Spot the Differential – Gameweek 19

We turn our attentions to North London and plunder a couple of overlooked alternatives ahead of the weekend deadline. Our third option will be expecting a start up top for City as Manuel Pellegrini’s side look for a tenth-straight win in front of their own supporters:

Edin Dzeko

As the festive fixtures arrive thick and fast, Manuel Pellegrini’s lack of forwards could prove beneficial to the big Bosnian’s short-term prospects. With Sergio Aguero sidelined and Stevan Jovetic doubtful once again, the City boss has been all too reliant on Alvaro Negredo to produce the goods up top and keep his side in the title race.

Having shifted to a 4-2-3-1 for the Boxing Day visit of Liverpool, Pellegrini now has the option of retaining the formation or returning to his preferred 4-4-2 as City prepare for the visit of Crystal Palace tomorrow afternoon. Certainly, the Eagles game looks the ideal opportunity to unleash Dzeko, either as the lone forward or alongside Negredo, with Pellegrini intent on maintaining the attacking verve which has seen his side average more than four goals per home game thus far.

Coming in at 6.7 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Dzeko (who sets you back 8.5 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team), also has a trip to Swansea on his agenda before the winter wildcard kicks in and could be worth a punt for those Fantasy managers frustrated by the recent displays of Olivier Giroud and Romelu Lukaku in their three-man frontlines.

Christian Eriksen

A peripheral figure in the league under Andre Villas-Boas, Eriksen has been earmarked as key to Tim Sherwood’s new-look attacking approach. After arriving from Ajax at the end of the summer transfer window, Eriksen was afforded 90 minutes just once by Villas-Boas as the former Tottenham boss chopped and changed personnel with a frustrating regularity.

Since the Portuguese’s departure, Eriksen’s Fantasy prospects have taken a shot in the arm. Installed as a central midfield playmaker in Sherwood’s 4-4-2, he’s played every minute of the new manager’s two matches in charge and, with set-piece duties also part of his repertoire, fired a superb free-kick in Thursday’s draw against West Brom to serve a reminder of the talents that produced 17 goals and 36 assists in his final two seasons in the Dutch top-flight.

Priced at just 7.1 in FPL (7.0 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team), he has home games against Stoke and Palace in the next three to arrive on our radars in perfect time for the winter wildcard.

Lukas Podolski

In his only start of the season, the German international bagged a brace in Arsenal’s 3-1 win at Fulham back in Gameweek 2. Before August was out, however, Podolski was stuck in the Emirates treatment room after sustaining a hamstring injury on Champions League duties – a bitter blow for a player who had racked up 11 goals and 10 assists in just 1,986 minutes across his debut season.

Finally recovered, Podolski needed just 26 minutes at West Ham on Boxing Day to demonstrate his capabilities. A devastating substitute appearance produced a goal and assist as the Gunners turned around a one-goal deficit to send Big Sam’s side into the drop zone and propel themselves back to the summit.

As Olivier Giroud toils up top, with two goals from open play in 14 starts, Podolski’s explosive display at Upton Park has made a real claim for consideration as the Gunners lone striker for the weekend trip to Newcastle. Arsene Wenger could also shift Santi Cazorla to the centre and allow the German the left flank berth if he chooses to finally rest Mesut Ozil but, either way, Podolski’s eye for goal could be just as vital as Theo Walcott’s to his side’s title aspirations.

With home games against Cardiff, Fulham and Palace and a trip to Villa in the five games following the Newcastle clash, the schedule is certainly in favour of the fit-again striker, who would set you back just 8.1 in FPL, 8.7 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

        Same story for those perhaps.
There's real cover vs bits and pieces cover.
Would be the risk you take.
Use the FT next week on the next forward.
        Most may offload Lukaku anyway.

Usually, Id say go with the defender playing at home, but in this case, there is no way on earth that Cardiff minus Malkay will do well today.

I've spent my FT on Bardsley and am playing him.

With 4m in the bank, consider doubling up on Everton's home fixtures with Baines. We've reached a point where increases in team value doesn't deliver a significantly better team. As such make sure you don't take points hits.

All those bringing in Wally and Silva for pts hits are helping those already with them!

That quote from pellegrini is as close to it gets as confirmation that Dzeko starts in place of negredo. Negredo out for Dzeko for me and I think it's a case of in for a penny in for a pound so I've handed him the captaincy. It's one of those that could go horribly wrong but it is a fun punt.

True, but in the long run he'll surely be in the top 3 keepers at end of the year... Means there must be some points coming his way soon. Having said that, if i had a spare FT, I'd be VERY interested in cech at 6.1. I think jose is in "park the bus" mode these days.

