Walcott Ruled out for Six Months

Arsenal have this evening confirmed Theo Walcott has been sidelined for the rest of the season with a knee injury sustained in Saturday evening’s cup clash with Tottenham.

The winger was stretchered off towards the end of the 2-0 win and underwent scans on the problem earlier today. The Gunners issued the following update on their official website:

“After coming off injured in Saturday’s 2-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur, the Club regrettably announces that Theo Walcott has sustained a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee. Theo will have surgery in London in the near future and is expected to be out for at least six months, therefore missing the remainder of the season and the World Cup in Brazil in the summer. Everyone at Arsenal wishes Theo a speedy recovery and we look forward to seeing him back on a football pitch as soon as possible.”

The news is a massive blow to Arsenal’s title aspirations and Fantasy managers alike. Ironically, Walcott’s Fantasy potential looked to have stepped up a notch at the weekend, too – Arsene Wenger chose to field him as the lone striker in the north London derby, with Olivier Giroud sidelined through illness and Nicklas Bendtner out with an ankle injury.

Having returned from abdominal surgery in late November, Walcott was tentatively eased back into the first-team and produced a pair of assists over four sub appearances. From Gameweek 16 onwards, though, he racked up 47 points over just five starts, with doubles against City and West Ham followed by an assist against Newcastle and goal at home to Cardiff.

The bandwagon was at full pace, with almost 120,000 FPL managers snapping up his services prior to the last two deadlines, as Walcott’s price leapt from 9.1 to 9.6. Indeed, over 50,000 have already transferred the winger in this week alone.

From a Fantasy perspective, today’s news may even prove the tipping point for those who have so far resisted the temptation of playing the winter wildcard early. Walcott’s absence will have a significant effect on many a Fantasy plan, forcing us back to the drawing board for yet another revision.

With games against Villa, Fulham, Southampton and Palace in the next four, Arsenal’s upcoming schedule bodes well for Fantasy returns and is likely to see many turn to Mesut Ozil, with Santi Cazorla also a potential target until Aaron Ramsey returns from a thigh injury. The German has plummeted in price from 10.8 down to 9.9 yet has averaged an impressive 6.3 points per game – joint-top for midfielders – and looks the prime target for current Walcott owners looking to take advantage of those fixtures.

Alternatively, for those unwilling to opt for Yaya Toure as a route into City’s goal potential, now may be the time to turn to David Silva. The pair have mirrored Ozil’s 6.3 ppg but the Spaniard, with an ownership of just 5% and price of 9.3 to his team-mate’s 10.1, may well be the ideal trade.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

What would you do with this team?

    Szczesny / Lewis
    Distin / Ward / Clyne / Turner / Koscielny
    Navas / Hazard / Silva / Walcott / Whittingham
    Lukaku / Negredo / Suárez

0 FT, £0.0m in the bank.

    A) Bench Wally this week. Can afford a 0.1 drop
    B) Take a hit for Ozil/Yaya/Oscar
    C) WC

      B or C. I'd err towards C.

Drop Distin, Navas, Walcott & Negredo for starters.

Maybe Skrtel, Oscar, Ozil and Ade right now?

        a) Walcott was not the one doing the provoking.
        b) If you think making a 2-0 gesture means you deserve a career-threatening injury, no matter what team you play for, you are a sociopath, and possibly not quite human.

I really dont mind using it early. Baring any injuries the team I can get using the WC is one that I would probably be happy on for the rest of the season. Regardless of any new signings. Of course a few changes will be made to it. Nothing ever goes to plan. But its a fantastic base.

Yes it would be a - 8 for me and I still need to sort my keepers out.

It really depends on the shape of your team and rank. I did a - 8 couple weeks back, knowing I might get a red arrow that week, but I knew it would come back to me in the following weeks. Which it did. I moved higher up the rankings than I was before the - 8.

no i mean when the flag turns red...........ceiling raised thus youll see a change in his total% .....say he was at 99% to drop hell suddenly be at only 50%

ah ok. so any flag comes on, the ceiling is raised (how much depends on the color) and a player is only protected coming out of a flag, and for 7 days?

not sure about totalfpl and yellows, it used to be no adjustment but you needed 150% to drop.........
yes players are protected when a flag is changed back....not sure if it applies to suspensions tho

and the protection coming out of a flag doesn't matter whether it's a suspension or injury, right?

I'm keeping Sterling for one more weekend as a failsafe in case Rooney doesn't play on the weekend, but not making my transfers until Wed after the City game (xferring Wally now because I have to)

Here's a tough one - I have a strong team - not interested in panicking for a WC.
MF is: Whitt, Hazard, Sterling, Redmond, Walcott(out for...)

    A. Go with fixtures and grab Ozil
    B. Empty the bank and grab Yaya
    C. Grab Silva

        Merte, Terry, Coleman (Ward, Chester)
        Whitt, Hazard, Sterling, Redmond, Walcott
        Rooney, Suarez, Lukaku

On my 8th green arrow out of 11 games, making solid decisions with hits here and there. Trying to orchestrate my Aguero move in 1-2 weeks as well.

          nvm I like it 🙂

at least your 3 cheapies are nailed (except Sterling)

are you going to bring in Kun for Rooney or do you have the cash for Lukaku?

I would say if you don't have Yaya already, it's not really worth it..Silva a good differential pick..

I'm considering Ozil until Ramsey is back and then swapping down at the WC to him so I can fit in Baines or upgrade my 3rd striker

I'll have to do Rooney+Merte>Kos(-4) if Aguero is fit next week. Completely worth it IMO. Is Ozil a sure-fire replacement for Walcott? I can't take my eyes off ARS fixtures, but the rotation risk makes me look to MCI.

I think so but better ask on main post for Arsenal fans to answer. IMO he 100% starts, he's the main man now. Was only a shoulder injury too..
