Fixtures

Frisking the Fixtures – The Strong – Gameweek 27

Impending blank Gameweeks for many teams produces difficult ground for our regular look at the upcoming schedules. We delve deep in our assessment of the next four to six Gameweeks, beginning with those who have promising fixtures to follow. Continued investment in a pair of solid Fantasy performers, Southampton and Chelsea, looks a valid tactic, whilst a handful of out-of-form sides are handed the chance to reverse their recent struggles:

Southampton

SAINTS27

A puzzlingly weak team selection from Mauricio Pochettino saw the Saints crash out of the FA Cup to Sunderland but Fantasy players are the real winners here as this means Southampton keep their fixture in Gameweek 29. Their next six fixtures include trips to West Ham and Crystal Palace plus home games against Norwich and Newcastle, with only the visit of Liverpool and a game at White Hart Lane to trouble what has been the best value source of Fantasy profit this season.

The ever-popular Artur Boruc is as good a pick as ever between the sticks. In defence, Calum Chambers appears to have stolen the spot from Nathaniel Clyne, though Jose Fonte is the elite moneybags option. It’s hard to look past Adam Lallana in midfield as he continues to impress in his bid for World Cup game time but up front there’s a real tussle for our affections between Jay Rodriguez and last year’s Fantasy workhorse, Rickie Lambert. Both come highly recommended.

Newcastle

NEWCASTLE27

Alan Pardew’s side have looked bereft of ideas since the departure of Yohan Cabaye and last Gameweek suffered a humiliating trouncing at the hands of Tottenham. They do, however, have a decent stretch of fixtures coming up to potentially reinstate some of their swagger. A probable blank week in Gameweek 29 is an annoyance (teams without one are thin on the ground) but the fixtures either side of that could be promising for Fantasy managers in dire need of a differential (AVL, hul, ful, CPL).

Newcastle’s defensive form has swung wildly from one end of the gauge to the other this season, with flagrant disregard for their opponents. A swing back to the positive would bring Tim Krul and the generously priced Mike Williamson onto our radars. In midfield, Hatem Ben Arfa was benched last time around after a run of three starts and looks to be in the doghouse once again, so we look to the strikers for options. Loic Remy has now served his suspension and will be absolutely integral to the remainder of Newcastle’s campaign – at one point in the season, he fired eight goals in as many games to demonstrate his potential.

Fulham

FULHAM27

We’ve yet to see anything of new managerial appointment Felix Magath but Rene Meulensteen can afford to feel a little aggrieved at his luck; Magath enjoys a much kinder fixture list than his predecessor to prove his merits. The next four fixtures for Fulham include West Brom, Cardiff and Newcastle, fixtures that could help the new manager steer the Cottagers to safety.

With a meagre three clean sheets all season, it would be a brave Fantasy manager who invested in Maarten Stekelenburg or Sascha Riether but Magath has worked with Lewis Holtby before and could coax goals and assists from him. Steve Sidwell scored his sixth goal of the season against Man United a couple of weeks ago to continue his surprise ascent up the Fantasy rankings but it may be Kostas Mitroglou who is of most interest. The Greek striker was on fine form before signing for Fulham and, if the new manager is able help him bring that form to the Premier League, we could have a genuine differential on our hands.

ALSO CONSIDER

Norwich
Another team whose Fantasy appeal is boosted by a lesser-spotted Gameweek 29 fixture, Norwich’s appeal is mostly centred around defence; they haven’t conceded a goal at home since Gameweek 19, despite hosting Man City and Newcastle. Their next six fixtures include the visits of Stoke and Sunderland as well as visits to Aston Villa and Swansea. To capitalise on their defensive form, John Ruddy is a little expensive but is second in the Fantasy standings for saves and third for keepers overall. In defence, Martin Olsson is the pick of choice, having both security of starts and price on his side. For those hoping to venture beyond the comforts of clean sheets for Canary-shaped points, Robert Snodgrass has grabbed a goal and assist in his last five games and could be on the verge of finally replicating the form that saw him rack up 152 points in his debut season last time around.