Forward looking, i'd back chelski to keep a good few cleanies... cech a bargain as he should be 6.5-ish... Terry - not for 6.6 when he started at 6.0.

Yep definitely interested in ivan at 6.2... He's been very quiet on the attacking front this year. He's surely due a couple of goals & assists. Nicely nailed on too.

Have no City coverage, but is this the wrong week to bring some in due to rotation risk?

Would love to bring in Silva, but home to CPL, anyone could get rested surely?

Have 16.1m to spend on two midfielders, thinking Eriksen and .... Navas for -4?

Or could just bring Eriksen in for Ramsey, no hit, and keep Oscar.... Thanks.

    Long post ahead.

With fixtures coming thick and fast we found ourselves focus on which player who will be benched and which players to bring in. This post has nothing to do with it whatsoever.

Just want to get a review on probably one of the most important aspect of the Jan WC – the defense rotation. And with a template front 8 starting to emerge and our favourites big hitting attackers are in form, we may have to stick with uber defenders at the back.

Easy to say Coleman is essential at this moment – especially to those of us who got him early this season. So it leaves 4 slots for a defense rotation. There are still a few bargains outside the top 7 teams, and while you may opt for the ‘premium’ ones in the team for goal threat, bonus, etc, I’m a fan of the cheapest-but-nailed-on ones.

I won’t focus too much on the rotation selection itself, but rather on the individual team’s defense rating and HOME fixtures (or easy ones) on GW 21 onwards.

Starting with the less goal conceded at home..

    [Hull]
    Defender Pick : Chester (3.9m)
Home Defense Rating: ***** (5 CS 6 GC).
Home Fixtures Rating : * (SOT NEW WBA SWA)
Good fixtures Streak : GW 22-33
Comment : Rock solid at home, one of the best in Europe probably due to having the best Home fixtures in the beginning half of the season (NOR CAR WHM AVL SUN CPL STO FUL !). Chester’s a bargain at 3.9.

[STOKE] just gotta do it 😀
Defender Pick : Pieters (4.9m) and monitor Wilson (4.3m)
Home Defense Rating : *****(4 CS 6 GC).
Home Fixtures Rating: *** (SWA WHM HUL NEW FUL)
Good fixtures Streak : GW 29-32
Comment : Cold night at Britania is striker’s worst nightmare. Can see a few CS coming especially on the later part.

    [Newcastle]
Defender Pick : Williamson (4.4m) and Debuchy (5.1m) for attacking threat.
Home Defense Rating: *** (3 CS 9 GC).
Home Fixtures Rating: **** (SUN AVL CPL SWA CAR)
Good fixtures Streak : GW 27-31
Comment : Unexpectedly a good defensive side. One of the on-form teams so Williamson is a bargain at that price. Had CS vs MU and Tottenham away from home.

    [Southampton]
    Defender Pick : Clyne (4.5m)
Home Defense Rating: **** (4 CS 9 GC).
Home Fixtures Rating: *** (WBA STO NOR NEW CAR)
Good fixtures streak : GW 21-32
Comment : Everyone’s favourite defense in the beginning of the season although a bit off form lately. Decent side we know their capability. Quite decent away from home 3 CS in 9 and with good away fixtures coming too (sun ful hul whm cpl)

    [Norwich]
    Defender Pick : Olsson (4.2m)
    Home Defense Rating : *** (3 CS 10 GC).
Home Fixtures Rating : *** (HUL NEW STO SUN WBA)
Good Fixtures Streak : GW 22-33
Comment : Decent at home, rubbish away. Some very good fixtures at home.

    [West Brom]
    Defender Pick : Ridgewell (5.1m)
Home Defense Rating: ** (2 CS 12 GC).
Home Fixtures Rating : ** (FUL CAR WHM STO)
Comment : Too unstable and expensive. I’d stay away.

    [West Ham]
Defender Pick : Demel (4.8m) – honestly idk ask Doos
Home Defense Rating: **** (4 CS 13 GC).
Home Fixtures Rating : *** (NEW SWA NOR SOT HUL CPL)
    Good fixtures Streak : -
Comment : Good side, although hard to determine which defender is nailed on. Solid away from home as well with few good away fixtures (car, avl, sto, sun) and streak of good fixtures GW 24 onwards. Yes please.

    [Crystal Palace]
    Defender Pick : Ward (4.1m)
    Home Defense Rating : **** (3 CS 13 GC)
Home Fixtures Rating : *** (STO HUL WBA SOT AVL)
Good Fixtures Streak : GW 20-25
    Comment : Crystal Pullis. Stoke v 2.0. That’s all.

