaincy option. He's got a solid FPL record against WHU, West Ham are struggling, seem to be iffy with their keepers, Arsenal need a win, London derby, spirit of Christmas etc.

You mentioned all the pros. The cons:

Arsenal attack running out of gas, Ozil might be rested (hence less good assists), the NEW fixture could be on Wenger's mind already, Nolan is back so WHU should get back to their shape, plus they're pretty much Home boys.

      If I have him I won't (c) him.

I've got to see him integrated into this year's offense first. He just hasn't gotten back to being involved like he was last year. Only goals this year were in the Man City game. Things will improve eventually but I'd want to see some results first.

Same here. I prefer to wait until he'd become indispensable again before buying again.

Arsenal attack can easily be freshened up with Cazorla coming in. Ozil rested is a dent in opportunities being created but chances will still come, Arsenal will probably play abit more direct. I don't think Nolan is a factor at all, didn't stop them from conceding more than 3 against all big clubs so far (save United, Nolan played in all).

Don't know why, but Santi is very much a different player this year. Second season syndrome, maybe? We really miss AOC, this is supposed to be his year.

Nolan may not be a direct factor to Walcott, but it could be to the result on the field, hence it will effect gameplay of both teams. I should be optimistic with Wally but i couldn't. I hope i'll be proven wrong in the end, though. 😉

Santi probably needs a prolonged run in the team. Doesn't help that Ozil has become the central focus of the team's play - Santi ran the show last season.

I think Nolan will be very isolated if he comes back in for Maiga. Don't think he will affect the game that much. WHU were rubbish against Liverpool, so were they against United. Every captain option has pros and cons...just willing to go with a punt this week, and we know that Walcott is FPL pedigree.

You mentioned you'd wait until he becomes indispensable - whats a good indicator of that? might miss a few good hauls by then

I'd settle for Walcott at least getting something on the ballpark of the touches he got last season. He can't score until he starts seeing the ball again.

When the team gets going and he really involves in most of the attacks - i can see Ramsey is still the man to get from our midfield (FPL-wise) due to his price/value and intention going forward.

Agree. And I'd bet my bottom dollar he sees alot of the ball against WHU. you can't judge it based on the Chelsea game and say he doesn't get the ball enough.

It's not just the Chelsea game, it's every game this year. Even in his 2 goal game against MC his stats fir touched were well below his averages for last year.

I currently have (c) on Adebayor. Stick with the punt or put it on Suarez?

Did Wegner tell us anything about Ozil starting or resting?