Cardiff
Ole Gunnar Solksjær’s stewardship at the Bluebirds has not been hugely successful so far, despite an agreeable schedule. There is still hope in the form of some handy home fixtures, though; Hull and Fulham pay visit in the next six, with a trip to West Brom also over that period. Such fixtures could be lucrative for David Marshall and Ben Turner in defence, whilst in midfield, Craig Noone has impressed and now looks assured of his starts. Wunderkind Mats Möller Dæhli was the subject of his manager’s praise after a stand-out display in the weekend cup los to Wigan – at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game, he could be a worthwhile budget enabler if he can nail down a start.

Chelsea
Having failed to replicate last week’s equine feat in the FA Cup, Chelsea are now the only top four team without a blank Gameweek to contend with. Their fixtures are a little mixed, with daunting home games interspersed with kinder away trips but, with their gritty form and title aspirations, the only question over investment in the Blues looks like being one of quantity: to double or triple is the quandary facing Fantasy managers. John Terry is likely to return from a muscle injury this weekend and is still the defender of choice, though Branislav Ivanovic has been marauding high up the pitch lately and been rewarded with two goals and an assist in the last three. The performances of Eden Hazard have made him impossible to ignore and searching for lucrative differentials in the Chelsea strike force has become something of a fool’s errand, especially with Fernando Torres back to steal game time from Samuel Eto’o.

Suarez>Kun really tempts me in GW31.

I could then go RVP>Suarez again afterwards.

Sure a bit of value would be lost, but having Aguero and RVP that gw could be massive.

    Cue Suarez hat trick

I'm sure a lot of people said that on here the night he got a hat trick and assist/s against Chelsea two seasons back.

At the end of the day, fixtures are fixtures. He could easily hit form by then, and if not, 180 minutes with a player of his quality is a massive differential for people chasing like myself.

            City 6-3 Arsenal
            Liverpool 5-1 Arsenal

I think you're missing my point. It's easy to look at a fixture and say it's hard, but anything can happen in football.

I'm chasing a lead so having a player like RVP with a double game is a differential that's hard to ignore.

Fair enough, I get your point.

I'm just pointing out that while RVP is hard to ignore, his chances of a big haul are realistically smaller than they initially appear; yes he has two games but they are both against tight opposition. Of course Liverpool-Ars game was similar except SAS was in much greater form, so doesn't really fit the same mould as mun-city probably will.

Let me also add the derby is no less than 5 weeks away.

If United bang in 4 against West Brom in a few weeks time, it'd be useful to at the very least have a contingency plan to get someone in.

I'm VERY surprised to see Fulham mentioned in this post.

GW: 28-31 - As far as I'm concerned these are the only games that will really count — for the teams that will play every week. Next week's fixtures can be discounted as you should have a plan for this already and should have a decent 11 out.

Ordered by difficulty (arguable) 3/4 players in from these teams to stomach the ride and some cheap players - none affected by the schedule:

CHE — ful, TOT, avl, ARS - (Top simply based on form - 2 from Ivan, Azpil, Oscar + Haz)
NOR — avl, STO, sou, SUN - (Olsson, Noone, Snoddy)
STO — ARS, nor, WHM, avl - (Crouch, Adam, Assaidi)
CPL — swa, SOT, sun, new - (Dann, Ward, Ince, Ledley) (+ Everton Away DGW)
TOT: — CAR, che, ARS, SOT - (Kaboul, Bentaleb)
CAR — tot, FUL, eve, LIV - (Mutch, John)
FUL — CHE, car, NEW, mci - (Sidwell)

For me. Olsson, Ledley, Azipil and Ward/Kaboul I think.