    [Cardiff]
    Defender Pick : Turner (4.2m)
    Home Defense Rating : *** (3 CS 13 GC)
Home Fixtures Rating : ***** (WHM NOR AVL HUL FUL CPL STO)
    Good Fixtures Streak : GW 24 – 36 (except 28 – 31)
Comment : My personal favourite. Had the hardest home fixtures in the first half of the season (were up against MCI, EVE, TOT, NEW, MUN, ARS) so no wonder their rating is not good. Expect them to tighten up at home in the later half.

    [Aston Villa]
    Defender Pick : Clark (4.5m)
    Home Defense Rating : ** (2 CS 13 GC)
Home Fixtures Rating : ***** (WBA WHM NOR STO FUL SOT HUL)
Good fixtures Streak : Spread through the half
Comment : They perform better away from home due to easy opponents. So with those home fixtures, they should be able to keep a few CS as they did on away games against the same team. Another favourite of mine and most people will overlook their defensive capability.

    [Swansea]
    Defender Pick : Williams (4.8m)
    Home Defense Rating : ** (3 CS 14 GC)
Home Fixtures Rating : ***** (FUL CAR CPL WBA NOR AVL SOT)
Good fixtures Streak : GW 23 til end of season
Comment : Hard to say. Their fixture is great but I’m not too keen

    [Sunderland]
    Defender Pick : Bardsley (4.4m)
    Home Defense Rating : * (2 CS 16 GC)
Home Fixtures Rating : ****** (SOT STO HUL WBA CPL WHM CAR SWA)
Good fixtures Streak : Spread out except 26-29
Comment : Tricky this one. Bottom of the league and that’s reflected by their defensive performance so far but has tightened up recently with 3 CS in the last 3. If they have really have found their rhythm, then a defensive coverage from this team is simply a must have with those fixtures ahead. Bardsley in for me.

    [Fulham]
Defender Pick : Nobody.. err Hughes (4.2m)
    Home Defense Rating : * (2 CS 17 GC)
Home Fixtures Rating : * (NEW NOR HUL CPL)
Good fixtures Streak : GW 30-32
Comment: Bad defense, bad fixtures, no streak. Just avoid.

*Ratings are my personal opinion but it’s pretty objective in my few.

So that’s that.Interesting pattern, really, from that small analysis. We can see the team that has been performing well, tend to have worse fixture than those who have performing below average.

Sticking to the trend, these teams should have similar CS amount at home at the end of the season, so the ‘bottom’ ones should get a few more CS from here on.

The interesting part is finding the right rotation and switches. Have fun.

Would love to get some of your opinions on these teams. All these are pretty much me analyzing the numbers, so it's only half of the total.

So if someone watch a lot of these team plays (I don't because there's little coverage here), feel free to give your expertise. I'm seriously considering having Sunderland, Cardiff and West Ham in my team later on Jan WC

Thing is, when you consider team value at this point in the season, managers can become lazy and pick 3 big strikers, 3 big mids and a Cabaye/Ramsey, and 2, maybe 3, premium defenders. There is little incentive to use their squad.

To beat these teams, you need an advantage and for me, that's picking rotating defenders which had tough home fixtures for the first half of the season. Just look at how Southampton have benefitted.. fixtures against goal shy opposition really do make a difference.

So, in a way, I resent this post! And now it's hulked 🙁

        😉

Ha yeah don't think we can fit 3 big strikers 3 premium mids + Cabaye / Ramsey + 3 premium defender really.

I can only do it with Coleman + 4 cheaps.

Yeah Southampton is the perfect example of how this applies. Finding defensively-decent team against goal shy opposition (that's the part I left out in this analysis, good on you), is the key.

Hull as you can see were up against (NOR CAR WHM AVL SUN CPL STO FUL) at Home in this first half of the season. And we see how that turns out for them.

      Good work.

I disagree with Cardiff as I think they are going to fall apart from here, unless Tan manages to pull another Pochetino out of the hat. Also, Stoke under Hughes = avoid.

I'll certainly be looking at a WC defence with Hull, Palace and Norwich defs. Think Flanagan may end up being a good cheapie too.

Cardiff is a monitor situation definitely. But they got decent fixtures at home no doubt about that.

Went to bed with England 30 odd for 0.

Woke up to find they'd been skittled all out for 179. The sad thing is that I'm not even remotely surprised. Mind you, losing your last 6 wickets for 5 runs is hugely impressive even by England's standards. We certainly don't do collapses by half!