    GW27 - Benteke ➡ Ade

    GW28 - Save (field 11)

    GW29 - Nolan ➡ AJ (doesn't play but sets up team without a hit) - Field 9

GW30 - RVP and Mata ➡ Aguero and Silva

    GW31 - Ade ➡ Studge

...leaving me set up nicely for the rest of the season! 🙂

Would not be surprised to see Yaya lose over 0.3m value over the course of 14 days as casuals slowly realize that he's not playing for 2 consecutive matches without giving any thought to the impending DGWs (as they won't be in GW30 and easily noticeable on the transfer page without clicking forward)

I'm not sure if "casuals" exist. A large portion of players stopped playing; those can't really be considered casuals.

If people are routinely checking the site and swapping out inactive players; they're barely even casuals as well.

"Casuals" has sort of become a catchphrase around here; in place of: "I'm obviously incredible at this; so anyone who beats me is getting by on dumb luck, surely!"

My plan for GW 27-31 (with a one-hit-wonder):

As I pull my hair out with the upcoming gameweeks, I’ve tried to see how I can form some teams over the next five gameweeks. Obviously price changes could affect this, though in the end I should have 1.8 ITB if I’ve done the mathematics correct. As such, see below and let me know what you think.

    Current team is:
    Marshall Mannone
    Terry Mertesacker Coleman Fonte Gabbidon
    Hazard Silva Mirallas Lallana Parker
    Suarez Benteke Adebayor

    Transfer plans -
    For GW27 (1FT, 2.5ITB): Gabbidon > Olsson
    For GW28 (1FT, 2.5 ITB): Silva > Snodgrass [Gives me 13 starters + Parker]
    For GW29 (1 FT, 5.7 ITB): Mertesacker > Collins + Benteke > RVP (-4) [Gives me 10 starters + Parker]
For GW30 (1 FT, 2.9 ITB): Save transfer
    For GW31 (2FT, 2.9 ITB): Suarez > Aguero + Lallana > Silva [Gives me 3xDGW and 1.8 ITB]

Full team for GW 31 would look like:
    Marshall Mannone
    Terry Coleman Fonte Collins Olsson
    Hazard Silva Mirallas Snodgrass Parker
    RVP Aguero Adebayor

Note: As I said, price changes and injuries could affect this, but it could be a way for minimal hits and still have a few attacking DGW players for GW31 and atleast two City players for future DGW’s ahead. I can also ship our RVP later for Sturridge or Suarez after GW31 if need be. I also need Terry to start games again to keep a solid back line.

    What do you guys/girls think?

Ta, another transfer in Metro I didn't need. I didn't bother with transfers in the first half which has left me a tad short of players and only 6 transfers now. I might scrape 10 or a lucky 11 together if everyone who could play, does play.

Nearly everyone on here will be struggling to get 11 players for GW 29 and if they can then probably not the strongest 11 they could hope for.
    Something a bit different then....

What would your strongest 11 be from these guaranteed fixtures?

    West Brom v Man Utd
    Cardfiff v Fulham
    Palace v Southampton
    Norwich v Stoke
    Chesea v Tottenham

My current team is (this is with no transfers)

      Adrian (If Hull lose)

      Cahill | Bruce | Ward | Fonte

      Hazard | Mata | Lallana | Mutch

      Adebayor

I have 4M in bank and will have access to 4 FT before GW29. Looking likely to do Sturridge to RVP and Adrian to Boruc if Hull win, doubt I will touch the rest, unless Chester is back and Bruce loses out.

Am i the only person who is just riding out these blanks? Everyone plays 38 times remember, surely the double gamesweeks will make up for the blanks? I would rather have an in form gerrard sat on my bench one week and a double gamesweek the next rather than wasting transfers bringing in say snodgrass or whoever.

People moaning they only have 4 players playing gw29, thats the problem? Surely most of your squad will then play twice? Am i missing something?

Could you buy a set of dumbbells? Maybe a bench? Stretch to a barbell? You could train from home then.

Press ups aren't best option, you are fatiguing smaller muscle making it harder to do any other movements
Secret to building up is to development of a programme that offers continuous increase in resistance.
Simply need to work muscle beyond capacity to encourage development.
          Alternate muscle groups each day

I used to be 60kg and 6'2" - very skinny
Been hitting the gym though for almost a year though and now 67kg and 6'3". Not massive but making some gains. Obviously if you don't have a gym at your to go to then it will be trickier..

1st, are you naturally an ectomorph (scrawny, long legs etc.)? If so - EAT. A LOT. I consume up to 3500 calories a day (runner) if you only do weights/ push ups, around 2500 would be decent I would think. Consider whey protein shake (although if you don't have cash for this -chicken, milk and brown rice all good as well) 70% diet. You can do all the work in the world but if you ain't eating enough, you aren't going to see or feel any results.

Maybe get a barbell. Cheap and you can do plenty of exercises with them. If you get the screw on plates so you can alter weight that would be ideal for a number of exercises - Shoulder press, curls, skullcrushers, tricep extensions, military press, bench press etc. etc.

Set out your home workouts like this:
              Exercise 1: 30secs
              Ex. 2: 30secs
              "
              "
              "
              "
Rest 1 min, then repeat x4/5 - intense and leaves nothing in the tank. Eat directly after.

Leave at least one day as a rest day - gives your nervous system and muscles a chance to recover.

Think that's pretty much it - sorry if I went overboard 🙂

Have weights actually, bought them a few months ago and never really got into it. I guess I would be an ectomorph, yes.

So, how long should i spend on an actual workout? 30mins enough?

And what would be the best things for it to consist of? I know I'm being demanding. 😛

Say you workout 4/5 times a week - you will want to hit each muscle twice, so here goes:
If you have time to do a long workout 30mins plus as you say, I would do this:
                  (Purely an example)
                  Push ups 10reps - (4sets) - 30secs between sets
Curls 10 reps each arm (4sets) 30secs between sets
                  Tricep dips 10reps "
Plank continuous 30-1min (to get some ab work in)
Military dumbbell press 10 reps (4sets) 30 secs between sets

Ive gone from around 60kg squats to around 105kg. Bench on 62kg from around 40kg and over head press 20kg to 40kg not much but like yourseld my upperbody is very hard to gain for me. Barbell rows are currently on 80kg up from around 30kg. All this in around 8months. And tbh i havemt been as dedicated as i should if i was earing right like rayne wooney stated above i think would have seen better results. And best thing about thos plan is only 3times a week. Trust me check the site out all the info on it is free.

All you need to remember are these 2 equations:

              1. size of muscles indirectly proportional to your sex appeal

I quit my job this morning at 10 am. A bit like doing a rage transfer in FPL. My boss asked me to think it over and have a chat with my wife. I then did some research and realised that I would get no dole for 9 weeks.
I scurried back and withdrew the resignation with my tail between my legs at 5pm.

            😳

Having a little glass or two now with my feet up and remembering that my 3 kids are more important than all the other shite one has to put up with.

            Cheers!

Maybe now would be a good time to give the results of how the FFS community have fared with the (-8)'s this season through a straw poll I did over the past week

              Of those polled

28 green arrows 17 red arrows for (-8) hits for the season so far. Are (-8)'s a sure fire fail...seems not.

No -8s for me this season. Two -12s, one green, one red. Absolutely had to do them at the time because I've been decimated by injuries this year.

same here...I've done six (-8)'s mainly due to injuries..4 green 2 red..I'm amazed at the results of the poll tbh..I thought the result would have been the other way around, at least.

Results will be a bit screwed because ppl tend to take those hits early on to gain TV as well. And early on, many peoples ranks were awful because of the "casual" season we're experiencing. So, ergo, green arrow from a poor starting point.

Oh yeah, I realise it's little more complex than face value...but still surprised me. The real measure is how well the "new team" does compared to the one you left behind..and then the following week..and on and on..Impossible to actually measure in reality.

4 weeks ago I was riddled with 6/7 flags...
Took a -16 to sort it all out.

4 green arrows since - gained 30,000 places in OR and broke just into top 45,000.
OR is not my priority but ML sure is with £100 at stake.
Also - it's easier to rise in rank from a lower start point....and I'm not exactly a high flier 🙂

...but it was not the guaranteed suicidal disaster it might have seemed.

Only taken 1 8 pointer this season. Resulted in a green and a gwk rank of 65k. For 4 pointers Im 5 green and 3 red. So overall for hits Im 6 vs 3 up.

Personally i think that that you're statistically much less likely to get a green with a -8 vs a -4. I do think a well judged hit can be made to work for you.

The key of course is judging it well, identify who will be the best scorers that week and if you dont have them already, and think they will be good to have longer term its pretty much a no brainer.

we should do a bigger poll at the end of the season and look at -4's and -8's...see just when and where the value lies in them..From what I've read this past week I'm not sure ther's much difference between the two in success rate.

I don't think the game-week rank takes account of the hit. So a big hit might sometimes result in an excellent game-week rank but also a red arrow.

Big hits may occasionally be necessary, but if you have a lot of them it may be a sign that you are regularly having to make corrections for non-optimal decisions made in earlier game-weeks.

Even if you get a green arrow, sometimes you might have got a bigger green arrow with a smaller hit or no hit at all. Even though you might achieve a respectable OR by taking lots of hits, you might perhaps have achieved an even better OR if you had not taken so many.

I don't think you will find many players in the top thousand who have taken a large number of hits. That is perhaps a more useful area to investigate, rather than just counting red and green arrows.

... Also, how many (-8) hits were there per player according to your survey? I would expect a player who only takes one or two of them per season to be more successful than one who takes them regularly.

And it also depends upon the reason for taking them. They might sometimes pay off for getting essential players in quickly - but how many players are that essential? Not many, I think.

They might also be necessary if your squad is badly hit by injuries etc. - in that case they might still be the best option, even if the immediate effect is a red arrow.

The important thing is whether the big hits lead to a better OR in the longer term compared with smaller hits or no hits, not whether the immediate effect is a red or green arrow.

But if you find it more fun to take lots of hits, then carry on!

Funny you mention an un-needed fuse; When I was in my young teens I was shown how to put a piece of silver foil across the terminals of a blown plug and thought the guy was a genius.

Only to discover later in life that he was really a toss pot that put my family in danger.

I haven't got a clue what's going in with these gw blanks etc. 50 points behind in my mini leagues and I've already done my transfer (Clyne to Chambers). What should I do with this team:

              Boruc/Davis

              Azpil/Kos/Flan/Kolorov/Chambers

              Oscar/Hazard/YaYa/Mata/Nolan

              Dzeko/Suarez/Sturridge

Can use my 3 FTs before then to get something like this out in GW29, no hits:

              Marshall*

              Ward - Evans - Olsson

              Lallana - Mata - Oscar* - Puncheon - Hazard

              J Rod - Hooper*

              * = players I plan to bring in.

Hooper has brilliant fixtures till GW35 so thinking I'd get rid of J Rod after this GW and keep the Norwich man as my cheap 3rd striker alongside Suarez and Aguero. Undecided on the midfielder - may yet plump for someone like Charlie Adam.

So what happens to HUL vs WHU in 29 now that Hull have tied?

still on. Same situation as before as far the replay goes

                Hull win - game off

                Brighton win = game on

also worry that if that game goes, I'll end up with 2 keepers with DGWs, which looks good on paper, but they'll probably end up with a DGW the same week.

Puncheon or Ince for GWs 28, 29 & the 31 double?

I'm leaning towards Ince given his impressive start and scoring record over the last couple of seasons - 25 goals in 67 appearances albeit in the Championship.
